plaguing the community was a key problem. and led the way in transforming into difficulty into a success barring a woman to meet. women make change on al-jazeera. this is al-jazeera. when you're watching the al-jazeera news our headquarters here in doha coming up in the next 60 minutes not guilty former u.s. president donald trump is acquitted of inside to get insurrection and the republican senators back to the accused of a dishonorable act. today but the cowardly.

they have no option because they were afraid. praises the verdicts calling the trial the biggest witch hunt in the country's history and hints at a possible political future. also a bolo resurfaces in west africa health workers say at least we people have died in guinea and declare it an epidemic. and dozens of people killed in fighting in the rebels trying to capture the government's last northern stronghold. and the supporters defending champion novak djokovic makes it through to the quarterfinals of this train open. welcome to the news hour former u.s. president donald trump has been acquitted in an impeachment trial for a 2nd time the senate found him not guilty of inciting an insurrection the verdict was expected but 7 republicans sided with democrats trump who was accused of
6:02 pm
encouraging his supporters to storm the capitol hill on january the 6th while senators were certifying joe biden's election when alan fischer reports now from washington d.c. . the a's are 57 days for e's 3 for a 2nd time donald trump acquitted of high crimes and misdemeanors by the u.s. senate john trunk former president. is not guilty is charged the charge he incited the crowd ahead of the violent riot at the capitol on january the 6th. 57 senators said he did including 7 republicans but that's not enough for the 2 thirds majority to convict this was about choosing country over donald trump and 43 republican members chose trump they chose trump it should be a weight on their conscience today the day started with
6:03 pm
a surprise the democrats asking for witnesses a move which could delay the process we would like the opportunity to subpoena congresswoman herrera regarding her communications with house minority leader kevin mccarthy and to subpoena her contemporaneous notes that she made regarding what president trump told kevin mccarthy in the middle of the insurrection if they want to have witnesses i'm going to need at least over 100 depositions not just one both sides though wanted to bring this to a quick end so reached agreement which meant new witnesses and a move to closing statements from the man who led the prosecution an appeal to senators to meet the moment senators this trial in the final analysis is not about donald trump the country in the world know who donald trump is this trial is about who we are who we are this is almost certainly how you will be
6:04 pm
remembered by history that might not be fair. he really buy not be fair but none of us can escape the demands of history and destiny right now trump's team so often echoed the ex president supports this impeachment has been a complete charade from beginning to and the entire specter bill expect the call has been nothing but the unhinged pursuit of a long standing political vendetta against mr trump by the opposition party it is time to bring this concept unconstitutional political theater to an end it is time to allow our nation to move forward with the result in donald trump made his 1st comment since the trial began a statement from his florida home thanking senators for their vote but insisting this is yet another phase in the greatest witch hunt in the history of our country
6:05 pm
no president has gone through anything like it but one of his closest allies in the senate who voted to acquit him made it clear the former president was responsible for what happened president troubles for everything he did while he was out of as an ordinary sort of a less structured levitation to iran. or every day. while it went off and got away with anything yet. the decision here means that donald trump will not be excluded for running from political office in the future he could run again for the presidency in 2024 his supporters say he should and he would when but despite the not guilty plea january the 6th will always be attached to donald trump's presidency on the day when democracy was threatened in america alan fischer al jazeera on capitol hill. house speaker nancy pelosi didn't hold back when referring to the 43 republican senators who backed trump calling their refusal to
6:06 pm
convict him the most dishonorable act in the country's history. but what we saw in that senate today was the cowardly group of republicans who patently have no option because they were afraid to defend their job respect the institution in which they served and the gallery is standing by for us in the west palm beach of florida were told trump and now resides but 1st let's cross over to washington d.c. where heidi castro is waiting for me as well heidi i mean let's just begin with the mixed messages from mitch mcconnell and what the fallout of this now could be through him mr trump and the republicans. sure so hale so mcconnell well as the saying goes when you try to please everyone you please no one and certainly his vote yesterday to acquit trump but then followed by that whiplash
6:07 pm
speech on the senate floor in which he in stark terms said that trump was responsible both practically and morally for the riot on capitol hill well certainly those are not words that the former president will appreciate and as far as the democrats you just heard house speaker nancy pelosi she called mcconnell disingenuous pointing out the hypocrisy of him delaying the start of the trial until trump has left office while then using the fact in his mind that you can't try a former president as his. as his excuse to vote for this acquittal so as a as far as the wider republican party is really the question is whether these 7 votes from republican senators to convict trump whether those are the beginning steps of the party moving past or whether they are the last gasp of a party that will never be the same again i suppose so they really as well heidi as
6:08 pm
the day you sort of see the political toll on so many really to react to what happened in the senate over annoying to me we wait with bated breath we to hear from various voices from across the political spectrum. yes and particularly of course from those 7 republican senators who broke ranks to vote to convict trump and they include senator bill county of louisiana who was on a.b.c. this morning he thinks that trump is a waning forests and he justified his vote to convict saying that the republican party is more than just about one person that it is a party of ideas but contrast that to the statements of lindsey graham another republican who was interviewed on fox this morning and he has the very opposite interpretation of what happens he said trump is here to stay and that those republicans who voted against trump to convict trump will be replaced in graham's
6:09 pm
estimation by approach from more right wing factions of the party and he pointed out a an example bill burr of north carolina who is reese retiring he voted to convict trump and lindsey graham says that he will eventually be put replaced by trump's daughter in law laura trump who we've heard rumblings of considering a former a into the senate candidate so certainly you're seeing these 2 door visions of where the republican party is headed played out on television here in the u.s. on the sunday talk shows and that we talked about well into the future of show why did you come straight forward in washington d.c. let's cross over to a colleague got to go he said west palm beach in florida for the president talking about a witch hunt to be vindicated at the movement has just begun but what does what he's going to say on sunday morning.
