9:00 pm
save the world. sneeze into your oh. this is al-jazeera. hello again i'm peter darby you're watching the news hour live from our headquarters here in doha coming up in the next 60 minutes israel warns its air campaign on gaza could last for several days as palestinian factions fire more rockets into israel. israel deploys more troops to the gaza border as it weighs up possible ground operation. as airstrikes rained on grasso the u.s. blocks of call for the u.n. security council to meet to discuss the escalating conflict. also india's

overwhelmed hospitals start using the drug for coronavirus patients that goes against the advice of the world health organization. and i'm to have an ass with this force off the away foot confound the champions league final is moving from istanbul to the portuguese government have laid out some rules for the traveling manchester city and chelsea fans which means they'll be in the country for less than 24 hours. israel plans to continue its aerial bombardment of gaza ignoring international calls for calm and the rapidly climbing death toll $89.00 palestinians including 18 children and at least 7 people in israel have been killed since monday palestinian factions have fired more than 100 rockets into israel targeting televisa found
9:02 pm
where all international flights have been diverted. let's just show you the live pictures coming to us out of gaza you can see clearly something going on there in the skies over gaza it is compared to where we were maybe a couple of hours ago a little bit quieter than it was clearly a very fluid situation there on the ground and in the air over that crucially important israel gaza border area let's bring in harry forsett our correspondent in southern israel harry just get us up to speed with where we think we are right now such a difficult situation to predict. yeah i just want to get up speed on something that has literally just happened as you were reading the headlines there was an enormous volley of rockets fired right over our heads we're inside a shelter now which is why you can't see me in vision which we are very close to with the camera and
9:03 pm
a number of the distance from us long very close to our position right here guys do you think it's safe to go back outside and not yet we're going to stay where we are right now this follows what we saw around sunset which was a major movement it seemed of israeli heavy weaponry tanks and other armored vehicles tracked vehicles heading south from the position towards the cause of the border at the same time and that is a very extensive barrel of israeli ought to really. come up from behind it it seemed like there was covering fire or even further than that and it there were reports as well inside goes around the beaches inside gaza from little the gaza of artillery shells really doing a lot of damage this this is coming on the same day we're coming back out of the shelter right now so i'm hoping to come in front of god so we get back in one of the camera. i'm coming back in front of the camera now and so this was
9:04 pm
a an event that taking place on the same day as the. as the israeli military is finalizing a plan for a potential ground operation it said publicly that it was going to be coming up with that plan moving up the chain of command and it was going to be for the political leadership to make a decision on whether that would take place now this does not indicate that it is taking place what i can tell you is that we did see a lot of armament moving in the direction of gaza and a very low there's more coming and a very heavy. artillery barrage coming from gaza i'm going back inside the shelter now so we're expecting to hear. more interceptions close to us peter back to you please continue for harry a you quite happy to carry on talking to us if you and the crew would rather just kind of regroup in a different location we're very cool with. the know we were happy you
9:05 pm
were inside inside a very thick walled. and solid looking shelter you can hear perhaps about the reverberations of some of those high and deceptions in the background ok. that immediate area where you and the crew are perry this hour what are the specific targets is it possible to predict or to speculate what the targets that the israeli authorities the israeli military going after. you know more shelling more showing ok that's right to the gulf all right so just to let you know i'm going to write about them heard sirens coming and more more of these are i don't know deceptions it's impossible to tell you what the targets are going out from gaza they're coming over our heads we aren't in an area which appears to be directly targeted by any of the armaments that we've seen coming out of gaza over the last few days what we have seen though is when there have been
9:06 pm
these very heavy barrage is and this is obviously one of them that had been flooding areas in central israel such as television. the shelter has got reverberating with some of these explosions of us now. the iron dome batteries close to us have been trying to intercept. what i can see is that during those periods we get messages on our phones and factory and we getting any messages off it yes we do get messages on our phones as we see these events over us of sirens and impact as well reported elsewhere in israel we are quite close to the city of ashkelon which has been coming under a lot of work quite close to the steroids and i showed it a little bit further up the coast these have been. taking a lot of the. a lot of the incoming from these rockets out of gaza but every not a ged major major barrages going further further afield i'm being told it's safe to
