4:02 pm
amounts to a coup attempts and has been addressing thousands of his supporters to gather in the capital year avan he's told them his political future should be decided by the people not the military bernard smith begins our coverage. on the streets of yerevan on thursday i mean as prime minister was defiant in the face of calls from the military to him to stand down. i think i thought that it it's 10 spoke we all agree that should be no clashes nicol passion and told his supporters russian yohn has been under pressure to resign after his country lost blast to his war with azerbaijan over the region of nagorno-karabakh. you loose what was a new concept in what is happening now is the statement from the german stuff calling for my resignation i consider it an attempt at a military coup you know that i took all responsibility for what happened and tried to do everything to answer all the questions myself now we have come to a stage where we cannot avoid questions towards some of our high level ranking military personnel more than 3 and

a half 1000 damini and soldiers were killed in the 6 week conflict a significant number for a country with a population of under 3000000 how should we on was forced to cede large swathes of territory around the going back that armenia had controlled for almost 30 years since the end of the last war without her by john. that prompted weeks of protests led by the opposition. rushing out to push them from power in 2018 in what was called the velvet revolution after an attempt by the previous leader to stay in control beyond his term limits the prime minister and his government have diminished what people are already but the alternative the discredited political opposition has much less so or so in general there is little alternative you partially own or his government but this is unprecedented in terms of a military rat who the government. much greater and more grave than anything the
4:04 pm
discredited in on clark you were political opposition good mom. what's not clear is whether the army is willing to use force to back its call for the prime minister to step down passion jaan says he'll announce a replacement for the head of the army in the coming days the crisis he says will be resolved constitutionally bernard smith al-jazeera. let's get an update from our producer girl over the neon who's joining us on the phone from euro van just tell us what you're seeing around you and what's happening on the ground around 'd. i know the russian young probably just finished. only one who will. probably i'm not all people are marching in the streets of. marty. he is leading the march. heavy presence of the police the joint the guy. leading the market. with

