ground despite the increasing bloodshed a diverse group of protesters is keeping up the pressure on the generals to give up power and copies of a 2008 constitution which allowed the military's role in politics were burned on wednesday a group of deposed politicians scrapped that document entirely and promised to set up a federal government the military is also under pressure from its regional ally thailand that's where hundreds of refugees are sheltering to. airstrikes by the military. kind of a square free troubled by the reports of more casualties among them in my people. during this past weekend. we reduce our call. for the exercise of utmost restraint. the escalation of situation. and to violence and for the release of detainees let's get out there from scott heiler who's joining us from bangkok in neighboring thailand so scott what are we to read into the comments made
1:03 pm
by the thai fire foreign minister. that in well this is directly related to what happened over the last couple of days particularly this past weekend that's where myanmar army military carried out air strikes in some territory held by the korean ethnic army and this is something we haven't seen for about 20 years or more so what it happened is that obviously injured people that had to seek medical attention and they came across the border into thailand but also about 3000 initially 3000 people fled across seeking safety there is a difference of opinion of exactly what happened as some human rights group says that thai authorities pushed about 2000 of those people right straight back across the border into myanmar the thai government here said no they went back because it was safe but what we do know is over 200 people are here still getting medical attention by thai authorities right along the border there obviously you know this
1:04 pm
is this is a distinct case of violence going on in myanmar that can be related to the coup you know they have been these ethnic army conflicts with the central military for decades but this is definitely related to a spike of what's been happening since the coup that now has flowed across the border so it's bringing in a regional neighbor and as we heard that statement from the spokes person books been from the foreign ministry that those are the strongest words we've heard yet from the administration here in tallinn on what's going on next door and scott what do we know of the fate of. right now there was there was another. court hearing those connected via monitors t.v.'s for her several cases going against her we heard from her legal team that said at the end of today's hearing there were no additional charges put on song
1:05 pm
suchi the big concern about that is she has 2 relatively lower charges the initial charges put on her by the jones just after they staged the coup one is the possession of illegal possession of walkie talkies another one is breaking over 1000 restrictions but then there have been videos released of people accusing her of bribery so those are obviously much bigger charges and there's there's a. possibility that she could be charged with treason that hasn't been confirmed but it's been talked about in myanmar and that is a very very serious charge but again today in this hearing expected hearing planned hearing there are no new charges put against her what we do know yesterday and wednesday her legal team was actually able to communicate directly with her again via this t.v. link for the 1st time since she was detained on february 1st they said she appears to be in good health but again really no advancement on these cases against her these these at least 2 cases against her out of the hearing today on thursday ok

