and called up about 5000 reserve soldiers has also been firing more rockets into israel all up the israeli airstrikes and missile strikes sorry have killed at least 26 palestinians 9 children as well we've seen funerals being held this tuesday morning israel says it was retaliating to a barrage of rockets from hamas and its allied factions giving rise to all of this of course was monday's violence in occupied east jerusalem when israeli forces stormed the mosque compound and the mosque itself hundreds of palestinians were wounded some were hit by rubber bullets in the eyes so we're going to get an update on what's happening this tuesday we've got media bring him in ramallah in the occupied west bank we've got harry forsett in occupied east jerusalem i want to start though with harry's report on the overnight escalation. for days the question is hung over the simmering city would monday jerusalem day 2 israelis marking the start of israel's occupation of east jerusalem be the day of definitive violent

eruption as the hours tick by the answer came repeatedly grimly in the affirmative at 6 o'clock as threatened hamas launched a long range rocket attack on jerusalem's outskirts. and by nightfall it was counting a growing number of dead including children as the israeli military struck gaza one blast in the northern city of beit hanoun killed 9 people including 3 children and assad let it out that the children 8 months old were killed mohammad who is getting married 5 days after eat was killed how is this a children's fault that girls between the ages of 7 and 9 died how is this their fault we were just sitting outside the house waiting for the call to prayer from us military sources told us they believed israel was targeting a palestinian islamic jihad fighter who they said had earlier fired an anti-tank missile at an israeli jeep narrowly missing its civilian owner. the

women holding out that began here with simmering tensions has spread those tensions spreading into truly dangerous territory now deep into the night waves of rockets continued to be fired from gaza at the locks a mosque the confrontations flared again setting a tree alight a violent day over dangerous days still ahead. sorry for so what that report is not damascus gate in occupied jerusalem as you were last night harry it's just incredible to see how relatively normal it looks behind you now. yes i think here in occupied east jerusalem things definitely have diminished in intensity we're in the last day or 2 of ramadan we've seen these tensions building and building and building and now they seem to have switched very much to what we're seeing coming into and out of gaza in terms of what the israeli ordinance is
1:07 pm
doing inside gaza we've had confirmation that 3 islamic jihad fighters have now been killed in the latest there strike in a very heavily residential built up area of gaza city palace an islamic jihad confirming that themselves we're also hearing from the factions that attacks on such residential areas will be met by an increase of range of the rockets that have been coming out in wave after wave through this morning from gaza most of them have been concentrating on the envelope around gaza itself the israeli areas around gaza $31.00 israelis injured in one barrage attacking the city of ashkelon and so there is a potential for more longer range rockets now and of course the longest range of all that we've seen in this escalation has been the initial barash on jerusalem
1:08 pm
itself which has led to this very major military operation coming from israel and one that would only increase i think you said at the end of your report harry probably more violence that come in the days ahead and now the israeli defense minister is sort of making it official with this call up of up to 5000 soldiers. yes they are clear that this will be an intense day of fighting at least the israeli defense minister benny gantz says that yes an extra $5000.00 troops are being called up to be deployed there's also a continuing delay to what was going to be a major military exercise that was all points to israel wanting to carry out a major and extended military response to what took place emanating from gaza that hamas said was in response itself to the scenes that we saw on monday morning inside iraq so before we go away entirely from the
1:09 pm
situation in israel and focus entirely on gaza it's also worth noting the kind of unrest that we've seen in palestinian israeli towns and mixed towns there was the death of one palestinian israeli man in demonstrations and protests last night it appears he may have been shot by a jewish residence in lourdes. and the israeli president driven rivlin has been appealing to what he calls israeli arabs saying that they should not be held captive neither jews nor arabs by the people he referred to as the terrorists involved in this escalation so there are concerns that this is a spread despite the relative calm in jerusalem today that this could be a spreading issue of unrest and violence across israel thank you very force that from damascus gate in occupied east jerusalem over to ramallah now need to abraham our correspondent there on the occupied west bank it is the same
1:10 pm
cycle that we see every time needed the rockets from hamas the strike from israel which is always a bigger in proportion what does hamas say about keeping up the fire from its territory because this is the kind of thing which keeps the cycle going. yes and for hamas as far as they're concerned they were saying that israel has been besieged compound and they would not be remanded if they wouldn't be deterred unless they are met with force of course there are many palestinians who are arguing against that they say that always israel would have the upper hand when it comes to the military power and eventually lots and lots of casualties would be suffering from the palestinian side and not necessarily as much from the israeli side and this is why we've seen many palestinians calling for popular uprisings using stones or protesting near confrontation points in the occupied west bank to