9:07 pm
come back outside again now so i'm going to chop back to the to the camera and is this all of a piece areas you're talking to us we're looking at a live shot coming to us from gaza and also we've just we've just focused in on you hopping up in front of your camera we were looking at the locks shot when you were inside that air raid shelter do we need to triangulate harry however what's going on there right now with what you were taking us through was going on in our last half hour which was that kind of tank movement in that very close immediate vicinity to where you're standing at the moment. and. well i mean i think you can almost look at it as one big interlocking event at this stage this escalation is mounting and mounting and each escalatory step is being met by another and so what we've seen coming from the israeli side today that start with that we have seen tank antitank missiles units being taken out
9:08 pm
ok sirens in ashdod which i'm just being told so ashdod is at a city. a little distance up the coast what you say 40 kilometers up the coast from here so that's kind of a medium range target for the for the rockets coming out of gaza. so what we've seen from israel again is major targets being. attacked inside gaza or an intelligence unit which the israelis say were was housing active a number of intelligence offices of hamas at the time it was hit apartments belonging to senior military commanders from hamas for anti-tank missile units the head of the drone unit because suicide attack drones had been used again for the 1st time today coming out the other direction there were 100 rockets fired earlier in the afternoon to places like tel
9:09 pm
a view of central israel to in the south and even in the far south the morning airport very close to this was a new development a 250 kilometer range rocket which are said was a new weapon that its military spokesman said put the entirety of israel within its range within its sights and the significance of that is that israel had only very shortly before then decided to reroute all of the incoming air traffic from its main airport the main entry point for almost everyone into this country ben-gurion airport between tel of eve and jerusalem to the ramón airport to try and preserve the safety of those aircraft and to try to preserve the the open skies that still obtain despite what's going on here so it's obviously an attempt to challenge that policy by the israelis make them think about whether they want to keep their skies open or not. thanks very much stay close harry force and the crew there for al
9:10 pm
jazeera are reporting live from southern israel for the news out al-jazeera. joins us from. what we were just talking to harry there we were looking at pictures from gaza tell us from your vantage points what's going on there. new developments there's really been firing big barrages of artillery shells towards the north of the gaza sort of across the border there are hundreds of families are now evacuating their homes in the north of gaza because of the heavy artillery shells landing and the north of the gaza strip the ambulance told us we talked to the ambulance services they told us that some of the out of to lot of shells they had directly some of the houses in the so-called village which is very close to the border there was. also there are some other residential areas near the border also they evacuated because there is fear that some of the time around the
9:11 pm
tank shells or 10 of the shells might head their homes so they say not he is repeating itself it's the same of the war of 2014 when hundreds of families also evacuated their homes because of the random shooting we've also got the confirmation from the ambulance services and got the. receiving have been receiving appeals from from citizens in the south of the gather sort of mainly in russia. really. fighting jets that have been raided on some houses without even. giving them time to leave their homes and they believe that there are lots of people under the rubble. so far. that they managed to achieve 5 bodies including children and women from one of the destroyed houses the

ministry of health. so far the official number of the. $89.00 killed including 18 children. believe they believe according to what they confirm to us that the number is expected to be a dramatically increasing because of. the unknown number of casualties on the houses ok we have to leave it there reporting live from gaza for the news thanks very much you keep us posted i'm sure divel has more on today's and strikes in and around gaza. gaza skyline unfair as they and new wave of israeli air strikes has targeted the hamas police academy among other facilities israel says being used to launch missile attacks on its cities. the israeli bombardment how so far killing dozens of palestinians was israel says hamas has fired up to 1500 rockets into its territory over the past
9:13 pm
3 days killing several people. sirens were had in northern israel and elsewhere warning of more hamas missiles. israel's iron dome defense system was seen in action over the border with the gaza strip to intercept palestinian rockets. incoming international flights to been good in airports near tel aviv were diverted to the southern part of ramadan that came under attack although easily of says the rockets fell short was but in gaza and the west bank palestinians celebrated it did fit the festival marking the end of the holy month of ramadan despite the bombings and on set and. think all is good but it's just such situation because some people can feel happy and others god help them. it's hard for people in gaza west bank and elsewhere in the world to watch what is

