last week's military coup mean miles military rulers have imposed a curfew in the 2 biggest cities yang gong mandalay and also banned large gatherings water cannon and rubber bullets were used against protesters on tuesday only follow one of the few western journalist based in me and mark joins us now from. just take us through what you've been seeing and hearing there. well 6 her as you mentioned there is if people have been talking to the streets again was when that a 2nd day since they declared martial law and young going to round up part of the country but it doesn't seem to have the protesters we've seen that just as many numbers if not more coming out it's today and yesterday and depending on the area where you go to rhyme try and the atmosphere is very different you can see behind you here it's nearing the end of the day still quite a few people no longer rides in this area this is the 2nd girl remembered me in the
1:03 pm
city hall it's an area soon a central dime time oh nice that's just the atmosphere and you can hear you might be ok has been significant protest so primary night made a lot of a very jubilant feeling here but other cuts in the city that's been much more tension this been a bit of a killing these protests the stand off and let that be further north in the city and i was there for several hours yesterday and they don't want to kind of i know you're going to tell the riot police of course the protesters but protesters take you to the can get out raincoat some sort of instead of like in response to the want to come out and there was some military in the background which were definitely making people out that nothing so far as happens here and of across the country there we have seen much more brutal crackdown and there's a fear that that will spread. by the protesters you're talking to ali anticipating a similar. reaction today or tomorrow going forward from the military authorities.
1:04 pm
yes i got you took today we're pretty safe and it's nearing the end of the day as i said so many people are starting to. go home so i think so wednesday today wednesday we're not really seeing it which seems very unlike you know we'll see any violence in yamba but certainly that's what's on the minds of many protesters right as my 2nd today has been gathering up they've been helmets they've been buying gloves and he's got to throw but. take us and protect himself. they've been talking about getting stopped best because they've been rumors of these. trained military dogs coming down to kind of antagonize the protest crowds in order to provoke a riots and some sort of. you know just some eyes a crackdown if you well and so definitely the fear is in the air and people are
1:05 pm
gathering up there also i went to what i read today to meet some protesters and they were pretty much surrounded by undercover police that pretty easy to spot had a special branch that called the military intelligence as well and and said they ended up discussing and playing footy early on they didn't really end up getting a proper gathering in that area so certainly still tension i am not about to rest in hiding and and definitely expectation that at some point there will be a brutal crime that thank you very much on a file talking to us live from young go on. ok the other big story here on the news hour rescuers are using drones to search inside a tunnel with $35.00 work when are believed to be trapped in the indian states which are coming down the tunnel and much of the surrounding area was flooded on sunday when it collapsed power plants and roads all destroyed $32.00 people have died at least $190.00 are still missing rescuers spent days removing enough deborah
1:06 pm
to allow teams to enter the tunnel that's about piron and joins us live now from top of a where people are still trapped lives hi there what's the latest on the rescue operation. peter well the rescue operation is continuing people are removing that large amounts of sludge from the inside the tunnel but i have to say that there are fewer people here then they were yesterday the aim remains to reach around 180 meters from the entrance of the tunnel because rescuers believe that if the minister the live the best chance of finding them a pockets of air that are about 180 meters they got to 110 meters yesterday but when i spoke to the head of the rescue operations just a short while ago he said they were only able to go up to 115 meters today and the biggest challenge remains the amount of sludge at any time they make a little bit of progress in fact they moved up to 120 meters this morning but there's more sludge that's forming from the inside and and pushing them back and
1:07 pm
they know that time isn't on their side it's been more than 72 hours now since the tunnel was flooded they say the 1st 72 hours of the most critical in saving lives meanwhile the frustration here is growing among relatives of the men inside the tunnel who've been coming here and waiting for news of residents of the area and they say that the rescue operation is not moving fast enough so many big projects in that immediate vicinity liz you know not just power plants but the infrastructure that goes with them is that may be. what happened here. it's once again put the highlight on all of these large infrastructure projects in the region we've had scientists do an aerial survey of the place here part of which broke off and study the damage along the flood path and they're saying that an ice sheet fell off the non the the mountain and and it took large amounts of land mass
