but israeli airstrike has flattened another high rise tower the show rukh tower housed media organizations as well as residential homes at least 56 palestinians have been killed since monday they include 15 children and 3 women and from gaza hamas is launching another barrow's rockets it says it's in response to the killing of senior hamas commanders including its military chief and follows the launch of more than $1000.00 rockets the night before. these are live pictures from gaza of rockets coming out of israel earlier a missile fired from gaza hit the town of steroids just a few kilometers from the border with gaza at a 6 year old child is reported to have been killed al-jazeera software is on the line now with us from gaza. what's the latest from there.

that's one. we could see here from the top of our building that car of gaza really . dozens of rockets is being fired from from the converse of. israeli cities and we could hear to the exclusion maybe you could hear through the bomb. 1 tech school just all very gravely. trying. to set. the fire on group rockets. from gaza. this is part of what's going on now. just minutes before. 2 the attack. in. 1 many places all over the gaza strip. just the same day the. one that they will destroy on employment that they will destroy one of the

9:06 pm
falling around hitting some of the road and cause we there is another journalist close by who was hit in in the knee by some some shrapnel he appears to be ok it's it's obviously extremely dangerous situation here as it is around various parts of israel and indeed within gaza but this appears to be the latest major response coming out from gaza to what is being the one another day of strikes within both the hamas senior commanders who were killed in that israeli airstrike operation and indeed the taking down the destruction of another part of the gaza skyline has elicited the kind of response that israelis were preparing for that everyone was really expecting and that indeed hamas and islamic jihad had warned of that with there are some pretty big bits of metal that have come down around us here and harry took us through what happened just an hour or so ago
9:07 pm
instead it would not far from where you are. that's right there was an earlier very large barrage from hamas the other main fighting group within within gaza of course the group that controls gaza. and it said that 130 rockets had been fired this was some 4045 minutes after the destruction of that i'll show you a tower. and there were alerts in central israel gish down in tel aviv also alerts in steroids and ashkelon towns closer to the gaza strip and inside stare at one direct hit on an apartment building and reports of 3 injuries 16 year old boy critically injured. there are reports that he was in a shelter but that might have been a open window or some kind of opening and so more more injuries on the
9:08 pm
israeli side as this latest sustained attack comes from inside gaza and what is the fear israeli leadership doing the right balance there do we know of how they're going to respond to things going to escalate further from here. well that's what they're promising the israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu has called this an ever increasing operation he is said that there will be more unimaginable things happening to the terrorists as he calls them inside gaza and indeed there is a. jew to have taken place a security cabinet meeting of the israeli government leadership and its senior military brass as well discussing next steps now there have been some reports that those discussions could even include the options of extending the operation to some
9:09 pm
use of ground forces that is just i have to stress. just reporting in the israeli media and not even reporting that such a decision has been made merely that such a decision may be discussed during the course of that meeting however even if that isn't on the table and there are all sorts of attendant risks for the israelis never mind the kind of impact it could have on gaza if they went ahead with such an operation even if that is not decided on there is still as has been shown over the last days options from the air that are incredibly destructive and part of this escalatory path that both sides seem to be taking the voice of harry force that there live from southern israel harry in a shelter as we speak at the moment many thanks for the moment harry. let's go to the white house now we're hearing that the u.s. defense secretary has spoken to his israeli counterpart and that the u.s.
