continue to turn deadly you know in young gone there are protests again as well the same parts of the city that we've seen most over the last month and month plus a week going on so that has been going on but also there is a strike a general strike that was called by labor unions and that has really shut most of the shops and businesses but also factories and b.m.r. the the purpose behind this they say is they want to bring the economy to a halt thus putting more pressure on the judge to because of what they have done because of their takeover of the democratically elected government back on february 1st they're using this as leverage the protesters they say yes today is good monday's going to be a general strike but they want to be ongoing we know that you know civil servants have been taking strikes have been not showing up for work over the last couple of weeks so that's also coupled with this they hope to pressure the judge to come to some type of a negotiation but as we're seeing what's happening on the streets a great across myanmar that's not happening a little earlier i spoke to

a protest organizer when young go on who we're not naming for her own safety she urged the international community can listen to the people of me and my. follow our lead we know ourselves the most and we know what we are the people want the most and so i urge the international community to continue to hear our voices and share our demands the military in me and maher has sustained a decades of being shot offered by the international community do you worry that actually that kind of pressure coming from the international community is not going to have the effect that you hope i believe even as early as this week we had military generals come forward saying that they were whether there was any sanction the international community places on them so there is a very real concern that they will not be affected as much as we would hope but
10:07 pm
even so i urge the international community to come on for it we keep hearing from other countries that they are deeply disturbed and concerned with what is happening to us and while i appreciate that from over more out example my people being the star are concerned will not protect us from the bullets they're shooting at us as a result clearly and urge the international community to continue to implement action rather than just. the view of one of the protesters there 18 protesters in thailand have been charged with sedition over anti-government rallies held last year another 3 protest leaders were indicted for defaming the monarchy and jailed pending trial next week for other activists leaders are also in jail awaiting trial thailand's pro-democracy protests movement has been calling for the prime minister's resignation and reforms to the monarchy since last year.

a hostile media bent on taking meghan down the bark at al-jazeera london the trial of a white police officer for the death of george floyd has been delayed at the last minute jury selection was due to start on monday for the trial of their it chauvin in the case which sparked widespread protests last year but a higher court in the u.s. state of minnesota ordered the judge to reconsider a 3rd degree murder charge against a former officer thousands of people have marched in the city of minneapolis the landing justice for george ford john hendren joins us live now from minneapolis so john tell us a little bit about what happened today. well let me 1st set the scene if i may because you know how raucous it got here over the summer when this incident happened. you could see a few stragglers over there there were about 100 protesters but because it's just jury selection we are not seeing the huge amounts of people that i expect we will

see during the trial and possibly after the verdict in this case so what's happened is they were supposed to begin jury selection this morning and what happened was the judge said he was going to consider as he is required to do to a recent appeals court decision whether a 3rd degree murder charge is appropriate now here's how it works in the state of minnesota 1st degree is intentional premeditated murder that is not being charged here 2nd degree murder is intentional but not premeditated and the idea in this case would be that when this police officer derrick children put his knee on george floyd's neck for over 9 minutes that he intended to kill him that's very difficult to prove because you got to look into what is in his mind so now what they are considering is 3rd degree murder and that is. not intentional but with a reckless disregard the word in the law is
10:22 pm
a dupré of disregard for human life is if you were firing at a suspect into a train and were possibly endangering other people vats what the law says he's also being charged with a lower charge of manslaughter and all of the difference in that has to do with knowledge and intent so there's a higher level for each higher charge this could take one day might take a few days they might take evidence on whether this is a 3rd degree charge but the defense derrick chauvinist lawyers they say they don't want that charge and essentially what the prosecutors are doing here is giving themselves one more opportunity to convict derek chauvin and that's something he doesn't want his lawyers seem to be going for all or nothing. and john in this case as you mentioned it but he sparked a movement how do you think the trial will affect. you're absolutely right i mean we were here on those 1st nights when people were so

upset that buildings went up in flames they were riots in minneapolis now that calmed down after a few days due to a huge police presence but that movement spread across the nation this didn't start the black lives matter movement but it certainly energized it and that resulted in protests right in front of the white house and elsewhere that radiated across this country and across the globe so now if this officer is not convicted of something the judge knows that this city is likely to erupt in further riots there is already an enhanced police presence 2000 national guard officers 1000 or so police officers but so far they're not being challenge we don't expect anything really to be huge in the streets for the next few weeks until they're done with jury selection they start with a trial but the real threat here in minneapolis and across the u.s.
