1:11 pm
character one of the main centers of iraq's christian community but one which many fled and i still put francis encourage people there to keep their faith and to focus on forgiveness and gratitude he also spoke of fraternal love how a common humanity is needed in order to try to build a shared future well let's go back now to our correspondents mona fulton has also been listening in from bill so many hearing there from pope francis an address along so many of the themes we've been hearing from him over the last 3 days. absolutely the same themes of forgiveness reconciliation and durrance and perseverance keep coming up in in many of his speeches and this was a marriage very moving one because he is actually now at the heart of these communities that have been decimated by the war against the eyes where he is appealing to those who have to endure he told them don't lose hope you have to forgive you have to forget that which is of course something that is extremely
1:12 pm
difficult for a community that has been through so much that has been uploaded from their homes and i saw that has come back to find their homes completely destroyed with. basically no support from that you rock government to try to rebuild technically they are entitled to compensation but that's a process that has been extremely slow not just for christians but for all people who have fled from these areas and of course there is also the issue of armed groups being present in these areas not incur harsh 1 itself but in nearby towns such as but there is a presence of a mostly shia armed group that is part of the popular mobilization force. which are officially part of the security state infrastructure which has been accused of intimidating christians of preventing christians from returning to their communities of origin with the result being that towns that used to be much already
1:13 pm
christians have now become majority muslim and of course this is the trend that pope francis wants to start he wants to stop the exodus he wants to courage this very small community of christians which is estimated at only around 300000 people he wants to make sure that they are encouraged to stay to really carry forward the heritage of the christian community and so many we're seeing him lead that congregation in prayer i'm curious can you talk us through the very very specific choice of venue here someone so many people said this town back in 2014 when i saw took that the nearby city of mosul and churches there and encourage also taken over . exactly so before we have to actually go back a little bit further after 2003 after the u.s. led invasion this is where the christian community began to develop all because of the rise of at the time there were there was an increasing number of attacks on the
1:14 pm
christian community but in those years what would happen is that when there was for example an attack people would leave for a few days and then after the situation would stabilize they would come back but that's changed with the arrival of 5 in 2014 because let's remember i was actually occupied ruled these areas for 3 years and of course no questions stayed behind they all fled because they they saw that they were going to be persecuted that their properties were going to be taken as they were going to get killed by this group so all of them fled and many of them have left the country and for those people there is very little hope that they will actually return what pope francis is trying to do and that is trying to. to people who have perhaps been displaced to the semi autonomous kurdish region for them to return to the name of a plane i was also trying to encourage for those people who are still there to stay but like i could mention i think a lot of the infrastructure has been destroyed looks you know reported earlier
1:15 pm
today from those churches in mosul where pope francis spoke earlier that was specifically this one syria catholic church where it was basically the roof of completely destroyed during an airstrike it's now being rebuilt but there are many other churches that require attention that require funding and of course that's funding is limited and that has been very little support support especially from the iraq government all of the record structure that we have seen in mosul in these areas are largely driven either by the international community or by individuals and that is why the process has been extremely slow that is why you still seeing the old city of mosul in ruins in rubble and many christians who fled mosul they may for perhaps still be in the name of a place they base still be in the field but they say my house is still in ruins i don't have the means to rebuild and that is one of the key issues why we haven't we haven't seen many christians come back we dropped and simona watching the
1:16 pm
pope there and the congregation grease him in song really many many generations of people children there singing as well as and in a multigenerational choir there clearly a very very moving moment indeed well now let's bring in ali and bora he's a political analyst and he's also been following the visit he joins us now from baghdad are you looking at all of these venues that we've been seeing for the pope's speech is not just today but really over the last 3 days they've been very very deliberate choices what do you make of today's itinerary. well it's indeed a historical visit to the pope francis to iraq. all the iraqi people have welcomed this visit to. astonishing. we did not expect that kind of form will come of all in archy's of different faiths to bob francis and spite of whatever happened in iraq and of course the message of the
1:17 pm
pope to iraqis to the war through this visit to faith should not be used as a weapon against others faith should be used as a way to spread love to straight peace to spread coexistence among people living in neighborhoods so it's historical visit ali this is also a real opportunity for iraq as a country to try to demonstrate its relative stability as i recall when he landed on friday in one of his very fast public speeches he also spoke about corruption and the need for justice and government is today part of that push for accountability as the country tries to rebuild. well it's a controversial. point of view with respect to the way iraq is going now with respect to the ongoing corruption which has led to minimum services.
