when the virus was 1st detected. grew is beginning a strict lockdown for the 2nd time in 10 months the government is aiming to reduce the burden on overwhelmed hospitals families are buying medical oxygen on the black market because of shortages. former u.s. president donald trump has parted ways with his lead impeachment lawyer as of a more than a week before his trial that's according to u.s. media trump is accused of inciting the siege at the capitol building earlier this month as a say they plan to argue the trial is unconstitutional because he's no longer in office early indication is so limited republican support for a conviction and speaking out a cloud will cause he's professor of government at georgetown university here in caspar and joins us via skype from doha good to have you with us what happens what do we know about why these lawyers resigned. well what i'm hearing is that trump wants to make the case at the beach new trial that the election was stolen and his
10:19 am
2 problems with that 1st of all it clearly was not stolen that's minaj akkad it dozens of times and there was never any evidence for it but secondly the argument is problematic because it seems to imply well what i did was justified because of the stolen election and that's simply not there were kind of the sense that a car like this what sort of upset this is going to cause and it's any a week until he's choosing on trial in the senate and jurors avoiding being decides if he's got no means team how strong this case going to be. not very strong i mean he's obviously done this but he doesn't need a very strong case because it takes 2 thirds of the sudden to convict 2 thirds of the senate who are present. as long as he doesn't really screw it up he's going to be acquitted his best defense is the argument he's been making the last week that
10:20 am
he might go start a patriot that threat is enough to keep many of the republican senators in line however he's also threatening to show up himself that you defend himself that would be quite a circus but i think it would also be it's best if any point to going through with this trial if as you say the senate doesn't offer the support for a conviction we know that ahead of time is there any point to carrying through the whole process. well it's a debatable case i mean what what happened here was really really bad and so if you don't hold a trial it sort of implies that it wasn't serious enough to actually go forward with the trial on the other hand if he's acquitted a 2nd time then that doesn't really help either but the vote that they took last week isn't necessarily indicative of how people would vote if they were forced to write in other words they voted that they don't want to have a trial when republicans don't want to go on record with
10:21 am
a vote on this but some of them who said let's not have a trial might when faced with the actual evidence with the video of the invasion actually vote to convict there's another option here and that is that some of the republicans might choose to boycott the final vote based on the argument that the trial is unconstitutional and it only requires 2 thirds of those present to convict is not 2 thirds of the funds that is there a strong case for the trial being unconstitutional. no it's it's it's a somewhat debatable case but i don't think the supreme court is going to step in and rule that way we have had one impeachment trial not through the president but after someone has left office so i don't and he was impeached before he left office so no but that's probably the strongest argument that the republicans at this point have sent in a minister want to walks act live many thanks for joining us there from doha.
