a worldwide protests fall minneapolis office said over his face and charges of 2nd degree murder and manslaughter the courts set aside 3 weeks to choosing the judas john hendren has more from minneapolis. on day one of jury selection in the case of the former police officer accused of murdering george floyd the court picked 3 jurors one a white chemist a man from minneapolis another is a white man who works as an auditor and says he's got a friend who's a police officer and he's got a relatively negative view of black lives matter the 3rd is a woman of color who says her uncle is a police officer and all 3 said that they felt they could judge the case fairly race is particularly important in this case of a white police officer accused of killing a black man in a racially charged incident that was videotaped by bystanders and went viral that video sent protesters into the streets across the united states and set off riots
6:03 am
here in minneapolis and elsewhere it's rare that a police officer is charged with murder and rape were still that one is convicted in the concern here in minneapolis is that if derrick chauvin is found not guilty of these charges that those riots that began on may 25th when george floyd was killed could begin a new that's why security is heavy around the courthouse with high barricades or wrecked it around it national guard and police inside and very few people allowed inside that courtroom now ultimately the judge needs to pick 12 jurors and at least 2 alternates in order to start the trial but with 3 jurors being picked on the 1st day of jury selection they are on pace to begin as scheduled on marched. ok ivan bates is joining us live on skype from baltimore maryland he's a criminal defense attorney and a former baltimore maryland prosecutor it's good to have you with us and al jazeera
6:04 am
thank you very much indeed given the fact that there has been so much publicity about this case is there a way of constructing the trial to make it as the people to be as confident as possible that it is going to be done fairly or as i want to say thank you for having me and yes there is a way when you're looking for jurors you're looking for a big shows that will listen. and based on the evidence that they will deliver a heard of guilty or not guilty beyond a reasonable doubt they can only focus on the evidence that's presented to them and they must bring their life experiences into the court however they have to follow the law but that is going to be very difficult isn't it because as john hendren was just telling is there of course that the clip of the arrest of george floyd went viral they must be very difficult to find people to sit in that jury who have not
6:05 am
seen that clip and have not seen the subsequent protests and riots that happened in the streets and not form some sort of opinion about that. well exactly that's the concern however that's the job defense attorney the defense attorney needs to be able to articulate their defense was after services so far was he participating and doing the things that he was trained to do was that how he was trying was he carrying out his job this role as he was trained to do and that's the case and that's the best you know one of the things they say some time ago police leeson some time is approved however what we said is that the defense were they going to say that mr floyd was obvious system in a way that we could sour however he was able to tell there's so many opportunities for them to you would back the video far most of us but there's only one opportunity to see what the defense to have this story and get that across clearly of course that are whiter overtones about this case the issue of race and in
6:06 am
america and particularly in relation to the police by holding the case locally is it is that the best way for people to feel confident in the eventual outcome in terms of the racial issues in america or should there be an independent court outside the locality to be able to look at this well you know one of the things makes america great countries that work in the judicial system you have the opportunity to be judged by their peers with your 2 units if they take the case outside of minneapolis minnesota then you're not judged by your peers these are the individuals that live in those neighborhoods understand the police officers these are the individuals understand the racial issues of their own city their their lives because we're best equipped to be able to judge this case say guilty or not guilty. but again you are bringing local prosecutors
6:07 am
up against in a case involving local police officers and again as john was just mentioning in his his piece earlier on it is rare for a police officer to be charged with murder there's going to be a lot of suspicion about the way that the prosecution is bringing its case and also of course the way that subsequently the defense may handle it well that's that's sure however i think this is that you dish the system that we have had a mare and it's going to be interesting as here that most of what you asked me would be latent supports experts that the defense and the prosecution what are those of the experts that will say this police officer did their job this is how they were trained or this police officer to be able to do his job or look at this training it would be that simple and to me based on that testimony and based on that video i think they're opiate not to say guilty or not guilty beyond a reasonable doubt ivan bates we appreciate you joining us on al-jazeera we

appreciate your expertise in this thank you very much indeed thank you have. well the f.b.i. has released a new security footage of a suspect they believe planted 2 explosives outside the headquarters of the democratic and republican parties in january the f.b.i. says 2 pipe bombs were placed behind the r. and c. headquarters the night before the u.s. capitol hill riot they were discovered and defused the following day award for information leading to the arrest of the suspect stands at $100000.00 alan fisher has more from washington d.c. . first time i've seen this video it comes from buildings near the democratic national headquarters and also the republican national headquarters so obviously the f.b.i. have had this for a while one of the 1st things they would have done was check the video you can't tell if it's a man or a woman you can't see a face but they do have distinctive brand name where the f.b.i.

are hoping that someone might be able to identify that or perhaps even the gate that the suspects use no they're also saying look think about january this year was anyone near you buying a couple of backpacks did they express any interest in how would you build a bomb that even go to a hardware store and pick up piping with that be considered unusual all of this as far as the f.b.i. is concerned it could be important now you remember that these 2 devices were found around 1 pm on january the 6th that was just before a big crowd moved towards capitol hill to try and contest the results of the presidential election many people thought at the time that this was a decoys plant that those devices which were attached to timers would go off and detract resources away from capitol hill therefore making it much easier for the crowd to sweep into the building which was of course endorsing the electoral college results but also this video tells us what the f.b.i.
