4:03 pm
the reason why we're here is because it's here that. doesn't ins are going to directly it's alleged offense is supposed to have taken place 2009. government protests here outside the iranian embassy as an ins a go rachleff participated in protests and gave an interview to b.b.c. persian and now 12 years on the iranians have decided to prosecute her for this despite the fact that she's already gone through the system for the other charges which she denied she denies these charges as well but on march the 14th in a 20 minute hearing behind closed doors they. tried her for this offense and have now decided that she will be sentenced to another year in prison i have to say that she's not been ordered back to jail yet so technically she's not behind bars but the other aspect of it is that she's not allowed to leave iran for another year
4:04 pm
lawyer has said that they will be appealing against this verdict a timescale for that legal process hasn't been yet laid out but from here at the iranian embassy i knocked on the door just before we came on and i've submitted a an email with a request for a statement from them but no statement has yet been forthcoming from the embassy here so some of this really about then home because that is the car iraq of husband is very high profile in his campaign to to get his wife released and say to him it's to bring her back a whole mess and surely as there been any reaction from him does he think this is about a process that took place on british soil or is there something else to this. yes but not have been plenty of reaction on this lots of conjecture and suspicion as to exactly what is behind all of this let's go to the reaction 1st of all of richard radcliffe and he has said that he believes that she's being used as

a negotiating tactic by the iranian authorities and he clarified that she hadn't yet been summoned back to actual prison the british prime minister boris johnson has said i don't think that it's rise or told that she should be sentenced to more time in jail it's wrong that she was there in the 1st place and he said that working very hard to secure her release working with our american friends as he described them as well and don't rob who is the british foreign secretary said it was totally inhumane and totally unjustified this decision by the iranian course we continue to call on iran to release nazanin immediately now as far as the why she is that well there are several different stories 1st of all that it's related to an arms deal debts of around 400000000 pounds in order for the chieftain tanks that was made by the previous shah of iran and those tanks were never delivered by britain iran won't sing at least them money back britain the british government has
4:06 pm
explicitly admitted that there is a debt that really does need to be paid the question is how to pay it there are sanctions for example that prevents money being sent in such overt way to iran and the british and iranians haven't yet found a way to have that debt result without falling foul of those sanctions the other aspect is of course just the general state of tension and diplomatic issues that there are between the west and iran as regards sanctions as regards a nuclear deal as regards many many different things ok paul brennan that life president cited the iranian embassy in london thank you paul. iraq such as shortage of hospitals in new delhi is growing more urgent spy the minutes on monday a nation of nearly 1400000000 people registered another record daily riot factions

a nationwide lock turn in bangladesh. they're paying commission is taking a legal action against the pharmaceutical company astra zeneca says the vaccine manufacturers in breach of its contract to supply enough of the covert 19 job the executive branch says the company has not come up with a strategy to ensure the timely delivery of doses will get more now from the tasha butler she joins us live now from paris natasha why is the commission taking legal action against astra zeneca. well they've not actually said you can only imagine it's perhaps to put more pressure on the british swedish pharmaceutical company it is just the latest step in what has been an ongoing saga between astra zeneca and the e.u. commission now the e.u.
4:12 pm
commission says that it's nor ching this legal action because astra zeneca has breached its contract in its eyes it says that it is very it failed to deliver the doses that it had promised in his contract now in the 1st quarter of the year astra zeneca delivered $30000000.00 doses that is a short of the $120000000.00 that the e.u. commission says it had promised in its contract now astra zeneca they haven't reacted to this launch of legal action but in the past what they have said is that their contract only said that they would do everything that they could within their powers and possibilities to deliver the doses that they could when they could and that they weren't fixed on particular doses to particular dates but the u. commission obviously sees things very differently they also say that astra zeneca should have diverted some of the doses that were being produced in the u.k. for the u.k. to the e.u. to make up the shortfall in the e.u. and the trash all the states had back the prior but some concerns about this move
4:13 pm
taking us to seneca courts morkie. yes you member states are backing the e.u. commission's plan but it still takes took some persuasion what we understand is that the commission last week had a meeting with diplomats from most member states to discuss trying to get them on board behind this legal action there were some countries we understand from germany among them who were concerned that such a move at this time just might not be a good idea you have many e.u. countries in the middle of a 3rd wave still battling a high circulation of 1000 astra zeneca resolve to rule one of the use main covert 19 vaccine suppliers and we would want to see that put in jeopardy that is according to some french and german diplomats another $70000000.00 doses for

