al-jazeera world meets men and women using marriage as an illegal passport to europe you know just. for attempting to organize a sham marriage and a financial and emotional cost but then he left me for a woman 33 years older than him marriage for sale on al-jazeera. almost 2 months after the storming of congress police uncover another possible plot against the capitol thursday's house session is cancelled. when you're watching al-jazeera live my headquarters here in doha also coming up the international criminal court says it will investigate alleged war crimes in the palestinian territory angering israel and the u.s.

also. made miles military escalates its crackdown and killing another $38.00 protesters on the deadliest day since the coup. and all dressed up for the greatest show on earth but overseas fans may not be allowed to go to the tokyo olympics. welcome to the program a session of the u.s. house of representatives set for thursday won't now go ahead reportedly because of fears of a possible attack it's 8 weeks since the world witnessed the storming of the capital by donald trump supporters and now security has been tightened further following intelligence reports of a possible plot to again breach the capital will get the latest from mike hanna shortly but 1st this report from alan fischer. there's been tight security around capitol hill since the d.

played for help he called the pentagon for approval to send troops a final decision inexplicably delayed by don't trust team at the pentagon i learned at the u.s. army senior leadership at the request of the approval for chief signs we ques would eventually come from the acting secretary of defense and be relayed to me by army senior leaders at 5 o 8 pm about 3 hours and 19 minutes later as congress continues to investigate an intelligence failure which field to support the threat on january the 6th one leading f.b.i. figure insisted there was nothing concrete to act on none of us had any intelligence as suggested individuals were going to storm and reach the capital and that was the intelligence that we lacked and with the new threat a warning of why defenses are being increased agri anytime an adversary is successful others pay attention and so we're worried that this would be an inspiration capitol police say the threat has been assessed through increased

internet chatter but there's nothing to suggest that there's any group ready to head to washington d.c. with a plan of protest or violence but after january the 6th no one is ready to downplay the threat or take the risk of getting it wrong alan fischer al-jazeera on capitol hill for michaela joins me now from washington d.c. and all eyes are all washington d.c. and the capitol building again like. well yes indeed there's been no official confirmation that the house is wrapping out that session however several sources now saying that the house has decided to finish its legislative agenda in the course of the sea evening and not be sitting tomorrow one source saying out of an abundance of caution now the chain of events on this is that the acting sergeant of arms of the capitol police sent a message to members of the house saying that threats had been received you heard
2:05 am
my colleague alan fischer there referring to the internet chatter that has been prevalent in recent days the house then apparently deciding not to go ahead with that session tomorrow to complete its legislative program this evening so certainly there does appear to be a reaction from the house it will now it is reported not be sitting tomorrow because of these threats now it must be noted too that the senate at this stage appears set to continue with its proceedings it is debating or possibly debating the coronavirus relief bill but no indication that the senate itself will not be sitting in the course of thursday so at this stage the idea that the entire capitol is locked down not completely correct but it does appear from that letter from the acting sergeant at arms that there has been a credible threat but certainly out of an abundance of caution as i repeat the house will suspend its proceedings for the course of thursday because of these

