a very very heavy heart. that i announce one of our officers has succumbed to his injuries less than 3 months ago another member of the capitol police force died after trying to battle back a pro trump mob attempting to stop the election in that case reinforcements took hours but thousands of national guard troops have been here since just after the january 6th attack and they quickly surrounded the building alert for a follow up attack that didn't come congress is not in session police say they didn't have any intelligence on this suspect so now they look to find his motive most of the fences that have surrounded the capital since the attempted insurrection have been taken down there were thousands fewer soldiers walking the grounds there was a sense that life here was going back to something approaching normal not now not after another deadly day in front of the symbol of american democracy. al-jazeera

washington. well in a statement president joe biden said he and his wife jill were heartbroken to learn of the violent attack at a security checkpoint on the u.s. capitol grounds which killed officer william evans of the u.s. capitol police and left a fellow officer fighting for his life we know what a difficult time this has been for the capital mike hanna joins us live now from the capitol building at this stage what more details are we learning about this incident near the capital. well obviously the investigation is ongoing and most importantly investigators are seeking what course the possible motive for this attack the 25 year old noah green from indiana is prepared believed to be the driver investigators are now finding out exactly what motivated this person to conduct this attack we've had condolences being offered from president biden from the speaker of the house and certainly the one remarkable thing about
2:05 am
that day was the speed of the response to this event the national guard were deployed within 30 minutes of the man driving into the barricades but it's very different to what happened on january the 6th when it took hours before the national guard were deployed they are still some 2000 national guard troops stationed here in d.c. they were kept on here posted january the 6th until may at special request but they were certainly very quickly on the scene and they established the initial. that was put down right around the capitol as it went into a lockdown which was lifted a couple of hours ago daryn mike and i suppose the one relief from all of this is that congress is currently in recess and with the easter weekend they're not that many visitors to the capitol complex. well there are no visitors still there are still very strong security restrictions on the
2:06 am
capitol complex itself media and obviously workers are able to go through but visitors have not been going through the capitol area at all but definitely there were no representatives here or very few the congress is in recess at the moment for 10 days so once again there will be questions about the timing of this attack why this person decided to carry out an attack on a capitol which was virtually deserted given the fact that the whole congress is in recess but as i say the the investigations will be ongoing the fact that there was no direct threat to members of congress simply because they were not here would have been a relief to the security officers who were controlling the situation and it was a very very serious situation indeed with the massive security response the capital going into lockdown once again for a number of hours but as i said all has returned to what passes for normal post
2:07 am
january the 6th all right mike hanna live for us there in washington d.c. mike thank you so let's bring in p.j. crowley he's a former deputy white house press secretary and also served as a special assistant to the president for national security affairs he joins us from alexandria in virginia p.j. good to have you back on the program so what's your response then to this incident that happened today at the capitol because as mike was saying even though it sets off a major security alert the lockdown and the response did seem to work. i think that's right there's still a lot we don't know but it could be that what we find out is that you have an individual attack you know involving some sort of mental instability some sort of perceived grievance against government and the use of a car as a lethal weapon this is actually the kind of threat that we've understood for decades and the barricade itself you know worked obviously we have we grieve the
2:08 am
loss of one officer the injury of another but but obviously he didn't get in a position to threaten the capital that makes this a a very different kind of threat than what we saw in january 6 yeah p.j. how difficult is it to prevent these lone wolves style attacks on unwilling f.b.i. been looking to see if there's any connection to the mob that breaks the capital back in january at least on the surface i don't think you know there's a connection other than the fact that that now the u.s. capitol is seen as a target for people across you know with a range of political views you know different you know if somebody is determined to in this case perhaps you know you know and that gave murder suicide you and i walking across a busy street somewhere would be vulnerable if someone wants to use a car as a as a weapon you know so there's a limit to what we can do in this particular case you know the individual did not
2:09 am
threaten the capitol itself as you've reported you know the congress was out of recess so this this is not a mass casualty situation as it could have and this is yet another body blow for the capitol hill police department using yet another officer so soon after the insurrection back in january pj's out difficult is the role they play in god being the nation's capitol. well to those of us who live in the in the washing d.c. area they play a vital role and i think you know this this comes against the backdrop of the insurrection on january 6th and it will influence you know that careful calculation that authorities are are currently going through what is the right balance between protection of a vital you know government building and at the same time giving citizens proper accessibility you know to know that building but also their elected leaders and we're still kind of working our way through that yet and that's an important point
2:10 am
to make page and i'm going to final thought from you because in terms of the broad a security response that had been plans to slim reduce the number of national guard troops deployed in the capital since the insurrection is today's attack then likely to change those security plans i don't know again you know the you know the kind of defenses that stop this attack we've actually implemented over the course of many many years so this doesn't necessarily change our perception of you know various threats to a building like the capitol you know in a way that january 6th did you know not you know january 6th was a very very different kind of situation we can we always knew the capital was a potential you know target by the same token we didn't expect a you know domestic militia group it to charge the capitol try to interrupt the function of government so we're still working way through that this is war all the

