recently pushing across says southern states to easy on a mississippi alabama are also seeing some wet weather as we go on through the course of a monday doesn't really improve us rico wanted to choose day with a cat in france sliding right across much of texas. school at ways. this is al jazeera. hello i'm you're watching the news hour from al-jazeera at 1300 hours g.m.t. it will be dominated by the violence and tension in occupied east jerusalem. stun grenades and tear gas to confide inside the mosque compound as israeli forces break up a sit in of palestinian. hundreds of

protesters and some journalists have been injured as israel intensifies its crackdown ahead of a planned jewish nationalist march. and tense scenes as well in. the occupied east jerusalem neighborhood where palestinian families are fighting against forced evictions. and his japanese tennis star says she feels conflicted about the tokyo olympics going ahead by 2nd making the comments as a limping thomas back is forced to cancel a trip to japan. it's just been 4 pm in occupied east jerusalem where al aqsa mosque compound islam's 3rd holiest site has been the scene of a violent israeli crackdown on palestinians let's take you through the pictures 1st
4:02 pm
of all from inside the mosque early monday morning you see it happening israeli forces firing rubber coated steel bullets tear gas sound bombs at palestinian worshippers. and that's the 2nd time actually israeli forces of stormed a mosque since last week then. go outside in and around the compound which actually houses the mosque and again israeli forces are targeting palestinian protesters who were standing guard the tension was already running high ahead of a planned march later on monday by right wing israeli nationalists for an event they call jerusalem. and we've had the latest numbers 2 from the palestinian red crescent more than $305.00 people injured and also that their team was prevented from reaching the
4:03 pm
compound with it so here is the team at this hour the to abraham in ramallah in the occupied west bank palestinian reaction coming up with starting though with our a force that in occupied east jerusalem at damascus gate with the crowds the building there tell us more harry. that's right in fact just 3 or 4 minutes before you came to me it was a big group of palestinian protesters who were down here chanting in the well just beyond damascus gate here and they quickly ran up the stairs it was clear that there was a large contingent of those jerusalem day religious nationalist jewish marches heading in this direction what was interesting is that these are the security forces pretty quickly separated them or at least turned those jewish protesters marches around and prevented them getting access or facing off against this group here is the real key question i think in the coming hours as to exactly how that
4:04 pm
will be managed going forward the police commissioner as late as sunday night was saying that he wanted to see those tens of thousands of marches able to carry out their march when they commemorate the occupation beginning here in east jerusalem what israelis call the unification of jerusalem in 1067 usually tens of thousands marched to the old city including the muslim quarter as tensions are as high as they are at the moment and it's a very beat there's been advice reportedly. from the israeli security establishment not to allow that routes to take place as normal and we wait to see how that will play out because if the these 2 groups do get together in any meaningful way palestinians and right wing israelis on each side it could get very dangerous very quickly harry i believe you said it's about a 15 minute walk from where you are the neighborhood of chef john are can you tell us about the developments there in the last few hours as well with members of the israeli knesset the parliament visiting there. indeed i mean this is
4:05 pm
in some respects a parallel development but in some respects is one of the main drivers of the tension and of the process that we've seen in jerusalem throughout the month of ramadan it's the imminent potential eviction of 4 of the group of families who have been living there since the time that jerusalem was under jordanian control after the creation of the state of israel in 1048 there is a jewish group that claims ownership of that land it's going through the israeli legal system there was supposed to be a decision by the israeli supreme court today whether to hear the appeal of those 4 families or to enforce the eviction that decision was put off for at least 30 days but it hasn't stopped the scenes in shakespeare or where as you say we've seen both right wing israeli politicians far right israeli politicians putting themselves there on another on the opposite side of the road and some of the homes in question
4:06 pm
we've also today seen palestinian israeli politicians members of the hour of joint lesson there have been scuffles between and among them also involving israeli security forces so it remains a potentially dangerous situation there but i think the real focus as the day goes on will be exactly how this jerusalem day march plays itself out in the light of those very violent scenes that we saw from the luxor mosque compound itself earlier on monday. ok harry for that sit tight for now be back with you i'm sure later in the hour the israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu spoke a little bit earlier this is about the events that i like so he was praising police for supporting what he called i just struggled and for up holding law and order haven't. really bush allusion our struggle this taking place in the heart of jerusalem this is not a new struggle this is a struggle between intolerance and tolerance between law breaking and violence and law and order the struggle is not new because it has transpired over jerusalem and