potential threats for the update thanks very much mike hanna for soon washington d.c. . now the u.s. has rejected a decision by the international criminal court to open the investigation into alleged war crimes in the palestinian territories the prosecutor says the court will take a nonpartizan approach as it looks into potential crimes committed by both the israeli military and the palestinian armed groups it's been welcomed by the palestinian authority but criticized by the israeli government now washington is weighed in saying the court doesn't have a right to meddle in the region we firmly oppose and are disappointed by the i.c.c. prosecutor's announcement of an investigation into the palestinian situation we will continue to uphold our strong commitment to israel and its security including by opposing actions that seek to target israel unfairly the i.c.c. as we have said has no jurisdiction over this matter israel is not
2:07 am
a party to the i.c.c. and it has not consented to the court's jurisdiction and we have serious concerns about the i.c.c. as attempts to exercise its jurisdiction over israeli personnel. from the palestinian ministry of foreign affairs says the investigation is a victory. we believe that the prosecutor does what she has with its obligation and under its mandate that's why we saw it as a victory for international law and justice and that's why we will come to this region by the prosecutor to investigate the war crimes that committed committed in the occupied palestinian territory including in jerusalem we understand that. is war criminal criminals they should be afraid now from this. important by the from this important stand by the international criminal court.
2:08 am
buxley been told joins me now live from washington d.c. via skype is the editor of the gray zone dot com an online investigative news site good to have you with us on the program we think pushback from the u.s. i presume we can say that was expected. absolutely expected and it's really notable that in fact 2 bensouda and the i.c.c. are beginning their investigation in 2014 which was the day of israel's most brutal assault on the occupied and besieged gaza strip it lasted 51 days i documented it extensively in a book called the 51 day war and in a documentary film inside gaza during the war called killing gaza and in the middle of that assault when we saw entire family homes be targeted by israel summary executions captives executed
2:09 am
a documented all of this or much much of this in the film barack obama president at the time resupplied israel including with $5000.00 pound bunker buster bombs so the united states is clearly worried that its client and that itself could be in the dock next so it's absolutely expected that the united states would condemn this very welcome decision indeed i mean how much pushback come the use say really eggs . not a signatory to the rome statute so you really can't stop the i.c.c. from investigating no it can't and what's also so welcome about this decision is the i.c.c. demonstrating itself as a truly multilateral organization that will not only investigate the targets of us regime change operations like syria for example and will actually apply the rule of international law equally regardless of what the united states or powerful states
2:10 am
across the world think and i think that's very threatening to a pax americana an american hegemony that this multilateral organization is going to. investigate some of the most heinous war crimes we've witnessed in the last 7 years and as i mentioned i documented many of these crimes with my colleague dan cohen in the gaza strip and i think our film killing gaza should be a roadmap for this investigation. although although why didn't this statement from the state department read by that price we heard it just opens up the notion really doesn't it that the palestinians have always been talking about that the u.s. can never really be a fair broker between the palestinians and israel when it comes to settlement and we're hearing that not just in the previous administration but from the current administration so the international community perhaps has its could have its eyes
2:11 am
opened it by what the i.c.c. investigate and what their conclusions may be in the future. absolutely the united states in the biden ministration claims that it supports a 2 state solution at the same time israel has moved hundreds of thousands of settlers in violation of the geneva conventions into the occupied west bank you are simply not allowed to move your population into territory that you have secured through war and occupy militarily under the geneva convention so this is a textbook war crime that will now be investigated and i know that in the gaza strip it's also coming as a welcome decision for families like the shamali family who i had the chance to sit with after salma shamali 19 year old member of this family was executed on camera in the rubble of should j.-a by an israeli sniper this was filmed it's out there in
2:12 am
broad daylight and finally this family and so many others will have access to justice you're obviously giving us examples of what can be seen on the internet and on film of course we do have precedent to a certain extent as well max because back in and i want your opinion on this really because back in september and december of 2009. the defense minister and zippy lifted a form of foreign minister how to arrest warrants issued against them in a british court under universal jurisdiction for war crimes now this was not i.c.c. initiated but raises the question really of how much pressure signature ease to the i.c.c. will be if the i.c.c. arrest warrants issued sometime in the future for crimes against humanity. right absolutely 1st of all there's nothing israel can do to stop this investigation because they're not a signatory the only thing they can do is tell their soldiers and their politicians
2:13 am
figures like benny gantz who ran against benjamin netanyahu in national elections on a campaign ad boasting about how many people he had killed in the gaza strip as army chief of staff while footage of the rubble of should j.-a rolled on screen they can only tell benny gantz not to travel abroad that's pretty much their only recourse here unless allies of the united states in the e.u. for example can be coerced into granting israel impunity in absolute violation of i.c.c. codes in international law and so this really is about whether the west which has supported israel's oppression of palestinians and occupation takes international law seriously or whether only seeks to apply it to its own targets we'll see what happens for the moment thanks very much for joining us from washington d.c. thanks for having me on. still ahead here on out is there

representatives session churchills for thursday has now been canceled the international criminal court is opening an investigation into alleged war crimes in the palestinian territories it says it'll take a nonpartizan approach and a possible crimes by both israel and palestinian armed groups the u.s. has joined israel in opposing the investigation washington says the court doesn't have the jurisdiction because israel isn't a member of the i.c.c. . has seen its worst violence since the start of a military coup just over a month ago the u.n. says $38.00 people have now been killed witnesses reported seeing security forces firing into crowds with little warning at least 2 of the dead are believed to be teenagers foreign officials have condemned the violence including the u.s. which says it's appalled and revulsed by the reports there are also been reports of health care workers being targeted by police for trying to help protesters this video from a grocery store in yangon gone shows officers forcing volunteer medics out of

