11:02 am
a prayer that tucker was trying to enter a church in one of our stuff was suspicious when the attacker was trying to stand near the gate and later when the bomb exploded but bang had a more theaters a publisher and c. of tempo one of indonesia's leading news and politics magazines he says many of indonesia's bomb makers are trained in afghanistan and syria. because it happened again so many years and then it happened quite often maybe 20 or so years ago. and then after that there has been quite a bit of better security but now it's happening again. which is a bit worrying for us because. it happened a lot during that time when we have afghan war and a lot of indonesian were trained in afghan war about bombing but after the end of the then war there was should be ok but now it's start again so we award it

later because of what happened in the. one instance might be. connected to that pressure is building on me and miles military joined condemnation grows over its crackdown on anti coup protesters in the bloodiest day since the army seized power nearly 2 months ago and supported at least 114 people were killed on saturday military chiefs from the u.s. and many of its allies issued a rather joint statement denouncing me about security forces saying they should be protecting and not harming the people. is our correspondent monitoring events in bangkok in neighboring thailand joins us now live i mean it was the bloodiest day in terms of the crackdown tony for d.q. protesters and perhaps the realisation for those on the ground that it's not over
11:04 am
in either the urban all the rural areas of the country. absolutely not and i think we're seeing more videos coming in more testimony of what happened yesterday not just again as you mentioned in in those urban centers but out in the countryside as well curity services appear to have been just as brutal up in the north think a chin state in down in the south and it's real i think it's not a wake up call people are being very aware of what's been going on and we've been talking about the increasing ferocity of the security services and i think at this stage they're really not sure where it's going to end you know in the early stages of this crackdown we saw the police leading the charge using mainly rubber bullets course you could see soldiers in the background well now the soldiers are just coming out they're firing automatic weapons using hangry unaids and not just using
11:05 am
stun grenades anymore and i think people are very aware that they are now facing the full might of the myanmar armed forces in mandalay alone today there are 30 funerals should take place from people who died in yesterday's. crackdown and i think that's gives you an idea of just how hard people are being hit and it's not just lives being lost last night fires raged in mandalay and gone township apparently was a fire that was could have been relatively controlled when the locals went out to try to extinguish the fire as they were fired upon by the security services and by the time they managed to get there safely the fire killed more than 60 homes those people are now. stuck they have no no no possessions they're in need of food shelter medical needs as well people in mandalay apparently have been trying to collect things to get to them but they can't get there because the
11:06 am
security services are blocking off the roads again and i think. it gives you a sense of just how desperate the situation now is on the ground and of course it is desperate and desperate enough for course the worldwide condemnation that we're now seeing and hearing including statements as we mentioned from several defense chiefs various countries one wonders if it will have any effect on the military considering the military have now got another front to brewing and that's having some sort of conflict with ethnic armed groups in other parts of the country. well they do indeed think they are now and to supporting conflicts with those armed groups in fact last night as well as the crackdown we saw from the security services the myanmar force flew a bombing raid on a village close to the border of thailand in an area controlled by the k n u the korean ethnic korean national union and we understand that at least 3
11:07 am
people died in that and that is now forced more than 100 refugees over the border into thailand and again i think this is a concern for the international community who don't want to see the kind of chaos that they've seen in decades past when hundreds of thousands of refugees from in mark aim pouring across the borders. but despite these messages of condemnation and there were many yesterday from ambassador from the u.s. secretary of state who called this a horrendous act by the myanmar military and those 12 defense ministers as you mentioned earlier put obviously clearly intended that to give that message to the generals in charge of the joint on armed forces day well they just weren't paying attention a gentleman on live was photographed at a large reception in the evening of celebrating that armed forces day and i think we've seen them if nothing else being consistent since the military coup they have
11:08 am
