2:05 pm
president said that flags would be flying at half mast to could to mourn the death of palestinians who were killed in the gaza strip is said that all celebrations for at the would be cancelled but as many palestinians in the street would tell you this is not enough to calm the situation down and to fly the israelis we've seen many protesters on monday calling up. to respond to the latest is very violations there are many palestinians who believe that only israel would only understand the language of force of course there are those who believe that an uprising a popular uprising when that is not armed would be better because israel ultimately has the upper hand when it comes to military power but in general the palestinian authority has been calling for the united nations security council the arab league though to get into the shin of islamic cooperation to hold and to have more

condemning remarks and even we've talking to someone from the palestinian authority from the p.l.o. executive committee who says that the international community's condemnations we're a bit too soft on israel and they're not going to be deterring it from its actions so as far as the palestinian authority is concerned there have been and dealing with this diplomatically but many palestinians in the street they say they're being too soft many thanks for that correspond need for us live in ramallah and occupied west bank keeping across all the latest lines coming in from reach. 2 breaking news now coming in from russia where at least 8 people most of them students have been killed in a school shooting in the southwestern city of khazan at least 20 people have been wounded local media is reporting that one suspect a 19 year old has been arrested witnesses have described hearing explosions while

u.s. regulators have approved pfizer biotech's corona virus vaccine for use on children as young as 12 most kovan 1000 vaccines worldwide have only been authorized for adults the head of the european medicines agency has also said the job could be approved for 12 to 15 year olds as early as this month dr peter drawback is an infectious disease and global health specialist in oxford in the united kingdom he says minus side effects far outweigh the benefits of vaccinations in children. this is really exciting news it comes on the back of a trial with about 2200 children 12 to 15 and if found results as we've been seeing with the pfizer vaccine through extremely safe extremely effective very strong immune response which suggests that vaccinated children that should reduce the risk
2:17 pm
of onward transmission and even though children have a low risk of dying from cove it we still see about one percent of children this age group with kobe who do get hospitalized there is the risk of long coated and up to one in 10 children and so there are still really important reasons to vaccinate children on top of that there's a massive potential population benefit as older adults have been vaccinated in the u.s. and in other countries we've started to see that the share of infections amongst particularly older children rising we've seen outbreaks in schools and team sports in the camps in so this is a really important next step in terms of the population level trying to reach herd immunity and further driving down infection rates so we should 1st maybe try to differentiate the kind of milder minor side effects soreness of the arm fevers feeling out of sorts for a couple of days with flu like symptoms from the more severe side effects that we've heard about with some other vaccines and so particular with pfizer we've seen
2:18 pm
very very very rare severe adverse events and that was true also in this trial children 6 truly say so sure there are going to potentially be some side effects india has reported another drop in the official number of new coronavirus infections that have been 329000 new cases and more than 3800 deaths that is in comparison to more than 400000 cases and over 4000 deaths an ounce on sunday the indian government is facing severe criticism on how it's handling the pandemic and the vaccine rollout and if a problem has this morning tony. we know the numbers entre liable because throughout this pandemic india has never conducted enough tests to know the real number of infections but what we are seeing is the numbers are coming down considerably enough in some of the previously worst affected places like maharashtra also here in delhi to visibly ease the pressure on the health care

prolong the u.n. has appealed for help as the humanitarian crisis rapidly to terry. we speak now it's a gem economy who's head of the regional office for southern eastern africa the united nations office for the coordination of humanitarian affairs she joins us on skype from nairobi in kenya. give us a bit more detail about the situation in madagascar because these reports of people being forced clay and termites just to stay alive just sounds absolutely incredible . thank you so much milan and thank you for having me as you just spoke about the situation is absolutely horrific so what we have seeing in madagascar is just one of the 5 countries in the world where we have what we refer to as i.p.c.c. phase 5 which is catastrophic food insecurity and the word catastrophe i think says it all we are talking about children who are severely malnourished in 2 of the
2:22 pm
districts in the grand soup which is that fast south region of madagascar that you spoke about in 2 of those districts malnutrition rates and nearly double the imagines he threshold which means that we are facing an immediate threat to the life of those children and as i mentioned in one district in the grandstand region we are facing catastrophic food insecurity you spoke about people surviving off of clay the eating locusts the 80 anything that they can to survive this drought it's the 2nd severe drought 2 years in a row and people asked suffering tremendously it is a so horrendous to look at these pictures and to imagine that this sort of starvation is going on now in you know it can still go on these days i mean what has caused the situation to escalate because this is a notoriously poor country anyway. you're absolutely right it is here griffith to see this today but there are number of factors so the grand sort of
2:23 pm
madagascar is chronically food insecure it is a region that faces a lot of challenges on top of that we've had as i mentioned 2 back to back drought so this is truly exceptional for the region it's not the annual challenges that they face it's to truly severe droughts and we have to look at this in the context as well as the global climate crisis this is one of the countries in the world that is most exposed to climate shocks and it's what we often refer to as being at the forefront of the climate crisis so these back to back drought to truly exceptional and they've driven this deterioration of the situation now at the same time of course the country is also grappling with codes that 19 this area that is particularly affected by this drought is very isolated it's really at the bottom of the country it's difficult to reach and again people have faced challenges to reach the services to reach the assistance that they need because of comfort 19 so it's really this accumulation of shocks that have hit people in this region and have
2:24 pm
driven this particularly severe situation and what can be done to help these people is that more the government can do if they in a position to do so so why is this just down to the international community to intervene. so we as the united nations together with the government launched the flash appeal to respond to this crisis in january and the government is doing all that it can but this is one of those situations where that accumulation of shocks that i spoke about mean that we have to come in as the international community now what more can we do we are doing a lot more than 700000 people have been assisted with food and agricultural assistance since the beginning of this year but the appeal is desperately underfunded and we have to remember that madagascar is an island it takes time to bring supplies on to the island it takes time to me of supplies within the island
2:25 pm
and so we need desperately more funding now in order to mobilize a far bigger response to this escalating crisis many thanks for your time gemma connell head of the regional office for southern in east africa the united nations office for the coordination of humanitarian affairs thank you thank you man and. china's population is growing at its slowest pace since the 1950 s. with falling birth and a rapidly aging population the results of a once in a decade census also reveal a population grew by more than 5 percent to 1400000000 people but as katrina you report from beijing experts predict that number will start to decline within the next 5 years. wang surely it is 44 and looks forward to retiring at the age of 50 but she may need to wait a little longer the chinese government is set to raise the age of retirement by at least 5 years just one of the policy changes expected in response to the country's

rapidly aging society. i couldn't accept a my retirement have been delayed much longer i was very concerned why i heard this news according to the results of a once in a decade census china's population is growing and growing at its slowest pace in decades since 2010 expanded by 5.38 percent to 1410000000 people falling short of the government target of 1.42 adults say china is facing a demographic time bomb and the numbers may be lowered that caught it. in the 1925000000 babies were born every year last year the figure was 12000000 even if you believe this number is less than half of what it was the workforce is declining quickly and china is losing its economic vitality the population is expected to shrink as early as 2022 this will impact china's ability to compete