4:07 pm
the heart of jerusalem for centuries since the rise of the monotheistic religions for years one side ruled and excluded the 2 others and sometimes they changed them and the same thing happened you can say that in the long history of jerusalem only under israeli sovereignty since 1967 we are witnessing and continuous stable secure period in which we are working to ensure freedom of worship and tolerance for all. let's take it to ramallah in the occupied west bank now need to ram reporting from there tell us about reaction from palestinian politicians and what they want done at this point. we've spoken to several officials from the palestinian authority including one p.l.o. executive committee member and now says that they are a bit disappointed because the international community's reaction to what's going on in jerusalem is not as strong as it should be to kind of curb is ready by the
4:08 pm
nations of the ground and this official has also told us that he believes that condemnations are not enough and that the international community needs to come up with strong reactions with. what's happening in jerusalem and he believes that this is not on the holes the way all of what he called his political failure and he's trying to make the escalations and tensions escalate on the ground to kind of cover for what the official the palestinian official called his political crisis now we've heard also from the palestinian authority who says that from the spokes person of the palestinian presidency who says that the palace that the israelis are challenging the international community and also the new administration in the us they've called for the u.n. security council to be held as well as the arab league and they are saying that they're doing as much as they can do but if you ask people in the street they would
4:09 pm
tell you that the palestinian authority can and should do more and what about people in the street have there been any protests or anything there today quite often we see these sorts of solidarity moments. they've been protesting over the past few days not just city but all across the occupied west bank where in nablus and we've seen protests in city centers and we've seen calls from palestinians to go to the confrontation points any of the israeli military checkpoints with and try and what we see that anger many palestinians here not aware of using the word solidarity because they believe that this is also their cause and that they are defending it as much as they can but let's remember that not many of them have the ability to go inside jerusalem because they have to cross israeli military checkpoints and they can't cross them without a prior israeli military permit which is why they're doing what they can here to
4:10 pm
voice their good and they want to show the palestinians their fellow palestinians and them that they are with them even if they kept busy with his you know abraham reporting from ramallah the occupied west bank thank you she raised the point there about the palestinians request for u.s. action so let's check in with our white house correspondent kimberly how could i know it's only what 10 points 9 the answer probably no official reaction yet but this will be one of the 1st times that this new administration is dealing directly with something happening in the occupied territories and you know a test i guess for how different their approaches. there's no question that the white house has sought to avoid up to this point any sort of involvement in the what is now escalating tensions to this point what it has done is really focused on domestic issues but the events of the weekend have changed all of that we know that the national security advisor jake sullivan called his counterpart his
4:11 pm
israeli counterpart over the weekend and what he was doing was essentially calling for calm saying that the united states will remain actively engaged in the days to come but this may not be enough to satisfy some members of the democratic party president biden's own political party because we know over the weekend that some far left progressive politicians have been pushing for the white house to get more actively engaged so we are watching very carefully to see what more the white house might say so far it has left much of this to the state department to handle but we are going to watch carefully as jen psaki hold her daily press briefing to see what more the white house may say in terms of a comment ok give us a shot then later on kimberly if and when you hear anything more from the white house thank you. now as we've been reporting we need to go deeper on this because one of the issues behind recent unrest is the long running legal battle over shakes
4:12 pm
palestinian families are fighting against being forcibly evicted from their occupied east jerusalem neighborhood and making way for israeli settlers dozens of families actually settled there back in 1956 they were among hundreds of thousands of palestinians expelled from their towns in the 1948 war you hear that referred to often by the palestinians as the nakba the catastrophe but a decade later the families became protected tenants there was a deal with the jordanian government which controlled the area but then that was voided because jordan lost control in 167 that was when israel occupied the land there's been a series of court cases that have ruled in favor of a settler organization that seeks to make the area completely jewish back to occupied east jerusalem to talk to you as director of palestinian group called grassroots could stank you for your time what is the situation right now because i believe there was a delay 30 days and we're waiting to hear maybe from the attorney general of israel
