a return to civilian rule are getting louder for 8 straight days now tens of thousands of people have been protesting across the nation against this month's military coup they're demanding that the generals give up power and they wanted to posed civilian leader aung san suu kyi and her allies to be released but despite the growing international condemnation suchi remains under house arrest along with more than 320 people. why in the past few hours tens of thousands of people have also returned to the streets of yangon. largest city they're calling on the military to stop the kidnapping at night as the continues to detain and t.q. protesters and activists and take a look this was the scene in the capital now futile thousands of protesters there on the streets including student union members athletes and people from all walks of life and in mandalay that's me i'm all 2nd city there have been more rallies this time by lawyers people are angry with the military agenda who have seized
1:03 pm
power from their elected leaders alleging voter fraud without any evidence well scott who is monitoring things for us from across the border in bangkok scott it does seem that despite all the military's threats that the protests are growing really and in some strategic locations do you think that demonstrators are emboldened by what they heard from the u.n. human rights council yesterday. i think yes partly you know there are you know part of their focus and that has been the themes of their perceptions their rallies their marches as well as the location as you mentioned going to embassies the united nations building is to elevate international the international community attention and response to what's going on in myanmar so it's very important for them to get any type of response from the united nations like we heard the human rights council come out with the statements on friday but what came out of that is well what they were not happy with and that's part of the
1:04 pm
reason why they've been going to the chinese embassy in young gone over the last couple of days and that's china the chinese reaction to what's happening in the end more they didn't participate in the vote for the statement that came out of that special session they they they essentially a passed on the vote and then also out of that they said that this is actually an internal. issue for me and more so it shouldn't been brought to the united nations so that obviously does not sit well with the protesters but it does show that direct connection between the chinese government chinese communist party and the military leaders and scott it's been nearly 2 weeks now i believe since i'm frontin she was arrested do we know how she is anywhere from had to the protesters on the streets atoll. no there really hasn't been a word you know we've heard from the end of the that's her party the national league for democracy they have made statements about her her health and that she's ok this is pretty soon after she was detained on the february 1st. early morning
1:05 pm
they were detained so really nothing more than that then and now the occasionally saying that she's ok but we haven't heard much for several days but we do know that more people are being detained rounded up at night it was as we saw in that video it's very interesting this here how it's the net has been widened as to whom the police and the security forces are going after it's not just the top end of the leadership or any association with top leadership it's doctors who participated in the the organization of the movement and protests so they're going further afield and detaining even people who aren't directly connected to the government that the military overthrew they're talking now they're aiming now at those who are even just participating organizing the movement so so that is obviously very concerning for the people in the major cities we've seen that in yangon and they've had or scott highs are they keeping an eye on things for us in myanmar from bangkok thanks
1:06 pm
so much scott well we can now bring in a voice from yangon means 0 is the executive director of the myanmar institute for peace and security system and thank you for being with us today can you give us a sense of what you're experiencing on the ground there and the actual sentiment on the streets is it more defiance against the military or is it really about a hope for change. well yes that the protests are now and bolding day after days and now we've witnessed that all may just c.d.'s in the end mall experiencing the thousands of protest show coming to the streets however the military response to the protests was different from one city to another but largely the military is trying to avoid confrontation with the protest phase of a young goalless and 3 days ago the military even removed police from the streets so they're like it there is no potential confrontation with the protests. but on
1:07 pm
the other hand the military is a resting. the potential ringleaders and organizers of the protests at night so we are expecting that the military may continue to tolerate this cheap protests. in the near future but as some point the military but decide to crocodile in different forms but on the other hand the military feel a little more confidence to consolidate its power in naypyidaw because that is pretty much isolated from most of the protests and that if you know as family under the control of the color of authority use well as scott al correspondent was saying that the didn't divest the t. of the crowds that we've been seeing has been really striking even paints joining and do you think that the tide is turning now we approaching that potential tipping
