over their wall 2900 protesters and the u.s. through sweeping sanctions on moscow over its role in election interference and hacking russia warns of retaliatory action. a group of political parties from myanmar have joined forces to form a national unity government outside the country as part of the ongoing resistance to military rule hundreds of civilian protests as have been killed since the coup at the start of february the unity government is made up of ethnic minority leaders and it's a promising to anne's people's suffering. joins us now live from bangkok in neighboring thailand scott what war can you tell us about this latest development and what does it mean for protesters are on the ground right now.
11:02 am
paula well i think you could look at the situation that the protesters will be happy with this movie because a sense you what it is it's a parallel government you know there's been a parallel structure made up of a lot of the lawmakers who were ousted in this coup and those who live outside of myanmar that have been in action over the last several weeks if not maybe a month and a half so this is more kind of a formal step by them to form this national unity government and what it is is they are looking for recognition right at this stage they have created this parallel government themselves so they're looking for recognition by parties in their national in the international community that's the kind of political leverage and recognition they need they feel to really fight the joints and the joints power in myanmar right now what does it mean to those protesters on the streets the military still in control of me and most of myanmar so right now what does that mean of those who want to go back out to the streets in protest like we saw 4 or 5 weeks ago that's not necessary going to change because the joint is still in control of
11:03 am
the main cities what's interesting about this unity government and as you mentioned that there will be ethnic participants in the cabinet level there are leaders of the ethnic groups inside myanmar now this is something that's been a challenge for peace in myanmar for decades so the approach to this unity government is to involve all those ethnic groups and this they say the organizers will be the way that they can actually push back and fight the army fight the army politically but it needs to be said a lot of these ethnic groups also have their own armies that have been who have been fighting the central army the tatmadaw in myanmar for decades as well so this is their kind of next step i guess the best way to put it so they can formalize this this parallel government this national unity government and hope that they'll get national recognition to national recognition and they can use that as political leverage but again you know the protest movement will most likely continue the way it has been it has to be good news for them too because this means there's going to
11:04 am
be a more formulated opposition and hopefully they'll get international recognition of this this new government that they have formed parallel government that they have formed case that bring us the latest from bangkok thank you scott. police in the united states are facing more furious protests this time over the fatal she scene of a 13 year old latino boy the incident happened last month but the newly released video from the chicago police department appears to show adam toledo turns officers with his hands in the air before he was shot castro reports the video you're about to see is incredibly disturbing it's 2 30 am and an officer wearing a body camera arrives at a black and latino neighborhood of chicago a police or valences gym had detected gunshots nearby and the investigating officer runs after a person down an alleyway. probably

not but. that person was 13 year old adam toledo chicago police had at 1st called this an armed confrontation with the police claiming the boy had been holding a gun and the video released 17 days later appears to tell a different story as to lead a lays crumpled his empty hands still raised in the hands of position fall next to his body with an earth stay with us they wake their wake. i'm going to start c.p.r. i'm not. at him during his last 2nd of life did not have a gun in his hand. the officer screamed at him show me your hands adam complied turned around his hands were empty when he was shot in the chest at the hands of the officer. it had taken intense public pressure to convince chicago police to release the video toledo's mother had spoken to her son in early april.

good students. are up in the air. the civilian office of police accountability is investigating and the officer identified as eric stillman and obviously shaken immediately after the shooting is now on administrative duties the chicago police department was cited by the u.s. justice department in 2017 for civil rights violations aimed at minorities and a white officer who shot a black man 16 times in 2014 was convicted of murder we live in a city that is traumatized by a long history of police violence and misconduct so while we don't have enough information to be the judge and jury of this particular situation it is certainly understandable why so many of our residents are feeling it all too familiar surge

11:12 am
going on now for around about 6 hours we're still hopeful that there will be sentences you know before the end of the day but i have to remember that you know just a few weeks ago a court case here went on for more than 27 hours that's not expected to happen this time but it does give an indication that the time say can be quite a lastic if they need to be now the activists who are awaiting sentencing who are all arrested just out just almost a year ago in fact and they have been some of them have been on bail 5 of them 2 others have been denied bail including jimmied life he was actually brought to the court from the jail ways now awaiting trial on national security charges and of course that means he's facing the prospect of life in prison on top of whatever sentence he will get here today there have been a wave of prosecutions of calls during the past couple of months since the ending of the process that began in 2019 and those prosecutions have had the effect of

11:14 am
percent that really did set the stage for a dramatic rebound that we've seen so this 18.3 percent there a very large figure was in line with what many economists were expecting now we have to look at this in terms of the context of china getting back to normal life last year we had china close some quite draconian measures to control 19 and because of that we saw this outbreak controlled relatively early compared to other countries from mid last year it started to make up for those losses economically and from september it's odd it had kind of made up for those losses and continue to grow and so we actually saw in 2020 china's economy grew by 2.3 percent and it was the only major economy to do so so that's important but what is key to remember though china's economy economic growth has been robust it has been on even a lot of it is thanks in large part to a strong industrial sector a lot of these exports going to other countries especially those still affected by
