6:00 pm
this is al jazeera. hello and welcome i'm peter dhabi you're watching the news our live from our headquarters here in doha coming up in the next 60 minutes special coverage of the palestine israel conflict. protests across the occupied west bank as israel intensifies bombardments on gaza
6:01 pm
and the conflict shows few signs of letting up. we have teams in multiple locations we'll bring you the latest from ramallah garza bethlehem and now plus here on the news out. families in gaza scared for their lives and forced to leave their homes taking refuge in a school. ok let's get going starting this news out of the occupied west bank where a wave of protests have broken out over the israeli occupation there's also growing frustration and anger after israel intensified its airstrikes over gaza to stop rocket attacks from there there are ongoing standoff between protesters and israeli police in at least 200 different places from hebron and bethlehem to nablus and ramallah the police of volleys of tear gas and their. reports of live ammunition
6:02 pm
being used as well at least 7 palestinians have been killed by israeli security forces since friday morning many gathered for peaceful protest marches after friday prayers there's growing anger over both israel's occupation of palestine and the intensifying bombardment of gaza overnight israeli jets tanks and artillery hammered the territory forcing people to take shelter where they could 119 palestinians including 31 children have been killed since the offensive began on monday how mass fired another $220.00 rockets towards israel where at least 8 people have died since the conflict escalated the israeli military has deployed troops to the border between israel and gaza. well as we were saying a little earlier the top of the news will be live in bethlehem gaza and you can see there get a sense of what's going on on the streets we have teams covering this story the
6:03 pm
length and breadth of israel and gaza suffered in gaza harry forces in southern israel near and the israeli artillery battery we'll talk to them in just a moment 1st live to need it to him in ramallah in the occupied west bank just take us through what's been going on there since the last time we spoke to you. this is the situation that is unfolding here near the legal israeli settlement of bet where there is an israeli military checkpoint we've been seeing over the past few minutes since we spoke we spoke last palestinians were throwing fireworks at the israeli army probably in an attempt to fend off a drone that carried and loaded with tear gas bombs that is being flown by the israeli army and it can go to locations probably the army cannot reach so they lift the drone op take it to where the crowds ours and then they drop the tear gas
6:04 pm
bombs as you can see the protesters are still an absent flows they go towards the israeli army and then when they are met with for us with the rubber coated steel bullets or we're even hearing shots of live ammunition as well as the skunk. the 2nd quarter truck that has been used against the protesters over here all in all the situation in the occupied west bank is intensifying and people are saying that while they were at these protests were sparked by the latest round of escalation they have more than enough reasons to protest against the israeli occupation the in go and ongoing attacks by israeli settlers against them against them that are often carried out with impunity without indictment by the israeli
6:05 pm
state so yeah as you can see there is a lot of frustration by palestinians and they're trying to take to the streets to vent and to talk about it and to fight the israeli occupation do we have any idea how many people are trying to get away from and if they where are they going. you mean there are protesters who are trying to get away from the army as you can see now. crowds are cheering cause some palestinians threw a moment of on one of the israeli army jeeps and there are palestinians who are here coming to cheer the palestinian protesters now as we can see another round of tear gas fired at the protesters by the israeli army so they're trying to get away from the soldiers trying to get away from the tear gas bombs some are even carrying these gas bombs and throwing it back to the israeli army and israeli
6:06 pm
soldiers. and we are seeing cheers from the palestinians who are over here remember the methods that palestinians are using to confront israeli soldiers are not necessarily do not necessarily cause danger to the israeli soldiers but as many of them were telling us it's their way of showing that they're not afraid of the javine armed israeli soldiers and they are trying their best to show their frustration and anger and that they are indeed fighting the israeli occupation in every way they can these reports that the israeli military is using live ammunition of those reports relevant to your location in ramallah and if they are using live ammunition is that a quote ordinary israeli soldier or is it israeli snipers that they're using.