a lot of coffee because i mean it's a little pricey. though right now we have to watch march happen in the. direction of. a provides a 2nd where are you from you know a position. another probably another where. 4 the question of rallies moving power. taken. i don't know where they are not 4 8. you know if you think you would think that all the cash. rather. than say everything they want to do the same for me no clashes. to shawn. no real. power because he thinks
4:06 pm
i was elected. you can decide what will happen. what can you tell us about the presence of any security around and what is the mood like amongst the people in those protesters on the streets right now. i think 2 different moods today 'd like. the one where i've seen the show. being delusional thinking the state. where right now i can see people who are supporting or least. 3 we are not the other 2 can boxes up our preview of tortie. all. this is the 1st rally. after the war.
4:07 pm
i just. think. our power to be out of. of the scene isn't even touching on the state and we do want need to start negotiations and competition elections people are counting no really really is no connection. possibly such a young girl not. thinking right now about the protectionism i would support. would you say passion iran has right now in this country. but it's me i can i think you can repeat i'm asking about the support that the prime minister has in the country. just many support all of the people. we talked to let you stay. in the parliament 1 you always rely on the feet so all the support. is on the support of people.
4:08 pm
so i think. wall. street audience right now is going. to know. all about. the future. what about what the military is doing right now because we know that at least 14 high ranking military officials have called for passion and resignation so how significant would be the next step for the military. really 4. the 1st.
4:09 pm
4. name that. people can. like. ok we'll leave it there a little difficult to hear you right now but thank you so much for that update from the right in the center of your of on your own reporting on the prime minister
4:10 pm
marching with his supporters and his protesters in the capital you can see in the live picture right now on our screen let's speak to robin force a walker robin is joining us now from tbilisi so so robin i'm not sure if you're able to hear what our producer has to say but certainly the life picture speaks for itself and the prime minister is out right now on the streets with his with his supporters and the protesters. sounds like it could be a pretty tense situation what do you think is going to happen next. you know it was talking then about the fact that mr passion yet has been trying well has has signed the dismissal of the head of the military but the problem he now faces is a constitutional one because the president has so far not put his signature on that dismissal so directly. in contradicting mr passion yeah and
4:11 pm
it seems as if from the political side he is running out of allies. with the president presumably reluctant to go ahead with his orders and the military reiterating their decision to call him on him to resign and also interesting enough stating that there their letter or their statement was not made without any with any out side interference i think that's a nords to the suggestion that maybe russia was somehow involved or may have been putting pressure or finding a way to to put pressure on mr and through their contacts in the military so yes it's a very fragile delicate situation for passion yet at the same time we have seen very large numbers it appears coming out onto the streets of the
4:12 pm
capital to republic square to show their support for him and and that means that there is still a lot more to play for the question is whether we will see the military move physically into the capital mr passion and has called on the military troops to continue to protect the borders and called for calm so. a lot to still can still happen in a few short hours but he's always. resorted to rely on the public because the armenian people have shown time and again that they still support this idea that mr price she knew and brought to them which is that they had the power to make changes in the country and those were the changes that they wanted to see which were important ones political and economic reforms that they were hoping would bring an end to the corruption in the mismanagement that we saw
4:13 pm
it i mean a prior to miss depression and coming to power but the karabakh war last year has really changed everything given how disastrous it was for our media the humiliation the loss of of all of those those territories that they held and really the huge human toll the thousands of soldiers the military personnel who died in that war more than 3 and a half 1000 armenian personnel and all of those families armenia is a small country and everyone knows someone who lost a brother or a husband in that conflict in that fighting yeah robin and the prime minister has also said that change of power can only happen via early or regular elections so is that the direction armenia is heading and how likely is it that those elections take place earlier than anticipated. you know when you listen to his speech he was
4:14 pm
a little. he sort of seemed to be torching the issue by saying do we want snap elections and the crowd saying no but of course to hold snap elections would be able for him let's say to firmly establish that he still has the popular support of armenian voters and yet on the other hand if he were to concede and call for snap elections that would also be if you like a shot a sign perhaps as he sees it of weakness. so but he says he's open. so the idea and in that speech he talked about having a political console taishan to see whether there was a way forward so it looks as if given everything that's happening right now around him and the military getting involved i think his depression you know and we'll be certainly perhaps more willing to to find a solution to this crisis and to maybe give a little bit of ground ok robin thank you so much for giving us that update from

tbilisi. in myanmar supporters of the military coup march in the capital and say stuff against opponents of the power grab violence broke out in some parts of the city tensions comus facebook has banned me and mars military from its platforms highly reports. early on thursday about a 1000 marchers took to the streets of yangon voicing their support for the joint and its takeover of myanmar's democratically elected leadership they were flying the flag of the tatmadaw the official name here for the military they were met by some protesting against the coup later photos appear to show military supporters with knives and other weapons witnesses said they threatened journalist then came reports of scuffles and attacked by supporters of myanmar as john against anti kook protesters was caught on c.c.t.v. the video shows a man being assaulted by an armed group. despite this antakya protesters gathered

stored at very low temperatures this one can be kept in a standard fridge it's yet to be approved for use. well senegal says it doesn't have the capacity to store all types of covert 1000 vaccines a lack of cold storage facilities guaranteeing the low temperatures needed to store certain vaccines is a major stumbling block to immunization efforts in many developing countries there reports from senegal as the s. region. 7 i don't know it's common sense shouts street comedian son of go everyone should get vaccinated your mother your cows the chickens even your ugly neighbor he says this is more than a comedy show for son of co he developed a disability from polio because he never got the polio vaccine as a child a source of mockery he turned into humor to remind the public the small pain that comes with a vaccine injection can save them