6:10 pm
probably nothing to be honest this is the quietest the former president has been for probably the last few decades the of course is now of twitter but there may be a very good reason why he is remaining so quiet and it speaks to those words that mitch mcconnell made after his 2nd impeachment trial in which he was acquitted donald trump is facing serious legal jeopardy that's maybe why we haven't heard from the man himself and not likely to for several days or weeks even remember he couldn't just get prosecuted by around what happened on january the 6 are also criminal investigations going on into his businesses in new york there is now a no criminal investigation into that phone call between trump and a broad raffensperger the republican secretary of state in the u.s. state of georgia a state that trump lost despite that trump made a phone call to him saying buying me the vote so there is serious legal jeopardy on
6:11 pm
donald trump and speaking to the wider picture of the future here there are people within the republican party saying they're now fighting for the soul of the party and trump is very much at the heart of that some people saying look up to january the 6th trump will be for ever tied to those events of people storming the capitol building holding is flags saying we're doing this for donald trump and that could be a real problem for him going forward now lindsey graham who he was just talking about saying trump is still very much at the center of the party he's trying to talk to drum about how the party goes forward with him any but there are those within the republican party that would rather put trump azim behind them but the real question here is what is the republican party now is it the party of marjorie taylor green the representative from georgia who's a cuban on conspiracist who chases teenagers that survive school shootings down the street or is it the party of someone like liz cheney who's far more moderate who did vote. that donald trump was guilty this is essentially
6:12 pm
a fight for the future of the republican party that very much at the heart of it very much casting a long shadow over it is the former president dollar j. truck and he thanks very much on the force there in west palm beach let's expand this now with eric our political analyst joins me now from washington d.c. via scott good talking with us again on the program i mean there are 2 political sides of this argument and judgment so let's just start with the republicans we'll get to the democrats in a moment and where this now leaves the debate about the directions even and he mentioned about how they proceed and who leads them based on those confusing comments and actions by the senate but minority leader mitch mcconnell when he also said let me refer to the package that we just saw as well from alan fischer there is no question the president trump is practically a morally responsible provoke thought provoking the events of the day the people who stormed this building believe they were acting on the wishes and instructions of the president he says one thing and does another. yeah that's right he did and i
6:13 pm
think what we're seeing from the minority leader is he's trying to not only have it both ways but he's also looking ahead he recognizes his party is in the minority he wants to get back to the majority but he recognizes he's got to keep donald trump's base in the fall but he also recognizes he's got to bring those corporate donors back to the fold as well remember after this insurrection a number of fortune 500 in blue chip companies decided that they will no longer fun either the republican party or members of congress who voted to not who elected not to ratify the election and so that is going to make it very difficult for senators to be able to raise that money they need to be able to compete and elections we're talking some races that can run anywhere from $50.00 to $100000000.00 if you good if you look at the runoff in georgia that race was over $500000000.00 in those 2 senate runoff races so mitch mcconnell recognizes i need
6:14 pm
the votes but i also need money and so he's trying to thread the needle and speak to both audience and the thought is the wider picture erick that of course the smaller picture is what donald trump is thinking right now because mitch mcconnell also did say and i'm quoting here that trump was now a private citizen and he possibly suggested that he could face criminal prosecution for his acts by saying he didn't get away with it or he'd get away with anything yet so surely he's looking for all suggesting that that could possibly be a civil prosecution that could be pending that's problematic in itself. oh it is in fact we do know that yesterday's was the opening salvo of the many legal recriminations that face the former president in the wake of this insurrection his exposure criminally and civilly have only grown we do know that the fulton county district attorney is looking into has opened
6:15 pm
a criminal investigation into the president as well as the secretary of state in georgia and in addition we know that the attorney general here in washington d.c. also has a criminal investigation looking at the insurrection that took place at the u.s. capitol so clearly we see a former president who has legal exposure on a number of different fronts and all of this is going to play out in that in the coming days weeks months even years ahead ok so you had 7 republican senators we had custody cullins mitt romney. and a couple of others who voted to convict the wrath of those that voted for them in their respective states is that going to be a wrath or is there going to be a wrath from within the republican party because at the end of the day there are house and senate elections and 2020 to 2023 of the the photo will speak about what they think has happened and who they believe in who they want to follow. well
6:16 pm
you're right but i think we have to look at each of the members of the senate republicans who voted we have to look at the individual and look at what role they play in their respective states so for example senator lisa murkowski she has always been someone who has had an independent streak in fact in the last election that she won she won it as a write in candidate so she is not worried about recriminations or pushback or blowback from the state regarding her election prospects in addition to that mitt romney is also someone who has a deep well. of independents and terms of his ability to make decisions in addition to that we know the state of utah has not always been one that was overwhelmingly popular or and thronged with the former president as well so i doubt there will be much concerns about his possibilities of who is in that an election since susan collins actually just won a reelection in 2020 so she's got 6 years before she's up again and then we know