1:08 pm
downstream with it we've had a local politicians saying you know asking parliament to set up some kind of a mechanism to study that they can prevent such disasters but a group of scientists have come out and said that they were tasked with doing exactly that in 2014 and they warned them that this would happen they said then that melting ice is going to lead to landslides to avalanches to such floods and the construction of such dams in a fragile ecosystem is dangerous they have been protests in the past to stop such projects but nonetheless there are something like 50 hydroelectric power plants in this region off of that arc and. liz thank you very much elizabeth there on the reporting live from top of. the liz i'm sure. plenty more still to come for you here on the news hour including a lifeline to the outside world to people in gaza as

a border crossing stays open for the 1st time in years. and fears coronavirus can survive on frozen food packaging leads to a backlog of imports in china plus. i'm on the richardson we club world cup in qatar where buying munich are in sight of a unique trophy suite of mexico can stop. the u.s. senate has voted to proceed with the 2nd impeachment trial of donald trump rejecting a defense argument that it's unconstitutional to try a former president senators were shown video evidence on day one of the trial showing his supporters breaking their way into the u.s. capitol alan fisher is on capitol hill to tell us what to expect over the coming days. in a place that has seen a lot over this truly was an historic day the 2nd impeachment trial of donald trump
1:10 pm
before the senate can even begin to question whether or not he was guilty of high crimes and misdemeanors whether he sent a crowd towards capitol hill for a violent insurrection aimed at overturning the results of a democratic election there is the question of whether or not it was constitutional to put him on trial the democrats said absolutely he had to be held responsible for what he did in those final days in office his defense team argued that he's no longer in office and so it's too early our case is based on call hard facts people died that day officers ended up with head damage and brain damage people's eyes were galloped off for a heart attack after last 3 fingers that day. 2 officers have taken their own lives senators this
1:11 pm
cannot be our future this cannot be the future of america we cannot have presidents inciting and mobilizing mob violence against our government and our institutions because they refused to accept the will of the people under the constitution of the united states was also an unforgivable betrayal of the oath of office of president trump the oath he swore an oath that he sullied and dishonored to advance his own personal interests but all times defense team said that what happened on capitol hill on january the 6th was horrendous but also putting him on trial was unconstitutional this they argued was simply the democrats carrying out a partisan political hit job on a man they didn't want to see run for office again forgetting that 10 republicans had also voted for the impeachment of donald trump you will not hear any member of
1:12 pm
the team representing former president drum they anything but in the strongest possible way denounce the violence of the. rioters and those that breach the capital of the very settled law of our democracy we can't possibly be suggesting that we punish people for political speech in this country with this trial you will open up new and bigger wounds across the nation for a great many americans see this process for exactly what it is a chance by a group of partisan politicians seeking to eliminate donald trump from the american political scene the senate has no voted to push ahead with the hearing it will begin on wednesday one republican senator was asked why he voted to make sure that the hearing would go ahead he said that the house team led by jimmy raskin was much more focused and answered the questions that were in front of them whereas donald
1:13 pm
trump's team was much more unfocused almost as if they were trying to avoid the central question of whether or not he was responsible for the violence that was seen here on capitol hill what is clear is that donald trump's team will have to be a lot more focused as they move in to the important part of the impeachment proceedings will donald trump be convicted it's still a long shot but his legal team will have to perform much better than they did on day one. the white house says the president joe biden is focused on the economy and will not be spending much time watching his predecessor's impeachment trial by met chief executives or several big firms including wal-mart and j.p. morgan to discuss his proposed $1.00 trillion dollar relief package the president is trying to boost support for the package the faces opposition from republicans. rival factions hamas and fatah have strengthened their commitment to prepare to hold the 1st elections for palestinians in 15 years the talks in cairo they agreed
1:14 pm
