if. because if. you have. facebook a 1000000 miles military for its use of deadly force against protesters. this is out 0 life and also coming china's president declares victory in a right occasion publicly although it's criteria for that claim of being question.
11:01 am
a lifesaving delivery we talked to doctors in senegal about the challenges of getting coronavirus fact seems to its most remote villages. ecuador's police release dramatic video from inside prisons where they're struggling to bring gang rights under control. so that facebook says it has banned me and most military from using its platforms social media giant says it is a necessary response to the military coup and the violent crackdown on protesters there is a heavy police presence in gang gone by so much as if you know arrested at least 3 protesters have been killed in weeks of rallies denouncing the coup and demanding the release of elected leader aung san suu kyi so let's speak to our correspondent who joins us from bangkok across the border in thailand so what pressure will
11:02 am
facebook's actions you think have on the military. well nic it will be some pressure because so many people in myanmar get information news from facebook this is part of the reason part of the reason for this is because it was a closed off nation for decades and then once the internet connections and data lines were introduced social media became a platform for news for a lot of people in myanmar so there's a heavy reliance on facebook and other platforms so in that respect it will be a hit to our military for them trying to get out information that they want to now it's interesting a couple weeks back 2 weeks back just a just 7 days after the coup took place facebook took some action against the military even back then not the full on ban that we're seeing today on thursday but back then they limited the amount of information that could be seen put out by the
11:03 am
meum our military and its entities so they this is i guess you could look at it as a 2nd step so they're citing again misinformation which they did the 1st time that 1st step but then also now they're saying because of human rights violations that they are taking they're banning all sites for the military itself and then any entity that's directly connected to it so a further step nic and we're seeing the demonstrations and protests continuing and seeing supporters of the military out on the streets. yeah a group of about a 1000 in downtown yangon marched supporting the military supporting the coup supporting the the transition that the military said that they had to make about a 1000 marchers we saw some. protesters on the fringes of that march no direct clashes right then and there for the most part but there were some clashes between the 2 sides later on down the day and down the line after this march took place so it's kind of the 1st time we've seen a kind of a pattern
11:04 am
a sustained pattern of scuffles if you will really never really evolved into much more than that there are some still photos are coming out disturbing concerning i should say of some of the pro military supporters with sharp objects and not there's no report of any large scale injuries or anything but obviously that's something concerning because it's something that we haven't seen nick in these more than 3 weeks of protests what's also interesting is something that happened in yangon as well some there are reports that some students wanted to leave the university to join the protests like they have so many days before and it sounds as though police locked a gate for them to get outside but that it sounds like they just carried on with their protests on the university grounds so that something again that we really haven't seen before but overall the protests have been peaceful and are continuing like we've seen so many days before right across many more mandalay the 2nd largest city and in yangon and down in the south as well nic or it's got plenty of let's go

to the bangkok. georgia's president has declared a complete victory in his government's campaign to stamp out poverty she paying made the announcement at a ceremony marking the country's accomplishment as a goal beijing aim to achieve this year. according to the current chris you're all 99000000 of the poor rural population thrown out of poverty and 832 poverty stricken counties and 128000 villages in remote from poverty list their reason about poverty has been addressed and task of eradicating extreme poverty has people killed we have created another miracle that will go down in history well katrina year in beijing says the may not be quite the miracle that she's been paying claims she jinping made poverty alleviation a key focus of his leadership since coming to power in 2012 and the government has been slowly working on that for the past few decades but it was really galvanized
11:06 am
when she jinping became president and since 2012 a really poor billions of dollars of resources into this millions of officials were sent into the countryside they were told to go. door to door knocking on households and asking them for their income details and then billions was poured into building schools and factories and much needed birds in these rural areas but we do have to take this with a grain of salt 1st of all we have to look at china's benchmark for poverty and that's $2.30 a day an income of $2.30 which is slightly below what the world bank recommends for high income countries other criticisms also of that somehow fallen through the cracks this is not an absolute eradication many people have been unable for example to adapt to new positions of work they've been given others have complained of forced relocations from their rule homes into apartment blocks and also many analysts that we've spoken to have questioned the sustainability of the initiative because many of the industries that have been newly founded in these villages and

towns are currently being propped up by government financial support. china has criticized the united states for sending a warship through the taiwan strait saying it undermines peace and stability in the region the u s s curtis wilbur passed through on wednesday and what the u.s. navy described as a routine taiwan strait transit china says it strongly opposes the move. trials of johnson and johnson's one shot covert $1000.00 vaccine have shown it is highly effective against severe cases the product is also proving effective against new a variance unlike the finds of biotech and medina vaccines that need to be stored at very low temperatures this one can be kept in the standard fridge it's yet to be approved for use or biotech firm and says that u.s. regulators are testing its new covert $1000.00 vaccine against a variant prevalent in south africa at the strain is considered one of the more contagious because it evades some of the blocking action of antibodies and that
11:08 am
means it has reduced the efficacy of the current lineup of vaccines which is considering using it as a booster or combining it with its original shot. senegal says it does not have the capacity to store all types of covert 19 vaccines a lack of cold storage facilities guaranteeing the low temperatures needed to store certain vaccines is a major stumbling block to immunization efforts in many developing countries it was hack reports now from senegal's region. 7. i don't know it's common sense shouts street comedian son of go everyone should get vaccinated your mother your cows the chickens even your ugly neighbor he says this is more than a comedy show for son of he developed a disability from polio because he never got the polio vaccine as a child a source of mockery he turned into humor to remind the public the small pain that