going on and keep silent i hope it will be good for all sack i will celebrate the board money to buy new clothes for my son in order to challenge the situation and celebrate i want to make my son happy journey and i hope next state i will take him to pray in el aqsa mosque and chant god the greatest. hundreds gathered at the compound early morning for 8 previous. days it was a scene of unprecedented raids by israeli forces from to the west vials in. as promised kenyans say the incidents meant israel had lost weapons cry posited mind argues radio and hamas rocket attacks continue there are no signs of either side agreeing to a truce. israel has called up thousands of reservists and is massing to seize the border with gaza in what feels to be a preparation for
9:15 pm
a land invasion homicide are just. well al jazeera spoke with yousef hama show a resident of gaza who works we know which in refugee council he told us about having to flee his home after an asteroid. i was in my house with my my pregnant wife because there is my well my 3 years old daughter and it trying to convince ourselves that the safe to be at your house usually nothing more safe for us than you or your case your house any so 6 pm 2 days ago i said the land is drawn it's like. below my house. so i tried everything happen suddenly i had to flee my house very clear usually we understand that when we enter on talk it hit and i building it means that it will lead to it and an airplane attack so i had to fear as much as i can.
9:16 pm
i didn't i could not take anything because i was just trying to deal with my terrified daughter i had to take care of my regnant wife trying to run away next about men as as useless as gazans also i can see that we are hoping that this is going to finish as well as it can be the only personally i'm waiting that's the only thing that i have and the only short that i have this is the 1st day of this is my outfit. and other 2000000 gazans are hoping that this is going to finish as much soon as they can. several countries including china and norway have asked for an open un security council meeting to discuss the israel palestine conflict but the u.s. is pushing back on that president joe biden's book short time ago he wants to see a significant reduction in the rocket attacks one of the things that. i have seen thus far is that. there has not been
9:17 pm
a significant overreaction the question is how how we get to a point where they get to a point where there is a significant reduction in the attacks particularly the rocket attacks that are indiscriminately fired into population centers can really help it is a white house correspondent reporting live for the news this hour kimberly hi there so what's the what's the white house calculation here kimberly when it comes to pushing back on this diplomacy. well the reasoning that we are hearing is that the feeling of the white house right now is that a meeting at the united nations level would not be productive and here's why there are a number of diplomatic outreach is that have taken place or are taken place by the ministration with respect to a top level envoy in the region meeting with both the israeli as well as
9:18 pm
palestinian leadership as well there is also an outreach to partners in the region such as qatar jordan and egypt all working as a sort of a channel to hamas in order to try and bring about a reduction in violence and the feeling of the white house is that this is a process that needs time to work and so that is why presumably the white house is pushing back for now on any sort of meeting at the united nations even though it was suggested by china norway and tunisia having said that the white house has not ruled out the possibility of that meeting taking place say next week but it appears for now they are hoping to try and bring about a deescalation through diplomatic channels is the u.s. going to unequivocally condemn what's going on. well i asked the white house press secretary about that because as you'll notice the statements coming out of the biden ministration this week have been condemning of rocket
9:19 pm
attacks and also that israel has a right to self-defense but missing from those statements is whether or not palestinians have that same right and will the administration condemn the evictions of palestinians from occupied east jerusalem here's what the white house press secretary had to say. in the state. policies also how to write an article for the attacks not coming from hamas to consider hamas the palestinian leadership let me rephrase the question you've repeatedly in the statement dan rather. does the white house does the final ministration sit down with the. palestinians. that he is looking to that in our readouts and certainly our national security advisor has raised and we have raised at many levels the importance of. addressing the building in these in these communities and the fact that you know in order to move forward and move toward
9:20 pm
