there any political leader in this room who believes that if he is ever allowed by the senate to get back into the oval office donald trump would stop inciting violence to get his way. would you bet the lives of more police officers on the. i'm not afraid of donald trump running again in 4 years i'm afraid to say run again and lose. because he can do this again. the democratic impeachment managers quoted extensively from republicans who had blamed criticized and condemned donald trump for what happened here on capitol hill on january the 6th a clear message to the republican senators no sitting in judgment impeachment is not to punish but to prevent we are not here to tarnish donald trump we are here to prevent the seeds of hatred that he planted from bearing any more fruit many of the insurrectionist the president trump incited to invade this chamber were

dangerous people on the f.b.i. watch list violent extremists white supremacists. i challenge you all to think about it if you think this is not impeachable what is . what would be. president trump's lawyers endorse his breathtaking assertion that his conduct in inciting these events was totally appropriate and the senate acquits donald trump than any president could incite and provoke insurrectionary violence against us again if you don't find this a high crime and misdemeanor today you have set a new terrible standard for presidential misconduct in the united states of america the more thomas defense team will note about less than half the time allowed to present its defense convinced it has the votes to stop the conviction of donald

trump on the charge of high crimes and misdemeanors one of donald trump's lawyers is calling the presentation by house and pitch not managers offensive and that gallagher has more from west palm beach in florida the former president's was a source. there has been some reporting that during the 1st 2 days of his 2nd impeachment trial he was glued to the television and was reportedly deeply unhappy with his lawyers performance there is other speculation that peter navarro his former economics advisor had called him and told him to fire his legal team rehire another legal team and focus on the fact what the democrats are calling the big lie what we now know is a big lie that the election was rigged so this is an uncharacteristically quiet president don't trump former president on top i should say but of course he has been muzzled from social media remember during his 1st impeachment trial he tweeted out 140 times in just one day now some of the reasoning that he was playing golf
5:06 am
today it is that perhaps some of his advisors told him look show strength show nonchalance just get out there and do what you would normally do but there's simply no way of knowing what's in the mind of the former president at the moment apart from the fact that he is quite possibly angry with the legal team that only had a few days to prepare for the 2nd impeachment trial so we are waiting for have perhaps the end of the 2nd impeachment trial where we may hear from the former president who is still holed up in his mar-a lago resort very close to me here in west palm beach. let's bring in karen greenberg here is director of the center on national security at fordham university school of law where she's in pound ridge in new york state good to see you again karen how much of the case presented by the democrats of the last few days do you think was about convincing the republicans to convict this is making sure the events it documented in history.
5:07 am
i think it's both i think it's it's at this point more about documenting it but i also think it's about speaking to a wider audience than just republicans in the senate i. wanted to speak to the country at large but i think you're right i do think it's up a lot about documenting and they and they've done it very well actually by the narrative and meant much that we haven't seen before so it's an important. it does seem pretty unlikely that enough republicans are going to vote to convict trump is it not remarkable that republicans fear trump more and his base than how they will be judged by history you know it's really it is actually quite remarkable i think that's the right word for it you know i do think things could happen tomorrow in terms of his lawyers perform as poorly as they did in the early part of

this trial but i think this is about partisan politics and and although yes that's about trying it's also really about not wanting to be pushed around by the democrats and so it's possible these are these are several things separable things although it doesn't really feel like there was a particular moment what are you expecting from trump's defense team tomorrow and does that even matter at this stage what kind of case they perform it. well. it matters because as you said you know we are creating a document here in the united states and and what they say you know will matter to the larger public if not to the senate itself i think they'll focus a little bit on as they've indicated 1st amendment issues which are absolutely not a political legally to this case at all but they will try to say you know the president has the right to that they would never he was actually under 1st amendment law the president has different responsibilities than other civil

servants. or something inflammatory inciting a riot is different than free speech so the democrats have already counted those arguments but that seems to be partly at least part of the argument that the. trump has been pretty quiet over the course of the trial and in recent weeks do you think that will change if he is acquitted you know it's interesting because you know he can't use twitter like he could before and that looks like it's going to go on into the future so i don't know and i think it's a really good question. it's hard to imagine him not wanting the limelight not wanting to him to be in public. it's hard to imagine him not wanting to say take some kind of. if he is not convicted in this trial but he does have a guy who i think at this point would be tele to just be quiet i'd be surprised if

what's really affected us at the moment is the transmissibility because the new very house where the country is going to sweep the world in all probability in the future i think the key is going to be if some think is particularly problematic with the vaccines and i think that we're going to be able to. duck and dive around that to get our vaccines tweaked and get the rolled out getting boosters but it's going to be that kind of that slow waltz with the virus and the vaccine development trying to keep up ahead of what it what what nature is throwing at us actually. one and a half 1000000 cave and 19 vaccine doses is set to be delivered to mexico in the coming week but in the south several indigenous communities are rallying against the government's inoculation efforts insisting that they won't get a shell's manual reports from mexico city. then they happen a municipality in the highlands of chiapas appears so far to have been spared the
