6:05 pm
original point where the protesters were supposed to gather was completely sealed off the whole center of moscow the heart of moscow was sealed off with buses not running metro not stopping so they started together at the reserve points and these points were changing in an hour because every time they would start together in coming out on the streets then police would immediately detain people and finally they managed to gather these thought this is where all of the 3 were railway stations there was a significant group of people several 1000 people and they had their protests they managed to come to this detention center and on the way police was chasing after them together with their detention vans the paddy vans and kept on feeling them in now there is almost no protesters left here but still police is patrolling in there . and say the remaining ones so this is still going on and will be
6:06 pm
going on for some time we have reports that they're also going into small alleys in the vicinity and trying to detain people that they participated in this protest or the people that indeed our work chanting against putting like. are and can go away and russia will be free or he's going to leave that it's on target for the in moscow. now hundreds of people have been arrested in belgians capital where crowds are demonstrating against coronavirus restrictions they are frustrated with the country's tough luck and it's not time curfew the government has also imposed a ban on nonessential travel to and from belgium. and in the netherlands crowds have gathered to demonstrate against a curfew it went into effect last week sparking riots it is the worst civil unrest
6:07 pm
netherlands has faced for decades and the 1st curfew since the 2nd world war that speaks to us joining us live now from upside down assistant what is the latest with the protest now. well have police is now clearing this area here at the rex museum and i'm certain i'm some new throwing out fire practice add them to where some skirmishes before there was a group of 4 around 230 so protesters here at the square behind me but they chose left police has been ordering people to leave from the start of the rally they said it's an authorized rally there's an emergency decree to here in place so police out there also violating the corona mattias they're not keeping their distance so they have to leave this area there is riot police lined up behind me sort of moving towards the left over protesters here at the square right now the same feel to us
6:08 pm
area of some really serious battles with police in the last couple of weeks there were thousands of people here clashing with police fire water cannons were used at the moment it's still a lot more peaceful than it was in a previous week but as we are speaking the infantry ration is developing yeah it was approaches the confines of the netherlands and elsewhere in europe to say we want our freedom back. exactly that there firecrackers are out me everywhere now and russell saw hundreds of protesters who were detained because they were also planning to rally against the corona mattias but also the. strength of the police restraint since it was a very loud fire fireworks going off right here right now police is closing in on acid. wow so i need to probably move a little bit forward while i'm speaking there's also been
6:09 pm
a rally would have passed in vienna and i was a rally announcement that was cancelled there were far right groups and rallies yes while we're hearing a lot more firecrackers i can. show you what's going on here so please as closing in on this area right now. everyone is sort of trying to disappear this police on horses here behind me yes while moving in that's a very common side during a rally and then adams police is using horses. well most of the people were not willing to fight with police today so they left the area already it is just a few small groups still left here. shouting they have no freedom dictatorship in the netherlands that kind of stuff people have gone grown really fed up with the corona mattias poles in belgium have sad that only 40 percent are still supporting these measures while that was saffron de san before so it is an increasing

restrictions curfews go in on has really led to a lot of the disapproval of government measures. that will leave with a little let us get away from that situation the time being we. move from you a little bit later as things develop. well south africa's tourism sector has been hit hard by covert 1000 not that it is a vital industry for the economy particularly cater for businesses across the city now struggling to stay open open items has been. kept on has always been a dream destination for travelers around the world the list of must see it directions is endless. december and january a peak periods with tourism in the cape but visitor numbers are down by as much as 90 percent study locked down legalization to include night time curfews and a ban on alcohol sales beaches are off limits to all of

a landscape by making as much relief available to add to it as a hospitality industry and that could be for example reclassification of your property if you've got a tourism business property back to a presidential category and that could really reduce right suppose we've also implemented a piece of the missions for people dream to building from we're going to support it so that we can just you know give people the financial relief at this point in time while many of coffee losses and closed up shop people like daniel. jack and the estimated 75000 of his was jobs like risk in the midst who have no choice but to live out the storm. items. let's return to the netherlands to step back from his name saddam we've been talking a little bit earlier police breaking up protests there against the 1000 restrictions
6:14 pm
and step out things now. the riot police is said clearing this whole area now right in front of. around $200.00 gathering out to protest against the curfew and corona restrictions. here with dogs on horses also carrying water cannon so most of the protesters had left already but as a small group of people were using a firecracker says throwing stones have kept police there sort of in the small alleys behind me now and the riot police is moving in there as well with this weapon water cannon trying to clear this whole area this is a very central area in the heart of am so that and this right hundreds of police here behind me you can see. they're moving in on to small batches of protesters here with dogs and also there's
6:15 pm