1:08 pm
point then for the military. i don't think at this point the military may make a move because of the protests military may see the current protests it's mostly nonviolent and also not directly threatening to unseat the military and the a lot of the ministries are still functional. so the protests are calling for civil disobedience to stop walking but on the other hand if need be door it is a bit different a difficult to engage in that kind of protests because it is quite isolated and this is the area but he much. away from most of the populated areas so it's easier more easier to control the civil servants but despite the civil. disobedience movement some of the ministries are functional and so the
1:09 pm
military may see that kind of protests and not necessarily directly threatening its power base so they may tolerate for at least for the near future you spoke about a potential crackdown by the military in a different way and where are they obviously seeing quite a lot of arrests as someone yourself has been involved in the peace process in manama given what's happening at the moment do you fear for your own safety i'm sorry i didn't hear your last book i was wondering if you fear for your own safety as we see these arrests escalates around the country. well you know a lot of us. who were involved in the pro-democracy movement in the past are on like a high a lot like you know we we activate our safety protocols and we don't even sleep in one place we lose one after another and a lot of activists even though they are not arrested are concerned that may be targeted next so yes we all are concerned more or less well as we've also been
1:10 pm
saying on censorship of this he remains in detention the international community is has a bit of a complicated feel of her i think after she refused to denounce the crackdown on the ranger back in 2017 but still she is a democratically elected leader can you give us a sense of how she's viewed within. where she is still a popular leader a lot of people felt she was unjustly detain and a lot of people are quite supportive of our military detention of don't so suit yourself. that the sentiment against a military among the population so i would say that she has remained popular a.b.n. more but she may be seen differently among some of the political analysts just coming back to the crackdown that we've been seeing the generals have been
1:11 pm
restricting the internet and communication channels out of manama einstein that's also reportedly being done with chinese technology we've seen protests outside the chinese embassy how do people there feel about beijing. well the even though the there are some rumors about those technologies a lot of young people. being able to. second then those the technology that restrictions they were able to. get onto traitor or face rhodes on the social media was and they were using myself a cicada technologies as well so i was with some of the faults they have for google you know they can mourn it to all the protests and media. like and we'll. the a tiny and even they know which protest group is coming to which direction and what color dress the a wearing a so it's not the i was a question to cicada
1:12 pm
a young people use the technologies against the military who missed him in the 4 i let you go i want to ask you about your own personal experience you left me and i was south during at period of intense repression and you chose to return to your country to get involved in this movement how do you feel right now as you watch all of this take place. well it was a completely 2 different struggle even though old a morris but he much the the same even bill like yeah we were fighting the military who were military hunter back in like in 1988. we didn't have. much time that if you know i remember myself you know i saw the military crackdown. that meds he shot at the protester on the august 1988 the next year i was. the 1st one who threw the cocktail at the troops so
1:13 pm
now the situation is quite changed and people have become more sophisticated and people feel like they can protest in many different forms built just like these protests very much like and nonviolent content you experienced in the past and also at the audience also trying to avoid confrontation with the protests are still one last question and when do you think these protests will actually stop if there isn't going to be confrontation with the military could these just continue indefinitely or will we put well there any stop when we see a political change. well i think the military government me ignore the current. law lest until they probably find some evidence that they can claim that legitimize why they have to last a coup so now what i hope is a lot of investigations are going on against that and there will be one on that
1:14 pm
potential voting irregularities and also foreign funding and also some of the corruption charges told the military may come up with those whatever finding the have that they may come up with a transition a plan. and in the meantime even though the protests mostly mostly a nonviolent means some area we start seeing some potential confrontation simply say using some life rounds and water cannons so that does the confrontation maybe and a viable in the future or in some degree will continue watching the situation very closely indeed here on out of there that the executive director of the myanmar institute for peace and security and young on thanks so much for being with us. has plenty more had for you this news hour including find out why protesters in nigeria's largest city of lagos have returned to the site of last year's protests.

