6:02 pm
the u.n. general assembly is meeting on the coup and the crackdown and here's why this was friday morning in myanmar's biggest city go police use stun grenades to despairs protesters so far they've been no reports of injuries but several people have been detained while demonstrations have continued across the country despite the military's attempts to suppress them at least 3 people have been killed since protests began shortly after the february 1st coup. well let's speak to our diplomatic editor james bays c joins us now live from the united nations james we are expecting to hear more about the events in the me and more in the minutes to come just give us a sense of what we should be looking out for. well i think the security council which as you know is the main body that deals with peace and
6:03 pm
security issues has gone about as far as it can on this issue so far they did manage and it defied the expectations of many observers to get a pretty strong statement out it didn't have the word coup in it but they managed to go see it in a statement and that was important showed that china was prepared to criticize what's happened in myanmar but many security council members want more pressure on the military in myanmar and that's why i think they've now. thought that it was a good time for the general assembly the other big organ of the united nations to have a meeting on this a meeting called by of all canvas skeer who's the current president of the general assembly in front of all of the 193 nations that make up the united nations to give us a situation report on what's going on in myanmar some almost 4 weeks we are 26 days since the coup took place and we have the special envoy for

the u.n. to be on mark christine shawna bergen who is about in just moments to speak to the general assembly that the meeting in session and she is going to be briefing from burn in switzerland from the swiss capital to explain her view of the current situation jim as you mentioned there that the security council had put out that statement but now the u.n. very much looking to put pressure on me and mar to see if they can bring about some kind of change where is that pressure likely to come from. well most of the pressure is using the bully pulpit of the general assembly of the podium at the general assembly to say to me on bar that the situation is unacceptable with the general assembly you never quite know know exactly how the meeting is going to pan out and i can tell you that the president of the general
6:05 pm
assembly we didn't know he was going to do this but he's making an initial speech vulcan buskin is addressing the other gets in the general assembly hall and then we'll hear from the special envoy her words i think will be important remember that in the early days after the coup the u.n. found it extremely difficult to get hold of anyone from the military to work out what was going on and to make their submissions to them that clearly the key democratically elected leaders of myanmar should not be imprisoned and the coup should be reversed i can tell you that this special envoy more recently has had a dialogue and there's an ongoing dialogue with the military what security council ambassadors have told me is that they are watching what the general assembly will do and the fact this is being raised in the general assembly with the other place they're watching is diplomacy in our zeon which obviously is the important regional
6:06 pm
group here and particularly diplomacy by 2 countries thailand which has recent experience of coups of his own and indonesia that has a history in the past behind the scenes of work on me and maher and they're hoping those 2 countries can put fresh pressure on but security council officials and security council diplomats telling me that they do feel it probably time now soon to have another security council meeting and of course the next stage would not to be have a closed door meeting would be to have a public meeting of the security council to call. out of the military regime that is not being decided yet what will happen in the coming days is the start of the new presidency for march of the security council and it's going to be the us that's presiding over the security council so the biden administration have the presidency of the security council and the brand new ambassador linda thomas greenfield will
6:07 pm
be the president of the security council was telling you that she only took up her job in the last 24 hours this her 1st full day of work we are expecting her to be in this general assembly meeting and we are expecting her to give the u.s. beach ok james bass a diplomatic answer live from the u.n. james we'll check in with you later but for now thank you very much indeed well in me and mar own sense of she hasn't been heard or seen since the coup itself she remains under detention while protests continue across the country calling for her release here scott. that's where the protesters usually have started their gatherings you know the last 3 weeks plus that we've seen them come out that's where a lot of those images that we were just showing came from where the lines of riot police and the use of stun grenades the groups has to be said are a little bit smaller today than we've seen in previous days but obviously that didn't stop the police from trying to break them up trying to prevent them from the
6:08 pm
even really forming in 2 larger groups you know stun grenades were used now this came after a night of late night and one neighborhood of yangon that also saw a kind of police dispersal like this kind of a heavy hand by the police that is because in the neighborhood the residents were upset because the military appointed a local councillor for that neighborhood so that kind of flared things up so that might have been part of the reason why we saw a little bit more of a stronger stance by the police today on the streets of yangon also we have found out that they're. afraid that japanese journalist was detained by the police he was able to contact one of his colleagues as he was being detained around midday me m.r. time he said he said it was ok but that's the 1st german foreign journalist we know has been detained by police it's the 2nd foreigner to be detained since the coup on february 1st an australian man was detained weeks ago who was an advisor to on song
6:09 pm
suchi. let's take you to northwest nigeria now where police say a gunman have kidnapped 317 girls from their school it happens in the town of john gave me in some far a states the police say they have information that the abducted girls have been moved to a neighboring forests let's get more now from al-jazeera a committee driessen joins me live from a butcher up with what a few learns in the last couple of hours about the situation. well officials say must save money hunt grown and offensive or permission has been launched immediately and they are in fact chasing after the band it's not also includes local vigilant just like hunters and people supporting local communities to protect themselves in the absence of security forces so they are on the trail of the kidnappers and they think that they could make headway before sunset today this

is coming at a time when just 9 days ago dozens of students were taken from another boarding school now as dr saeed locos or other residents of. really. protested today attacking a convoy of government officials that attempted to go to the town process the situation there and caught in the crossfire which of course a number of journalists or a number of journalists were affected in the process not knowing that they were also they were not related in any way with that the government delegation attempted to go to john gabriel so the situation is a bit calmer now what we understand police and military deploying in large numbers and the locals are also said to be. asking the government to bring back their children and be at the condition of a lot of government officials is when they see their children back safely in the community ok apas e.g.