a lifetime of suffering living in the best room with it's going to. it's a medicine for the soul but for other ailments like deadly viruses and diseases better get section 8 in there are plenty available well at least most of the time. but getting vaccines to senegal's most remote villages is no picnic in the park explains nurse john it's more about reaching people quickly in his cooler or lifesaving vaccines that need to be kept at freezing temperatures in a hot and tropical region. if they're not well preserved at the right temperature than the vaccines turn into poison we will destroy these precious doses that are meant to protect our children against diseases and come build health center mothers with their babies have been waiting for a nurse jones arrival since dawn the vaccines are to immunize the children against tuberculosis an infectious disease that kills a staggering 1400000 people every year. and through campaigns like this that
4:20 pm
senegal has successfully immunized most of the children in the country people want to get vaccinated the turnaround is to get those vaccines health centers like this one. frequent power shortages make storing doses in health centers challenging in the capital deckard new cold storage facilities are being built for the new coated 1000 vaccines some of them will need to be kept at minus 70 degree celsius. thanks for new data about given our inability to stop vaccines and the quantity that we have we will have to prioritize who gets it that means that not everyone in senegal can get vaccinated some rich countries ordered 3 even 4 times the cove in 1000 vaccine they need senegal like many other west african countries will receive barely enough doses to protect its health workers for comedian sun and co this is
4:21 pm
no laughing matter but a source of shame with a lack of cold storage facilities many in remote areas who need to be inoculated may not receive any vaccines at all nicholas hawk al-jazeera ches senegal but we can now speak to get the who's the kovacs coordinator at unicef who's joining us from new york thanks for speaking to us on al-jazeera so from firsthand experience i mean talk us through the logistical challenges of getting these vaccines to some developing countries that as you heard from nicholas hawks report lack cold storage facilities which is crucial for the vaccinations. yeah absolutely so in the months running up to to the availability of these 1st doses that we're starting to run out now we've been working with many countries too particularly in africa to really to expand and improve their culture in storage so now we have $65000.00 bridges that opening installed in throughout africa are delivered. really that run so to
4:22 pm
electricity precisely to avoid the kind of energy cutouts that plugging them into mains would otherwise happen and that started to help here but of course the logistics is more than just that the vaccine stored in country is the whole way along with chain from the minute it leaves the factory gates and and to the to the point that it actually enters those fridges and so there's a coach a now runs both on the planes on the and on the lorries once it's in countries it's a huge huge logistical question how challenging has has all of this been. yeah you know and i'll give you one example actually just to just to the getting it from the factory gate to the port of entry so again it's not even just the vaccine itself it's of course the the injection supplies to and so for the 1st doses that landed coated vaccine in in ghana yesterday we actually had to divert the plane with thanks to emirates sky cargo who were taking a plane from shanghai to dubai then the vaccines were bundled with with injection
4:23 pm
equipment so the syringes and safety boxes from there that plane went on with the vaccines and the devices to accra and then it was taken from there to those cold stores in the capital and then onwards through refrigerated trucks to the lower levels of the system so that so that all the health care workers and front line workers could be vaccinated and so you know that this was all done in short order we're talking in a couple of days but it's it will be like that that kind of process for every country multiple times over there's new vaccines come off the production lines and i wonder if you can tell us a little bit more about the efforts to get these solar fridges that you were mentioning a moment ago to the lower income countries that need. yes certainly so we been grateful to work with our partners governor the vaccine alliance and the world health organization to to road out solar direct drive fridges and those whom those
4:24 pm
really you know offer her durable way to keep vaccines cold and really that involves a group of technicians on the ground but the cessna and whether whether the facilities are fit for purpose if you like him and where to install solar panels all of that takes time and planning and then and then of course there's that the need to train health care workers and how to use and logistics experts in the country and how to use and maintain those bridges they also contain many of them remote temperature monitors so it allows us without the government to radio assess whether the vaccines are being maintained at the the right temperatures and to avoid those they're so-called temperature explosions that can render the vaccines in operable and so all of that goes on in the background and it's happening day by day we're continuing to expand culture given the kind of huge additional needs that are covered vaccine is bringing right this must be very challenging because from it it
4:25 pm
sounds like i mean you're trying to plan infrastructure and in a number of countries and without really knowing which vaccines are going to be used in the country. here that's right and to that and the world health organization and unicef has been busy in work of really country readiness to to help countries both with their planning defining their deployment and vaccination plans and that their kind of preferences for these different vaccines while at the same time of sea looking at the capacity on the ground to ensure that those preferences match with that the reasonable availability of the refrigerator capacity and health care worker capacity to deliver those direct scenes and so that work has been going on percent. well munson i think in many ways it's defining you know where and how much doses each country can be given in the 1st few tranches