1:18 pm
provided to the iraqi people your recovery just now spoken from said that the government has not yet provided enough support to rebuild morsel after long years of occupation by dire as iraq has been turned out over the last few decades by wars turnovers and. corruption mismanagement so iraqis a spite of all of that are looking to this visit as a sign of hope looking into the future that maybe this visit will will shine the future of iraq and the future of the iraqis will give them an opportunity for iraq to really get stabilized for the government to review and reform its administrative and do it connick searcher so we're
1:19 pm
yes iraq is going through a lot has been going through a lot not just christians all minorities all iraqis who have been living together and love and peace and did not show any kind of hatred against each other but politics have played a role and hopefully with this visit we can cross hands to each other and start rebuilding iraq again while the pope after he finishes creating this congregation he'll be back on his way to a bell now in iraqi kurdistan to see in a fair few rocket attacks including quite a few very recently there were also some very real security concerns ahead of this visit not to mention pandemic worries that that huge mass that's planned for later today. yeah you know that there are kids that don't care if you because of the. $1000.00 and. unfortunately iraqis were not able to overcome the poll the way they wanted we could not go to the
1:20 pm
streets we could not greet him the. part of that. there was a good what coming certainly by the government which pleased everybody because it shows the potential we have. in that respect and of course we still face a lot of challenges in this country with terrorism with the militias with the white spread weapons all over the country. there are a lot of challenges but there is potential as a top 40 this visit to opens the door to the potential of the than continuing the situation as it is all said adding that only very briefly we are now nearing the end of the pipes trip to iraq do you think it's been successful has he actually done what he set out to do. i think iraqis have welcomed this visit they challenged the message of the poll with respect to co-exist. forgetting and forgiving each
1:21 pm
other. start the process of healing and start loving each other game. of course changes would not happen straightforward we know that you are still facing good government too is a corrupt government there are still a lot of demonstrations happening in different governorates in iraq. asking for changing of regime so there are still challenges up of course still and that this visit was very successful probably helped to come things down hopefully will make those who are in power to rethink the situation to give a new opportunities for a better life for iraqis. very their political analyst speaking to us from baghdad
1:22 pm
thanks so much for being with us ali while you are watching pictures there of the pope in the city of cairo cautious so many christians fled under both al qaeda and i saw pope francis will be leaving this church and heading back to erbil where he will be giving a mass for up to 10000 people later on today we'll be bringing you that here on al-jazeera. we're moving on to some other news now and police have used tear gas to try to disperse and secret protesters in myanmar who turned out in their thousands despite the escalating crackdown there. define the military to call for a return to democracy this all follows another night of raids where security forces stormed houses and rounded up people including politicians and journalists days of live fire tear gas stun grenades and at least 60 civilian deaths have so far failed to stop the daily demonstrations well tony chang joins us now from bangkok in
1:23 pm
neighboring thailand where he's been keeping an eye on things for us tony i see that it's now also being reported that a very prominent m.l.d. politician has passed away after being detained by security forces what more do we know about this. it was appears that in one of those raids. across the city of yangon last night when the security service has been moving into neighborhoods chants sees people on a wanted list they took the politician khin maung lot who is a constitutional candidate and in charge of one area downtown young gone he's not an elected official himself but he's known to be problems in the in the party he disappeared overnight later on today with trauma to his head it's not clear how he died but we've seen the army and police in these raids using quite
1:24 pm
extreme violence seizing people kicking them on the ground using the butts of rifles to beat them so i think suspicion will clearly fall on them but these raids are going on all across the country the army going through firing stun grenades tear gas live rounds into houses. both to try and find these people on their wanted list but also clearly to intimidate the try and stop people from coming out during the daytime but as we've seen today protesters have once come out in large numbers all over the country again to protest so it doesn't appear to be working tony as you say those protests have been continuing despite the ongoing crackdown can you give us a sense of what's been happening there on the streets today. here once again we saw large numbers of protesters coming out. again met with tear gas rubber bullets in with the union heritage sites they were actually met with live fire.
