2:02 am
a peak of more than 10002011 the 2001 attacks by al qaeda led to the us invasion of afghanistan which is america's longest war. the president has been consistent in his view that there is not a military solution to afghanistan that we have been there for far too long that has been his view for some time well documented well reported on he believes that and he remains committed to supporting negotiations between the parties which many of you may be following are resuming next week and he also believes we need to focus our resources on fighting the threats we face today 20 years almost 20 years after the war began what might come as our correspondent following events for us from washington d.c. my reaction to the white house statement has been coming in from all quarters especially concerned i'm criticism from the republicans.
2:03 am
yes indeed the reaction is somewhat mixed particularly from congress there the senate minority leader mitch mcconnell has described the decision as a grave mistake this is a sentiment shared by a ranking member of the powerful house armed services committee mike rogers who says that this could impact on the u.s. national interests and its security some democrats to have expressed reservations but generally there's been overwhelming support from that side of the house for president biden's decision interestingly enough when he was vice president all those years ago joe biden attempted to persuade barack obama that there would be no military victory within afghanistan that the u.s. presence there should be sharply reduced he failed to do so but now that he's president he's going to get his own way and significantly as well there are no conditions attached to the step the timeline he's expressed the opinion that there can be no military victory in afghanistan he says the u.s.

2:05 am
reach a new set of shared fundamental principles that reflect an agreed vision for a future of ghana stem a road map to a future political settlement and of course an end to the conflict. is the u.n. this one of the koch conveners still committed to a democratic afghanistan to an afghanistan with freedom of expression and an afghanistan with equal rights for women and the un committed to those 3 weeks we are committed to the people of afghanistan we are committed to ensuring that the gains that have been made or not lost and that is especially true for women in afghanistan they'll be urgent diplomatic efforts now to try and get the taliban to change their mind pakistan will be key is the country which has the most leverage over the taliban in kabul many will be worried and it's worth recalling a letter that the u.s. secretary of state anthony blinken wrote to president garvey at the beginning of

what you want. i mean as we saw last night 24 hours ago people were very angry at number exchanges with the police because they don't want you tonight 6 in 10 pm which is about 4 hours a week and of course a number of shots we're looking at the police the authorities local community leaders are hoping those are scenes that can avoid following the press and frustration at what happened on sunday was will continue to monitor what goes on the book and sent to the island as the hours progress selling fish there for us at the brooklyn central minnesota let's go back now to john hendren who we can get back in touch with him in the john sorry about that before. we were going to talk about really what's been happening in court the testimony so far and what actually reveals about the defense's strategy in the george floyd case. well so he was
2:13 am
a dramatic reversal today on day 12 that's because the prosecution rested its case and the defense began calling its witnesses and one after another they contradicted what we have been hearing for 11 previous days 1st off we had body camera footage of a $29.00 teen arrest of george floyd and that was contrasted with new body camera footage of the fateful may 25th arrest when george floyd at the end there was no longer breathing and famously said i can't breathe and in both cases defense witnesses claimed that george floyd did not cooperate with police and took drugs that were in his possession before being taken by police and then you have this star witness for the defense today and that was very broad the man you saw a little bit earlier saying that he believed that derrick chauvin was using inappropriate holding that he essentially did nothing wrong in kneeling on george
2:14 am
floyd's neck for 9 and a half minutes on the prosecution pushed back on that pointing out that long after george floyd had stopped any kind of resistance to that arrest and after he had even stopped having a polson officer actually checked him derek show of and continued to kneel on george floyd so that might not have gone particularly well for the jury but the theory of the defense is that george floyd did not die because derek show of an old on his neck and that he died in fact from a combination of heart problems and drugs that he had in his system so that's going to be the tact the defense continues to take and so we expect to hear a number of witnesses probably some medical witnesses coming up so what we can expect and cool to the next few days what can we expect. well 1st of all i think we can expect quieter streets around the court at night because last night we had a curfew that ended at 7 and that is about right now and tonight it ends at 7 10 pm
2:15 am
rather and the defense expects to make quick work of this case the judge says they might be done is soon it is thursday they might even take friday off he said and then we can have closing arguments as soon as monday and during the time when the jury is deliberating the judge says they will be sequestered isolated from outside media any contact with anybody until they come up with a verdict the big question is whether derrick show of and himself will take the stand. and minneapolis thanks very much for the update. well still ahead here on al-jazeera iran says it's about to carry out what would be the most significant breach of the 2015 nuclear deal.