6:17 pm
that senator bill burr is retiring so there is no pushback on him because he won't be there sure so i think when you take all of that into account i think many of these members are pretty insulated and also of course senator portman. senator paul foreman from pennsylvania that's a state that joe biden won so that that's a democratic state and of course that might actually embolden him to his voters let's just get that again because the running outside they want to get to the democrats they all fuming but they knew they wouldn't get the votes so what eventually got out of this. well i think what we saw here is. more of a testament to where the republican party stands and you mentioned marjorie taylor earlier and i think we're already seeing that democrats are going to make her the face of the party continue to make donald trump the face of the party and i think
6:18 pm
what you're going to see with that is a continued effort to try to alienate many of those suburban voters that republicans desperately need in order to win but right now what we see is they're moving away from republicans and into the democratic camp fascinating turn of events in the u.s. always good to have you on the program thanks feel time and your insights thank you . well plenty more ahead here on the news hour including. 10 years on we look back at the only gulf country to see an uprising during the 2011 arab spring. but in small things they go very wrong for one your to the america's cup challenger save his final. get his health chief has declared a bolan epidemic after confirming 7 cases in the country and it's the 1st

resurgence of the virus in guinea had 5 years 3 people have died between 20132016 at least 11000 people died during a battle epidemic in west africa mainly affecting getting out its neighbors liberia and sierra leone. good to see. you at home while our one of our citizens became ill and unfortunately died his burial took place on february 1st and a few days later some people who took part in the funeral began to experience diarrhea vomiting bleeding and fever the 1st samples were confirmed on february 12th. liberia meanwhile is stepping up its efforts to prevent the virus from crossing the border the deaths in guinea were reported in a town close to liberia and the country was declared free from a bowl in 2015 no cases have been detected since let's cross over to nicholas coups in dhaka unsettles capital dhaka nic we just heard there from health authorities in
6:20 pm
getting i mean what is the latest now. well what seems to have happened is that the health authorities following this confirmation following these p.c.r. test that were done on 3 samples of people that were seemingly infected with now confirmed to have a ball while the health authorities have sent around 30 investigators health workers to the area of korea it's a race against time to try to trace those who have been in touch or in contact with patient 0 and we're talking about patients here is this young nurse who was having symptoms of vomiting and diarrhea and fever she went to a health center and there that happened on the 27th of january a week later she was. she died and then she was buried in it during that funeral during the burial that's when 8 other people were infected with the virus and that comes as no surprise because during the last outbreak. the scientists and
6:21 pm
researchers from the c.d.c. said that 60 percent of the infections came from funerals burials that's when people get together congregate they wash their hands in a common basin and washing also the body and that's when we see super spreaders and the rate of infection. going really high and that's why health authorities are so concerned because there are cases both in a and then 200 kilometers away and who do to places that are cool to the border with the librarian as you mentioned prompting the liberian authorities to be on higher alert because they don't want to see a repeat of what we've seen in 2013 in 2016 where almost 11000 people died 30000 people were infected it is in countries where health systems are already strained that we saw the most spread of this buller virus and of course this is coming during a global pandemic making it even more difficult for health authorities to try to
6:22 pm
clamp down. with this new ball that outbreak there are vaccine half a 1000000 vaccine available but none of them in west africa and so that's going to be the next step for the guinea and authorities who are already press towards the w.h.o. to try to get that was vaccines on the ground to try to vaccinate people and especially their health workers there will be on the front line to deal with this outbreak so for the update thanks very much nic forests in dhaka. boom is the regional representative for the epicenter africa research branch of doctors without borders and he says it's not clear how the outbreak is getting started it's important to highlight that the same cause will produce the same effect we know all that in those forests in 0 korea around there you have those most likely the past work carrying those viruses so we never will have contact between the human and the animal is very our break we don't know yet how it happened whenever it will be
6:23 pm
contact there will be a transfer between the any moles and you might be so that might explain why we have that resistance of the our what is happening here see we are trying to figure out if there is a link between the latest outbreak in with temple because the lady the 1st one we had was a kid was the wife of survival and we also know that the virus can stay for a long period of time doesn't mean it's so easy and the reason why it's happening we don't know yet but we have something that we'll be able to all figure out the full case of has been converted north kivu province of the democratic republic of congo now the new outbreak was announced a week ago the world health organization says as many as 180 people might have been exposed to the virus health workers are now racing to vaccinate people to prevent a bigger outbreak. rebels have attacked security forces in the democratic