4:13 pm
as to what might happen next. yes indeed that has been fun stuff that this isn't on the on the court case and in an attempt by the israeli occupation authorities to use this time take this sounds to way to florida that uprising basically took on down and sort of people at suppliers of the family and that presence in the neighborhood to decide he is so that they can evict and expel these families from their homes quietly nonetheless people here are aware of this this is a this is a decision made by the book and we know these tricks these are old tricks so people who get out of that system and people here know that they need to be present in the set in order to. defend these homes and support these families. right now is it at least including also members of knesset. in the shuttle today it's looked at it and i think also benghazi it have been in and
4:14 pm
provocative so-called visit but is that men who have been prevented from entering the neighborhood so even though that decision has been postponed that case is still very much a life yet so who can the palestinians or who can defend the palestinian cause in this case because you've got the israelis who believe they've got the law on their side and they also as i said to a guest earlier they use force as well when they want to waken the palestinians turn here. well i think it would be very naive then also very dangerous to believe that the israeli courts and the israeli court system can give justice to any and they are the rivals as well as they are the judges so this definitely fighting the legal case is the only tool one of the only tools the families have and that's why they have been doing this it's been giving them time more than anything else but people know and the families of know that if we want to defend and protect these
4:15 pm
homes we need popular presence we need the people who have been visiting said bending and stepped up with the families expressing their very full awareness that if today it is families tomorrow it's any of that family again this is not just one case happening out of context many families the foot have been expelled many will be expelled if we don't stand together i wonder if i could ask you about what's happened out a lot as well today the violence that we saw inside and outside the mosque what are your fears about how that could escalate further with the jerusalem day much later on when i'm speaking to you somebody will sort out just outside of the mask gate i just moved away from damascus gate because settlers and to me out i think in numbers even though they would expect it to arrive that much itself by c.p.m. there have been that have been some discussions about changing that out of this modest or not so we're not sure yet but i can tell you that many settlers have been
4:16 pm
fasting need by. as i was sitting here so what we expect is what happens every year when this march takes place settlers will be marching band saying singing attacking the army will be defending them the army will be open i think palestinians will be attacking palestinians so there will be violence and. we'll wait and see how things developed it's almost 5 now and we'll see what happens. thank you so much for your time we really do appreciate it thank you very much 60 minutes past the news hour here's what's coming up iran condemning an attack on its consulate in the iraqi city of karbala after protesters set fires over the killing of a prominent activist and one of the most successful vaccination programs one of the longest lock downs as well as more restrictions are being lifted in england and in sports a doping scandal hits one of horse racing's most famous events and is along at

about 10 to the hour with your sports news. well iran's foreign ministry has strongly condemned an attack around its consulate in karbala this is in iraq sunday protestors in that city targeted iran after an anti government activist was shot dead in an apparent execution supporters of the set fires around the iranian consulate they suspect iranian backed fighters of being behind the shooting and he was killed close to his home by unknown gunmen in the early hours of sun. the islamic republic of iran strongly condemns the writer in its diplomatic posts in iraq it hopes that within the framework of the $961.00 convention iraq carefully fulfills its commitments regarding the protection of iran's diplomatic locations last night the iranian

foreign ministry submitted a letter of protest to the iraqi embassy in tehran. it was one of more than 30 activists who've been killed in iraq since the beginning of large anti-government protests going back to october of 2019 so wonderful scene as a report now from karbala. that agonizing away to put a body of a loved one this is the family of a was in the a well known organizer in iraq's anti-government protest movement he was shot dead of the night before just outside his home in iraq's southern city of karbala he had his mother told al-jazeera he had received numerous threats from paramilitary groups backed by iran the militias are everywhere in the streets they have a list which includes the names of all the activists they will kill them one by one today they killed my son and soon they'll kill enough of the funeral procession arrived in the scorching afternoon heat their religious punctuated with desperate
4:19 pm