1:11 pm
kind of show to the world what injustices palestinians have been ongoing or living under so that there are more calls on tuesday by many palestinian protesters they want to go to court for the asian point already we've seen one person seriously injured and who are many of bethlehem in the confrontations i'm going with these great even to. what sort of position then. is the palestinian authority and where you are in ramallah because as soon as the focus which is to gaza it becomes a hamas issue doesn't it becomes a mouse versus israel is what is the palestinian authority doing and saying. in general the palestinian authority huge when it condemned the attacks on gaza on the firing of the rockets and it tries to kind of take a more diplomatic approach which is why the palestinian president has called for the arab league's meeting and the u.n. security council's meeting but if you asked people in the street they would tell
1:12 pm
you that they don't believe that these meetings would yield any results if you ask people know and love for example they don't even know many might not even know that there is such a meeting that it's being held today a 1st for many palestinians they have stopped even asking where the arab leaders are because most would tell you they know that they are on their own but as far as the palestinian authority is concerned they are condemning these latest escalations and they're saying that this is netanyahu has a way of exploiting his political failure by escalating the situation in jerusalem the palestinian president has said that the flags will be flied at half mast mourning that those who were killed in gaza and that all celebrations forwarder and footage would be counseled ok that is neda made abraham live from ramallah in the occupied west bank cities me now later on tuesday we've got the arab league and the

investor who desecrates our capitol in washington a growing number of democrats in congress are pressuring biden to be more engaged and even the u.s. domestic politics are fascinating because some democrats in the senate and even more so in the house of representatives are very much against what the israelis are doing and are saying still vocalise it's going to be a very difficult balancing act for the. president biden had hoped to keep his focus in the early months of his presidency on domestic affairs things such as the roll out of the cove in $1000.00 vaccine and the economy but it's becoming increasingly clear that he now could be facing his biggest foreign policy crisis of his presidency and might not be able to keep the u.s. on the sidelines much longer gabriels andro. washington joining us today from occupied east jerusalem is. a palestinian israeli member of
1:16 pm
the knesset leader of the party we thank you for your time today as i was saying to our correspondent in ramallah before this is the cycle isn't it this what is happening right now in gaza particularly is something that could have happened 51015 years ago do you see any way of ending it this time. well what's happening exactly now was. prime minister benjamin netanyahu to keep himself in power and sort of this serious political process he found himself in now and in order not to lose control not to lose his seat does the prime minister really is what is ready to do anything so all of this election that we are seeing here could leave political targets from it that he holds and he is ready to do everything himself work including all of this massacres that will go on you see in gaza in the west bank. that tax on the people praying in lock someone
1:17 pm
imagine estate. tax its residents its citizens while they are. in a mosque so what's happening here is a clear political decision that he is not responsible for in order to serve for what is going to do all this just dilution this is part of the cycle then as well that a prime minister or particularly mr netanyahu makes himself look strong and the israeli. people respond positively to that. unfortunately because of the jewish society it is that it is such a minister and society anything when it gets to to security or what they view the security measures this stop thinking logically and then the sucking up about is ryan and thomas as if that was to metric size you know imagine the gaps empower between
1:18 pm
a small organization like hamas and israel one of the most powerful states all over the world and it's rather not was attacking us up and talking all the time and there's a lot of the media as if that are 2 separate sides now what's happening now we are seeing in another time massacres in gaza. it's escalating so unfortunately we might see also this horrible scenes madly armed forces at that the palestinians all over like what happened yesterday for example inside the green light city where adults and jews are living together yesterday no but a city and that would suit their ears that went out to bring their voice loud i guess what's happening in jerusalem and against that that on gaza. jewish settlers and law decides to shoot for citizens and kills one of them shouted most isone a young palestinian man was shot but is set up in this city and now he is having
1:19 pm
all the political support from all of that right wing pockets of the extreme right wing but it's as if this step that was defending himself. you would reasonably expect then that this will continue given that the israeli defense minister is approved they call up of more soldiers and said that the strikes can continue what could be done to stop it now to to to break the circuit here who usually helps intervene between hamas and israel can it happen again this time what should happen in my view is that all of the graphics don't have the international relations was this dead. should these do something when the palestinian people is being killed people are getting killed were they are right i think massacres in gaza massacres in the west bank the people the international. the.