winter's not finished as north america these arcs of cloud here are in arctic air actually they're bringing snow and wintry temperatures if you like from the central part of canada into the northern plains of the u.s. that cold air coming always through iowa and eventually we're going to get the cold war meeting up in the southern states snow will fall in montana and then towards colorado it's going to keep going if not enhanced next to so but the big thunderstorms the result of these 2 meetings will be along the southern coast once again possibly farther on their way out during service today so seas doesn't quite change their net of just go on the bit further east into the caribbean to show you what we normally expect the trade winds which temporarily here into the southeast gerry's be come from the east and we get big showers whenever you get this cold air coming of the u.s. so that's what's happening in the leeward islands less so press record has been euro so surface wind from barbados towards st vincent up a clouds so

inequality. let's return to our top story now the u.s. looking to withdraw troops from afghanistan by september the 11th i'm awesome odyssey nonresident senior fellow at the atlantic council on the former a former afghan diplomat joins me now from washington d.c. good to have you with us on the program mr smart thinking is a u.s. withdrawal in september really the best possible option for all of the stakeholders right now. well as you know and you alluded to so while. the americans and the taliban have an agreement which can. total american withdrawal by may 1st just a few days ahead from now and today we've heard from sources in the story that may have been leaked in washington that the president biden intends to make an announcement saying that. he will take american troops out by september 11th 2020
2:20 am
while out we haven't obviously yet has said it yet so we need to wait to see what he actually when he but assuming that that is the case then i think that me the tuller will have to somehow be on board with the decision in order for the deal not to break down and for the country to go back to a state of war and a war footing and so we don't know if the americans. have discussed this. in detail and whether they have an arrangement ok from your experience of dealing with the taliban directly or indirectly as a government official. are they the type of group that could perhaps say ok we'll wait till september or other problems with even the suggestion. if you could question it all depends on how you define the leadership on the mommies and how

unified they can maintain the rank and file of the taliban i think would be fighting for the past 19 years now. we don't know that we don't have enough detail as to what the thinking is both at the leadership level and within the rank and file but having said that the taliban have shown what they are usually unified with their final decisions now we also heard today 'd and later in the day that the tolerable part of the spokesman says that they will continue the fighting they will not participate in any peace conference is because there's one slated for april 24th and istanbul that they will not participate unless all american troops are out so we see some connect here and some confusion that we hope will be resolved in the next day or 2 here we've highlighted i stumble conferences well i mean what concerns to the afghan government do you think have when the u.s.
2:22 am
sort of box out dates to depart i mean they have legitimate concerns about security but according to a senior adviser to the president he says that up to the job of defending themselves. well that's a tough call and have clincher make because if you look at the history if you look at the record in the past few years that really hasn't been the case and unless the american backing critical moment i think said this i don't think that that is the real issue right now the real issue in congress and also be on how to get the peace process moving forward instead of talking about how we can attack and counterattack in this trend or so yes stability and security are important but our confidence has been at war for too long and people have suffered for too long and we all need almost i need to really put all their efforts into the peace basket at this point indeed i think that's the next move everybody is looking for more summit thanks so
2:23 am
much for joining us from washington d.c. nice to have you on the program. russia is being urged to deescalate border tension with ukraine u.s. president joe biden has proposed a summit in the coming months with phantom air putin but russia has already rejected nature's call for an end to a military buildup on ukraine's border but such a bottle has more from paris. unjustified and unexplained was how the head of nato described russia's buildup of troops on its border with ukraine after meeting with ukraine's foreign minister in brussels russia must end this military buildup in and around ukraine stop its provocations on the escalate immediately. russia has deployed naval ships heavy armor and tens of thousands of troops in recent weeks violence is risen between russian backed separatists and ukrainian forces in ukraine's east ukraine's foreign minister said nato must respond to what

he called a threat of war by gathering today we try to avoid the mistake that was made in 2014 when russia was ready to act swiftly and pursue its military goals in crimea and gone bust while our western partners were considering their reactions to what was happening on the ground. russia will not be able to catch anyone by surprise anymore we could labor also discuss the situation with the u.s. secretary of state was on a 3 day visit to proselytise the u.s. will station an extra 500 troops in germany we're seeing unfortunately russia taking very provocative action want to have pride without. the largest concentration. of russian forces one present or different 2014 kremlin officials say the troops are on a training exercise and that ukraine has been acting provocatively some analysts

say vladimir putin is less interested in conflict than in challenging washington where we have seen over the last few months is a breakdown of the u.s. russia and relation seems that by the administration. power and i think putin is basic you trying to die and he's testing the by going to be sufficient to see how far i'd be willing to go and they really are all on russia the white house says u.s. president biden has called russia's leader to urge a deescalation of tensions the kiev the best way to end the conflict with russia would be for nato to fall austrac its request for membership of the alliance sending a clear message to moscow the ukraine sovereignty could not be threatened with such a buckler al-jazeera paris iran says it's starting to enrich uranium to 60 percent purity of what would be the most significant breach of the 2015 nuclear deal that

service the government blamed israel for what it called sabotage and issued this warning i know we will retaliate for the attack on the towns at all levels at the proper time with similar magnitude we won't allow our enemies to reach their political objectives. iran says it will now enrich uranium to 60 percent that's 40 percent higher than it already is and around 56 percent higher than permitted in the nuclear deal but all eyes are on vienna with many sides hoping that despite the incident at natanz. it can still be a breakthrough i said big there on. the caribbean island of st vincent has been rocked by another eruption as volcanic activity threatens water and food supplies 16000 residents have been forced from their homes with experts saying volcanic activity could continue for weeks and the galahad reports. for decades less of free air remain dormant but late last week huge eruption sent ash gas and rocks spewing