6:07 pm
it depends on the situation in response to your question about the live ammunition being used here yes we've heard several rounds of live ammunition that with fired we know that one palestinian was hit by live ammunition in the chest we're probably seeing one more palestinian who needs to go to the hospital is being transported now by the ambulances in terms of the israeli soldiers there are specific. there are specific soldiers who are used to target palestinians or use live ammunition but there are snipers who are targeting palestinians and in some previous protests we heard a risk see in morse to all of the injuries at the lower part of the body but this time this is not necessarily what we're seeing we're seeing injuries towards the
6:08 pm
chest the words the head which is why this situation is very volatile and it could escalate even further. knitter thanks very much that it was him reporting live there for the special news from ramallah let's just show you the latest live pictures as well coming to us from that arch you can see there what looks like israeli military equipment on the border there getting ready for something or planning on maintaining a position there there is a lot of speculation that we are imminently about to see some sort of israeli incursion across the border in to gaza or it's just being used as choreography to send a signal to primarily hamas but also to the broader palestinian community that something is about to happen let's talk to a force that our correspondent in southern israel harry can we just step back for a 2nd to give us a sense of where we are now we're into what day 5 going into day 6.
6:09 pm
yes that's right and it has been a day which started off after an extremely heavy night of strikes going into gaza and indeed rocket attacks coming out the earlier part of the day was comparatively something of a lol there were continuing strikes in both directions over not quite to the same level that we've been seeing recently i think if we're talking about the last few days we're talking about the most significant military escalation obviously since the war we're talking about new kinds of tactics used by hamas and the other fighting factions inside gaza sending long range rockets and huge numbers of rockets in short concentrated periods of time to attack urban areas in central israel in ways that have not been done before and as well as that we're seeing.
6:10 pm
strikes on gaza itself that seem determined to inflict a large amount of damage both in terms of the huge buildings that we've seen demolished by israeli airstrikes the targeted attacks on senior members of hamas the ignoring really of international calls to step back or talk about cease fires at this moment and also we're talking about something that we are hearing in israeli reporting which was this enormous barash and bombardment in northern gaza on thursday night there was a talk at that time of a potential ground incursion and indeed the israeli military said that it was attacking in gaza from the ground and from the air so that seemed to be a suggestion in many media companies took it as a suggestion that there was a ground invasion underway there reporting an israeli military now is that that was
6:11 pm
actually an attempt to drive people fighters underground in a concentrated area of tunnels get them preparing for the potential of an attack and then launched this very large bombardment from the artillery that you can see behind us here from the air as well 450 separate missile strikes the israeli military says it is assessing that damage and we're hearing nothing on that front from hamas itself there was though a very large round of rocket strikes shortly after that on the city of ashkelon ok for the moment thank you very much we'll come back to you a little later i'm sure let's talk tomorrow and bashar as you're a senior political analyst he joins us on skype from here in doha mo and welcome back to the news hour so emmanuel michael i see in the last hour the french president calling for calm on both sides i think it's pretty safe to assume that will go exactly at the moment no place. alas.