9:10 pm
secretary of state actually blinken has asked for both sides to cease the violence . and sleeping can reported to have spoken to israel's prime minister netanyahu in by telephone earlier white house correspondent kelly how good is there for us in washington kimberly what more do we know. there has been a flurry out of reach out by this 5 in the administration to both israeli and palestinian officials in the last 24 hours we're now getting a sense of what that looks like and what the main messages have been we've just gotten a readout of the call between the secretary of state and to the blinken and the israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu in it we are told that the secretary of state expressed concern about the ongoing rocket attacks the u.s. concerned about these but also condemning those rocket attacks expressing israel's right to defend itself and also calling on the parties to halt the violence but
9:11 pm
what's important in this statement as well in addition to what the defense secretary is called the united states is ironclad support for israel the secretary of state also sent this message to benjamin netanyahu and that is that it is the israelis as well as the palestinians right in equal measure to freedom prosperity security and democracy so this is very important in terms of the position of the biden administration what we also know though is there is grave concern for the escalating violence here in the united states and the fact that despite efforts and reaching out at various levels of government this seems that those calls for a deescalation have been ignored that's why the secretary of state has dispatched the deputy a 2nd assistant secretary of state for israel and palestinian affairs to head to the region to meet with both israeli officials as well as palestinian officials in
9:12 pm
order to try and bring down the temperature we also know from the white house press secretary that there have been about 25 different major calls to various levels of government and governmental those include the government of qatar as well as egypt we are told that there have been calls to both of those governments because there. it's a recognition here in the u.s. that they are chattels to hamas and they feel that this is important to have us be included in this conversation of deescalation so these are some of the headlines that have been coming out of washington in just the last hour or so as the white house continues to try and bring an end to the ask elation of violence that they've seen playing out for a number of days kerry many thanks indeed al-jazeera white house correspondent kelly how could there in washington to take you live now to a statement being made by the palestinian president mahmoud abbas let's listen and

a human rights lawyer and an associate professor at rutgers university she joins us now live via skype from fairfax in virginia. to get your thoughts on where we are right now in this what appears to be still an escalating conflict here where do you think this is going. i think it's really important to emphasize that even in the absence of what appears to be a crisis point that the structural violence that shapes palestinian lives and building so right now we're all paying attention because of the great because of the confrontation settlers backed by. the judiciary as well as the police are about to forcibly remove palestinians from their homes and chipchura and has said are protests across of. the
9:28 pm
separating palestinians from one another but even in the absence of this common nishan lying the bias that we should be concerned with is constant and debilitating which is why it emphasizes for us that the response must not be about just keep escalating the moment but must be about resolving this issue by ending israeli apartheid and i know you were listening to what president mahmoud abbas was saying there at the opening of that meeting of the palestinian leadership what do you think of what you heard and read his hear the position to do anything about deescalating this. i think that that palestinian official leadership has been lacking in many many respects i think that it has for a long time failed to represent the palestinian people adequately we have seen that the peace process as laid out by the united states to the bilateral negotiations
9:29 pm
and in trying to moscow has become a trap for palestinians that makes our conditions worse it is a losing battle the palestinian official leadership at this point should be to encourage diplomatic capitals to impose sanctions on israel to have a full frontal effort for accountability to mobilize into a different discourse part of sitting down p's mediation and instead move towards justice accountability pressure that official leadership has failed to do so and is now in many ways obstructing the efforts were generations who are doing that work on their own through their illegal advocacy efforts through their grassroots efforts through transnational solidarity through media efforts have continued to carry the banner of the palestinian cause not because but in spite of an official leadership that seems to be out of touch what do you make of
9:30 pm
the biden ministrations response to all of this so far to what extent do you think that they've been caught on the hope in the end that their policy. is not yet fully formed. i think that there's the bad and ministrations silence is actually speaking very loudly where they stand on this issue and has exposed for all to see how the liberal the new year peace process and lip service to 2 state solution is actually a cover for our beating by the by a minute ministration is fulfilling the same project that the trumpet ministration when it moved the u.s. embassy from tel aviv to jerusalem dividing ministration made clear that not only would they not move that embassy back but now that they're doing is they're overseeing the outcome of that mall which is the that that the saying to palestinians that you do not belong here this is not a real estate dispute this is
9:31 pm
