have hit every one of thank you very much thank you very much for you thank you of. so we've just been listening there to francis. dressing and ensor religiously to the ancient city of new or a few things came out of that of course the pope has of course continued to create he says for peace and unity in the middle east and especially in syria the poor poll saw. really underlining the need for people in the region to come together he wants to underline this. the struggles that people collectively face and saying the only way to work through them is to work together to stick closely together using our shared values he said there will be no peace without
12:16 pm
a peaceful coexistence and he also had harsh words for the the struggles that people in the region face the persecution and violence and said that terrorism exploits religion it's up to all of us to come up with the solutions to this problem there are correspondents of some adventure of aids has also been listen. and see that speech he joins us now from the city of najaf some of those just tell us what you think the highlights were all of the pope's speech a give us a sense of of what studio. well it is an extraordinary and historic moment for the people of iraq not just the christians of iraq but people of all faiths the meeting that you saw there on the stage there were muslims shias and sunnis they were christians they were saudi and they were you see these a cross-section of all faiths that represent iraq where there and it is an
12:17 pm
extraordinary moment because of for many many years decades rather you've seen iraq and boiled in and violence it and install sorts of troubles of them coming together and fame together has a sense of elation for a lot of people in iraq in the process the pope again saying that he that a program to the a birth place of prophet abraham who is who he called the father of all religions is saying that there is no space and no room and no teachings about violence or extremism in any of those religions big ensure that he highlights that the progress of this country and this region lies in everyone working together and obviously telling the christians in this region that he is with them in their time of the year and we've been speaking to people from all walks of michael been telling us about the bravery they say of the pope who's who's come to iraq amid not just all those security concerns but during a pandemic as well to try and make sure that the christians as well as other
12:18 pm
communities are all come together and that is the underlying message that we've heard from him in the 2nd day of his tour in iraq and quite met earlier the pool was in najaf where you are he met with iraq's top shia muslim cleric what came out it's of that meeting asama and i significant we see the meeting once . i think we may have lost. fortunately we will come back to him for more on that missing which which was significant have to be stressed for neither let's see if we can cross over to run a mansoor is the project director of the iraq initiative at chatham highs and has been following the events of the day good to have you back with us. this message of interfaith dialogue that we've been hearing from pope francis he
12:19 pm
was certainly making it clear in that speech in the city of moore that he was drawing on the people regardless of whichever faith coming together to overcome the collective challenges that they all face how do you think that speech is going to be received because iraq really years and in quite a critical moment right now is it not. that's right and you know just a few kilometers away from where the globe gave that speech in the city of nasiriyah you have weekly protests and weekly protesters being targeted and killed jailed by the iraqi government so as you say this is a very serious crime for many here are and i think the focus on the people is important here because interfaith yes it's very symbolic in
12:20 pm
a very important message but if you look at the iraqi government since 2003 you have had occurred you had had she are you perhaps a need you had questions working together from a political level but they haven't really been able to serve their people right and in fact it's not just terrorism but has been unsure mentalizing and taking advantage of religion but it's also been politics right the political system is based on identity and identity based politics so to me i think for the iraqis on the streets demonstrating for their basic human rights they want the park not just to address interface as such but to really push their own leaders to look after their people and that divide between the people and the politicians who come from all walks of life sort of in that way is i think the key message that iraqis across the country are looking out for so so what would you say then is the mood of
12:21 pm
iraq's political leaders because they're clearly quite keen to have pope francis visit their country this is an incredibly symbolic an important moment for the country itself but do you think iraq's political leaders from these various different parties representing they say different segments of society are they willing to listen to the pope's message. i mean i think it's very difficult for them to listen to the pope's message not in so far as coming together i think they definitely have heard and all of them say that interfaith dialogue is important you don't really have that sectarian language that you would have had you know i have to early on after 2003 a lot of the language that has been adopted has been the language of interfaith by the political class they say we are all iraqis i think the key is are they willing
12:22 pm
to actually reply on this just start i think willing to make politics not based on kurds sunni shia christian u.c.b. and you know our or not and i think that's a difficult question because this is a political system where the politicians benefit from right and saw the lizard of the book for the political class is very important because they're hoping that it could give a boost of confidence to the people right to give a boost to the people to say iraq is under my iraq is no longer a rogue state and we are responsible for making driving your car outside of conflict but there's a harder question there and that is the question that many of you rockies across the south center cross the country really are asking will they were one of the system the system is not working for most iraqis and i think that's a question of willingness and that's a question of which i think the protesters think the politicians will not be willing to genuinely change a corrupt. political system. is great to get your thoughts and your

analysis thank you so much for joining us there live from london and let's see if we can head back no to the john where asama tend to have aides with managed to reestablish contact with the asama the reason we're coming back he is because given the speech you just heard from port francis it's easy to forget the events of just a few hours ago where pope francis had a sit down with grand ayatollah ali. stanley. a very senior religious leader there who many in iraq see the top shia muslim cleric that was an incredibly significant meeting was it not the fact that it even happened but just said. just remind us what came by all of that meeting just a few hours ago. well it is one of the most significant events during his trip that yes he's going to be christians he's going to hold mosses but
12:24 pm
the most important part of his trip is reaching out to iran whose and what's making sure that he's reaching out to not just political leaders but the grand ayatollah sistani has been and we know that ayatollah ali insists on he does not like to meet a lot of people he does not meet foreign dignitaries does not make public appearances so it was choreographed event where the pope bent and he walked the last leg of his journey. greeted him standing up both of met both men in their late age frail so making sure that the message boards across to the followers of both of the many believe that they want them to live in. underlining what was said what was done by. the religious authority in iraq when the christians came into persecution from ice and him highlighting that there is more that needs to be done to make sure that all iraqis have dignity and peace in
12:25 pm
their in their lives but out here i mean this is just saying that this is a symbolism attached to it but the reality on the ground is quite different what we've been seeing over the last number of years the dwindling population of christians in iraq the divisions between not just the sects of religions but between most and sudanese and shias as well so there is a lot of bridge the divide not of divide that needs to be bridged but the pope making sure that he's meeting one of the most crucially does here in iraq and for people outside of iraq who might not know audiences he is one of the be does who has played a pivotal role in crucial moments of doubt sr whether it was the 2005 elections calling people to come and vote whether it was the 24000 religious edict telling people to come out and fight against isis or whether in 2019 been thousands and thousands of people came and came out on the streets he told police. good leaders to make sure that they respect the rights and wishes of the people which led to the

dismissal and then there is that resignation of about you've got them so he is a very significant and important figure and the meeting between these 2 leaders the leader of the roman catholic church and the most revered leader of here muslims in iraq is not just symbolic but also a lot of significance for what happens after indeed a summer benj of aids is joining us live from the iraqi city of najaf thank you very much indeed. let's bring you some of the day's other news now and security forces have used tear gas and violence to break up another day of anti crew protests in myanmar. but despite the crackdown large crowds have gathered across several say sees more than 50 people have been killed in protests since the military seized her last month the u.s.