travel to state to train with the current national defense organization it's one of 2 armed branches of the qur'an national union that has been fighting for more autonomy for the car and minority this protester has asked us to conceal his identity. when we protest on the streets the burmese army and police shoot at us and of crack down on a demonstrations but we're not afraid we've been afraid of them for many years this time we have to fight against their power we have to win this time. the conflict in state is one of the world's longest running civil wars and has escalated in recent days. this video obtained by al-jazeera shows one of several airstrikes launched today by the myanmar military on areas controlled by the qur'an national union. several people were killed and rights groups estimate at least
1:08 pm
10000 have been displaced. i'm very afraid i've heard that villages can't flee to the thai side because thai soldiers had blocked them the qur'an national union says it's bracing for a major government offensive in its territory we have to get rid of them and. back. across the current troops are tacking positions and cutting off supply routes at least 3 other ethnic groups have promised to support protest is if the myanmar military does not stop killing civilians immediately but some fear that may not be enough to reverse the coup and could put the country on the path to a full civil war. let's talk about this with a smile wolf who's the regional director with the human rights organization for joining us from thailand thanks for your time with us on al-jazeera what impact is all this going to have when you see the protesters turning to ethnic groups for
1:09 pm
training how is it going to impact the situation on the ground. thank you for having me. i think the 1st. important to say that. i think the decision of the people making to train with ethnic groups if you see in their annual report. this is a culmination of 2 months of brutal crackdown by the burmese military in a moment a tree against civilians so it's not necessarily unexpected development but it is concerning and i think the impacts are. are great in the sense not just in terms of whether the civil disobedience movement and protesters may start seeking to turn to more extreme methods to resist the coup but also what we're seeing there and what you are sharing in your reports there is this sort of extension of the fighting out into the ethnic areas and you've seen that the sort of defacto or parallel government under the name of the c.r.
1:10 pm
ph is constitution and it's really trying to seek to bring in the ethnic groups that have long had these longstanding tensions some cease fire agreements and they've all lapsed actually over the last few weeks so there's concern that as has been raised already that this may escalate and they will see increased fighting and that's going in in the ethnic areas but it's also going to have a severe impact on the safety and security of the of the wider population yes so so how do you expect the military then to to react or what will be what will the military do next. it's hard to say the military they announced a cease fire actually just a day or 2 ago saying that they wanted to ensure that there was a cease fire across the country as a unilateral ceasefire but those airstrikes as we've seen in korean territory the current national union really is is it's a sign from the tatmadaw that they're trying to send a signal that they are not going to sit back and allow the ethnic groups to form
1:11 pm
some kind of alliance against them and the concern is that we'll see ground troops another kind of offensive potentially. large scale fighting in some of the ethnic areas and we've already seen the use of the use of air strikes this is an escalation from the military side the concern i think for the military will be that they could see themselves opened up on many different fronts and that is really is not just a concern as you say for the military but also for the entire populations i said before so there are a very deep concerns i think the military may not have predicted such a unified potentially unified response against the top model and this crew is this going to then spur the international community to do more about the situation in myanmar i mean we heard from the u.n. special envoy he's urging the security council to consider potentially significant action how likely is that. i mean that significant action should have been
1:12 pm
taken already to be honest with you there has been a clear writing on the wall that this situation is continuing to deteriorate the violation is that we've seen committed by the military since seizing power on february 1st and these are. crimes against humanity we've seen killings torture mass arrests indiscriminate killings extradition to extrajudicial killings of innocent civilians the u.n. security council has spent again this week and it's again failed to take that significant action the concerns i would say that if they and you know echoing the u.n. special envoys remarks that this situation does continue to threaten to escalate unless more significant action has been taken we've seen veto powers or you know vetoes haven't been forced yet within the security council what we are aware that china and russia are preventing a kind of consensus for a global arms embargo for example or unified international sanctions and other
1:13 pm
actions that could be taken that would push the military into a position where they may feel that they must negotiate and try and take a step back from this ok thank you so much ensure though that if the situation sorry if this iteration develops too much and it's on it's a civil war it's much more difficult for the international community to take that action as well thank you so much for speaking to us from for cats. and some are had on the al-jazeera news hour including. all that probably read i think written. more distressing video of george floyd say to all arrest proves overwhelming for witnesses at the trial of the former us police officer accused of his murder brazilians works through the night to burry those who died of corona virus but the president continues to resist lock down measures in sport the best women's football teams will soon be targeting an appearance in the australian city of sydney pharrell be here without story a little later. but

in exile on trial already behind bars for the $2400.00 people have been charged as part of this crackdown and police have told us more of arrests even so the pro-democracy activists say the i won't give up the game is not over we will continue to fight for some we don't want to see really so far we want to do it in a new small and nonviolent way but we will carry on at least 3 in this group will be back in court on trial for the charges the court is expected to hand it sentence on this case later this month sara clock al-jazeera hong kong alissa speak to nathan laws a prominent pro-democracy activist living in exile in london he's joining us from there thanks very much for speaking to us on al-jazeera you must be very displeased with this decision how big a blow is this for the pro-democracy movement in hong kong. so this case that they show sonando around with crackdowns on hong kong prominent activist and if you look

at all the problems activists in hong kong there are the being trialled jailed or in exile it really shows. crackdown as a whole concert liberties and freedoms are all around it and every one of us are experiencing it right so what impact is this going to have on your movements going forward. so there have already been numerous rounds of political persecution and i think the people are now they are aware that the courts has been used as a legal weapon to prosecute democratic activist and for us it's like a winter storm that we may. end merging in a lot of democratic movement but i think it's just a movement has its own cycle i think for now people will tend to be resisting in much covert way but when the time comes the people will rise again what do you mean when you say in

a more covert way. so for now rallies are being banned people are not allowed to speak. political stance because that could possibly be seen as. security at all so people turn into a more economic way butin up economics site quote circles that benefits the protests and protesters going to back and work supporting people in jail and also doing it with a cultural form these are more cold food way that they can express their opinion what do you make of the response of the international community so far china will no doubt be pleased with. this this isn't a sentence the activists to jail or what about countries like the u.s. some say it see it's has sort of taken a harsher approach to china than many had expected do you agree with that assessment. undoubtedly imprisoning political activists in hong kong is
1:19 pm
one of the tactics china deployed to of course the democratic men and i think the international community should respond sess assertive best possible including sanctioning hong kong officials who are responsible for these crackdowns and i think the u.s. has been nothing a very tough policy which is actually good at their action to cut is authoritarian expansionist influence but the other alliance which share the same that loose which at the mocca sees they should step up and they are measures and sanctions although those. in the region may follow we thank you so much for speaking to us on al-jazeera thank you so much at least 30 people have been killed in ethiopia's orombi our region gunmen are suspected of carrying out the attack on a village in west got zone on wednesday witnesses have said some of the victims were ethnic. as the massacre is the latest outbreak of ethnic violence which the
