hello i'm down in jordan this is al jazeera life and also coming up more allies of the unsung suchi are arrested as the u.s. announces sanctions against me in miles military over the recent coup. the former commander of colombia's fock rebel group was questioned over the killing of a presidential candidate. she was a powerful advocate for women's rights and really sure was the right thing to do the u.s. president joe biden welcomes the release of saudi women's rights activists are saying al has moon who spent years in jail. democrats in the u.s. senate have been presenting their case that former president donald trump's 2nd impeachment trial on capitol hill they showed never before seen surveillance video and played dispatch calls from frantic police all this as rioters approached and

stormed the seat of government on january 6th describing him as insider in chief impeachment trial prosecutors say trump was fully responsible for the deadly attack and should therefore be convicted and banned from public office this remains unlikely republican senators have indicated they're unwilling to vote against trump and risk the wrath of his supporters but impeachment manager joaquin castro said trump did nothing even when the rioters went looking for his vice president mike pence over an hour and a half into the attack and this is what he tweeted and he still even at this point did not acknowledge the attack on the capitol let alone condemn it instead he further incites the mob against his own vice president whose life was being threatened some of these insurgents were heard saying quote that they hoped to find vice president mike pence and execute him by

hanging him from a capitol hill tree as a traitor well another impeachment manager stacey plaskett produced videos showing rioters looking for the house speaker nancy pelosi the chilling evidence shows that on january 6th armed and organized insurrectionists trained their sights on speaker pelosi they sought out the speaker on the floor and in her office publicly declared their intent to harm or kill her ransacked her office and terrorize her staff and they did it because donald trump sent them on this mission and so they came draped in trump's flag. and used our flag the american flag to batter and to bludgeon and at 230 i heard that term flying banging on house chamber doors. for the

thier drawing the lines they have taken the 11 minute 13 minute video that they sure don't choose the and they've gone broader and they've gone deeper they've shown donald trump in the build up to the election saying that the only way he was going to lose was if it would be stolen from him the showed the tweets when he was telling people after the election that they had to stop the steel that they had to fight to save their country and they're showing the people on the streets who are following his orders according to the impeachment managers by showing up at the homes of elected officials of all election officials and also threatening them saying that they must continue to stop this deal so all of these things drawing lines exactly to the point where the more move towards the capitol hill on january the 6th we're told that there's going to be some pretty graphic video that will be shown in the next part of the session this is security camera video that is being
6:06 am
shown here and no speaking to a few people have been texting them or been. listening to the republicans to find out what they think they think a couple of people have been speaking to think there's a very strong case here against donald trump but one of the makes the point look you're never going to get the republicans to vote against donald trump in the numbers they need to convict him in the senate so let's bring in jeff hauser he's a lawyer and executive director of the revolving door project at the center for economic and policy research joins us via skype from washington d.c. jeff so lots to unpack here look we saw a very compelling case laid out by the impeachment managers using at times they saw their harrowing video as the capital was being storm what did you make then that the strength of their case. the strength of their case is commendable they have this hill a complex event into a format that is easily understood and i think if there were
6:07 am
a secret ballot they would get overwhelming support in the senate and they have done as good a job as is possible and making the determination of this trial not about the democrats but about the republicans the republican party is now on trial the republican party can prove itself a meaningful part of a democratic society by voting to and dollars from influence in the party and to convict him or they can retain non-combat their leader in fact even if not in title and i think then the democrats will have their work cut out for them but they will realize that the republican party is not a party with which you can cooperate if you believe and small the democracy and the rule of law and just how much is the impeachment case resting on donald trump's failure to cool off his supporters of the violence some folded because this is the
6:08 am
basis of the case isn't it that he incited the riots in the 1st place. yeah i think it it all connects in a very particular way which is that don competitive and weaving toward these events going back to june of 2020 he's been laying the groundwork that if he is not declared the victor it had to do that which of course makes no sense given the amount of republicans in power across the country and that of course he is the president the most powerful person in the entire country but he had been laying the groundwork but we now learned today that he had a phone call with senator tom riddle of alabama and heard about the garage that my pants his vice president and the senate was under so we now know we have a chronology of when did trump know it wasn't what did he know and when did you know it and then his failure to act for another couple of hours is incredibly damning and underscores the idea that what was occurring was not against his wishes
6:09 am
but was in fact and he demands made of his wishes that be acts which appear to be inciting we can assume ok we can infer intent jeff let's talk about the defense team because they got a chance to state their case tomorrow but they've already said that trump was simply exercising his 1st amendment rights to freedom of speech and that the right was pretty preplanned how robust is that argument do you think. i nodded off just because you use words doesn't mean that you cannot be committing a crime even with free speech if you use your voice activated vice to set off a bomb that is still. highly intact and you will be charged criminally you know you used words inciting a mob there's been standards in american law for how to assess that for many decades and so there's clearly no good and all sorts of acts which are criminal can
6:10 am
be conducted using words and i think basic problem is that trump has warriors who don't act like they went to law school just at this stage it's unlikely that trump will get convicted as republican senators are likely to choose policy of the country but what do you see as the broader impact of this trial in terms of firstly the trump legacy and also as a benchmark as a future presidents coming to the end of the. i think that i don't know that we know the long term implications until we see if the republican party suffers real accountability for having stood by trump i don't think we will know how this is thought of 10 to 20 years from now until we see how the 2022 midterm elections go the 2024 presidential and congressional actions i think it's dangerous that republicans did so well down ballot under donald trump in 2020
6:11 am
after having been defeated pretty significant way in 2018 i think that is bad substance by that sent an even worse message but that was before the events of january sets and i think we will only know how people interpret these recent events when we see the downstream political consequences jeff just a final thought to you if trump is not convicted in this impeachment trial is there any other civil course of action that could be taken against him even though he's no longer president. he faces a multitude of possible consequences ranging from the senate acting on the 14th amendment section 3 authority to deny somebody future federal office for having engaged in seditious conduct to ongoing criminal exposure in it lana. what the court to do when her with the into his trying to steal the georgiou

option and he has tons of other potential criminal liability in both state and federal courts in washington d.c. in new york state jeff house a great to get your thoughts thanks for talking to others there are thank you jeff thank you. still ahead here on jazeera we'll have the rest of the day's news including after announcing criticism that the new admits mistakes and it's not saying distribution program. will be live on the run and nehemiah with our correspondent in neighboring thailand 7 more high profile arrests more than stings . there is deep arctic cold in the center of canada and it spread through the plains of the u.s. to the midwest there's clearly a lower point beyond which it is not quite as cold and that line of division is quite critical for the type of stuff that falls out of the sky freezing rain

some officials with the election board have also been detained at least for now this is interesting because we haven't heard that before the the military junta blames the elections or pointed to the election back in november the end of the one in a landslide as the reason for why they overtook the government they said that the election was fraudulent so interesting now that they have detained also some of the election officials from the commission in this overnight round of detentions there and scott as we heard jordan's package that the u.s. has announced it will be imposing sanctions on the military coup leaders how is not allowed to go down with the protesters on the streets. well the protesters now are just getting out to the streets across me and mark today thursday this you know has been going on since last saturday we've seen these mass mass demonstrations and this is about the time that everyone starts to gear up