example are being expected from astra zeneca in the next quarter of the year and also this just adds really to the already shaken and damaged reputation of the astra zeneca vaccine amongst the public in the european union it has been the source and focus of a lot of conflicting messaging from various governments because of issues over for example the blood clots now most governments now saying that the astra zeneca vaccine the benefits certainly outweigh the risks nevertheless though the reputation of this vaccine has been damaged at a time when it is so necessary to try and stop the pandemic in the block. there live from paris natasha thank you. plenty more still ahead on this news hour including palestinians celebrate the removal of barricades and occupies east jerusalem but there are reports of escalating on the rest elsewhere boss family members of the crew of

it's likely to stay that way for years to come rob reynolds al-jazeera los angeles . let's take a little deeper into the issue of race and gender representation in the film industry a study from u.c.l.a. has revealed well historically hollywood has struggled to ignore inch minority success there has been a dramatic turnaround in the past 2 years of the top 185 films released last year minorities accounted for nearly 40 percent of the leading roles tripling the amounts in the past 6 years women soon to fare better than once a film centered around a lead actress have doubled in the past decades and film studios are catering to projects that includes more minority cast members because those films are making more money at the box office get more now from anna smith she's a film critic and the goals of the girls on film podcast she's also the former chair of the film section of the u.k.'s critics circle and joins us from london

great to have you with us on the news are this is being billed as the diversity or scares what do you think this says in your view about the film industry at large is it more diverse than 2 years ago or the jury's more aware that audiences want to stop white men getting all the prizes. i think it's a combination of several things and those are definitely 2 factors i think it's really encouraging there has been a lot more conversation of course in recent years that was the oscars so what campaign which held the oscars accountable for the representation or the lack of it they then kind of opened up the academy membership to a much greater number of people more diverse people more young people and then they also made a few steps in terms of what what you have to do to qualify for an oscar so that's had an effect but i like to think as the host of a feminist film will cost that you know efforts to increase diversity and representation on all sorts of fronts such as times not for example in the me too
4:35 pm
movement have gradually had an effect certainly when i speak to female directors about their work young female directors now a feeling that they're getting opportunities that they weren't getting given in the past or the people the women have for them one getting finally people are sort of being held accountable and saying ok we need to get equal opportunities here and we need even though there is some way to go i feel that you know the finance people are finally backing more diverse selection of filmmakers but there is this i mean the female filmmakers who are making films and making films worthy of awards surely don't want to be given these awards because diversity is the watchwords of the year does it doesn't this year it actually celebrating the diversity rather than just celebrating the fact that the best people 'd in the best films does indeed come out on top. well i would say that i think the standard will that people might think that there's an issue of tokenism here that is far from it i mean every year there
4:36 pm
are so many wonderful women and people of color who are not given a fair chance and it's you know 2 women were nominated next to each other for best director for the 1st time in 93 years so it just shows you know for many years that could have been the case all mall but they just simply weren't being recognized so i really don't think it is a case of tokenism one when you look at the films as well and it's in terms of diversity judas' in the black recite bottom these are race strong quality films that absolutely serve to win it's just that finally from various different races they are being recognized as they should be there in scenes as to how do you think that the wider context of the world that we're living through ny has alter and perhaps the outcome of the oscars because we are in a pandemic not that many people are going to the local movie theaters right now the films certainly me and my father be watching have been on streaming services do you think that's played in so the outcome at all i think it has because the oscars have

been force a change their roles as we have to include films that have gone straight to streaming that would have perhaps been in cinemas otherwise which is a new thing and perhaps a temporary thing but also you know the mood is shifting towards watching more at home and also when you look at a winter like no matter and i think they massively that feels very topical i mean it would be a winner i think in the best of times but i think in difficult times this is a film that speaks to people who haven't challenges it's about community it talks about financial hole shit it's all about a lot of things that feel very common including compassion as was highlighted in our speech ok fantastic to get your thoughts i'm afraid we are out of time but great terry where there's on the news or thank you so much for sharing your thoughts about the oscars this year. well as we were hearing there from joe is all scurry where. i have been told not least for the fact that essentially been ignored in our own country of china to use more amount from beijing. chloe