israel the sexual behavior must stop by listing is going to give you all that suffering this israeli aggression and this is radio question what's happening is really unbelievable you are having. but the thing is are at the end but i'm there. everybody in the world is did it was just you know this is something natural i've taken for granted you patience is a good do your worst act of violence but i still have been suffering from this violence for decades and it must stop some of the head from the blood we appreciate your time thank you so much just a quick live look at gaza now 20 past one in the afternoon looks quiet stars in it but we have seen the telltale signs in the sky the white smoke of rockets being fired or coming. and as we said with these ready defense minister
1:21 pm
saying or approving continued aerial strikes you could only imagine that will carry on we'll keep an eye on the live shot of gaza and bring you more updates from there and from jerusalem occupied east jerusalem throughout this broadcast. a developing story out of russia this tuesday at least 8 people most of them students have been killed in a school shooting in the southwestern city of cazan at least 20 wounded as well local media reporting one suspect a 19 year old has been arrested. because many witnesses it described hearing explosions as well such attacks are rare in russia but incidents have been rising usually involving students. there was one explosion maybe 2 it was strong we jumped up and thought it was a truck and we heard a lot and ran out keeping an eye on the situation from our london broadcast center
1:22 pm
is andrew symonds bring us up to date. well this whole affair happened in cars around which is the capital of the tatarstan region it's about 725 kilometers from moscow now one person a 19 year old it's said attacked a school certainly had one rifle and another gun the scenes were really very dramatic disturbing images playing out on social media 2 of the children jumped from the 3rd floor of the 4 story building and we're getting a figure an official figure as you've already reported of 8 dead that's apparently one teacher and 7 children there obviously from the images you can see these children are young and they are they were they were running in total
1:23 pm
panic it would appear that was automatic gunfire the 19 year old has been arrested on the scene he was apparently manhandled and held down now on social media he apparently announced this attack whether it was before or after is unclear a picture has been posted of an individual wearing a red mask apparently with a phone whether that's him or not it's unclear as i say social media reporting most of the facts although rostam many account of the governor of this state of this region has been giving the information earlier there were reports of 11 dead it is likely that the casualty figure could rise and what action has been taken by authorities there and are. well very quickly there was
1:24 pm
a statement from dmitri peskov the spokes person for the kremlin and he is saying that the president has ordered the victor solitude of the national guard the head of the national guard to actually immediately look at new regulations governing the types of weapons that can be held by civilians because this 19 year old apparently hand a certificate to have a firearm now apparently this is used in these rural areas for hunting rifles but there was a specific reference in vladimir putin's order that he wants regulations on the types of rifle used assault rifles have to be absolutely banished some suggestion there that he had a look elsewhere that this 19 year old had 2 weapons one hunting gun possibly it could have been a kalashnikov it could have been an automatic rifle and another weapon so yes there
1:25 pm
is a grave concern about how many guns are in circulation and certainly with the young people like this no motivation we've heard of whatsoever yet all of these as being called by the authorities a terrorist but don't read much into that no motivation however ok thank you andrew symonds in london we will continue the conversation with fred we're moscow correspondent for the christian science monitor just picking up on what andrew was talking about there fred that's interesting in an obvious self that the kremlin seems to have reacted so quickly i think when we hear of school shootings usually it's something out of the united states where nothing changes here the kremlin moves incredibly quickly. yeah well of course it's tremendously shocking events in russia there have been a few of them over the years but it's pretty rare and especially because this clearly seems to be now an american style mass shooting
1:26 pm
because in russia we have had terrorism at school sieges who's motivations were ethnic or religious terrorism this apparently is not. such an event it seems to have been just one shooter even though there were earlier fairly confident reports that there had been 2 it's rather typical you know this kind of confusion. but there was one person former student of that school apparently so it seems to fit the profile of an american style shooting where. stressed or. mentally disturbed individual goes on a rampage for reasons that are not clear certainly not political ethnic or religious in their motivation. so. it's
1:27 pm
pretty pretty serious thing it's all russians talk. you know the news programs are leading with it. and there's an awful lot of confused still confused reporting going on but i think that this is the sort of thing that's so rare in russia that it does provoke a lot of soul searching. which as you said in the united states so routine that people just almost shrug it off any significance sorry to interrupt you fred any anything in the you can tell us actually about the region i think you know russia such a huge country we don't hear much about places outside of moscow st petersburg what about cousin. because tucker stand it's a republic you know russia has 20 ethnic republics as well as about 60 regions and so the person who runs that republic is called the president. not the governor and he took our stand is

