media again with images that lead to that letter to these guys that just how did it create a nuisance makes it hard for people to know what's real and what's not step outside the mainstream shift the focus covering the way the news this culture of the listening post on a just 0. 0 . hello there i'm a star and this is the news hour live from doha coming up in the next 60 minutes. protesters in myanmar mourn the dead after the bloodiest day so far invalid to continue marching against the military coup. fears of a new threat security is ramped up in washington d.c. and u.s. politicians council a session amid reports of a plot to breach congress. northern ireland is at the center of the latest brics
1:01 pm
a dispute with the european union has loyalist paramilitary groups renounce the good friday agreement. and google is to stop selling ads tell it with a snow day set amid criticism from privacy advocates and regulators. and i'm peter stone with all the day's sports news barcelona put a difficult week behind them by overturning a 2 you know 1st leg deficit to reach the copa del ray funnell. now protesters are back on the streets across after 38 people were killed in the most violent day yet of the joint as crackdown a funeral has been held for one of those demonstrators who died on wednesday in was killed during confrontations with security forces witnesses reported seeing soldiers firing into crowds with little warning now despite the deaths
1:02 pm
demonstrations are again under way while scott high is monitoring the situation for us from neighboring thailand and joins us now from the capital bangkok scott another day of bloodshed it really does feel like this is escalating. yes most definitely and today we're seeing you know tear gas being fired as well as live rounds we're hearing in several locations but we don't know yet if there are any casualties but again the kind of early in the day you know the protesters still came out as you mentioned you know after the bloodiest day since these protests after the coup on february 1st they still came out they came out of yangon they came out mandalay and they came out in smaller cities but you know obviously their posture has been different because of what happened yesterday on wednesday but also in the days before that so when we look at you know how things move forward the way that they are handling things the protesters much more of a defensive posture mainly for safety because of the aggressiveness of the security forces so but they are still coming out as you mentioned there are
1:03 pm
a lot of people out earlier in the day for the funeral of that 1000 year old young woman who was shot in the head yesterday one of 38 according to the united nations 38 people who were killed so a lot of emotion for that she's very when you look at social media any social media connected to what's going on in the streets of myanmar her name is popping up her image is popping up it's really become something of a focal point now that she was there that she was participating in this and she actually even wrote a letter saying that if something were to happen to her she would want her organs donated because what she's doing she really believed in it so she's really becoming a kind of to the forefront a symbol if you will for the protest we're seeing across myanmar and scott i believe you also spoke to the former un special rapporteur she had some pretty scathing what's. she did yeah we spoke with her earlier today she started a group that's going to investigate and look into what's been happening in myanmar
1:04 pm
since the coup with 2 other experts a panel that they've just set up a council they've set up and she said based on what she's been seeing over the last couple of weeks and obviously has deep and wide contacts in myanmar and getting a lot of information she sees the tactics being used by me in mars' military to be terrorist like she went on to say that is because they are targeting civilians with live rounds and using tech techniques such as spotters and snipers on high positions and shooting at civilians and also shooting in civilian structures at night so she says that the united nations security council isn't doing their job they need to do more the united nations needs to do more the international community needs to do more that's obviously a big challenge we're going to have a security council u.n. security council meeting on friday to further discuss the situation in myanmar but her point of view is the tactics being used are terrorist like scott high that
1:05 pm
monitoring that situation for us from bangkok thank you so much scott well speaking of international pressure the u.s. which has imposed sanctions against military leaders is now calling on of that country's to also take action. we are uphold and revulsed to see the horrific violence perpetrated against the people of burma for their peaceful calls to restore civilian governance we call in all countries to speak with one voice to condemn brutal violence by the burmese military against its own people and to promote accountability for the military actions that have led to the life lots of life of so many people in burma while we can now speak to a smile wolf he is a regional director with fortify rights that's an international human rights organization and he joins us now from cricket in thailand is not the reports have been brutal about what's been happening on the ground can you talk us through what you've been here. thank you for having me i think it's important to be clear about
1:06 pm
what we have been witnessing there and i think what the former special reports will was just mentioning in terms of terrorist tactics what we've seen here is on clashes these a systematic orchestrated attacks upon on the civilian population i think it's clear that they're seeking to terrorize the population of man ma in just admitting to this coup we've seen videos as we mention all of the social media we've analyzed a lot of that footage and what we've seen amounts to extradition killings of people so this isn't just a normal sort of you know sort of excessive force to clear protesters this is an orchestrated campaign it's happening across the country and this suggests the chain of command and these are following orders so we've seen really really brutal situations all across the country and i think the concern. is that we will continue to see more moving forward you say that we're expecting to see more i mean despite this crackdown we're obviously seeing people still pour out into the streets and then this escalation from the military side where do you see this all going. sree