deescalation that's an important issue to address but the white house in its statements has not condemned the evictions of palestinians nor has it articulated clearly and plainly the palestinians have an equal right to self-defense and that is why members of the president's own democratic party are calling for that and that pressure is growing in washington kimberly thank you very much kimberly health at the white house correspondent brian cartoonist's is a senior fellow at the center for american progress he joins us live from washington d.c. frank so this welcome to al jazeera is israel going to invade gaza. i hope not but it looks like it's taking steps to do so and i think the fact that rockets keep being fired from from gaza plus the security dynamics inside of israel the attacks and the violence between arab and jewish israeli citizens has led to this sort of
9:21 pm
law and order defense defensive mentality from netanyahu so i'm afraid that the security dynamics combined with the political dynamics inside of israel and amongst palestinians as well make it look like we may be in for some continued violence here unfortunately is it possible for the israeli military to do some sort of targeted step across the border but stop short of what would be an escalate saree big full on invasion i suppose it's possible but i think i'd be surprised if the i.d.f. really wants to go back in there given its past experience it would have to have some sort of clear goal to try to degrade the capability of some of these groups that are firing project out as it missiles into israeli territory but if they cross that line and went in i think it would likely provoke an even broader response so it's really i think not the ideal situation that you know situation is is to work
9:22 pm
towards this deescalation everybody's talking about and in that regard countries like egypt cutter as well as obviously the palestinian leadership have an important role to play we'll come to that in just a 2nd if we can please are you surprised you mentioned already in your 1st answer you surprised by the end communal violence that's taking place on the streets in various different towns and cities up and down israel. i'm a bit surprised but these factors i think are presidents and a lot of open societies where we're you know they're hardly divided by identity politics and different communities we had a feature of this where you basically have extremist gangs that prey on others. and have used sort of extreme sort of extremist politics and i think this is bubbling over what i find encouraging though is also i've seen signs of both arab and jewish israelis coming together to try to counteract this civil society organizations it's not the dominant scene in the media right now because the
9:23 pm
shocking acts of violence are things we're all troubled by but i also see the humanity of people trying to work together across different different lines inside of israel where do you think the biggest source of momentum for the diplomacy here will come within the region because the united nations security council the u.s. is pushing back against the idea of an open meeting of the u.n. security council the u.k. has made the right kind of noises nobody's reacting to that the egyptians we understand talking to the gazan politicians but nothing is coming of that either. yeah i think a lot of it has to come from within the region with the with the stronger nodes from the united states the united states i think it's been caught flatfooted a bit here we have it by ministration it came in and i understand why it is prioritized that pen damage here at home in economics here at home and then china in the world but in essence the team has not fully stepped up on the middle east it's adopted this posture that i think affected badly the obama administration as
9:24 pm
well which is this reactive tactical crisis management past year and and i think that's a function of just how it prioritized its issues but the u.s. i think has to play a stronger role i think they're saying some of the right things but not all of them and there's not enough emphasis on the diplomatic role that the united states and then key regional actors like cutter egypt jordan can and should play to try to deescalate tensions ok we'll have to leave it there brian thanks very much brian katulis the senior fellow at the center for american progress thanks for talking to us here on the news hour let's bring in our senior political analyst mowen bashara moment to just talk about joe biden for a 2nd is this a slightly unusual perhaps unpredictable misstep on the part of the u.s. president. no i don't think so i think it's quite deliberate there's a. joe biden is
9:25 pm
a complex issue when it comes to his are out of sight so he served something like 40 plus years in the senate and he has a record as one of the more pro israeli voices in the u.s. congress he's the guy famous for saying if israel did not exist we should have invented it to serve american interest he's the one who said i am not jewish but i am zionist he is the one with a long long record of pro israeli positions and yet he's also the man who served under. as vice president but i could bomb on him and he was personally humiliated a number of times by the likes of prime minister you know and you would say he mature enough but that so he should out probably be in a bit more conscious about what israel could or could not do specially that obama himself as he wrote in his own memoirs this is the only foreign policy issue with domestic implications for any u.s. threats so i think biden knows all of that but we also know is that the biden obama
9:26 pm