a settler colonial condition where israel is removing need of palestinians to replace them with jewish zionist settlers. ministration is overseeing that move and making it seem as if this is an issue about gentrification and homelessness when in fact what's before us is that palestinians are becoming refugees and so i call on the by administration to to begin to be accountable they're part of the problem and if they do not want to be a part of the solution they certainly need to stop being a part of the problem and should be held to account by other 3rd parties and they were held to account many conflicts before such as their intervention in nicaragua such as their interventions in the middle east and in the night this is an other instance where the u.s. is flexing its imperialist muscle to the detriment of people who are on the ground it's really good to talk to many thanks to you for being with us. in fairfax
9:32 pm
virginia. the u.n. secretary general antonio. spoke a while ago he says that restarting the peace process is needed to resolve this issue. international law applies to everybody without exception all member states are supposed to abide by the resolutions namely the resolutions really council and obviously the unity of the significance of the received extremely important instruments the recent incidents demonstrate how important it is to restart effectively the peace process because it's the only way i am a true believer that we need to promote a 2 state solution living in peace and harmony between the 2 and with normalized relations with the region and the full participation of the countries of the region of the international community as a whole in creating the conditions for this peace process to move forward. lived out of the u.n. i was as kristen salumi is new york for us kristen what are we to make of what the
9:33 pm
secretary general said and the u.n. security council has met for the 2nd time on the on what's going on in gaza and israel what came out of that. well there have been 2 security council meetings in the last 2 days clearly the issue is on the minds of diplomats and the international community and the secretary general but no statement coming from the security council as a whole and we heard. the the secretary general expressing his desire for unity in the international community there but we're not seeing it here at the united nations to briefings by the u.n. mideast coordinator toward venice and have described a very challenging situation on the ground he talked about a deteriorating situation that could descend into full scale war the worst that he's seen in years. but again the council was unable to put
9:34 pm
a unified front and come forward making a statement we did hear in the last hours so from some members of the security council france arland norway and estonia coming out together and making a joint statement expressing their grave concern at the situation they called for an end to rocket fire into israel they called for maximum restraint on the part of israel in responding to that rocket fire they expressed their dismay at the civilians who are being impacted by this violence and also to express their concern about the clashes that have been taking place in east jerusalem around the holy sites and the threatened inventions of palestinians in east jerusalem a call for an end to those things as well putting some cars. text to the current violent situation in the underlying issues that have brought us to this situation
9:35 pm
but norway had proposed similar ideas for the council to. put out as a whole and that was rejected we're told that the united states stood in the way telling other members of the council that they felt this would be counterproductive they wouldn't engage in revisions when revisions were offered when we know they have been working behind the scenes directly with israel a close ally when we reached out to the united states to comment on this they told us that the united states is engaging constructively to ensure that any action on the part of the security council is helpful in deescalating tensions again they felt that moving forward with some sort of unified statement. would not achieve that goal. the secretary general spokesperson said that obvious we asked him about
9:36 pm
this is well and he said that obviously any unified statement on any international issue coming from the council would be helpful but they were hopeful that all has not been lost here but again a very grim scene the scenario being painted by the un's top envoy on middle east peace toward venice line about the situation there worrying that it will be further descending into chaos if more is not done and he has called publicly on both sides to deescalate to do whatever they can to deescalate and called on the international community to do what it can to deescalate so far though no unified position coming from the security council which is there as christine salumi reporting live from the u.n. in new york kristen many thanks indeed this is. if you just joined us here's a quick update on some of the latest developments from gaza and israel
9:37 pm
as ready as strikes on the gaza strip of killed several senior hamas commander as house later said that it launched $130.00 rockets towards the israeli city of tel aviv rockets struck an apartment building instead it was just a few kilometers away from gaza israeli media is reporting that a 6 year old boy who is in that building is in a critical condition these are live pictures now. live pictures from gaza. with. explosions. strikes perhaps on gaza let's bring in our series harry forces who's in in southern israel. gary bring us up to speed what's the latest what's happening that is obviously some kind of the there are strikes going on in gaza as we speak. well certainly we could hear and feel certain pretty big loss just in the last
9:38 pm
couple of seconds and so yes it does seem as if that is the case if so it follows an extremely large 2nd round of rocket fire evening coming from inside gaza 1st in the immediate aftermath of a major building being destroyed inside this inside the city by israeli air strikes there was according to hamas 130 rockets fired north from gaza and then within the last 40 or so minutes palestinian islamic jihad said that it was going to fire at around 9 or 9 pm and it did so there was an exceptionally large round again then of rocket fire and a lot of it was intercepted right over our position here forcing us to flee into a shelter there was quite a lot of. shrapnel falling around us if i can hold up some of what. what we what we saw coming down. this is obviously. a fragment of
9:39 pm