a whole line of police on horses as well are all the protesters the 'd concern is specifically about the restrictions and the curfew the only going curfew or the purchases with other interests are. not at all against the growing of matches but this is a very mixed group combined of people who are actually really thinking in conspiracy said the very thing for so q unarmed people but also people supported by extreme right idea but also really have people who are suffering from the corona matches shops have been closing the nat'l and schools have been closed for a long time now so people are really sincerely suffering from these frustrations and they're all saying they're lost their freedom of course starts people very much attached to their freedom and this is a situation that i haven't been in since world war 2 so that's why it's just irritation and growing anger towards the government people also blame the
6:16 pm
government for acting too late to being too indecisive on the whole corona and that makes and that's why they are really getting more and more furious and and frustrated for a step a real sense of the tensions on the streets in amsterdam old you of course as you say to these restrictions to us in the netherlands thanks very much indeed. let's take the song we can speak now talks on a page jack who is a senior lecturer in global health advisory university college london school of pharmacy joins us now from london oksana thank you for your time here interesting to see what's going on the netherlands and elsewhere of course motions are running high and you can get a sense of how concerned all thirty's are about people reacting to these covert restrictions people understandably fed up but realistically what other options are they restrictions are the only way to go. yes we have seen where the appropriate restrictions combined with other measures such as an attack to test and train
6:17 pm
system has lets you. a freedoms being returned and there are many examples within south korea gets high on. your hands who are all enjoying their freedoms once again and have protected their borders through a measure of success is so by criticizing in these protests these protesters are just shooting themselves in the crotch essentially because they're contributing to an ongoing spread a particularly. high i also like to probably highlight that although there are people who disagree with the government are say this is not the majority of the public recently the u.k. pasta very tragic miles to air in over 100000 deaths with the highest death through capita in europe and 109 worlds so certainly i think there is that sense
6:18 pm
of loss and responsibility that if we continue to make the sacrifice this we have a very successful x. nation here again that is occurring alongside this and that we can look to other countries that have stabilized the situation solving is 0 cope better maximum suppression strategy and i think if we keep that as something to work towards that goal can keep people united at this very difficult time that as we look at those images of riot police on the streets of ms extraordinary thing is that this is a reaction to a pandemic is there a sense that governments have put themselves into this position of having to to quell of a furious population will elements for fear of population certainly because of bad decisions made in dealing with the pandemic. i think that's part of i think it's also opportunistic i think we see that this virus itself has become politicized and
6:19 pm
not the appropriate strategies people who are supporting lock down versus the anti lockdown has also given a stand with particular ideologies and that has absolutely confounded the response and i don't think that everyone fits into that category but i think it has fueled some of the aggression that we have seen in these protests that are occurring certainly it has not been easy but i think that reporting on the successes that we're seeing so far including the statistics on a vaccination rates alongside the very sad statistics of deaths and cases can also really reinforce that this will have an end date it's going to take us sometimes to get there but we can if we have better measures you can and in europe around we're all we can probably get there sooner asked for being frustrated with mistakes in the past what we have to do is look forward and learn from them so that people can
6:20 pm
you know less sense that slowly we're facing into the new normal and the back and forth elements again in the u.k. 3rd lockdowns certainly doesn't help and looking into how these decisions were delayed for so long certainly should be looked at in more detail and look looking at. even the world health organization requiring reforms to ensure that we have ready to go systems who are alerting. not only member states but also ensuring that there is that financial resources so that people who feel supported throughout all this because a lot of the anger too is coming from a place where people aren't receiving enough financial support as well as russell health alums other assets like the new york there are certainly they didn't get everything right but they do ensure that people who are isolating are checked up on
6:21 pm
that someone is calling daily to ensure that they have what they need the rear the help arrange groceries for the community it has to be down to that detail and the language we use is just as powerful so separate for instance the tax rate we could say virus tracing sort of isolation we can call protection where it's clear that we are not only at were protecting ourselves and the community been exposed so i think it's a right of our time that rocky wanted to make when we have accepted now but i do appreciate your perspective in your expertise in this thanks very much indeed alex on a project that thank you thank you. us. now former u.s. president donald trump is part of ways with his lead impeachment lawyer as little more than a week before his trial that's according to u.s. media it's now clear who will represent trump during the trial he's accused of
6:22 pm
inciting the siege at the capitol building and earlier this month after he repeated false claims of election fraud let's now speak to gabriel is on but he joins us from washington d.c. so gary what's happened there they walked out on him as he fought the. we're not quite sure but what we're hearing from a trump associate is that it was a parting of ways was done in his words mutually so however you want to read into that the bottom line is that his entire legal team not only his main defense lawyer but also 4 other lawyers who were part of the team are now no longer working for him and this all comes as you mentioned a little over a week until this important senate trial is supposed to begin and actually this coming tuesday is when trump is supposed to give a letter to the senate responding to the accusations by the house of representatives that he incited this insurrection that led to his impeachment in the house of representatives so there's