administration is the one that committed $40000000000.00 to israel for strategic buttresses minute that it produces so america is not a bystander. the president by the cannot just simply say well you know these guys they need to sort out their pains and we would send an envoy america is the patron of israel and america is the defender of his or the international arena is that america is the one that there's not a lot when given the un security council statement look i'm not so i'm not that does how about all it has had total it being the back of president and and not the our government and when it comes to is a violation it's been more or less silent moment let's talk about what's going on right now on the ground on the crucially important israel gaza border area and. i mean for you and for me i guess we should deal in what we know as opposed to what
9:27 pm
we think might be about to happen but if the israeli military is at the moment softening up garza as a prelude to crossing the border into gaza i mean that's an absolute concept isn't it you can't you can't just go into garza a little bit if you view it in terms of what the reaction will be because if israel goes into and starts occupying a little bit of garza how does israel manage that operation how do they make sure there's not any mission creep how do they send a signal and then pull out if they wanted indeed to pull out ok so we have we do have a record of israel's incursions invasion attacks on the part of gaza i want to you know it you know as a direct answer to your question if you will is that israel did in the past. step
9:28 pm
back step down for a few kilometers within guys and stop in order to create some sort of our of a zone if you were aware that workers there will be in control so that didn't happen that way that then you now is massing troops on the guise of borders that could either be part of our psychological war. or it could be part of a because his defense minister benny gantz the so-called something else is even what excited about the invasion of gaza he even blamed the us time for not allowing him meaning guns when he was. stopped with the military to finish the job in gaza. unfortunately there is no such a thing as for that shit but job in gaza and we see dr de a because strategically speaking i must did succeed in pushing that kenya over pushing isn't a corner because the way it's been should think these rockets the way it has been
9:29 pm
threatening even the main israeli airports and population centers it's clearly regardless of the put it the gun and his thought it conflicts which is very important but when the journey strict strategic calculus is it must react at the now now who walked himself into this mess what it must 3 act and how would you react if the rockets continue to be shot from gaza well he needs to deter hamas in a major way and now they are thinking apparently about about basically finishing timers and which is with me not from the past is almost impossible without a full fledged invasion. invasion would mean blogs in the streets of gaza to my knowledge from my sources i think there is a good 20 or 30000 armed hamas and security members within gaza and they have the rockets and solid support and we are talking about one of the most populated small
9:30 pm
strip of land in the world so any military operation within gaza will you mean major major blood should so much bloodshed that i don't think is right we can survive but there is all of that country that has always played that benevolent card if you well you know they one bomb a building unless they give it warning and and so on and so. so this is a major thing and it would have major implications for the region even among those who normalize relations and one last point on that see we are living storable the inheritance of 40 years of trauma where by nothing now believes not you know longer need to resolve palestinian issue you no longer need to resolve the guys issue or what you have to do is manage it because now you have these 4 or 5 countries in doubt about automobiles relations and you can simply continue by putting pushing the thumb or one of the palestinian authority and the palestinian resistance and
9:31 pm
just basically maintain a control of the situation what we've seen over the last 72 hours is that it is not controllable and that the palestinians no matter where they are in haifa in jerusalem or in gaza they are together as one people and their grievances are not going away and that without resolving this to shool politically diplomatically in terms of ending the occupation there is no military solution for israel in gaza or for themselves mo and always a pleasure to get your context and analysis on this this hot spot in our region now i'm sorry there is a senior political analyst talk today tomorrow and thank you very much. still to come here on the news for you. greece forges ahead of its e.u. partners and prepares to open its tourist doors to tourists who are vaccinated or hold a negative coronavirus test statistic it and this was news not a joke a bit general feel that i'll remain on track to meet in the finals of the world

must see. a let's get you up to speed with that disturbance in the arabian sea rate now we're starting to see some proper circulation on it and the area of concern really will be as we head toward go up through mumbai our computer model if i take it towards saturday it's still keeping it off shore but there is a circulation so it could certainly develop into a tropical cyclone over the next little bit give you a wider look right now at the middle east not a whole lot go and we do have some mountain showers for southern iran but high temperatures here kuwait 43 doha 42 but will dial that temperature up in doha on saturday up to 44 degrees ok off we go to south africa where temperatures and conditions are pleasant now capetown 21 degrees stress by 20 but we do have