to respect the timetable and the results of parliamentary and presidential votes in may and july palestinian governance has been divided between faster in the occupied west bank and hamas in gaza palestinian police will be solely responsible for guarding polling stations for the 1st time in years egypt has indefinitely opened its rougher border crossing with the gaza strip now the crossing is the only passage to the outside world for gaza that isn't controlled by israel the move comes on the 2nd day of talks between palestinian factions in cairo. you know a program is live for us in ramallah in the occupied west bank the function's meeting in cairo agreed on the way to move forward with elections tell us more about that. they'd release the statement after they concluded to a meeting in cairo and which they said that they were going forward with holding elections that with announced by a presidential decree the 1st elections would be held back that to be held or just
1:15 pm
that the council elections and both the fatah and hamas have agreed and the palestinian factions involved have agreed on some of the obstacles that would kind of stopping elections for 15 years such as holding courts that will be dealing with with elections complaints from judges from the occupied west bank and the gaza strip and indeed having the palestinian police oversee the polling station and while many palestinians have been relieved to hear the news of what the elections and the factions agreeing they still many still say that anything could happen between now and may that could disrupt this process including some of the logistical details when it comes to israel allowing palestinians from east jerusalem to cast their ballots but it's important to know why these factions are big the on the issue of holding elections they've kind of posed hole in the issue
1:16 pm
of conciliation till after the elections in the past the conciliation was considered the 1st step in front of holding elections but it seems now that the rules will reverse and we're going to be seeing potentially elections 1st and then discussions when it comes to reconciliation what else do we know about the opening of the rough crossing that or how significant is that. so many palestinians are seeing this as a relief for thousands of already been registering their names with the interior ministry in gaza and they hope that they can make their way into egypt it's their only lifeline to the outside world but more than $3300.00 people would be allowed in at the time now some are linking the scotians in colorado to the opening of the crossing they believe that maybe it's just her from the egyptians it's the 1st time for it to be open since the 24th seed and many are still concerned that while
1:17 pm
they're happy that the crossing is open is that they're concerned that they're not going to be treated greatly specifically due to some security concerns by the egyptian what do you do when he takes a 5 hour. trip which huge when it expires hours could potentially take 2 days to thank you very much not able to him our correspondent reporting live from ramallah well for more on this let's bring in tamer comments he's a professor in public policy and administration of the institute for graduate studies time outcome of welcome to the news a couple of years ago how must in fact could barely agree to sit down in the same room together so what's changed here. hi peter thank you very much. well there are i think i mean in my opinion i think there are 2 important developments 1st of all is the level of the bite in a solution with the new energy and the commitment to
1:18 pm
a 2 state solution and the 2nd alarming thing is the organization of these with that which also pours the pressure on the scene authority see many of the genes and governments normalizing with these are so i think these 2 developments moralists set the stage for the palestinians to ringback try and work out somebody judgments . 40 conciliation for elections. but but now i mean i i mean personally i think we have to be cautious here because this is not the 1st i mean i mean to put it a pm is a quality of conciliation events happened before and we haven't seen them materialize we have seen many celebrations before over the last 10 years that have been if my memory serves me 8 attempts to reconcile 2 of them the latest happened in cairo and people were celebrating and then nothing happened with comes implementation so the devil is in that either i wouldn't say we are of the year but i see the genesee why what's what's there to work for the 2 sides what are 2
1:19 pm
parties to move on or try to make it succeed at least ok for the palestinian electorate for palestinian voters is this completely good news i mean have they just had enough of hamas and fattah not getting on with each other. nor the elder bush without seeing i mean i mean i mean 15 years of really left. and very dark a negative reality forward for people in gaza and that was back but gaza is being also have to have it a price because of that a solution and because of so easily that the cause of their stand at the national community took 2 hours and it come out as what but but i mean for me what they would even be warning about i mean yes i mean people of the right to celebrate or even to to seem to be opt out of optimistic about it but i mean for me as someone who's really. following these events that led a p.