1:07 pm
difficult obviously to predict but i think we're in a very serious and dangerous situation the country needs support and needs the need to know that the protesters need to know their solidarity coming from across the world i think if we see those protests coming out today with people that i've been speaking to that are part of these protests that are in me and they're saying that they are very well aware of the risks they're taking. to go onto the streets to oppose the military but they seek those risks are worth taking rather than living under a brutal military dictatorship so i think that's a reality a realisation and i think there's a formidable strength within the population of mame up i thought so think it's important to point out that the protests on the street are just part of a wider operation into the sort of civil disobedience movement as have been tagged and i think that's really hitting the jobs even harder strikes people within the government within banking sector within trade with imports and it's really grinding the arms of the states you hold so i think this is all having an impact but i think the you know the situation escalates and gets more grave the protest movement is
1:08 pm
clearly going to have to. reassess its tactics in response to the actions of the transit where you mentioned that this culture of fear they've been telling us just about how much this is about trying to create that kind of atmosphere where people be too scared to actually come out you mentioned this huge diversity of civil disobedience do you see anyone there backing down how united is that protest movement. it's a very good question i think there's definitely a strong united. front which is basically saying we deny we refuse this crew we refuse this joint and we will not accept it after that you know that's a very complex political dynamics within the country you have this committee set up a former national league for democracy parliamentarians and you have these other groups there's the general strike committee and then the general strike committee of nationalities which represents more the ethnic nationalities so i think the question here is that unity it's really doesn't have
1:09 pm
a leadership at the moment there's sings that need to be moved forward. you know identifying their goals defining the leadership and understanding ok well if we did push this to the point where we would bring the military and other actors the negotiating table who would represent these different parts of the movement and what would they be asking for some people would not want to go necessarily back to the 2008 constitution under the l.t. particular those an ethnic nationalities who still feel that they're kind of left out of the main political process so there's a lot. you know extremely diet complex dynamics at play here but there is still that unity which is we do not want to live under this dictatorship well when it comes to leadership within that movement there was that period that we saw with the threatening of communications in those overnight arrests of people who had to be leaders. say has out still under detention how many others are being held right now and do we know how they absolutely are. i think the figures that we have of them is probably roughly around a 1000 if we don't have
1:10 pm
a documented ourselves but we have been following they are dependent no we have people that are part of the union election commission one of the reasons as you may recall for the for the coup is that the election was fraudulent so they're being detained in military facilities we've spoken to some family members and they say they're able to speak to them they're in reasonable health conditions others are being held incommunicado we do not know their status their health their whereabouts so it's extremely concerning and as you mentioned before it's part of this broader campaign to terrorize the population to train frighten people into actions and i think what was mentioned earlier as well was the role of the international community obviously the change that has to happen to me needs to come from within me and my but there is a very strong role and as mentioned earlier there's a u.n. security council meeting what we're calling for is a very clear sign from the international community that they repeat this q they do not recognize the legality of this government and by imposing a global's arms embargo imposing targeted sanctions against the military

a variant that originated there. a loyalist paramilitary groups in northern ireland have told british prime minister barak johnson that temporarily withdrawing support for the peace deal they say it's because of destruction to trade and commerce between northern ireland and the u.k. bret's it now the 1998 good friday agreement brought an end to the 3 decade conflict between catholic nationalists and protestant unionists. me now with more from london dread of just how seriously under threat is the good friday agreement is a resurgence of violence possible. i don't think anybody's looking in immediately of the resurgence of violence that this is the beginning of. a protest if you like over the northern ireland protocol of course nobody could be certain exactly where it ends this letter has been written by the loyalist communities council the l.c.c.
1:23 pm
it's an umbrella organization claiming to represent what remains of a number of loyalist paramilitary groups since of course largely disbanded and disarmed under that 998 good friday agreement they've said as you said that they're withdrawing support from the good friday agreement because of concerns about the northern ireland protocol that was struck as part of the post bragg's a trade deal between the u.k. and the e.u. you may recall the protocol calls for brand new customs checks between northern ireland and the rest of the u.k. they're meant to be one economic entity of course as a means of trying to avoid a return to a hard border on the island of ireland itself a condition of peace now. trouble has been brewing if you like over the protocol since the beginning of the year concerns about shortages of goods on the shelves trade disruptions and so on and particularly among loyalist e.u. unionist quarters concerns that their rights have been breached in terms of the good friday agreement because this is essentially a new relationship between northern ireland and the rest of the u.k.