cries for survival. the parties are killing us screamed the man who once stood by you hop side in cabinets protest squares demanding change but is anyone listening inside the habs family said their final goodbye their anger directed at both the killers and the government who failed to protect him are looked at with we don't trust the government and we don't trust this political process if there is to be justice there should be an international investigation he is one of 34 activists assassinated since protests 1st began in october 21000 according to iraq's human rights commission a 3rd were killed after a new government was formed in may 2020 promising to end impunity when prime minister most the fall of kabul may came to power almost a year ago he promised the rain and was ruled that acted outside of the state's control and to bring those responsible for the that the protesters and activists to
4:20 pm
account but only a handful of iran's. has been made and no one has been a victim and so the killings and the funerals go on the protestors drove body to calabar central square once packed with proud to be ailing for a cause but after the movement crumbled amid brutal repression they mostly just gather to mourn the last few here dare to speak on camera in fear they might be next some expect violence to further flare ahead of elections. these assassinations don't come out of nowhere they are organized it's linked to the elections that have been set for next october and all these politicians are scared i think the october protestors will compete for their power to bring about change much more they're targeting the activist today have paid the price. the prime minister promised justice and ordered and wiring but none of these investigations
4:21 pm
have borne fruit in the past leaving little hope for accountability in the future. so wonderful team with that report from kabul she's now back in our baghdad bureau to bring us up to date on this one and it was the man at the end of your report who said all of this is about the election the election in october and how all of that folds into what we're seeing now iranian influence so many things there. where protests are planned again for today. where i was and it was assassinated as well as in other cities including back that to protest not just this but the series of us nations and killings that have been taking place ever since anti-government protests 1st began in october 2900 just last night there was another attempted killing of a local journalist who is now in critical condition in the hospital treated for those injuries so there is
4:22 pm
a general outrage at the government for failing to bring those killers to account. for failing to reign in these armed groups that are backed by iran that operate with complete impunity and if we look to similar assassinations that have happened in the past it's extremely difficult for the state institutions to really identify the perpetrators because 1st of all the ones who actually carry out the killings are usually low level operatives and even if there are arrested it's very difficult to establish a link with whoever gave the order and then there is the 2nd unit that these armed groups have actually not just they're not just operating in this environment of impunity but they have also to some extent penetrated state institutions they have penetrated the security apparatus of the judiciary which means that it's very difficult for the state even of the best of intentions to bring these killers to account the investigators who are charged with looking into these cases may receive
4:23 pm
threats themselves threats to their own lives to their families and this is why even if there are investigations that are an ounce even if people are sometimes arrested we really hardly ever see any convictions coming out of this and that's why there is this fear that these kind of assassinations may further increase as we lead up to the elections because of course the objective of these armed groups is to undermine any protest leaders or civil activists run in the elections to discourage them to create an atmosphere of fear really ahead of the vote in october simona 14 reporting from baghdad thank you at least 25 people have been killed after a bus hit a landmine in afghanistan this was on the kabul kandahar highway in province local officials say women and children are among the victims and separately there have been reports of at least 20 soldiers being killed in

why really no one told the students all the hospitals are pretty bad you know they really appreciate her and luckily fortunately i just bought the bed on one shot. the government has recruited hundreds of former army medics to help but it's coming under intense public criticism for his handling of the situation so far. many wondering why a country wide lockdown has not been imposed lichened early stages of depend demick leaving local governments to impose their own restrictions new delhi has announced its lockdown will be extended for a 2nd time now to may 17th the metro service has been suspended and people are only allowed out doors for basic necessities i decided to return home a 1000 kilometers away from the capital me up there with him and. i work for a financial company that is now shut down because of the pandemic i have no choice but to go back to my village here the situation is very bad we will be safer there that's the main reason we're going back. india is the world's leading producer of

al-jazeera. frank assessments of the government wants one exactly how to. and one measure of their taking for the situation might not be repeated again and in-depth analysis of the day's global headlines inside story. on the news here at al-jazeera our top story is all out of occupied east jerusalem . more than 330 people have been wounded in the latest outbreak of violence in and around a lot so mosque compound israeli security forces fired tear gas and stun grenades of palestinian protesters who had stones and other objects.