6:12 pm
it seems like the british have tried but the americans have tried gyptian is trying to rid a it's not going anywhere clearly. prime minister and now you know has made their own bets and not be stuck because very difficult for the israeli military establishment once its main airports have been threatened and some of its population centers have been threatened him to stop and clearly he started something that he did not expect were spiral out of control the way it is now. as we see it with the news there and it's in the so-called mixed cities. and jewish israelis that we're seeing it in the west bank and jerusalem we're seeing of course in gaza and i've been seeing images that are a death that i haven't seen in 2014 to be honest gyptian is jordanians lebanese
6:13 pm
certainly jordanian at benny's where the public opinion is heating up so i think could be a regional implications autor are already here with their clear the spread of the popular discontent all over the palestine is also here so i think climbing down the ladder is going to be difficult. and that the idea that he wants to finish the job as it were and that he has a bank of targets of that nature we've heard that in 2014 we've heard that in 2008 . he's been adamant in 2014 that you know he needs to finish the job as he's mossad had managed to go and said in 2013. is there a fail basically that had passed and failed diplomatically and i think they know what was on the break his hand for his own political career is in the corner now and he's lashing out do you get the sense maher when looking in on this conflict
6:14 pm
that both sides whether it's hamas or the israeli military feel confident and emboldened because there are this time around unique ingredients here you've got hamas with missiles that have got significantly big long range is on the other hand on the other side of the border in israel you've got the military using drones it's a conflict by remote there's this reporting of live ammunition being used and i mean the backstory clearly as well is that israel's got a very big very powerful very well funded military. absolutely and that's why over the last few days we have been warning about this idea of you know off site is an issue when we read warning about this approach that has been quite predominant in an israeli and western media talking about. you know the balance of
6:15 pm
power if you will there is no such a thing this is there is no symmetry here between the occupied and occupy and the so-called be an acquittal on the other colonized between a guerrilla type operation conducted by how most certainly all 'd the peaceful peoples and best the finest and and as you said is are the most for the divil a military force in the region but also a bit of historical context is also important here peter because i must is what the 3 decade old phenomenon is so this is this is a 70 year old conflict since israel kept existence of the neck but at this suspect happens to the pets that and the israelis have had many chances after the peace process started under american sponsorship and then they turned sponsorship to establish some sort of peace for the palestinians to accept the rules of the game about 2 states for 2 people and and jerusalem to get up with that of 2 states and none of that so what we've seen is the israeli sticking to
6:16 pm
a series for granted all these years 'd created the pent up violence that we see today and yes while there is no balance of power today because of israel's security it is or how mass is trying to establish some sort of a ban on assault here meaning you like that our people and we would like that yours if you have the airplanes i miss sides and so support where we have our own homemade missiles that will go awry shortly saws if you like so how much is trying to establish that i am not convinced that the mouse will be able to endure for a long period of time. that kind of a barrage of one bar ends that siege that is demanding but at the same time i don't think that claims to be a part of you know the western world and western democracies and champion of human rights and so on so forth is going to be able to get into gaza to continue that one
6:17 pm
by the guys anything to countless death and destruction. around by this that warns and stand count on the same support. countries already we know that the public opinion is changing in the united states in europe and certainly in the out of regions as i was saying earlier so i think time is not necessarily on israel's side what neither it is on on the side of the people of gaza talking about time being on the side of israel forgive me if my next question cern's incredibly cynical 2 and a half 3 weeks ago we were covering the quasar political slash legal story surrounding the israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu he is at the center of a political legal process where he is i guess in some senses fighting for his political future i did interviews on this channel we had guests coming on impartial guest saying mr netanyahu actually wants
6:18 pm
a 5th election is this conflict good news for him politically because it gets his picture wearing his black t. shirt talking to conscripted military people in the army yesterday this time yesterday instead of israeli voters talking about him having to go to court. and you call that cynical. but you're not cynical at all i think you're quite perceptive of what we've seen over the last several weeks and months. and this is something that by the way is no longer. a secret it's actually convention almost conventional wisdom in different corridors of power within is not cited this or it is something else now being said that repeat that even among the opposition itself and why because the record is very difficult. netanyahu is the man who incited