and it's a battle of the ages behind rio de janeiro's new full image a huge elderly population struggling to survive this pandemic. in sports as cricket fans return to india they are treated to a special performance in the 2nd test against england the best of all action coming up shortly with the same. now former u.s. president donald trump could learn his fate as early as this weekend his 2nd impeachment trial is set to wrap up in the coming hours lawyers for trump have been pushing back at the evidence presented so far today describing the trial itself as unconstitutional they say democrats are in the seeking revenge alan fischer reports the talk team too could remarkably short time to wrap up its defense just under 4 hours it argued that the proceedings were unconstitutional were rushed and were
1:16 pm
driven by a hatred of donald trump this impeachment is completely divorced from the facts the evidence and the interests of the american people the senate should promptly and decisively vote to reject it for for promoting insurrection against the united states the president's remarks explicitly encourage those in attendance to exercise their rights peacefully and patriotically if you don't fight like hell you're not going to have a country anymore. this is ordinary political rhetoric you have to get your people to fight and if they don't fight we have to primaries the hell out of the ones that don't fight hatred is at the heart of the house managers frivolous attempts to blame donald trump for the criminal acts of the rioters based on double here stay for hearsay statements of fringe right wing
1:17 pm
groups based on no real evidence other than rank speculation hatred is a dangerous thing they have not and can not prove mr trump explicitly or implicitly encourage use of violence or lawless action when to walk down to the capitol the and we're going to cheer on our brave senators and congressmen and women make no mistake and i will repeat it now and any time i'm ever asked january 6th was a terrible day for our country the attack on this building shocked us all president trump did not incite or caused the horrific violence that occurred on january 6th 2021 the senate then moved to a question and answer session it was combative it was fractious and it allowed both
1:18 pm
sides to repeat the well worn lines this is an article of impeachment for incitement this is not an article of impeachment for anything else so one count they could have charged anything they wanted this process is so on constitutional because it violates due process i'm going to get into the jurisdiction part. the due process part should be enough to give anybody who loves our constitution and loves our country great pause to do anything but acquit. donald trump at no point was the president informed the vice president was in any danger because the house rushed through this impeachment in 7 days we don't come here in and are contrary to what you've heard today we come here in the spirit of protecting our republic and that's what it's all about. there
1:19 pm
was a moment of unity at the end of the day when both sides agreed to present the congressional gold medal to capitol hill the officer who led the writers away from the senate chamber eugene goodman actions probably saved lives that day the senate will meet on saturday there is the possibility they could call witnesses but really we're looking at moving towards a vote on the acquittal of donald trump but let's talk you through what happens next in the senate is set to reconvene now for the 5th day of trying to 2nd impeachment trial and fast and all votes on whether or not to subpoena witnesses or documents but u.s. media are reporting that both sides are likely to move straight to the next phase then we'll have the closing arguments house impeachment managers and trying to defense lawyers will each get 2 hours to wrap up their cases and then there will be a final vote it could happen as early as saturday a 2 thirds majority of the evenly split senate is required for conviction well richard is a professor of american politics at the university of tennessee he doesn't think
1:20 pm
the trial so far has changed many lines. well it's hard to imagine the beginning of the trial that a conviction was going to come out i think the democrats did in fact of jobbers of showing some footage that people hadn't seen before but in this footage will turn context i think the republicans the defenders of donald trump the attorneys did a pretty poor job the 1st day but they managed to recoup a little today because of the sort of more aggressive tack that the attorneys took today that to they took a few liberties with the truth and so the democrats may want to sort of re you know back when a citizen bring in witnesses for the 1st time and have those individuals testify that what the attorneys were saying was not true for one you know that impeachment is a pretty political weapon and the public's you know split you know in the united states maybe 60 percent support conviction and 40 percent don't but i think the
1:21 pm
point is 2 to one is that donald trump am forbidden from running for public office again and number 2 is that you send a message to future presidents that this kind of behavior on the the partisan divide is very bad in this country but i think that you're seeing with 10 republicans in the house and maybe 7 or 6 or 7 republicans cross in the senate with about 140000 people in the last few days renouncing their membership in the republican party we're may actually be seeing a little bit of sort of some move back towards maybe a little bit more towards the middle. and moving on and police in nigeria are detaining protesters in their largest city lagos that's after activists called for a rally at the very spot where 12 people were killed last year during protests supporters of the n. cells movement against police violence are angry at
1:22 pm
a decision by a judicial panel to reopen the leckie toll gate it's been closed since those killings 6 many say reopening the toll gate is ill timed and also inconsiderate to the victims well our correspondent made it just cover those protests extensively for us and joins us now live from lagos ahmed you were there during the unrest in october can you talk us through the significance of where you're standing right now . just checking when you can hear me we have been having some communications problems . will be trying to get that address back and bring you new more on that story from nigeria shortly moving on now and at least 4 people have been killed and 7 others injured in an attack near somalia's presidential palace in the capital mogadishu. police say a vehicle rigged with explosives managed to get away from