writing of something that we've long understood and have taken steps to guard against p.j. crowley always good to get your thoughts here now jazeera thank you very much indeed you're welcome. now a senior us police officer has taken the witness stand at the trial of derek champion who's accused of killing george floyd richard zimmerman testified that child instances in the mean long floyd's neck was a totally unnecessary act of deadly force gabler's on the has more now from minneapolis. the end of the 1st week of the derricks jovan murder trial may have lacked the tearful emotion of the previous days but for the defense team it was perhaps the most devastating the jury heard from one of the highest ranking members of the minneapolis police force lieutenant richard zimmerman a nearly 40 year veteran and a homicide detective he was called on to the scene in the aftermath of floyd's

me the family just wants justice all i'm doing is setting back just waiting you know just waiting for that day to killed when i hear guilty i don't get to see him at thanksgiving or christmas or hollowing i don't get the city anymore he don't get to see his baby he don't get to do any of the things he's supposed to be doing because somebody decided that that day he would be judge jury and executioner it's extremely rare for police officers to testify against one of their own and the dramatic testimony caps a week that saw several witnesses break down in tears in front of the jury while recounting what it was like to watch george floyd. who do you think is winning this case in the 1st week. there's no doubt in the 1st week that the government put its best foot forward in one of the things that they did is used video repeatedly and

in different ways to emphasize their point because video has that objectivity that no eyewitness is going to have however for many people here in the african-american community there's still a long way to go in this trial they have control right now we're just they're just what's in their opinion we don't have no control he can through this journey kill filter they said not guilty he can walk away scot free before the trial will continue on monday and it's expected prosecutors will continue to call more witnesses perhaps even the chief of police gabriel's on al-jazeera and yeah police. time for a short break here on out as here out when we come back vaccination struggles out to germans frustration and confusion we know what's gone wrong with their coronavirus response and heightened security in indonesia as christians mark good friday and easter more on that stay with us.

a way and the sanctions relief steps the united states would need to take in order to return to compliance as well we don't anticipate presently that there will be direct talks between the united states and iran through the process though we certainly remain open to them alan fischer in washington looks at the u.s. approach to these talks. we know that joe biden when he was campaigning to become president said it was his intention to go back into the iran nuclear deal certainly over the last couple of months there have been talks between the american sates and the iranians through intermediaries including the europeans trying to see if there is some way they could come to an agreement with neither side ready to make the 1st step to really and were to stop the enrichment of uranium the said they would consider that if the united states lift sanctions or perhaps even gave them the $130000000000.00 worth of oil sales cash that was frozen abroad neither side ready to make that 1st step so there have been discussions in appears there's no

been a breakthrough it's getting both sides together in the same city of perhaps not in the same room perhaps not face to face talks but certainly this is something that the united states are looking forward to from the state department just in the last 10 minutes of had this statement where they see that it is early days and while there is no signs of an immediate breakthrough in the don't anticipate an immediate breakthrough and there will be difficult discussions ahead we believe that this is a healthy step forward you have to remember a couple of things 1st of all that the iranians have a presidential election in june so the united states would be keen to at least get the workings of a new deal under way before then the other thing is that they want to talk about things outside the nuclear deal they don't just want to talk about and richmond and the process that was there before they also want to talk about missile testing and also whether or not iran will look at how it influences other countries in the region at least $54.00 people have died in taiwan's worst rail disaster