6:23 pm
a lot going on right now in this coming week and now bottom line is nobody knows who is going to be representing donald trump at the at the senate trial at this point it's anybody's guess now it does appear that the chances of a conviction in a senate trial are slim and the reason most people believe that is because it would take 2 thirds of the senate to convict donald trump and that would mean they would need all the democrats which they're probably going to get but they'd also need 17 republican senators as well and as of right now only 5 has have indicated that they would be open to potentially convicting trump so it appears unlikely at this stage that he's on the path to being convicted but of course anything can happen here in washington and it doesn't really matter in some ways because there's a lot at stake anyway because no matter what happens with the senate conviction or not whatever happens there the senate can still vote. in the coming weeks to
6:24 pm
bar trump from ever running for office again and that would take only a simple majority in the senate that's important because there's certainly a lot of people that are still believing that perhaps donald trump could be thinking about maybe running for president again 4 years from now but bottom line. we got to get through this trial and right now looks like trump does not have a legal team that's going to be representing him at least not right now given that these 5 lawyers have now stepped aside there i gave thanks for that good rivers on there in washington d.c. some of such a close look at those numbers it's likely to be acquitted again well on tuesday total of $45.00 out of 50 senate republicans voted to consider stopping the trial before it even begins on the week starting they argue a president cannot face impeachment trials once they have left office and 70 republican senators need to break rank and very long side the 50 democrats for trying to be convicted and that potentially prevents him from ever running for
6:25 pm
office again let's speak to bruce fein who's a former u.s. associate deputy attorney general joins us now from washington d.c. mr fine thanks for joining us here on al-jazeera we'll come to those numbers in a 2nd but 1st trumpet as lawyers what do you think is behind the parting of the ways i think the explanation is rather straightforward. mr trump wanted to lawyers to regurgitate the discredited view that the election was stolen from him by massive electoral fraud by democrats. that allegation has been discredited in over 60 court cases by his former attorney general william barr by his cybersecurity chief by democrats and republicans all around the country who occupy positions in state legislators and governorships it has gotten no traction in the u.s. supreme court and the lawyers basically said we cannot make such
6:26 pm
a representation of massive electoral fraud when we have no good faith belief that it's true indeed it's precisely that misrepresentation that caused me and several others to write a letter to the new york bar association only last week asking that an investigation be opened to disbar mr giuliani because as a matter of legal ethics you are forbidden from advancing a legal or factual claim that you have not a credible basis for believing is accurate and that is why i don't believe mr trump will be able to attract any substitutes there is no lawyer given the threat of professional sanction who is willing to continue at this stage after all the time that is lapsed all the investigations producing nothing who is willing to stand up and echo mr trump's lie that there was massive electoral fraud and i don't think he
6:27 pm
will be represented at the trial but surely a stolen election even if he could prove it which he obviously can't that still wouldn't be a defense for inciting it and for rabble rousing would it. no it's not and that's why i think the lawyers quit they thought that their argument would be he really didn't incite the crowd they came there with a pre organized plan to storm the capitol he really didn't it anything to their their conspiracy to sedition and insurrection that's what a normal lawyer would do but he is still fixated on the fact that you know he was a loser he lost a job by joe biden's no george washington and that is why his defense are actually correct is really not a defense to the accusation but i think what he is relying upon is that even though republicans in the senate believe he's guilty as charged that there is no jurisdiction and no vote to acquit not because they'll say he didn't do something
6:28 pm
wrong but because you can't impeach and convict someone who's out of office now that's contrary to what happened in 876 with a former secretary of war held in belknap who was impeached and had a senate trial after he resigned but even in that case there are many senators who voted to acquit him from the charge of bribery saying it's not that he didn't accept a bribe but we don't have jurisdiction here right i do want to make one correction of your previous commentator and that suggesting that the senate by a simple majority could bar mr trump from holding office in the future that's not accurate they can only impose that sanction if they find him guilty of an impeachable offense that requires a 67 votes threshold ok and so on that point the conviction in the senate do you think it is feasible given that at the moment the numbers don't seem to favor. right now i think it's very unlikely because i think that the republicans think they have an escape hatch to argue we're not condoning what he did but we have no
6:29 pm
jurisdiction let's leave it to the criminal law to determine now he's out of office can be prosecuted whether what he did you know violated the prohibitions on insurrection and i said it is conspiracy and that's why it'll give them that cover when they confront their constituents and say my gosh if an attempt falsely to by force and violence overturn an election by preventing the vice president from counting electoral votes is not an impeachable offense what is you know it's kind of gave a lady get you imagine what that precedent would set for any future occupant of office basically condoning constitutional law listeners to prevent the functioning of self government but they'll carry that by saying well we just didn't have jurisdiction we're not condoning what he did and that's why i don't think they'll be 17 republicans in the senate to vote for a conviction probably seattle pounds out in

