a briefing. setting a precedent hong kong's highest court denies bail to media tycoon jimmy lie used charged under beijing's controversial national security law. following the despicable attack on january the 6th there must there must be truth and accountability and the stage is set by donald trump's senate impeachment trial his lawyers deny he incited supporters to storm capitol hill. we begin a man maher where we're seeing 1st signs of a military crackdown on protesters who've been rallying for a 4th straight day there are reports of police firing warning shots into the air to try to break up rallies in the capital naif a door or at least 27 people have been arrested in the 2nd largest city mandalay police have also used tear gas and water cannon against demonstrate. a ban on large

gatherings has been extended to include the country's capital and yan gone but many are defying those warnings and the anger against the agenda has also grown overseas in the last few hours new zealand has become the 1st country to announce action against the ruling military. every new zealander would be devastated to see after years of working so hard to build a democracy in may and to see. what we've seen in recent days unfold lead by the military our strong message is we will do what we can from here in new zealand and one of the things we can do is to spin and their high level dialogue at a political level we can put in place travel bans and we can make sure that the aid funding we put into me does not in any way support the military regime. not just got hard days following all these developments from bangkok for us and scott it feels like there's a slow but steady increase of pressure on the protesters there an increase in the

extension of the ban on protests gunshots fired me a tear gas water cannon. it definitely has been slowly and steady click up in the way that the security forces are dealing with the protesters there on the streets of myanmar and we've kind of see their actions kind of scale up over the last 4 days these mass gatherings we've seen across the country over the last 4 days and then today on tuesday we've seen the scale up if you will of the security forces in their response to those thousands of protesters going on the streets no so far today you know yesterday on monday we had a bit of water cannon usage around the neighborhood or in the pit or the capitol today tuesday or around the country we've seen a scaling up of the retaliation if you will or the attempts to try to control these thousands of protesters and that came from as you mentioned live fire warning shots we've seen rubber bullets being fired and we've seen tear gas and then the water
11:04 am
cannon again in multiple locations so it is definitely scaling up what's interesting that we've been speaking to some people on the ground in young gone there 2 main areas where the protests are staged over the last several days and again today on tuesday and that's by city hall and then another area a main intersection near yangon university and we saw early pictures at least by the city hall that the police had already prepared with barricades and and water cannon and a lot of trucks they were ready for that so right now we're hearing that those those are 2 the 2 main areas in the one by the university there is actually a line lines of riot police water cannon and then military there as well so obviously yes there the security forces are have definitely beefed up their presence there stance it was interesting over the weekend and we saw tens of thousands of people come out they really were there was a very soft presence particularly young gun obviously those days are over right now they're showing their force and they're out on the streets and all these thousands
11:05 am
of protests isn't any need to be controlled. not at all steadily as i was saying we've seen numbers growing over the last particularly the last 4 days but what's interesting is the people that are coming out the groups that are supporting the the the movement the anti cool movement has grown steadily as well that includes civil service workers that includes trade unions student unions teacher unions they're coming out in force and they're coming all from all walks of life so they are defiant yes definitely what their message is the message they're trying to send but then also it seems to be that they're reaching out even into the further areas of society within me and more so yes very defined so you know you look at the way you look at it right now both sides the lines in the sand that they have to have drawn are there and they don't seem to be waving whatsoever we've seen you see the end it's the 1st country to come out strongly against the coup should we expect other countries to follow suit.
11:06 am
i would imagine you'll start to see more countries coming forward now what's interesting you know a lot of what we were hearing before new zealand made that move companies that have business interests with companies in myanmar that are connected to the military we started to see some pulling off of deals there was a japanese brewery that pulled back there was a tobacco company from hong kong that a pullback or a financier from hong kong or sorry singapore at that a pullback so we started to see that and then this is the 1st step by a nation saying they're severing ties with the military junta in myanmar we're going to hear a special session of the united nations human rights council on friday and you can imagine that the the wording the rhetoric that will come out of that will be pretty strong it'll be interesting to see what action comes out of that the u.n. security council has already issued a statement last week even before what the mass protests we saw really swell over the weekend but will be interesting to see what comes after that human rights