6:19 pm
organized united and allied to his party were the most radical elements in the israeli society we've seen it happening over months in israel. the israeli opposition spoke about it endlessly how could you ally yourself with those who had located genocide in palestine the most racist of racist israelis already liquid party is quite right wing and racist according to many israelis and certainly all palestinians but do i lie then a quick party that's already to the right to the most fanatical fan at the crites who want to see genocide in palestine that has happened in front of our eyes why because you wanted a solid majority in the knesset and he did succeed in uniting that very fanatical jewish zionist party and it owned 6 seats in the knesset and they are the ones who have been unleashed on jerusalem they are the ones who won israeli
6:20 pm
journalist called needing to do what's programs in jerusalem but few months and they are the ones who are organizing today and at that in people in haifa and other mixed cities so even when we talk about communal violence it's not really could be an abundance there are such a lot of militias armed fanatic jewish israelis who i thought going out of. so i think he ducked was his bet and he continued to support free speech and until today he's quiet about the fanaticism and the violence of those people and this is what eventually led to the attacks on al aqsa mosque about the acts of the people in general 70 eviction or that them sort of fiction of residence within the with end of it and he said not quite to the city and lead us to the deterioration that we're seeing today in gaza and the rest of. his bet has been all the time that if
6:21 pm
he loses his. it would end up in jail like his predecessor it would almost was also accused of corruption and he ended up in jail i was accused of corruption fraud misuse of office 3 major chart. is that i think almost everyone i know serious that is norris do well that when the prosecutor would get the new general it is different charges you would like that george a prime minister you would end up in jail ok the only way you could avoid jim is that he stays on the prime minister and change the law in order to stay for the time being yes not succeeded but if this thing continues he might just do ok good to talk to will talk to a little later i'm sure here on this special news hour or indeed in our next news are a little later here on al-jazeera if you're just joining us here on al-jazeera let's just remind you what's going on that we are focusing this news hour on one story and one story only what's going on across the border between israel and gaza israel continuing to bombard the gaza strip with artillery shells and their raids as it
6:22 pm
stepping up this deployment of troops and tanks near the besieged palestinian enclave at least 122 palestinians including 31 children have been killed more than 100 people have been wounded since the current hostilities split up on monday hundreds of palestinian families have taken shelter in schools the in northern gaza to escape the israeli artillery fire we've been reporting from nablus ramallah and also gaza itself as well as bethlehem you can see what's going on there on the ground in nablus from a live shot there it has been as is the way with this situation between israel and hamas israel and across the border into gaza it has been a 24 hour period since the last time. we kind of covered this of been flow of we've seen tear gas being dropped from israeli drone aircraft we have seen
6:23 pm
israeli military firing reportedly firing rubber coated bullets and also stealing coated bullets we have seen inaccurate reporting saying that an incursion had begun and then the word king. from the israeli military saying that they had put that there to get people to move away from the border area people are already leaving the border area anyway because the palestinians suspect that something is just about to happen 24 hours ago we were doing interviews here on al-jazeera we were talking to guests and they were saying this was a softening up process ahead of something else happening or mr netanyahu is just signalling his intent and his desire not to step back from where they are at the moment those pictures live from nablus to show you the latest live as well from ramallah that abraham our correspondent at the top of the hour taking us through what's going on there every so often in ramallah off camera but all night
6:24 pm
you hear cheering and chanting and that's people looking in on what's going on right now when the palestinian protesters who are throwing rocks and stones at the israeli military off to the right hand side of that shot they managed to grab some tear gas or a tear gas canister and kind of projectile it back the way towards the israeli military you can see the guy in the red t. shirt guy in the black t. shirt. catapulting stones and rocks probably no more than 5100 meters if they're lucky that's where the fighting back with so that's the latest from ramallah i'm just wondering if we can just give you a very very quick sense of what's going on in bethlehem and gaza as well let's just go let's just have 15 seconds of there we go bethlehem bottom right. israeli armored personnel carrier land rover type vehicle there on the streets