either an iron dome interceptor or one of the rockets coming out of gaza and so it was hitting vehicles around here it was falling on the ground around us and so the sheer volume of fire coming out is constantly being attempted to be intercepted by the iron dome and those interceptor rockets but because they're firing in such concentration such number in such a short period of time it seems that a lot of the munitions are getting through and as you say in that 1st round from hamas that fell into steroids a direct attack a direct hit on an apartment building 6 year old boy in critical condition saying live pictures now as well from haifa at the moment where there are obviously some kind of disturbance going on harry earlier we're seeing pictures also from the
9:40 pm
shake shot a neighborhood i know that's a good good way away from where you are at the moment are you hearing anything from what's going on there are in an era in haifa. i'm literally just been informed about that before you came to us all i know is that there have been apparently further stand offs of some kind in shakespeare or that is where there is that issue of palestinians who live there for generations facing being displaced by the israeli legal system and a suit by a jewish corporation saying that jews have the original deeds or at least the the pre 948 deeds to the land of those homes were built on a major fueling factor of the very widespread tensions and disturbances that spilled up and blew and blew up in jerusalem on monday and led to lead us very much to where we are now as to what's been happening in haifa i think i can shed
9:41 pm
a bit more light on that and indeed in other towns around israel in but in central israel entire period next to the sea of galilee and and elsewhere what we're hearing and seeing are images largely this this time of jewish protesters and rioters. chanting death to arabs in some some cases beating up and destroying arab. businesses and premises this was after the last couple of nights when a lot of these disturbances seemed to tip in the other direction those many palestinian israelis who were attacking jews although even in that instance there was some going the other way as well this is something that the israeli government and i think israelis generally are deeply concerned about that these 2 communities are going to be roiled by this kind of into calming all violence between them face to face hand to hand at very close quarters the government has said that it is
9:42 pm
sending in the border force security forces as more military hardware coming in behind us board. force military forces who are usually deployed inside the west bank. they are being deployed to various cities inside israel to try to quell this load where we've seen a lot of the worst of this that is having an 8 pm curfew that was imposed earlier on and the prime minister's saying that he's going to deal with it with an iron fist so as the same time as we're seeing this kind of very heavy rocket fire coming out of gaza extremely heavy nonstop and the government says expanding israeli military action inside gaza there is this separate linked parallel and also critical issue of the potential of violence between jews and arabs flaring up across the country. many thanks indeed algiers harry forces there reporting live from southern israel we'll keep an eye on what's going on in haifa i will say with
9:43 pm
the pictures while we speak to where you are see michael berg who's a senior consulting research fellow of the middle east north africa program at chatham house he joins us now live via skype from london you know where do you see this going from here. sadly i think this kind of level of violence is not going to proceed any i'm so. it's almost incomprehensible that the security council can't reach an agreement. when the this kind level of violence on on on both sides and we see in the speech or the fight civilians on the both sides and the fatalities and the destruction and the security council. resolution of all sides to immediately called for a ceasefire rich sends a message that the international community is not invested enough in the conflict
9:44 pm
at least to 2 cold focuses but i think what we saw i think we need to look at the bigger picture and all happened in the last few weeks serious of footage your response will decision on the israeli side when it comes to shift when it comes to not knowing is john was my stool in there in the palestinian an election every handed approach but it did police enjoy muslim doing the holy month. actually expose this julie in devoted brilliantly of the situation in saudi you know as well it's in jerusalem it's all to the surface that it will lose is conflict because the relation between these and palestinians. as a result of these 2 years is explored enough to to put it back together again so you say that it was an act of stupidity that there are others that have them are saying that it but it it was a it was constructed it was deliberate. because of what's going on politically in
9:45 pm
israel but what is it going to take i mean it doesn't need a 3rd party here to come in and mediate russia today says that there should be and it's national quartet me saying on the conflict we know that there been efforts to mediate by by egypt the u.s. at the moment doesn't seem to have a policy doesn't seem to know what it's doing where where is this going to how is it going to be going to be solved this militarily accompli solved it has to be done diplomatically. sometimes stupidity can be deliberate and that's what we see what you want to settle so trying to look for issues in job is to ensure that it will never be a palestinian capital in jerusalem and by the time to destroy the 2 state solution and. folk leave this state of conflict into
9:46 pm
a good church but going back to your question i think jim crow thought international. thought on this was to come form i think for 'd washington fold a united nations it also needs to come from the region i think we saw in the past that egypt. could could blow kill cease fire i think we have the influence the news all the hamas so i think you. know countries from the region and from also. and lean on the israeli side on the palestinian side at least hold now to stop the fire now will be only i think it's about time. when there is a cease fire and when there is a learning in the conflict. this side cease to goodwill and of this causes down the line issues that eventually if only few years bring us to this institution.