1:20 pm
issues that i mean i mean that should have been taken care offered at this before going to an election and if these issues are not that that is my fear is that even if their actions taken place they were just you know to another miserable political system and it would just sort of the fire and minds the outcomes of the split something with me for interrupting a time occur is that something that hamas and the fattah leadership are aware of i mean to put it another way what are the election issues here or are the election issues for hamas and fattah just who do people vote for do they vote for us how massport are they vote for us fattah. well. i mean that if it's in the room i mean for me as someone who was a political analyst following this i mean none of these 2 parties the biggest parties have agreed in any political project on how to deal with these that 1st of all and this is one of the source or the main causes of the split to start with we don't have a political project
1:21 pm
a unified one secondly i mean let's talk about post-election will that the national community for example of how mass whens again even if it doesn't take a majority will then to community accept doing gauge of how matters as the as legitimate presented to the president people that's also a big question who's going to out for example who's going to pay the repaired bit of the split meaning merging but i mean politically and i've been assertively and government wise missing 2 entities in the west bank and gaza strip as one example civil servants one of the bigger it was going to be the salaries there are so many important the ticking bombs in this deal or in this dialogue that no one has at this until now to my to my knowledge i mean there have been some some some policies solution some some research on these issues but there has been no political decision on this mission issues and now the 2 parties many i mean we know that you
1:22 pm
had islam is not even participating in this and these elections but how much in fact the are moving forward and without dealing with any of this issue so what happens if yes the elections take place and then again we're back to block i mean it's all political are we going to move on ok that's the end i support outside it has no say whatsoever in this election again that's a very alarming sight we have to leave it there but a really interesting conversation thank you so much team up come out there talking to us on skype from the us thank you thank you peter thank you person. please 4 people have been killed and 5 others were injured in 3 separate bomb attacks in the afghan capital kabul one happened near the ministry of labor in the city center the other 2 explosions targeted police vehicles this comes a day after unidentified gunman killed 4 government workers indonesian investigators say a plane crash last month in which 62 people were killed may have been caused by technical issues. flight 22 crush shortly after takeoff from jakarta into the java sea on january the 9th one of the victims' relatives is suing the engines
1:23 pm
manufacturer boeing. jessica washington joins us live now from jakarta or so what else jessica has the investigation found so far. peter it's one month since the sri would crash and these are still very much the early days of the investigation the investigation could take a year as we've seen in previous aviation disasters but what we have learned today is what investigators are sort of honing in on we know that they are focusing on some potential technical anomalies in particular issues with the auto throttle system what they have announced today is that this particular aircraft this 26 year old boeing $737500.00 has had issues with its auto total system in the process and just days before the crash pilots who flew this aircraft noted these issues and on january 5th just 4 days before the crash it was maintenance on the auto throttle
1:24 pm
system now authorities say that that does not necessarily mean the investigation is only focusing on not systems but all the potential technical factors as well and of course the potential for human error this investigation is confident by a lot of the cockpit voice recorder investigators all still continuing the search not to but because as we've heard from aviation experts whatever technical anomalies the pilots may have experienced on board and however they compounded it won't necessarily have a sense of the troubles they face with this aircraft and how they attempted to respond to them until we have access to those recordings now finding that cockpit voice recorder is being hampered by the weather conditions here in jakarta is the monsoon season this heavy rain and some flooding in areas and that means that there is heavy mud covering parts of the java sea where the cockpit voice recorder is currently located authorities say they will continue the search for that device no
1:25 pm
matter how long it takes this is likely to be a link. process peter you know that with the previous lion air dissolved it took around 3 months or trade the cockpit voice recorder and the final investigation was an elf until about a year off to the crops jessica thanks so much cisco washington there reporting live from jakarta. several european cities are experiencing heavy snow this week the deep freeze in the netherlands in the return of ice skating on canals and with the subzero temperatures expected to continue the craze is creating new challenges for thorough says during the pandemic step as this report from amsterdam. i scaping favor and then that will and for the diehards at least because the ice is still an unreliable snow and ice are a great relief after months of lockdown and even curfew and these extreme winters have become so rare that this is all the dutch are talking about as you can see my bench was quite wet so the 1st trail not that good but afterwards it was perfect so