6:25 pm
stationary gaza we've seen we just lost that image of gaza there but we have seen over the past. few hours drone aircraft hope for being there not sure if their intelligence gathering or if they're the ones. dropping tear gas in gaza as well will take a live update from gaza a little later here on this news that we are we got the shot back for you you can see what's going on there in the skies above not very much at the moment although our reporting staff there in gaza telling us that people are moving to the north of gaza because that immediate central area they are worried that they are an easy target for israeli military well as the violence entered its 5th day residents in gaza and surrounded by rubble and what's left of their homes and their businesses these are the scenes showing the immediate aftermath of israeli airstrikes hundreds of families have taken shelter in un run schools in northern
6:26 pm
gaza to escape israeli artillery fire that of it there is a lot of shelling in the children are all afraid even as adults have been in war since our childhood we are afraid and cannot bear it anymore is there no not that we were planning to leave during the night but israeli drones and jets kept bombarding us at daylight we finally started moving in we rented to schools we could not believe the way our children were screaming they wanted to leave and we were shaking for them when we woke up we found everything behind us destroyed there's nothing left al-jazeera. joins us live from gaza what's been going on there in the last hour or so. so every minute we have updates . unusual our columnist just a few seconds ago knew about roger has been fired from gaza into southern israel we could hear in the background explosions of the israeli iron dome system
6:27 pm
intercepting that rockets are being fired from gaza. the last israeli attack was just 200 meters from our office when the israeli fighting jets fired their heavy rockets on a bank that located properly in the center of the gaza strip just a few steps from the biggest hospital in gaza the shape of one. another development that the bank of blood in gaza has been appealing launching appeals for public seeking blood donation because the hospitals are running out of blood units because of the wave of injured people arriving to the hospital from all over the gaza strip . the ministry of health says that the health system is collapsing because of. 15 or after 15 years of blockade on 3
6:28 pm
walls 'd and less than 10 years they appealed the humanitarian organizations seeking looking for. medical supplies some of the international. humanitarian are going to his organization have already son sent somebody called supplies to the hospitals because of the engine need for such disposable drugs egypt also announced that it will open rafah that a minute from tomorrow to receive injuries from people from gaza. on the other hand. the opposite of the. bomb being from air on ground under north of the guard the for hundreds of millions they had they were forcibly evacuated their homes. and take from united nation schools.
6:29 pm
still discussing through to using humanitarian help for the people who are facing no. school stuff what officially the israeli military their line is with this conflict the same as it's been with previous conflicts the line is we are not bombing the people of palestine we are not bombing palestinians we are targeting hamas installations do we know if they are successfully destroying how mass installations or are they simply or does it appear and i stress the word appear as if they are just bombing willy nilly they are just bombing any place they must clearly be going after what they believe to be how mass locations. well you know when we when the minister of health says that 122 palestinians killed
6:30 pm
including 32 children and 20 women. i don't think that this indications show or explain that they are acute and that they are doing what they what they said. the structure of the gaza strip is a bit complicated because as weeks painted for gaza is a very small overcrowded populated area which means that if any of the houses by the israeli army and are using by the way of 16 that using fighting jets drones are silly and they know that gaza is over populated and overcrowded so whenever they hit with 16. a crowded area and refugee camp like a bridge or like in job out of course even if they hit the target directly but still they know the. old area or the residential areas will be affected and will be
6:31 pm
damaged accordingly there will be. damages and there will be victims in case they hit the target directly the finished day and beit hanun for example 9 should 9 palestinian children that were killed from the fittest israeli strike. because. it was believed that they were chasing a fighter belonged to one of the armed groups so. it should be the israelis would hold the sophisticated and complicated and modern technology it's expected that they could be even more precise and more tactically say. ok many thanks. reporting live from gaza well the israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu says israel is fighting a war course on 2 fronts and he warns the military operation against hamas will continue as. i said that we would exact
6:32 pm