9:47 pm
you're sam sorry i'm really good to talk to you many thanks indeed for for being with us. from chatham house in london right let's go back to harry forces in southern israel who can. tell us more about what's going on not where he is in central israel can see at the moment you need to take shelter again. the he's just standing in front of the camera now he'll be with us his kids sorry harry i think we sprung that on you there you can hear me now i got yes we. is right now we just had another we just had another incoming round of of rocket fire and interceptors going up 11 blast in the air not too far away so we. we're taking it pretty seriously but given the shrapnel that fell down a little bit earlier on so that's where i was just now but yes i'm back here now so
9:48 pm
so please ask away. we were just talking to were t.l.c. mappable better about about how all of this how all of this ends right now it is difficult to see how. with passions running so high everywhere it seems that even if there was a negotiated settlement that the peace or at least. quiet but not with the situation is ever could be described as quiet. normality that normality could return what counts for the manatee. you know i think we're a long way from getting back to. as you say what counts for normality in this very normal part of the world but yes this is i think a confluence of. of political pressures of interests of the kind of build up that we've seen that you were just hearing about over the last month or so
9:49 pm
and i think for. benjamin netanyahu and the israeli government in particular the idea that. that they would not respond in a very major way to what they see as a crossing of a red line by the attack the long range rocket attack on monday from hamas towards jerusalem are saying that in turn was because of the israeli crossing of the lines over the luxor mosque compound and the issue of the shakes terror but the fact that as far as the israelis are concerned that was a major attack a long range rare attack on the areas around jerusalem it was beyond what we've seen in the kinds of escalations pretty frequent over the last few years where there have been fairly low numbers at any one time of rockets fired into the immediate surrounds of gaza there is criticism from the israelis who do
9:50 pm
live around gaza saying that their lives and their communities aren't given due weight and then it's only when a target such as jerusalem and tel aviv in and central israel where there are more votes they would put it lie that the israeli government responds in this kind of a way but there are political pressures on benjamin netanyahu and the israeli government to continue this and to show both hamas and show israelis themselves that they are paying back what they see as a crossing of a red line of course the problem is that once that begins. it will always elicit another escalatory response and you go up the escalation ladder and the decisions by the israeli government to target and attack the kinds of things they have been doing inside gaza themselves have been extremely severe extremely widespread they

would point to the fact that they are telling residents to get out of some of these buildings before they attack them and destroy them but these a major parts of the civilian infrastructure within gaza these buildings which have been coming down the the 6 how mass leadership senior commanders who are who were killed earlier in the day these are the kinds of things that once both sides start to get into this kind of gridlock of escalation it becomes extremely difficult and so far there isn't really even any expression publicly certainly not on the israeli side of wanting to seek anybody to come in and mediate there is talk instead of further intensifying an ever increasing expanding bigger more powerful military response the defense minister benny gantz saying that there was no end date in sight or at least there has been none being put on this military operation at area

a curfew in lodge for example. but we are seeing after a couple of nights when a lot of the violence perhaps the preponderance of the violence was coming from arabs towards towards jews resource synagogues set light in large tonight we've seen a mosque set light in lord we've seen death to arabs being chanted we've seen an ice cream parlor owned by arabs in beit jala being ripped apart death to arabs being chanted in the seaside sea of galilee side lakeside town. a tourist town where there is a large ultra-orthodox population up in ark a historic town in the very far north on the the mediterranean coast again a real tourist draw in days that aren't like these there are there's violence there as well and so this is not just about these 2. these 2 powerful bodies the well i

mean it did these israeli government and military an extremely powerful industrial . enormous country and military versus this well funded but obviously much smaller. military in the in the face in the shape of hamas this is about individuals who have been used to kind of living to. rather of course these tensions do flash up we've seen just recently the advance of the israeli right the very far right our facility to design extent in the israeli parliament by benjamin netanyahu and the street protests and we've seen attacks small isolated incidents of palestinians slapping ultra-orthodox jews putting that on take that raise passions as well combined now with what we've seen in the last few days it seems that this entire situation is erupting in people who have got used to sort of living perhaps not closely or in on particularly friendly terms but

living with each other doing business with each other in the same communities living pretty close to each other now these relationships are being roiled by very severe bouts of common or violence and so it's an extremely serious issue alongside this military escalation and. your and. your way away from where or all of that is happening we can hear a lot of low traffic there in the background earlier you were telling me that the military vehicles have been passing by on their way towards the border with gaza could the could that indicate that some sort of ground offensive maybe about to get under way. i don't think we can go that far at this stage what we can say is that yes there have been. pretty consistent flow of large military vehicles on the back of flatbed trucks there we've seen 155.

propelled howitzers long range artillery coming in quite large numbers we've seen tanks and armored personnel carriers and small attract vehicles as well now this does happen during escalated tensions between israel and hamas in gaza usually we see lines of tanks ranged up quite close to where this junction is that we are on. in here. and usually those what once after a day or 2 the tensions die down again those tanks those military vehicles are taken away this has something of a different feel about it it feels like it is. that there is there are preparations being made not necessarily to carry through with such an operation but at least to have it as an option that would accord with some of the reporting that we've seen in the israeli media which is that if even if they aren't going to decide to carry out a ground offensive because that. carries with it it's ready with all sorts of major risks that least we're going to talk about israeli government in