1:26 pm
you went straight chromatic straight through. and this is a unique opportunity for the dutch to turned a few hills in this flat country into a playground the country has become awfully out of practice this is one of the main public transport hubs and i'm so that but trams and trains and metros and busses are barely functioning or not functioning at all over the past locations vaccination locations are closed garbage is barely collected so much of public life must come to a standstill and only because of 30 centimeters of snow. and what freezing temperatures continue for the rest of the week many here are getting their ice skates ready to shop and hundreds of ice skates that need to be shopping by the end of the week to me go really are getting crazy just know our shirts and

temperatures really drop from we've had the lowest in the highlands of scotland for 10 years the real cold is just in south and baltic and that wind in hans's the feeling of the wind is lighter than it was and the steering around the base is coat means all the weather proper which is when the rain is going through spain and the mediterranean so here's the division of the gulf at the moment now daytime temperatures haven't come across above freezing in germany and the netherlands for example for a couple of days this is a result of the real cold spell that snowstorm that came through and now you're sitting in it in the netherlands with ice over everything starts falling out of the sky has moved away now and that's really going up through ukraine and better responsible but the cold is being pushed further size down through the balkans for example for cross montenegro shows a drop in temperature we're down to plus 3 but i get assassinated snow going through that wind change now friday's general picture is cold everywhere we see exceptions of our size of france on this western side of the mediterranean where

against time to reach dozens of workers trapped in a tunnel area flooded collapsed washing away roads and houses 32 people have died 190 are missing. the u.s. senate has voted to move forward with the 2nd impeachment trial of the former president on trump house impeachment managers rejected a defense argument that it's unconstitutional to prosecute a president after he's left office. the era peen commission president has expressed regrets over the e.u. slow vaccine rollout on the line admitted the targets haven't been met and the block was and where it wanted to be in the fight against the virus not new stands in for bizarre and lame we were late with the approval we were too optimistic on mass production and perhaps you're also too certain that the orders would actually be delivered on time. we're going live tonight in barber in london shortly 1st let's get the latest from the who's in paris natasha hi there any preserving
1:32 pm
questioning on the line over her handling of the vaccine strategy what are they been saying yes we're hearing a lot of frustration from members of the european parliament who are questioning the head of the european union commission on the line over the use of vaccine strategy she has over the last few weeks faced a lot of personal criticism over her handling of the vaccine rollout which many any piece pointed out today has been simply too slow many m.p. any piece worried about the fact that the delivery of doses has been slow they want to know why companies like fires madonna and astra zeneca have been able to reduce the number of doses they can deliver at the beginning of this year why the e.u. is allowing that to happen why the e.u. perhaps didn't better manage its contracts a lot of questions from any piece and particularly why only 3 percent of adults in
1:33 pm
the block have actually been vaccinated with at least one doses so far of the covert 900 vaccine several m e p's pointing out that that is of course a much lower rate than that of the u.s. and the u.k. countries also like israel so a lot of frustration a very peace a lot of questions to the head of the e.u. commission has been obviously in charge overseeing this vaccine strategy questions over why there hasn't been more responsibility accountability and transparency from vaughn's alone and how has she been defending herself. well it's only been an opportunity for them to lie and to defend herself because as i said she has been under so much personal criticism over the last few weeks this has been an opportunity for her in many ways also to perhaps carra farai some misconceptions about the vaccine strategy one of the most important points said want to learn is that you're looking at trying to vaccinate nearly 500000000 people
1:34 pm
it's not just one country we talk about 27 member states that's hugely challenging she said now of course she has admitted that there have been mistakes made the e.u. should have done more for example to boost its production capacity should've had more foresight in in trying to instill more of a sense of urgency into the whole process of the vaccine rollout she has admitted that the e.u. has been slow in that she repeated her claim again that managing such a crisis is what she calls a marathon something in the long term rather than a sprint she said that in order to fix some of these problems she is putting in place a task force which would look at boosting vaccine production in the future she hoped that 70 percent of the adult population in the block would be vaccinated by the end of the summer and she reminded also any pays that $700000000000.00 worth of recovery fund has been put in place by the e.u. which will help post pandemic the tasha thank you very much well new hotel