a very heavy price from hamas and the other terrorist organizations we are doing so and we will continue to do so with great force the final word has not been said and this operation will continue as long as necessary. ok i'm going to talk to she is a palestinian are to she's been living in turkey for the past 4 years but returned to gaza just before ramadan to visit family she joins us now from gaza city well it matter welcome to the news hour here on al-jazeera there has been bombing around where you are you are right now just explain to us what happened and i mean peace at least i can say that it's going on is a crisis as you know i thought were thousands eat and asked for to you and i could say and my family saying that this what's going on is much worse and the previous worse i mean there are not start an attack it is a recent shootings that are really in the city where i live there has been nothing
6:33 pm
tyrants from that gun groups. and also prominent airplanes. in fact my friends in the north and we are getting nearer to me and to leave their homes he spoke a few months. now that i know the aid is exam massacre and it's reached that. makes me wonder if. it's and it's warm. do you feel that you've got to stay there or perhaps you don't have a choice you are there and you are there until however we want to term this or whatever we want to call it comes to a natural conclusion. but i don't really feel like to mystical and i mean yesterday in. our mind in statements saying that israel has the right to self-defense and this means that israel will not be held accountable arms it's
6:34 pm
committing against this it's that there isn't a cancer cell and really not optimistic and it's yours that this is not going to end anywhere. but the comments from mr biden were kind of predictable given that he spent the best part of what 3540 years being a friend of israel. that's correct. and the israeli line is today what it's always been they are saying we are simply reacting to what hamas is doing. i mean it all started in church have not mean hundreds of families are getting worst at the arms including and quite family for their last the last half of their home in 1009 saw it all started this way and this nic wrestling is continuing
6:35 pm
in the inland empire and if you had a chance to talk to your own political leaders there in garza what would you say to them. well i don't think i got an answer for it it's i don't really want you to share the story and in my experience here being like a cat every single hour i mean it's that the what is i mean i'm i can't recall a response going on and the situation is getting worse by anthony so i really hope that we're going and i hope that international interview and apply pressure and it's her. thinking her think ok we'll leave it there thanks very much for joining us from gaza city and a difficult difficult time clearly but we do appreciate you making time to talk to us. meanwhile a funeral is being held in gaza for
6:36 pm
a family of 6 who were killed by an israeli strike the mother and father and 4 children died overnight when an israeli warplane targeted their home. my brother roughened was president may god have mercy on him he his wife and 4 children there was no warning or anything 5 rockets his wife was pregnant they have no mercy neither for children nor adults may god have mercy on them. doctor. is an official at gaza's ministry of health he joins us now from gaza city doctor welcome to the news hour here on a serious or how close is the health system to complete failure in gaza. well if they continue that civilians and continue attacking domestic zones certainly they had system would collapse because we've been living under siege for 15 years and could want to for one and a half year and today this is the 5th day of this aggression how do you think they
6:37 pm
take the how are you then said population into domestic that is on the mystic zones for that reason but they continue today we have 900 wounded and we have almost 150 children among them apart from those who were killed what 122 again 31 of them were children the problem is that if those numbers continue mounting like that in the coming few days it would certainly be a collapse and there will be no face in the palestinian ministry of health the maximum number that we have today's $2200.00 beds in all the hospitals of gaza strip if we have having hundreds every day for short within a week or less they would be for the patients and we don't know what to do with the others but you know where the photos are closed today and we have no hopper we have no airport we have no nothing to do and they are by the way they are still attacking health facilities yesterday we had about we had about attacking a private health care clinic or dallas and they have attacked actually 2 hospitals one in beit hanoun city and the other one is the indonesians and they have attacked
6:38 pm
arms through an area near one of the cutting teen sent out of i look at that for those who want it done with but one of us from outside for that reason health facilities are not safe and we have children medication due to the siege and because i want to. make and the other thing now with this what is coming today and nobody knows by the way i what i'm going to be finished because they are still waiting by land operation and you know now people are stuck again for the other time they are leaving their homes league and going. to schools over on the land other schools that's pretty miserable and you know believe me for the 5th day we have not nobody have was able to sleep in the last 5 days because of the heavy artillery bombardment and. rob plains and the navy have the same time stank they are using oh i'm grown i'm not leaving our skies for 24 hours a day so you cannot sleep you cannot rest you cannot be next you are living on the pension and you don't know who is walking in the street near you you don't know driving their car near you they me at that anybody i'm the only and then the