1:25 pm
a number of people taken to hospital with bullet wounds apparently shell casing spread across the ground. also in lost in the north of shan state protesters who had been left alone yes they because one of the ethnic armed forces had told the local security forces not to interfere with them they did today they fired tear gas at them. so i think. we're just seeing the tension building up escalating perhaps not the level of violence we saw last weekend or on wednesday but as this security forces clamp down particularly with these raids at night the protesters continue to come out on the streets it creates more and more potential for an explosive situation. keeping an eye on things for us from bangkok in neighboring thailand thank you so much.
1:26 pm
now china says exports have grown to their highest level in more than 2 decades signaling a continuing rebound of the economy that was 1st hit by the coronavirus pandemic the janitor february period saw a 60.6 percent increase compared to a year earlier imports also rose by 22 percent electronics and textiles such as masks and other personal protective equipment contributed to higher than expected shipments these latest figures are obviously a stark contrast to the same period last year that saw a 17 percent fall in exports that was during lockdowns after the 1st recorded cova 1000 outbreak and will happen where we can now speak to done one she's the chief economist for one thing bank in china she joins us now from shanghai mr i know china combines that stage of a genuine fear because of the lunar new year but this is still incredibly impressive how much has manufacturing related to the global pandemic response like the masks and protective gear we were talking about how much is that contributors.
1:27 pm
this year situation is very much a continuation of last year since most countries manufacturing capacity years do not back to normal yet last year about 20 percent of china's exports were wholly related this year at least in the 1st 2 months i think the number would be robbers who said we're in for the rest of those who are still mostly about trying to do the necessities are and other industrial inputs i see in the last few days we've also had beijing set their growth estimates you're saying the national people's congress at 6 percent for the coming year that's a fair bit below the i.m.f. estimate of more than 8 percent are they trying to manage expectations. well i was surprised too and i heard the number because it was such an easy target and the market consensus now for the $20.00 to $21.00 growth is 8.3 percent that's significantly higher but at the same time we also heard from n.p.c. that the fiscal policy anemometer policies are both more conservative than last
1:28 pm
year so combined of those information my conclusion is that the chinese government is not trying to spur growth and they want to contain financial risks and other economic risks before they pursue grows. this year i don't think we'll see much of the money to expansion or targeted stimulus let me ask you then how much of the u.s. trade war that we were seeing damaged economic growth even before the pandemic hits and now as other economies start opening up again are they likely to increase with demand or slide with more competition on the market. the turner u.s. trade was not much of. that in fact after the u.s. and china has once again became the biggest trading partner and with the coming years i think the main computer competition will still concentrate in technology one key message from the n.p.c.
