mention when he passed away and how long it took between the time he got injured and the time of his passing these are details that they're being very careful to control that because they're worried about the reaction of the of the people here in chad and specifically in command of the society chad is very divided there you have the rebel up in the north and some of them in the eastern part of the country you have political opposition in the capital itself and then you have the army which is. love to criticize of being very proper lisick so they're trying to maintain that cohesion that's something we heard investment that they're going to try to maintain the stability and because of the nation with the president now. so how about how do we explain the establishment of this military council that's going to be headed in the interim period by the late president's son. one thing we can say is that it is not in the constitution where the constitution says is that in

case in the absence of the president or in case he died which is what happens here then the speaker of the parliament takes charge of the country for 40 days and still the transition is put in place and until elections are held this is what the constitution says but we also heard an announcement on the transitional military council when they announced that the president has passed away we had a statement we heard them saying that they have dissolved the legislative assembly or the parliament and that the speaker no longer hours they also announced that they would dissolve the constitution that constitution which by the way president has played around with quite a bit when he was in power 1st of all by removing presidential term limits which paved the way for him to run for 6 term as well as expanding his powers that constitution has now been sidelined no longer functional we have the military now making the rules as they go. to clear that they are going to set up institutions that will be running the country for the next 18 months and prepare the country for

powell who's a researcher in the center for war and diplomacy at lancaster university he's also the author of france's war is in military intervention and d. call it in africa he's joining us from london thanks so much for speaking to us a lot to talk about here let's 1st talk about this apparent succession battle that is now taking place that how do you explain that the constitution has been suspended and according to the constitution the speaker of parliament is supposed to head the country in any event that something happens but now we know the president debby's son is the interim leader of this military council. right thanks for having me on so there's kind of the important element a kind of stress here is that the decision by the military to put the son as to make him the head of state kind of follows what was expected in the event of debbie's kind of ouster or death for a long time there's been discussion about what would happen if debbie were to die he was the taurus lee kind of in bad health or for

a long time people thought he might be in bad health so the question is would replace and and for several years he's been grooming his son mohammed to take the throne if you would hope that after he died so the fact they suspended the constitution and dissolve the government and the assembly it's not surprising at all i mean that is technically a coup but it is signaling to charity and but also the international community that there is an absolute commitment to regime continuity at the top of the government that also probably includes the level of foreign policy in the region. he said to which they can sustain that is open to interpretation the right but how will those who oppose deputy react to the point of the appointment of his son to the military council. well i mean they're opposed to their hostess father they'll still be opposed to a sign especially coming to power and very extra constitutional through very x. to cuts to the means there is a possibility for widespread protests in germany or elsewhere it's conceivable that the fact the rebellion that was that. perhaps killed that the in that series of

continuity under the leadership of the interim leadership of his son. yeah that's obviously the big question i think the fact that they move so so swiftly to install him as the interim head of state even though again as you mention the constitution does not does not allow for that that sends a very strong message to france and to a child's other international partners including united states that they can expect continuity and i think that's the message they're trying to send whether they can sustain that is another question they have had to at least it was reported 3 days ago that debbie before he died was moving units that he had deployed somali in egypt back to chad to help defend the capital these are some of his best units so if the current interim government has to keep those units in chad for security purposes. then that would disrupt at least in the short term france's and the broader g. 5. counterterrorism efforts in mali a new share. the center was to actually help those efforts or actually serve as a stabilizing force is also