maintained that what they did was lawful they are just taking back control briefly that there will be elections in due course of course they haven't mentioned any kind of timeline and the concern is that while they have built up this crackdown while they have treated with the protesters more and more harshly the situation gets worse and worse but they are unwavering it seems in their determination to take back complete control of the country to be checked for the up there but it's very much trying to change our correspondent in baghdad. now the french energy giant total has hold of operations in mozambique after an attack in the northern town of parma nearly $200.00 people including foreign nationals are trapped in the hotel where fighting is in its 5th day the hotel has been attacked by fighters linked to eisele now the reuters news agency is reporting that some civilians who tried to escape have been killed her metasearch is monitoring events for us from
11:09 am
harare in zimbabwe obviously you know sketchy details of what's coming up but what more do we know about what's going on in parma. well communication has been down for a few days in parma so it's not easy independently verifying some of the information coming out from there but what we know from official sources is that the attack happened on wednesday afternoon armed groups into the town from different directions it seems like it was a coordinated attack they attacked a bank big tech to business center they attacked what seems to be some kind of police or military post the people in the tower in a nearby village fled into the bush so mozambican v.i.p.'s on fire and as were holed up in a hotel there in hama we had this time some of them have now been evacuated to the to the provincial capital came by the attack half an hours after the french capital tell it now it is going to resume gas operations in the area society will feel that
11:10 am
maybe the attack had something to do with that but there is another theory of the place had been relatively quiet for a few days so humanitarian workers are now finally able to bring in food bring in medicines into the town to help people the who need assistance for these the theory that maybe the attackers the armed groups the insurgents also trying to target those supplies as well so her reward sort of assistance is either the mozambique security service is getting from outside or what sort of resources do we know of that are going into the area in terms of the government trying to fight these insurgents. well south african government has said that some of its citizens are trapped in my so they beefed up staff at the embassy in the capital my puter mozambique's capital and they say they are going to try and use their services there to try and evacuate the citizens we know that the united states has sent its special forces to train the mozambican army portugal the former colonial
11:11 am
power cities committed to change the mozambican army there are reports so the africa has been training some nutrition is also from when it comes to the players on the ground there are private armies operating in the area some of them are from south africa their port said they've been busy evacuating some people from that hotel of the in parma and then you look at the region southern africa african leaders have been meeting on or virtually or in person discussing how to help mozambique and saw far they've come out and said there is a plan but they haven't said what the plan is going to be so adding a speculator that it is going to be some kind of military intervention that africa the biggest economy in the region could probably send in troops and some other countries in the area may also help to do that help was a huge defeat the insurgents you had 10 workers and are concerned that because whatever military intervention happens from whatever side it comes from people on the ground will be affected what we know is that some of those people displaced are
11:12 am
trying to get to pinball the provincial capital and when they get there they get assistance the most that he can government and edwards are trying to move those people from pym always very overcrowded to other areas in the country ways deemed to be safer. of course will continue to monitor events in northern mozambique review thanks very much for the moment. still ahead here on al-jazeera the cost of connectivity scientists sound the alarm over the solar number of satellites being launched into all this national day of action protesters across the u.s. demand an end to prejudice prejudice and violence against asian americans those stories after the break and. it's time for the perfect gentleman. sponsored plan qatar airways

i. got your resume with me so robin a reminder of our top stories at least 14 people been injured in a suicide bomb attack on a cathedral in indonesia it was carried out in the city of macassar as the congregation was gathering for the 1st day of the easter week military chiefs from the u.s. and then a good dozen other countries of issued a red joint statement denouncing miramar security forces saying they should protect citizens not to harm them that's after at least 114 people were killed on saturday the french at the g. jolly total halted operations in mozambique following your attack on a remote northern town nearly 200 people including foreign nationals are trying to the hotel in parma let's return to one of our top stories of course there that attack on a cathedral in indonesia jessica washington joins me now from the capital jakarta
11:16 am