vaccines like pfizer and astra zeneca so that it can produce them at a much lower cost but the indian government helped develop the bought a biotech vaccine and it hasn't shifted the patient for that without the manufacturers but it has huge capacity because it makes 60 percent of all the vaccines in the world which is why delis leader is asking the government to now open it up allow more manufacturers to make these 2 vaccines because at the current rate he said that it would take more than 2 years for all indians to be vaccinated strawberry thank you elizabeth per annum giving us that perspective on 2 and a virus from new delhi. some good news out of the u.s. where regulators have approved finds a biotech's corona virus vaccine for use on children as young as 12 most covered 19 banks seems worldwide have only been authorized for adults the head of the european medicines agency is also said the job could be approved for 12 to 15 year olds as

early as this month. well the world health organization says the elderly in those most at risk globally should be vaccinated before children that w h o director followed canada's authorization of the fines a biotech jab for all its citizens over the age of 12000000 the month in march mcdonough began a study in the united states with scientists trying to find out how safe and effective the in occupations are for children who rarely develop severe forms of code 19 and deaths from the disease are unusual a u.k. trial of the astra zeneca vaccine on children aged 6 to 17 was paused in april due to possible very rare links to blood clots but we're going to put all this in perspective with dr peter drawback now is an infectious disease global health specialist joining us from oxford in the u.k. today let's just start with the fact that this is really good news is the fact that and it's not just the united states as we said canada as well and i'm sure the europeans will follow suit as well this can be another major step for the whole
1:38 pm
world really. that's right kemal thank you for having me this is really exciting news it comes on the back of a trial with about 2200 children 12 to 15 and if found results as we've been seeing with the pfizer vaccine through extremely safe extremely effective very strong immune response which suggests that vaccinated children that should reduce the risk of onward transmission and even though children have a low risk of dying from cobe it we still see about one percent of children this age group with copd who do get hospitalized there is the risk of long coated and up to one in 10 children and so there are still really important reasons to vaccinate children on top of that there's a massive potential population benefit as older adults have been vaccinated in the u.s. and in other countries we've started to see that the share of infections among particularly older children rising we've seen outbreaks in schools and it seems for us in camps
1:39 pm
in so this is a really important next step in terms of the population level trying to reach herd immunity and further driving down infection rates great news then for schools potentially isn't it because the disruption for children not going to school because of as you said the risk of trans transmission i mean this has been something which unfortunately had to get used to. that's right i mean in the u.s. right now about one in 3 children of this age group are still not going to school and of course in many other settings schools abbreviated children are having to wear masks all of that stuff can go away and so you know children face tremendous stress reactions over the last year and a half in so this is an important step on the path back to normality what do you know. i don't know if this is something you cannot say but about the issue of side effects for children i'm just thinking about adults who've had. their shots but shots and have had you know any varying number of side effects some of them just had a little bit of a sore arm a lot of people felt really really ill for quite a few days now children coping with that is
1:40 pm
a lot more difficult. yes so we should 1st maybe try to differentiate the kind of mild or minor side effects soreness of the armed fevers feeling out of sorts for a couple of days with flu like symptoms from the more severe side effects that we've heard about with some other vaccines and so particular with pfizer we've seen very very very rare severe adverse events and that was true also in this trial children 6 dreamily say so sure there are going to potentially be some side effects we have seen that actually amongst children and the rates of fever after vaccination is a little bit higher than that for adults and so that's something that needs to be factored in but those are not dangerous things those are inconveniences and still the benefits of vaccinations including for this age group far outweigh any risks that we're aware of just going to get them past the needle 1st of all don't shoot up to pay to try that joining us from outside today thank you thank you. well life in the united states is beginning to return to normal in some parts of the effects
1:41 pm
of the pandemic gradually subside fortune that means crime is returning to its usual level as well and even getting worse a spate of mass shootings over the past few days is fueling fears of a so-called coded crime wave and again i reports from miami. there were 9 my shooting is over the weekend in the u.s. according to the gun violence archive that was split 6 dead at a family birthday party in colorado springs in new york's times square a 4 year old child was caught in crossfire as that city deals with the proliferation of weapons taking guns off the street new york city had it on the army great over the last 2 years and it's time now that we have lots of points about 2028 was a year dominated by the deadly covert $900.00 pandemic but despite lockdowns and less outdoor activity major cities soar spikes in murder rates places like los angeles chicago and new york all recorded surges of at least 30 percent and experts
1:42 pm