1:29 pm
is that china would absolutely stick to suffer reliance strategy in its 145 year plan so a lot more a lot more of the resources will be shifted to research science and technology and that means when it comes to that u.s. china's dependence on u.s. technology support will be lower than before but at the same time the u.s. traded dependence on china regarding our regarding to industrial impose and other materials were not necessary to go down so in a way i think the guru minds on china has been increasing not decreasing been a china us competition will continue or will as we've seen these impressive numbers today i also of course he isn't being a week ago i believe said that they had reached their goal of this thing 100000000 people out of poverty i know there's been some skepticism if that's actually happened but there has clearly been a lot of progress do you buy that. yes if you look at the macro indicators and the chinese stats on that it's what the numbers say but i don't
1:30 pm
think that absolute number is the key message here because we all know even the chinese government reckons that this is a dynamic process so for all those people that have been lifted our poverty that could fall back into the poverty trap if there is a big disease or there is some income trap. the next staff i think for chinese government is to use the system that it has established in and has failures to closely monitor those people who are lifted out of poverty and there will be targeted to support and there will be income support and there will be jobs created just for them so i'm not sure about those people of that war are out of poverty i would be more worried about the bottom 20 percent lower income people living in cities because they would be the one that would drag down the consumption recovery and that would be the biggest problems are china. bank and china speaking to us

their ballot 3 candidates of former president while a puerto entrepreneur victor fanta and tony for. the on the club's board however when to rule be tossed with taking the club forward despite debts exceeding $1000000000.00 that's look at why busta find themselves in such a financial mess well firstly there's been the impact of the pandemic playing games behind closed doors contributed to after tax losses of $115000000.00 for the 2192020 financial year they've also spent $492000000.00 on plays over the past 2 seasons $146000000.00 more than they've earned from a player transfer then there's little now messi according to a recently he's on a contract worth a $167000000.00 per year deal and in june and his future will be another headache

for the new president also there's the issue of misuse of funds on monday former president josep. was arrested as part of corruption investigation or join us now is dampening live lecture at sheffield university specializing in sports fine as a 1st of all dan more than $1000000000.00 of debt how huge of a task will it be for the new president to take forward. yeah it's a significant task for the new candidate i think as you've alluded to there that there's a long going in financial issues here we thought alone in the stretch but you know over the course of a number of years debt in itself is not necessarily a bad thing of course but it takes not being able to see that debt in and as it falls you know and i think the short term aspect of the debt you know around 400000000 of that is used you. mentioned the pandemic emboss a lunar eclipse that has been hit harder than some because of the pandemic if you look at the museum alone and international tourism brings them in 58000000 euros

and the rest means who owns a 1000000 pounds 200000000 euros lost revenue because of the demick and funds not being ground so there are this is a kind of storm also i don't know but there are yes think if you can challenge moving forward for the presidential candidate and what do you do with the squad and how they look to build and rebuild into the future and as we mentioned area messes contracts is already a huge issue would the new president be able to offer head and track to a deal to say. i think i think barcelona can afford to keep messi i don't think that's. potentially an issue i think the terms of the greenman will will be key here obviously we know that the current squad have taken a pay cut we know that barcelona's wages are $3.00 quarters of their revenue so that 75 percent wage to turnover is a concern so the wage bill would naturally have to come down and if you look at
1:54 pm
what clubs are doing under make that tends to be what's happening it tends to be causing cost i think the interesting thing with messi and wanted to be $1.00 of the presidential candidates has said this is that he he makes 08 percent of barcelona's cost base but he generates them around 30 percent of their revenue so there is another factor here with a little messy and that's around his overall value to pass alone and i think you know from a way just perspective of course he's the biggest and so moving somebody like him on and off the wage bill would be a way because but i don't think any of the candidates really want to do like even the uniqueness of messy and. him in him but also and make. as you mentioned earlier all the clubs including barcelona have been hit hard financially by the pendennis what can they do to improve their revenues. i think what we're seeing is trying to be more creative and trying to digitalize their from base a little bit more and indeed monetize that so we've seen you know office you know

online office unique streaming platforms i think that will continue it was already kind of that demick pickle trying to maximize the digital aspect of revenue income at a time where obviously we said no funds in grounds and barcelona's tourism aspects as well this is a huge. side of this is because everything's on hold from a spectator point of view in a physical sense is that as we say clicks off to look to the coke costs and you know to generate a profit you either increase revenue or you look to the premier cost so i think those are the $2.00 things are looking up to me and the longer this and then it goes the more it will be an issue for a. loaner or you know no exams in that regard than time electric sheffield hallam university thank you very much for that. by munich have gone back to the top of the blunders leader after thrilling when the over dortmund top mint went to up in