1:35 pm
quarantine measures are expected to dominate question time in the british parliament today as of february the 15th people traveling to the u.k. from so-called red list countries will have to quarantine in a hotel for 10 days the government is asking ourselves near sea ports to join the scheme but there are concerns about capacity barbour joins us live from london with that aspect of the story in europe not in tell us more about the plans for people arriving from other countries. yeah that's right peter you gave us a brief outline it's very controversial what the government has said at the moment around 1300 people arrived into the u.k. from the 33 countries on the so-called red list notably countries in south america southern africa including south africa and portugal now what the health secretary has said is that from next monday you k. residents returning to england's flying into england from one of those countries
1:36 pm
will have to pay around $2.00 and a half $1000.00 to be. to stay in a so-called quarantine hotel for 10 days and there are also plans for all international arrivals not just those people but people coming from anywhere to pay for their own tests covered $19.00 tests on day 2 and day 8 of currency now the controversial bit is that the plans include fines of up 210000 pounds that's around 141-4000 dollars or up to 10 years in jail for anyone who has a lie about their travel routes to try to hide the fact that they were in one of those red list countries now the government is saying that this is necessary because of the worry about new variance in coverage 19 grant shapps the transport secretary on the radio this morning said we don't want to be in
1:37 pm
a situation where later on we discover there's a problem with the vaccines of course britain being seen as a good example of the vaccine rollouts in contrast to the e.u. as you're hearing from natasha but many people are worried about those very tough tough new penalties the former attorney general dominic grieve has said sounding off in this way with suggestions of draconian and completely disproportionate sentences for an offense is a mistake other conservative m.p.'s agree the op. vission labor party says it shouldn't be a substitute for an effective quarantine system they want all international arrivals put into a hotel for 10 days that's something the scottish government say they will introduce 19 thank you very much 19 but there reporting live from london mandatory testing of frozen food imports in china is being blamed for a backlog of container ships the chinese authorities say contaminated packaging is spreading the corona virus but the health authorities say the claims are baseless
1:38 pm
and it's costing suppliers millions of dollars sort of flock reports now from hong kong. this is a mandatory process in china all frozen seafood imports must be tested for the corona virus after it was found on food packaging in june last year but the regulations are causing congestion at ports and hundreds of container ships are held up in the north china i think somehow is more of a problem in most china less so in. the south quite a lot of a car goes what directed it to korea ports some of the. china they have no choice and then they get the shanghai and outbreak in the north eastern city of delhi and last month was linked to frozen food imports dock workers who handle the goods tested positive for coated 19 or thor is blamed food packaging but the world health organization has questioned the link the reason that some of those food
1:39 pm
handlers are got infected is probably that the north perfect social distancing measures that the great transmission of the virus from the contaminated food to human beings that should be wary rare are the way the restrictions are causing long delays the shortage of imported food supplies into china the most immediate impact will be a sudden and imbalance of the flow of the food supply you know into and out of china china is to you a country that is very very very hungry for protein and china by all day there are natural resources is a huge importer of great seafood from around awhile that was quite high for the frozen foods like. cherry from australia cherries from. all sort of frozen from brazil here in hong kong the government has followed china's

lead and it's now extended testing to include frozen food items it's not testing a wider variety of food items. from around 30 countries the city's health chief says the risk of infection from touching the surface of frightened packaging is minimal and so far no cases have been recorded the shortage of ports and risk of long delays has prompted some companies to cancel shipments to china but chinese authorities are showing no signs up on the regulation sarah clarke al-jazeera hong kong. the mexican capital has eased coronavirus restrictions extending opening hours for restaurants and shops that's despite the country reporting nearly 4000 new cases and around 530 deaths in the past 24 hours has more now from mexico city where struggling restaurant owners the preparing to welcome more customers the the streets of the mexican capital are returning to their usual hustle and bustle the