we improve the lives of people who live here now instead of driving and asked and so this is you know we've made that mistake many times enough to learn that us threats and has to be part of the deal and so as we look to redevelop for example publicly on lands rights you you know create more units of housing right it's got to be built in we need housing that is resident more affordable level the rapid growth in investment his seem set to continue for some time the state's less stringent approach to tackling the pandemic and keeping businesses open is also attracting new residents in stark contrast cities like new york and los angeles experienced long shut downs something that many business owners push back against miami's mess as all those factors make this city attractive and will benefit new arrivals and those already here and with some content provision others call economic opportunity and the ability for upward mobility so it's really hard when you talk about income inequality and you talk about poverty to create opportunities

you i think it's very difficult to know what we saw today. one thing is clear that the this is the end of the velvet revolution machine made it very clear in his speech that he said this is the end a velvet what that means and what comes after is anyone's guess there is a lot of unstability in the country after the war that ended in november of 2028 the opposition has been calling for his resignation was during the war but also afterwards and today we saw what we can call a battle of the rallies. the opposition was in freedom square where as pushing and his supporters were in republic square and there is you know there are tensions that are going to be resolved any time soon or do anything in his cold. will be opposition how would you gauge the support that the opposition. i think the
4:38 pm
opposition does not have very strong support if we look at the size of even today's rallies question has rarely was much larger despite the fact that many are unhappy with the way he handled the war the opposition includes 17 political parties some of which are established parties such as the republican party and also the armenian revolutionary federation but there are also parties that it's a stretch of the term to call them parties their one man shows and moreover many people in armenia are reluctant to support the opposition because they see that as a paving the way for the return of the former regime and the former regime led by the republican party which has been known to have you know to have been very corrupt and having reached itself the finance ministry according to its of the reuters news agency is saying that the army in armenia is not a political structure in any attempts to involve that's and paul it's good politics
4:39 pm
are admissible but doesn't the army are ready involved itself in politics when 40 military officials call for parson yon's resignation that is indeed the case and that's what question here also pointed out in his speech this afternoon saying that the military should stay out of politics and that's why he signed the order for the dismissal of the armed forces chief of staff or negus party and saying he you know the military has no place in politics and that should it should stick to what it does you know what it would it should be doing which is protecting the borders of the country. how much supports personally on have do you think at this point particularly of his dismissal of the army chief. well based on today's rally it appears that he has substantial still substantial support from a segment of the population but it's difficult to know he's been reluctant to
4:40 pm
course not elections not parliamentary elections some people think he fears that his support which last year last summer was around 80 percent this was before the war 80 percent approval rating what it is anyone's guess right now but he hasn't called for simple actions at the rally today. you know to to the people gathered there and said would you like snap elections and you know when people began to shout no he said right then ok we won't have snap elections but he did call for having dialogue with the opposition what that dad love will look like we don't know moreover you know whether the opposition wants to engage in dialogue with she is also unclear because they've taken quite harsh status with some of the opposition leaders calling for violence against bush as an individual so i think it's a quite a dangerous situation ok thank you so much for joining us from london thank you

and it always comes back to community engagement right so what are those what are those those other things that are needed to be done. well the main pillar are going to go response is community engagement it always comes back to a community engagement if you have the community on board and the community feels heard and respected then the response will go well if the community is distrustful the response will have some challenges with or without 'd vaccination and therefore doctors without borders would be very happy to support or help in any way for the nation but we know from experience that you need to have a 2 way conversation with the community. or for its to be at effective rates because back in the previous evil outbreak 20132016 there was indeed an issue of trust when it came to power. has anything changed since then.