jessica what more do we know about the attack in terms of what the authorities are saying about it. well so here we have heard from authorities just in recent hours in the aftermath of the attack on this cathedral in marcus' hour we've heard from indonesia's national agency for counterterrorism and they've described the attack as a terrorist attack we've also heard from the indonesian council on churches which said the attack was a cruel act on the day of palm sunday when christians begin their easter celebrations we also recently heard from the indonesian minister for religious affairs now he said that whatever the motivation for the attack and that is still trying to be established by authorities whatever that motivation is they can be no justification for such a heinous act he also called for security forces to step up their efforts in securing places of worship and protecting religious minorities and of course that
11:17 am
brings me to my 2nd question we had a guest on al-jazeera earlier who was suggesting that you know with various attacks on places of worship over the years security had to increased around these locations especially for minority groups what's your understanding of whether minority groups are protected in what is a muslim majority country. well it's an interesting question and for the most part i think we can say that indonesian the security forces and authorities have been quite successful in protecting these communities from such attacks in the early 2000 these bombing attacks were quite frequent churches were frequently targeted by these militant violent groups but since then the security situation has really changed authorities have really cracked down on these groups they are still active to some extent there are still a handful of these groups which continue to recruit members but authorities have been successful in combat in the extent to which they can spread their violent
11:18 am
activities so for the most part most of these militant activities have been restrained to smaller scale attacks because of the arrests that have been carried out not just in recent weeks there were a number of arrests on the leaders of some of these violent groups and police are still working to ascertain as to whether those arrests may have been some sort of whether these groups may have wanted to retaliate in response to some of the arrests that have been made now they're still trying to work out the motivation but as security experts have been telling us for the most part indonesia has become much more secure much better protected against these attacks and we know that in the lead up to major religious holidays for christians for other religious communities such as easter christmas good friday security efforts are stepped up now we have heard those calls from the minister of religion to make sure these communities are protected but for the most part we can be quite certain that these
11:19 am
large scale attacks which have afflicted indonesia in the past there's only a very low possibility of something like that happening again for the update thank you just to washington or to coles. new terms are being made to move the container ship that's blocking syria's canal in egypt for 6 days a dutch salvage firm working full to dislodge the ever given says it could succeed by the start of the week because. night time in the su is canal but work to free the giant container ship blokey one of the world's most important shipping lanes doesn't stop the stern of the vessel is now free and the egyptian authorities say they're hoping high tides in the arrival of more tug boats on sunday will help their operation the 400 meter long ever given ran aground in high winds on cheese day close to the south end of the canal but bad weather may not be the main reason why the ship got stuck. on us and you could have been
11:20 am
a technical or human ever that will be revealed through the investigation many different mistakes might be the reason but we cannot prove anything yet the only clear reason is that there was strong winds under some storm. 12 percent of global trade passes through the suez canal in egypt between the red sea and the mediterranean goods passing between europe and asia without having to round africa the ever given this mishap has temporarily closed a route that's used by 50 ships every day with the canal blocked more than 300 vessels are now waiting in maritime traffic jams that either and more than a dozen ships have live animals on board and his tank is q oil prices are rising the blockage another blow to global trade already disrupted by cave in 19 well this you know $89000000000.00 a day actually is quite small relative to the overall global economy obviously there are there are ripple effects and we're already seeing. it remains unclear
11:21 am
when the ever given will be refloated the salvage firm hired to extract it says it could be free within days but some maritime experts all skeptical it's going to take a month or prep. longer they need to lighten the ship which is to remove various things the ersten earliest ones and i'm surprised this hadn't begun before is to remove the bunker fuel oil used by the ship to propel itself boil to lubricate the machinery and then the water and. the hope is a combination of mu tugboats dredging and high tides will succeed in dislodging the advocate and if they don't plan b. will involve lightning its load something that could take weeks and would be another setback for global trade victoria gates and the al-jazeera colombia's government has blamed dissidents from the fog rebel group for a car bomb attack in a town in the southwest of the country president even duquesne visited the blast