a vehicle before beating there with rifles and battens 0 has not been able to verify the footage so highly reports. new tactics and new equipment for the protesters as the crackdown from myanmar security forces escalates. but despite this wednesday's protest again turned deadly with live ammunition being used along with rubber bullets and stun grenades the protesters now wear helmets use homemade shields and even create smoke screens themselves to hide from snipers and gunmen. but when the smoke clears the protest barriers their line of defense are gone. in mandalay a regular scene for gatherings during the month of protests they have also increased their protection against the police and military but even with the added measures there's little they can do against live rounds. and in the southern city

of da way the red flag of on song and all the party was hoisted images of the military leader men on lie pasted on the ground. as the protests continued on wednesday also present when men will face 2 additional charges his lawyer describing what it could mean. with imprisonment oh i the description for a time pushed me extended 3 years a with 50 with. some feel that the charges against women and young songs hoochie are trumped up possibly to prevent them from ever returning to politics despite women being detained since you don't know distances to his lawyers and his lawyers haven't even received a copy of the child see the case file so these are fundamental trouble right. on top of everything else so as the protesters continue their stand against the coup on the streets across myanmar their elected leaders are facing their own battle in a judicial system that appears to be working against them scott hodler al-jazeera.

truly now is myra dying a poor she's managing director at the u.s. campaign for burma joins me now via skype from washington d.c. could have you with us on the program there seems to be no sign of protesters giving up despite being creasing death toll. more of helping me and certainly i agree with that they're not going to just yesterday i heard from friends no they are giving you know this is what we're going to fight and we're going to fight. with that barry. to a will wednesday's attack sent by the military on peaceful protesters affect the way people take to the streets all will list strategy change and to watch what have people been telling you. right now they're trying to be strategic it is big here. is eyes well i'm friends.
2:21 am
with the leaders ringback also have to i am moving from place to place where host of matter and also at the same time they have to figure they raise in order to move from one point to the other so they're. just doing. what i'm down so they're coming out with different ways of doing things like before we've seen the stopping of the. tigris you please a lot of those still so they're still coming out. right. and i know that for security reasons you wouldn't want to mention who the figureheads are but you did say there are figureheads so the protests are being led all being driven by driven by individuals how are they getting the message across about where to protest how to protest or when to protest is that through the technology text messaging social media can you give us any idea about how that
2:22 am
communication is work again. well you certainly use social media text which is just. every social media channel that we have but also. from my understanding yes some of them also getting out there risking risking their lives with a cheerful wall the stuff that's a home business they also have to get personal and that is very stupid of course social media is a big thing right now and then there is still if. they are captured because any social media technology or anything can anybody can trace it in the to a certain extent so that if there was yes social media is one of. the big problem that they are making rules just very briefly what's your impression that overall of sort of the international reaction these last few weeks in terms of the verbal

condemnations what more would you like to see the international community do well i mean the international community yes they did y.c. who they're saying is that. like you said they're just dandy but at this point with this military contamination doesn't mean they i mean. what we're seeing in the haze of the in that situation in 2017 they're making noise as though they're going to bring about her prayers to justice in cali believe well nothing happened until today so well betty why these all. who took. the only. point so the international community has to come out not just condemn but literally who are they showing them because what they see the only women who right now is to clean them so hold them accountable for the heinous crimes they committed to bring them to the level of only belief and if we hope to.

employ. to do think the most of all who 1st of all in the best believes are a whole really. companies has to be sentient otherwise they will continue making their money on anything and everything and also that there is imperative that i just it is imperative that the sorry i just leave briefly finish that thought oh i was just saying that it is imperative that the u.n. security council urgently impose. a coordinated arms embargo because they're using polls all the people are i mean it's not a paragraph it is literally uses ok see what does does happen in the coming days

certainly my poor thanks much for joining us from the us. now the u.s. president says a move by 2 states to ease quote a virus restrictions is a big mistake the governors of texas and mississippi are listing nearly all measures from next week despite warnings from health officials all businesses can reopen and no one will have to wear a mask biden says it's critical that states follow scientific advice i think is a big mistake. i hope everybody realizes by now these masks make a difference. we are on across the globe be able of fundamentally. change the nature of this disease because of the way in which we're able to get vaccines in people's arms we've been able to move that all the way up to the end of may to have enough for every american to get every dog american to get a shot. in the last the last thing we need is the editor for thinking that in the