4:33 pm
earlier israeli security forces charged inside the mall so it's understood palestinian wash it was staging a sit in they say they want to guard the mosque ahead of a march by right wing israeli nationalists for the event they call jerusalem day. and the content seems to ensure the occupied east jerusalem neighborhood where palestinian families are fighting against forced evictions israeli forces are pushing back protesters and blocking their movements. with us from west to roost on now is the editor in chief of the jerusalem post great to have you with us we heard from the israeli prime minister a little bit earlier who spoke in quite broad terms about a struggle for the heart of jerusalem and the fact that it's not a new struggle all of which is true and still trying to get an idea of why this level of force was used today not just outside but inside. well imagine a scenario that there wasn't there weren't any rocks thrown or scenario there
4:34 pm
wasn't a mob that was rioting or a scenario that a jewish israeli driver who was driving just outside lion's gate outside the old city of jerusalem was in stone didn't there was an attempted lynching on his life or it's of all of that wasn't happening there wouldn't have been any need for any force right israel for. the 67 when it liberated east jerusalem and reunited this city has allowed 3 prayer for muslims and the temple mount that's never been a problem but if there's violence and if rocks are thrown down to the western wall plaza and if drivers are lynch's are made and tempted on their lives or force needs to be responded to and there needs to be a reaction so people can be defended and protected proportional folse i mean if there is false from the israelis that leaves $300.00 plus palestinians injured that's not a proportional response. well i think you also dozens of israelis have been injured i would recommend going into just some of the wire services i'm sure it'll just you
4:35 pm
have x. destroyers photos and just see the buckets of rocks these are just you know small little pebbles like you would skip across a lake back home these are massive boulders and stones that they prepared and threw over it at forces at prayer room where is jewish worshipers down at the western wall plaza just full of the temple mount the al aqsa mosque this could have gone completely differently but instead people had an interest to escalate tension to create some violence to cause some damage and unfortunately what has happened is there is this violence and there's this escalation i'm glad to see that these renewed police now has just decided moments ago that the parade the flag parade on drusilla which marks the liberation of jerusalem back in mensa 67 is not going to go through the muslim quarter through to what's known as the damascus gate but is instead going to go to the shop again this is an attempt to deescalate that's a smart move by the israeli police but it needs to be met with on both sides right and you can't expect that there's just violence from one side and there is no it works thoughts what about paypal and this is a you could call it
4:36 pm
a separate issue but it's certainly giving rise to some of the violence and that's the issue is happening in the in the neighborhood checked out now there is a 30 day pause. rulings there while we wait to hear from her any attorney general what meantime members of the knesset are going there and from the pictures we say provoking people there as well i go back to the point about proportions and how the how how how is that day escalating as well. you look shakespeare i was there isn't a couple hours there earlier today it's truly a human tragedy right unfortunately you look at this is our palestinian arab families that 99 in the 1948 war of independence left or had to flee their homes in other parts of the of what was then known as palestine before the establishment of the state of israel and then jordan put them into this land where they've been built homes in the 1950 s. but it turns out that this land is actually owned by jews right so it became
4:37 pm
a legal battle that started in deep factoring in the 1980 s. but without getting into the history of it all it's tragic that people might have to leave their homes once again i think that israel has a responsibility to try to find a solution to the situation whether it's some illegal machine of sorts or some sort of compensation whatever it might be but definitely this is a problem needs to be addressed and it's good to see that they've delayed the court decision so that they can try to find some sort of compromise but i think that this is again this is a responsible decision but you have a legal process that's moving forward at the same time to have this violence all violence is not the solution to any bigger right what we need is a some sort of dialogue what we need is responsible government what we need are responsible people and unfortunately for the time being we don't yet have that and that's something that needs to change can we put this in the can you put this in the context for me everything all of this is broad but is ready politics the fact that there is still a process of actually trying to form an israeli government after what is it 4
4:38 pm
failed elections 04 hung the actions if you want to call it that and and prime minister netanyahu is still sort of hanging on to of leadership and get all of this is happening at the same time. never dull moment in israel but i think you're right that this it kind of ties into the bigger picture you know i don't think that it's a guy who wants violence in east jerusalem i don't think that he wants you know clashes on the streets of israel's capital but i think that what this does potentially do is it shows the israeli electorate at the time that the other side his political opponents are trying to form a coalition that maybe they're trying to spread a narrative potentially that in a time you know it's orders that without any time you know you're to see what's happening because he may be departing there's violence then you need him to keep security and stability then you need him as the world starts to condemn israel i don't think that's necessarily going to be enough to stop this new government from coming together but by the way what's happening in jerusalem also shows the complexity in that in that complicated reality when you put together
4:39 pm
a government that's made up of right left which support by an israeli or a party that rahm islamic party led by a bus months or what happens if this jerusalem situation again plays out in a few months from now how does this government which is a kaleidoscope of israeli ideologies and manage this situation will have the right flank of this government will want to fix those arabs from their home you'll have the left wing flank that want to not do anything you know have the arab party on the outside which they will need their support to pass legislation existing in power which was if you do anything and we topple your government so reality in the middle east tends to be much stronger than any type of political formation that you try to create it just shows the complexity of the reality that we live in especially with the political instability currently and as for. as the editor in chief of the tourism post thank you for your time we appreciate it. thank you. we're turning to the pandemic now and