1:24 pm
struck without their consent without any consultation as guaranteed under the good friday agreement they want their rights restored they promise their protest will remain peaceful and democratic but they say essentially short of a fundamental altering of this northern ireland protocol upon which the entire trade agreement with the e.u. is based they threaten nothing less than the destruction of the good friday agreement itself and then of the iris or an appears as yet again a front line for a spat between the e.u. and the u.k. what's driving the spine now. yes the seeds of the latest dispute between the u.k. and the e.u. not unrelated to what we've just been talking about frankly neither the e.u. nor the u.k. have done much to help community acceptance of the northern ireland protocol this year since it became final on the 31st of december earlier in the year it was the e.u. that threatened to institute this break clause in the protocol over
1:25 pm
a vaccine's dispute with the u.k. that would essentially have paved the way for a possible return to our border it was seen as a massive breach of trust in northern ireland the u.k. government took the opportunity to call for various easements in terms of checks in terms of the grace period for a full implementation of checks on the protocol no agreement was reached the u.k. has now said it will unilaterally extend those grace period particularly on fresh produce supermarket goods and so on. would be to allow businesses in northern ireland to adapt the e.u. has called foul they've accused the u.k. of a potential breach of international law with potential repercussions for peace on the in northern ireland those are as i said the latest point of dispute between the 2 and as the irish foreign affairs minister said this morning thomas byrne in northern ireland you're in dangerous territory when you do anything unilaterally and how that cross that story for us from london thank you so much

tracking technology linked to personal data from its chrome browser the tech giant says it's to protect people's privacy it is expected to heavily impact online advertising well it's fair to jennifer privacy is the canada research chair in data democracy and artificial intelligence at york university in canada she joins us now from london in the u.k. jennifer i want to start at the very beginning with user tracking and explaining that a little bit so if i google how to save my dying housebound all of a sudden i'm seeing ads for fertilizer and pots and insecticide new plants how will this move by google change things. well right now the way in which you're seeing those kinds of personalized advertisement has to do with your browsing behavior so there's a really big complex ecosystem that sits behind the scenes in everyone's browsers and it all runs on what these are what are called cookies to these small little text files that sit on the outside of browsers what what google is proposing is saying that these these these cookies that are typically used by
1:38 pm
a number of different 3rd parties they're going to get rid of and in exchange they're going to start to use what they're calling it a sandbox or a way of kind of using your browsing behavior instead so this is going to on the one hand it's a good thing for users because it's going to increase privacy give a little bit more power and agency and maybe kind of debunk the assumption that we pay for using the internet and browsing with our data and it will be bad for companies that use these 3rd parties that then in turn sell them to advertisers so that you're going to see an ad based on whatever it was that you were looking at in your browser so jennifer just to be clear google isn't necessarily stopping targeted advertising is changing the way it works. yes exactly and they're under pressure because actually if we look at safari has also already got rid of cookies
1:39 pm
and so has firefox and chrome is now under pressure actually because there's a lot of people who are now starting to use these other browsers because they're concerned about their privacy. question and i think that really really need to be asking and and thinking about is google's google entire business model is based on selling and trying to make money from user data in fact they made 140 $7000000000.00 u.s. dollars just last year on their advertising revenue so on the one hand they're trying to change the system so it's more secure for users on the other hand they're also trying to present a solution that they themselves carry out and i guess the question is is the company that holds that the most dominant position within this personalized data advertising system really the right body to be creating this solution so you're saying this fails kind of like a win for personal privacy but that this will actually tighten google's grip on
1:40 pm
online advertising could it potentially even drive smaller ad agencies out of business. i think that there are there are people that are worried about this and you know if we think about the ways in which kind of data moves it's a very complex ecosystem but google's mandate is always to kind of grow and to gain more dominance within the market so right now there are other players that have certain rules that allow for ads to kind of find find consumers. by removing the cookies these new these companies that were trafficking in using 3rd party cookies to either a going to have to entirely reinvent themselves and nobody quite knows exactly what that looks like although i'm sure there are some ideas or be they may become they might have to become something entirely different what i can say for sure is that it's going to put google in an even more dominant position so it has that much more power and control over the use and kind of words and and of people's data