comes with a vaccine injection can save them a lifetime of suffering living in the best room with it's going to. it's a medicine for the soul but for other ailments like deadly viruses and diseases better get vaccinated there are plenty available well at least most of the time. but getting vaccines to senegal's most remote villages is no picnic in the park explains nurse john it's more about reaching people quickly in his cooler or lifesaving vaccines that need to be kept at freezing temperatures in a hot and tropical region. if they're not well preserved at the right temperature than the vaccines turned into poison we will destroy these precious doses that are meant to protect our children against diseases and kobolds health center mothers with their babies have been waiting for a nurse jones arrival since dawn the vaccines are to immunize the children against tuberculosis an infectious disease that kills
11:10 am
a staggering 1400000 people every year. and through campaigns like this that senegal has successfully in realized most of the children in the country people want to get vaccinated the turnaround is to get those very. health centers like this one. frequent power shortages make storing doses in health centers challenging in the capital deckard new cold storage facilities are being built for the new coated 1000 vaccines some of them will need to be kept at minus 70 degree celsius. given our inability to stop vaccines and the quantity that we have we will have to prioritize who gets it that means that not everyone can get vaccinated some rich countries ordered 3 even 4 times the cove in 1000 vaccines they need senegal like many other west african countries will receive barely enough doses to protect its health workers comedian sonic oh this is no laughing matter
11:11 am
but a source of shame with a lack of cold storage facilities many in remote areas who need to be inoculated may not receive any vaccines at all nicholas hawk. senegal bug area is offering covert 900 vaccines to people of all ages. by priority groups fewer than a 3rd of the 1st in line have been vaccinated since december started giving astra zeneca shots to people as young as 20 on friday. mainly due to concerns about side effects and distrust and its cover. we school just don't know we've been pleading for people to come and get vaccinated the situation is totally different now i would say we're overwhelmed because everything is under control but it seems a busy to the maximum and we're not turning anyone away not a single person so far. what chile is leading latin america with its vaccination

pressure in charge of this general looking fine and dry a nice little ridge of high pressure spinning in from the atlantic that will quieten things down nicely over the british isles gradually pushing across france into germany go through the next couple of days but this week weather front will be to some outbreaks of rain is the southeast of england northern parts of france down across the low countries still very warm in germany 20 celsius 18 there for warsaw and much milder in moscow temperatures getting above freezing over the next couple days just a few days ago we were struggling to get highs of minus 16 celsius so that is a big improvement even though we do have some snow moving through over the next day or so. increasingly patchy rain then spills its way across germany into poland some base and places of rain is essential parts of france but there's a ridge of high pressure just quoting things down nicely across the northwest of here increasing temperatures mean an increased avalanche risk around the pyrenees and the alps from all the possible africa which is generally fine and dry but we

11:15 am
but again you're watching al-jazeera a reminder of our top stories this hour facebook says it's banned mid-month military from using its platforms the social media giant says it is a necessary response to this month's coup and the violent crackdown on protestors. chinese president xi jinping says the country has created a miracle by eradicating poverty nationwide he said almost 100000000 people in rural areas had been helped by the campaign. trials of johnson johnson's one short covert $1000.00 bags didn't have shown its highly effective against severe cases the product is also previous effective against new a variance that's yet to be approved for use. but more now on china's declaration on ending poverty let's speak to bert hoffman who's the director of the east asian institute at the national university of singapore and joins us by skype from singapore but hopefully welcome to the program no question that china has lifted millions hundreds of millions out of poverty but has it been completely eliminated
11:16 am
well if you look at china's own poverty line that is true so day eliminated basically extreme poverty china's poverty line is a $2.30 which is higher in the world bank's international line for extreme poverty and so you could say that extreme poverty has been out of minutes at this point in china and there's a minute already it's common if you look at somewhat higher level of party lines there are still quite a few poor people in china right even at the line that they said there's still 200000000 people on that line out. they're close to death line so below the line now of the $2.30 you get assistance you get welfare assistance or you get out or help from the government so if you want then they get you over the poverty line but if you look at china's current level of income per capita that
11:17 am
which is around $10000.00 normally you would expect a much higher party line and that's probably a line in china well except in the world bank if you look at sort of comparable countries you would expect the poverty line to be about $5.00 per capita if it's $5.00 but that china would have more than $200000000.00 people that are still below it at $5.00 per capita so and reich was considered to be a poor understood nevertheless it is impressive i guess the question is out of the day can it keep it up well how do they do it. she jumping spoke especially over the last 10 years and no it's been in the very intense campaign to get people out of poverty to get them all the help they can to target really well they had a very big database of everybody who is poor and and the reason for the individuals being poor and then they try to give individual help but of course that was the last 100000000 china and lifted more than 800000000 peoples up since 1978
11:18 am
and a lot of that simply came from economic growth of course government policies reforms more market oriented patient opening up to the outside world was all part of that which caused the high growth rates and it enabled people to get better jobs to get higher paying jobs to move to cities and go from agriculture into into manufacturing and into services so a lot of people listed themselves out of poverty because the environment had great the improved. paying keen to take the credit as you might expect for what you're saying is not all down to him. it's not all about to him i mean government of course played a role in all throughout the reform era but a lot depends on the initiative and the hard work of for individual chinese people as well all right professor appreciate that professor brad often giving us his expertise there on the situation in china thanks. at least 3 people have