people to testify against and the parliament he says is cruel and inhuman but we've been listening to the u.n. special envoy for nguyen mark christine shane or burgen or giving an assessment of the situation in the country since the military coup took place there 4 weeks ago and she was very keen to stress that this is a coup she also strongly condemned actions of the military and urged the u.n. general assembly to send a strong message a tone of frustration at the top of a speech very clear this was not an unforseen able event stressing that genuine democracy requires civilian control of the military something which is not the case in myanmar let's head across to new york and talk with our diplomats get search
6:24 pm
teams basically joins me from the united nations james we've been listening to that a fairly damning assessments of the situation in me n mark what stood out to you in that speech that she was giving to the general assembly. well worth knowing that ever since the coup took place the special envoy has been trying to get to me on mar but she's had a clear condition from her boss the secretary general and from herself that she's only going to go there if she on that visit is allowed to see the detained leaders the real leaders of the country including un sun suu kyi and her condition and her visit have not been accepted by the military at this stage and she told the general assembly just moments ago that's because they clearly want to carry on their program all the arrests arrests of peaceful protesters that have included in cases
6:25 pm
she said protesters being killed clear that she wants the international community not to start dealing with this military regime clear that she's calling it an attempted coup rather than a coup because she says there's still a great deal of opposition on the ground an up rising of people against what the military are doing very brave people on the ground i think what we're going to see now is how the membership of the general assembly respond to this when she finishes her speech we won't get an order of speakers the way it works in the general assembly for a meeting like this is that you make it clear that you want to speak there she has ballot tronic voting buttons i think we're going to hear from some country groups 1st and then individual countries now the one that i think will be most interesting for us as we watch this is the united states because we are going to hear from a new member of president biden's kamut cabinet linda thomas greenfield who will be
6:26 pm
in the u.s. chair in the general assembly and if she gives a speech on this subject it may well be some of the fullest comments we've had yet from the biden administration and how they're going to deal with the coup leaders in myanmar. ok james bays. live from the united nations james thank you very much indeed. my. bus returned to nigeria where police say a gunman have kidnapped 317 girls from their school amnesty international says its document saying i'm alarmed an escalation in attacks and actions since january last week one student was killed and 42 people abducted in an attack on a boarding school in the sheriff states they remain missing in december and 344 boys from their boarding school in katsina they were released
6:27 pm
a week later well amnesty says across the northwest on's gangs who rob and kidnap for ransom have killed more than one phase and 100 people in the 1st half of last year in northeastern nigeria a grenade attack by boko haram on the region's largest city might agree killed at least 10 people more than 30000 people have been killed by violence in the region over the years with iran's 2000000 more displaced. well let's get more on this now from gigo she's the director of amnesty international nigeria and joins us live from a booth via skype skits have you wear this on the news there is quite an alarming surge in violence that we've seen over the last few months how do you explain this what's happening what's causing the surge in violence.