a day's time for his fine. thank you now all my soul mates are troops will reportedly remain in afghanistan beyond may despite a deal between the united states and the taliban to draw down numbers seem to nato officials have told reuters that deals conditions have not been met with a ton of i'm playing for a spike in violence the report suggests u.s. troops who make up the bulk of the nato mission will therefore stay the u.s. has not commented yet on the report by the ministration has previously said it's reviewing the taliban agreement. well nato in washington will have a challenge getting the taliban to agree to an extension beyond made there's concern that if the situation remains unclear the taliban may increase attacks u.s. downsized its troops in afghanistan to 2500 just days before former president donald trump left office reaching a 19 year low and the american forces work alongside nato allies and partners all

companies c.e.o. is it comes after a battle with astra zeneca over a vaccine supplies he used then impose controls on the export of vaccines produced in the block this week to natasha butler who's in paris and joins us live senator actually this is comes amid a lot of controversy over vaccine supply what's this conference all about. yes and well the e.u. commission hasn't really released much information about what will be going on between the e.u. commission head of wonderland and of the bosses of 7 pharmaceutical companies the c.e.o.'s of 75 pharmaceutical companies. and astra zeneca as you say this meeting coming at a time when the relationship between the e.u. and some of these companies has been particularly fraught over the fact that some of those companies including pfizer midden and astra zeneca say that there may be some problems or challenges with the delivery of some doses that the e.u.
6:33 pm
was expecting that route really blew up over the last days between the e.u. and the british swedish firm astra zeneca because astra zeneca said that there could be a reduction in the amount of doses it will be able to deliver to the european union by some 60 percent in the 1st quarter this year well the e.u. has been absolutely furious over that they have said that this is a breach of contract also the e.u. seems to suggest or allege that perhaps some of the doses of this vaccine that are being produced in factories in the european union in belgium and in germany are actually making their way to the u.k. instead of remaining in the e.u. that is why the e.u. decided to put on more strictures more controls at the end of last week on exports of vaccines to make sure that these vaccines weren't perhaps leaving new territory the e.u. also tried to trigger an emergency clause in the gregs it deal
6:34 pm
a part of this this part of this clamp down on exports that infuriated many on both sides the channel in the u.k. and some of the you saying that this was actually completely unnecessary the e.u. then withdrew their response to that they have left in place the restrictions the point is what the 1st of one delay in the e.u. commission head will want to do with this. meeting is to try and question these companies on their delivery commitments will they be able to live up to them what can the e.u. expect and of course you'll be making it very clear that the e.u. is disappointed that some of these days says will take so long to reach that you when it commitments already be made there are no such things like the paris israel will transfer 5000 vaccine doses to palestinian medical workers according to a government spokesperson the country has drawn sharp criticism for excluding palestine's occupied territories from its speedy vaccine rola bola
6:35 pm
a quarter of israel's 9000000 population has received at least one dose of the pfizer job palestine has had to rely mostly on its own vaccine vaccine procurement as well as the un's kovacs scheme for developing nations germany's military is sending medical staff and equipment to portugal as the country deals with one of the world's worst coronavirus outbreaks health ministry data shows that there are only 7 intensive care beds left on the mainland out of 850 some critically ill patients being sent to portuguese islands including madeira portugal has the highest 7 day average of infections and death per capita globally well regarded but it is in charge of public health at the catholic university of portugal and he says cases are beginning to fall for the pressure on hospitals is likely to continue for several weeks. this situation is only comparable truly to to

a tsunami in the sense of the number of infections that we are seeing on the rise. for weeks on words and this of course then translate into more patients going in to . 'd our rooms would send leads to more people being admitted to hospital beds and then into ice you beds and sadly to higher death rates we've been seeing this ongoing now for 2 months actually up to 3 months now and the truth is only last friday we started to see the true slowdown in a rise of new cases following the closing of schools and more strict lockdown that was imposed 2 weeks before sadly though as we all know the lockdown measures tend to have a long delay between intersecting the number of new infections and then affecting the number of hospital admissions so all projections are for seeing that the 1st
6:37 pm
fortnight of february will be of even greater pressure in portugal and even going beyond the hospital beds that we have in the public service if you bring in the private sector really only have around $1250.00 i.c.u. bats in total and we've passed the 800 we're basically at 850 s. you beds just for kobe patients and mind you that we are in the middle of the winter we typically have many more patients with other diseases the typical rate at which we use i.c.u. beds in the winter in normal times would be around 80 percent so this is a high risk situation not just for copd patients but for everyone. public gatherings and curfew restrictions being extended by 2 weeks in south korea the decision follows a covert 19 up break in missionary schools last week which caused a spike in infections strictly distancing measures have been in place since early december and will continue until the end of the upcoming lunar new year holidays.