people are leading the seats in every way. iran is beginning its mass vaccination program frontline health care workers are amongst the 1st to receive the russian developed sputnik vaccine live to jabari she's standing by for us in tehran dr house has been rolled out. well these ceremonies was overseen by the president by a video conference the vents took place at khomeini hospital in central tehran it was a 1000 vaccines that iran got from russia last week and the 1st person to receive the job was the health minister's own son who had volunteered to be the 1st person in the country to be vaccinated the president said that he hopes this will be the 1st step in the country combating this virus and overcoming it eventually iran has
11:09 am
ordered so far 2000000 of the sputnik the vaccine from russia they've also older ordered another 16000000 through kovacs program of other vaccines that they hope to receive in the coming months the health officials that said that their mass vaccination program won't really have the effect that they want in terms of mass immunization until the beginning of next year but this is certainly been seen as a welcome start to that goal and how does the iranians feel about taking this vaccine. well we've asked so many people over the past few weeks and there is one common thread in the answers that is if we see officials getting the vaccine 1st then we are more likely to trust those vaccines and this was the exact reason why the officials chose to have somebody from within their government to be the 1st
11:10 am
person to get it meaning the health minister son who volunteer the other people who receive this vaccine initially will be health care frontline workers there's $430000.00 of them so the 1st group of people in the country will be those workers but in general people are optimistic that if the officials have positive results from these vaccines they are most likely to get them as well after member iran is one of the hardest hit countries in this region with one point nearly 1500000 people infected and the death toll is reaching close to 60000 there's been the number of waves that iranians have seen in this country they are now expecting a 4th wave to come into the country in the next few months but the health officials are warning they are trying to prevent that from taking place by urging people to continue to observe the protocols that are set up by them. in tehran for us thanks to also. home holmes top court has denied bail to media tycoon jimmy lie he

is accused of fraud and conspiring with foreign forces under beijing's controversial national security law is the most high profile in the months more than 100 people have been arrested under the new legislation the 73 year old is to remain in custody until his trial is heard which is his ruling is likely to set a precedent for future trials paula reports from hong kong. to realize i was in 4th for less than 10 minutes before you found out you would not be given bail so he has now been taken back into custody presumably presumably until his trial on april 16th this is also the 1st trial by andrew johns holmes new chief justice that took the helm on in january and he's told jimmy lies legal team but they can challenge this but not back at the courts a final appeal but so that sets a nother dilemma for jr and his legal team that's if you recall in december he was
11:12 am
granted bail by one of the lower courts that was challenge by the department of justice who said that the lower courts did not understand the tenets of the national security law and this is why jimmy life took his case or took his challenge to that ruling back to the courts of final appeal now this sets many kinds of precedents for one thing there was a lot of attention being paid to this it was the 1st case to reach the national security law case $3.00 to $4.00 courts of final appeal and of jimmy alive also had gotten bail but also said in another precedent meaning that those charges on the national security law would be able to get bail but this ruling now essentially means that. unless you have the resources and means to challenge the national security law and the rulings given even before trial it is very unlikely you will get bail. is a human rights lawyer he joins us live via skype from hong kong good to have you
11:13 am
with this is a landmark case isn't it for the national security you know what does this ruling mean for the pro-democracy activists. well the obviously jimmy law is very high profile. the and the wider issues are freedom of speech here. this specific ruling was just on bail but that's important there's provisions in there in a national security law. and the court has basically determined that a very high threshold to get bail. the usual understanding of bail is that you know basically the the government has to do the running to show why they need to keep you detained and here the court has upheld this quite draconian provision that says. that almost there's a presumption that you should be detained so it's kind of
11:14 am
a reverse onus provision so that's very worrying for people who might be charged under this national security legislation how much pressure hong kong courts underfund beijing well at say you know that's the big wider question here is that the national security legislation ultimately the interpretation is left in the hands of the national people's congress or the standing committee so that's the concern if that's going to be used if they're going to change interpretations by our highest court again that would be a further erosion of the independent of the judiciary in hong kong what do you make of these reports of the 1st trial to the national security law to be held without said during. yeah looking at that you know when when the national security law came into being that was one of the provisions we were concerned about
11:15 am
to you know basically the use of that and any of those provisions that to take away nibble away at fairness of the hearing for the for the person concerned so watching that very closely ok many thanks for taking time to join us from hong kong thank you. so has hair on al-jazeera. i'm in the ground i'm in northern india where rescuers are attempting to free dozens of people trapped in a tunnel since a catastrophic flood ripped through this mountainous region. and colombia gives legal status to hundreds of thousands of undocumented dennis wayne and the refugees and migrants.

a lot of people in that country that we've obviously visited many times are going to be surprised by this tool they've seen the rule of law in that country continually undercut by this administration itself and by politicians in general in the country now what there is an implication here for is not just one orlando in on this but also for the new u.s. president joe biden because he rolled out he said he was going to have a $1000000000.00 plan in central america to tackle the root causes of migration so the violence the economic situation and corruption now the question is going to be how is he going to do that in partnership because that's the plan with a government like the one of one orlando and then there's the u.s. federal prosecutors now are investigating for corruption that's going to be really tricky for the new president as he tries to cut the causes of migration off at the root. opposition politicians in haiti have names their own president in an effort