6:28 pm
it's quite a worrying trend very sad because it just shows how desperate 3 the security situation is in nigeria at the moment what is and what tends to stress right now is that the latest abductions have not when. or not the nigeria while in the pa abduction of school children women and girl has been vocal in areas controlled by boko are on when not a lot of kidnappings and not the hottest mean in other parts of mother nigeria and what this tells us is that the general is security situation which we have to last many times with the authorities but when you find. in some part of the. 27th you think he literally you need to display the community that creates have all
6:29 pm
that the response the security reform that is needed has not been adequately provided and that these bandits and crimean a guy that gets in more confidence in the attack why is the nigerian government unable to detect these attacks it just seems that the government just unable at this stage to protect its own people why is this. it's something that i think we all need to join voices to ask the manger am governmental evil to its responsibilities it's about people's lives and you'll notice that many of these communities that i think that in rural area they are poor or and so again likely outside their means whether the governor mitt exists so there's a possibility that these communities that have been ignored what the reality now is
6:30 pm
that. we've got to step in the attack the frequent the in the act and this this this this particular act is just because of the large number of children they were taking their stories on a daily. basis that we receive all the abduction in the bush that's why people are not going to get guns that's. so much as to be out of their homes at magh so all the authorities need to prioritize the likes of all major areas not just doors in the cities and. for to provide private security for themselves would you say this is a political problem or is the nigerian army not. i think there are so many factors one inspiring like i said previously a couple of months ago when we had the ends that was a protest in
6:31 pm
a chair it was about police brutality i want of the things that came out was the issue of the kitchen of security officers it was discovered that quite a number of police officers have been outside outside of their primary duty so yeah there are techniques in order to show or to be mass signed to specific private institutions to provide security in their absence or if already when in a country where we don't have enough police officers to go out and the number we have another large number is being asked signed not on public services then it's begs the question as to one how does the government respond to these security incidents that we're seen looking at seats from irresponsive point of view and secondly how to recognize the right to life because what is happening now is in big
6:32 pm
legs and it's sure that. whatever the government to be doing now be reactionary so it means that they need to really step up to take steps that identify with this culprits on what their sponsors what is happening to them and use the intelligence services now in modern state people rather than dispelling the limited security forces we have on issues. which are outside the hands that to 3 rules in society ok i'm afraid we'll have to leave it there but thank you so much or say or do you go direct survivalist international nigeria for joining us on the news or thank you for having me. now the united states military has launched air strikes in syria targeting facilities used by iranian backed militias the main target was the military base there are books that school
6:33 pm
says syria's border with iraq the pentagon says the operation was in response to recent attacks against american personnel in iraq. would. be targeted. in. the past but it was. a militia. that did the strike. but we've got 2 correspondents on the story for you this hour our white house correspondent kimberly hawkers is live for us in washington d.c. but 1st let's talk to someone of 14 he joins us from the iraqi capital baghdad some more or less have been any reaction to this airstrike from the region. well we have just heard from the iraq here defense ministry which issued a statement expressing its surprise about these u.s. strike strikes on iranian backed armed groups in syria and emphasizing that they
6:34 pm
did not collaborate of the united states on this matter that they only work together with the u.s. with comes to fighting i saw here in iraq and the statement stopped short of condemning those strikes in syria and that is exactly what those troops that have been targeted would have wanted the iraqi government to do they have been insisting that these strikes have happened very close to the iraqi border some even claiming that they happened on iraqi soil which is not true and claiming that they killed one member of the popular mobilisation forces which is of course part of the iraqi security infrastructure and so they have been pushing the iraqi government to condemn those those strikes and the iraqi government hasn't done so because they did not really occur on iraqi soil now what remains to be seen whether these
6:35 pm
strikes are actually effective ok so one of my friends who i haven't claimed to have targeted their interests i'm sorry to cut you off some more we have to head back to the u.n. we were listening to the representative from me and mar addressing that statements on the to protest let's listen in. individual kempley. the landslide of the national league for democracy the general elections clearly many 1st that the people are united behind. and prosperous society. will be enormous. mr president completely ignoring the people's desire that that model stage
6:36 pm
on 2021 that's what the day that the new parliament supposed to convene it's fast meeting the military did danes take counsel out on san suu kyi president and other political leaders and civil davis since then people from all strata of life have come out on the street all over the country and a suppress their disappointment with the military coup as well as demand that the immediate release of or detainees and return of the state power to the people through the elected government the people of myanmar are resolute for achieving that demand i agree with the secretary general that the military is not a step that will that the military is not a step they will in this modern world and the mass. the people of myanmar are
6:37 pm
resilient the server and united in fighting for the and of military. immediate release of all and law for detainees return of the stick power to the people restoration of democracy in myanmar it is attested to by the on going past to stand protests throughout the nation sit in their military coup it is crystal clear that we all do not want to go back to this is dan we used to be in believe before here i wish to recall the what the on san suu kyi in inspiring book friedan from fear i cooked within is this which denying the existence of our basic human right fear dance to be the order of the day and quote. mr president at this important juncture to continue and strong support from the international community is imperative for the bebo of myanmar.