1:23 pm
a checkpoint at high speed despite security forces opening fire the driver managed to reach of police post and to detonate those explosives no one has it came for sponsibility for the attack. 30 taliban fighters including 6 foreign nationals have been killed at an explosion in a mosque in afghanistan it happened early on saturday in bulk province a statement from the defense ministry says members of the armed group had gathered there for bomb making training the taliban has not yet commented now a former european central bank boss will shortly be sworn in as if he is prime minister mario druggies cabinet is a mix of technocrats and politicians from his broad coalition party wrangling brought down the previous administration in the midst of the pandemic and economic freefall. well still ahead here on out of there will be reporting from pakistan on why there's a shortage of sugar despite the nation being one of the largest producers of it in

hello again i'm a saucy attained let's remind you of our top stories this hour and protesters are taking their anger to the streets of myanmar for an 8th day they want military generals to release deposed leader aung san suu kyi who is under arrest. donald trump's 2nd impeachment trial is nearly finished with a final vote in the senate expected as early as this weekend lawyers for the former president wrapped up their defense calling the trial unconstitutional. and police in nigeria are detaining protesters in the largest city lagos months after activists called for a rally at the very spot where 12 people were killed last year during protests. we can now go back to on that address who covered those protests last year extensively
1:28 pm
for us he joins us from lagos and as we were saying earlier you were there during that unrest in october can you talk us through the significance of where you are standing now. for many of the protesters and for just organizers recycler to go so now trying to understand why the lake just picked up and want to really put the tollgate they look just to govern just looking at it from the revenue point of view they're losing millions of dollars every week because of one collection of tools for the protests just made clear that these are the leaks that this is where trough members of the and movement were killed by security forces something that the security forces have continued to deny what does more vaccine for the protesters was that a commission of inquiry was set up by the lagos state government and other states to investigate events of change of talked about. before and after when right go broke out throughout nigeria that commission of inquiry did not submit its support
1:29 pm
us not finished its assignment and the protest as a protest organizers were wondering why they hurried to open the gate when investigations up not come to bed and so that is why they pulled out for practice today eventually the police officers or the security agents why don't you and they were not taken unawares like the last time the portis was taking going across make us and told not to. put him on the protesters and they deployed in mosques hundreds of police officers on the streets with guns buttons and shields trying to ensure that no protest oh no gathering of more than 2 people was recorded to us people were trying to cross the site you'll be asked and find out why and what does your business if you can't give up what makes a nation that dumped you into a bun and then take you to what a moment a police station and lock you up so put them for the protest us this is such a great go they want a moment especially one of the persons we interviewed earlier was arrested this
1:30 pm
morning inside the bus he told al did you know that they want a moment to be erected here in honor of victims off to what 22020 they don't want the tollgate to be here until it goes to the government insisted that revenue or money is being lost money that could be channeled for development purposes in that district that's under given that there were $30.00 is out already out in force and clearly taking action today do you think that's likely to deter on the protesters from coming out. what it looks like it's walking for now the participants counted in most parts of lagos state a rest up in bed and there's been no gathering the way we saw them in october 28th . and thousands of protesters gathered on this 15 lane grew rocky highway to a new system that they're not going into i just put it to you but even if you top post. the government shifted to allow people to go home and that was when security

difficult the city's aging population needs younger caregivers who usually live in poor neighborhoods and they have to take a crowded bus to work all the attempts at maintaining at most social distancing possible still very difficult so what happened i think during the 1st big wave was that lots of elderly people were got sick got sick fast because one of their caregivers got here. and. there is. this problem still exist copacabana is a rich middle class dave or hood with the high cove the death rate 3 out of 10 people here are over 60 but in the nearby slum up on the mountain the younger population faces a different problem they would probably survive the virus but will struggle to survive another lockdown. this time of the year this beach would be packed with

acute malnutrition this year out of them 400000 likely to suffer severe acute malnutrition and that means they'll die if they don't receive treatment and nourishment now compared to last year more children and yemen are suffering from fatal periods of hunger while the humanitarian response remains critically underfunded well for more on this let's now cross over to cairo and speak to be a tape from the world food program a b it's been what nearly 3 years since the u.n. described yemen as the world's worst humanitarian crisis i feel like this is a story we just keep repeating each time we do the situation seems to only gotten worse. one of the situation has not improved the situation can be described now as dire economic volatility conflicts have stretched the ability of yemeni yemenis to breaking point leaving millions deeply in what we're going to get and families at risk of famine the latest report that we got that yesterday from 4 new