6:38 pm
in our 5 against the military regime taking this opportunity i would like to thank all countries who have expressed their support towards the people of myanmar i also during the secretary-general special envoy and a special report on myanmar for their support but the people of me a master if we have less mr president if still in cease in addition to the existing support we need find our strongest possible action from the international community to immediately and a military coup to stop or pressing the in-laws and people to return the state power to the people and to restrain their democracy as such i would like to a p.c. all member states and the united nations as follows one issue public
6:39 pm
statement to strongly condemn of the military. to do not recognize by any means the state administration council and the military regime the re are the military to respect the results of the free and 2020 general elections for do not cooperate with the military and the return of the state power to the people through the elected government 5. take all strongest possible measures to stop the violence and do tricks commit to bind the security forces against the most brutal and the military coup immediately 6 support the c r h in conclusion mr president we will continue to fight for a government which is off of the people buying the people for the people
6:40 pm
the people and the end will be led government were double our folks to make the cantley. federal union i wish to require the international community to extend their continued support in this but mr president i believe that our fellow. seitan outside the country are following this meeting. with high interest police army to speak a few words in myanmar. mingle our. the union on the. ok with your listening to us ambassador to the un that was cured. who was urging action from the international community asking the international partners to support the people of myanmar who are resisting this coup attempts by the 1000000 mar military let's
6:41 pm
get some analysis now from our diplomatic editor james bays who is live at the u.n. jeff just talk us through the significance of what we've been hearing there from the ambassador. you've just heard one of the bravest people in the world i think right now this is the man who represents me and mark at the u.n. and he has decided to speak up against the coup and are spoken to u.n. officials about what they thought diplomats might do just a couple of days ago that me and mars. to the u.n. in geneva resigned his job but said nothing this ambassador is staying in his job and speaking up u.n. officials have told me that they fear the the reason that people weren't going to speak up is that they would be worried about retribution against their families in
6:42 pm
myanmar there are there are lots of things that could happen to the family of the ambassador who's just spoken it reminds me going back 10 years during the uprising against gadhafi when the ambassador. and his deputy deputy even him dabashi denounced gadhafi and defected this isn't quite a defection because they were the there was appointed by the civilian government and the coup has taken place since but very bravely denouncing the coup and i think his words will have a real impact on all the other ambassadors sitting in the room listening to this for example a lot of the european union giving the use response right now all of the country blocks all of the member states i think will hear those words and they'll be hard for some of those in the region who want to deal with this rather quietly quiet
6:43 pm
diplomacy which tends to be the ac in a way to follow that i think this may well be a bit of a game changer certainly in terms of the diplomacy and of course it adds to the quite strong speech we heard from the special envoy describing it as an attempted coup. so far because of the amazing will of the people that we're seeing every day defying a military regime in myanmar and so so given the significance of that speech from the. mood to and he signed it it has to be said quite emotional at points as he was addressing the general assembly in english is there a chance that this could push other members of the general assembly to take action what kind of concrete steps. can happen as a result of this meeting. well among that among the things that could
6:44 pm
happen is i suspect he will get repercussions from the military regime in myanmar and try and withdraw him and sack him from his seat the u.n. could take a stand there the general assembly has a credentials committee and as we saw with libya they could decide no he's still the legitimate. bassa i think also their actions that the general assembly could take this is a meeting to listen to a current situation report from the special envoy but the general assembly could come up with a resolution which would be a powerful message to the regime in myanmar that's not going to happen at this meeting but it could happen going forward and of course that could i think have knock on effect in the dynamics in the security council where the security council surprised many people early on after the coup in managing to get a joint statement they weren't able to get the word coup into it but they got
6:45 pm
a statement there which surprised people because people thought that perhaps china might block a statement could you actually get further from the security council which i like the general assembly has real teeth it can do things like put sanctions into place could you get a security council resolution denouncing the coup and threatening action against the military in myanmar that has seemed pretty unlikely until now but certainly i think this speech changes the dynamics of the diplomacy in the u.n. it will be interesting to see you see how other. countries respond to that speech interesting to see what china has to say in this meeting and interesting to see what the bike ministration has to say linda thomas greenfield the brand new ambassador in her 1st full day and in the job is going to be speaking in this meeting a little later indeed well we'll let you get back to that thank you very much indeed that's james bass al jazeera diplomatic editor joining us live from the u.n.

. now the u.k. supreme court says ruled that a woman who ran away as a teenager to join eisel should not be allowed to return to britain to fights for her citizenship should be i'm a big i'm left london with 2 school friends at the age of 15 and marries and i saw a fighter she was stripped of her persistence and shipped on national security grounds have to be discovered in a refugee camp in 2819 well u.k. government has argued that is bangladeshi by descent so she could live there let's get more from evan lawrence kansas terrorism and security specialist at the university of central lancashire i do beg your pardon she she joins us now. from from manchester by skype thank you so much for talking to us here on the al-jazeera news the british government. says
6:47 pm
a big return because she poses a security risk. as an expert in this field could you just explain to our viewers what sorts of risk this young woman pauses well i think because she still lines are stouts with isis she's been seen to be kind of one of the faces of isis for quite a while now by her going out and becoming a jihadi. and all that that there are certainly. believe that she can recruit others that she could still be involved with the group. that you know. at this point. i would imagine that's what the security services and the police are worried. but is it not the case that the u.k. has taken citizens back you have been involved in these activities why would they be unable to. protect the public from this woman in prison i mean does
6:48 pm