6:39 pm
victims of this is explaining why the children are buying i mean 31 child out of 122 people killed it means of who are those who are killed are children or even more where that 3 this or that is are stuck and they have to committing those crimes the army way every time with that binyamin netanyahu is willing to stay in a bit out of prison and so that's why he decided. to save himself and i suppose a doctor of us we do understand however that the border with egypt is about to be opened either tonight's overnight or 1st thing tomorrow morning from a humanitarian perspective will that be enough or could that be enough to ease the pressure on the medical system in gaza and on those medical workers the doctors and the nurses in gaza. for sure opening the border at any point of time we had the palestinians to get the relief from that pressure but again on the other hand it would take a long fire and to send a patient would seriously injured and serious condition that the condition to send
6:40 pm
them in intensive care unit i mean those are very limited you know so we have to save them we have to offer the 1st aid in the others you know husbands with just for that reason there should be a hand to be extended to the palestinians in the biosphere measure we're allowing us it would expand our capacity and to expand outward cities will receive more number of cases and why don't they stop killing civilians were gone they stop attacking domestic areas probably of people full of civilians that still insist think that civilian houses for that reason this is explaining why you are seeing all those hundreds of numbers in the only if my mother of 5 days. your right this at the sharp end of this increasingly ugly ugly 5 day conflict since day 5 today we're probably going to head into day 6 they 7 day 8 because there doesn't seem to be any desire on either side to pull the plug on this to stop this what
6:41 pm
is it that we can use to explain the confidence on the part of hamas and the determination on the part of the israeli military to keep this going why is nobody saying ok we will step back from the brink and we will draw breath and maybe the killing on both sides will stop. ok 1st of all if you run when you just compare the number of so the numbers of those killed in this time and the numbers of those killed on the other side of the border on the other side we have 9 killed and here we have we have one on 124 the number of foreign that there are less than 100 ago and on and on under it and you have 9 on that you cannot compare you cannot say you cannot compare how mass with a lot of just on the strongest army in the region there is no way to combat it by the way and by the way guys that did not start this conflict from the beginning
6:42 pm
they have attacked the people domestic in jettisoning they wanted to take the i'm not of the land from their homes and that's why everybody was appealing for guys that will extend a helping dad just to let really understand sea fleet saving their homes we have never ever stopped of this conflict we are in a sense we want to do is we are not loving blood we don't want to kill anybody well again it's killing any human being that's again is our believe that's against our norms that's against our concepts but the problem is that they are preventing us and their original study the beating of the you know when you speak about their magic luck so it's something which is from our point of view is something which is really previous lives that religion no muslim can said we don't want that most would like to be as if they keep watching that mosque and provoking the people affecting their plans inside the most during the holy month of ramadan it means what they were and then putting the at in the koran not what the hell are they expecting this at will defend itself and we scratch you just open the way the you
6:43 pm
know that civilians you have the rule with no safe at all to flee or to affect the weight and if you have which is going to the military by those or even who have no land to go in tell me in the midnight if you move by you have for sure they want to back you with the i think any moving object on them least so that's what for that reason there should be a sort of international protection for our people and they those people who were best weapons with those machines of high technology just instigated weapons i hear you know this is the day before yesterday. it was like 6 am and i usually we used to have the sound of the warplanes and then after that you hear the explosion now and i was just astonished we have the big explosions without any weisel they want may let out on i think that us that they have used the high stick not a few of the f. 35 megan the united states that this could be going to gaza and it was attacking us from the west bank like 100 meet you not me that far from gaza so you don't see any any you don't see any you don't hear any words you suddenly have except
6:44 pm
littlejohn's without any threats and for sure this is exactly why we have not i am not the one that in 5 days ok i'm going to push you this because we are losing we are beginning to win the lottery not opposite the line to you there we go is deteriorating but. thank you very much for joining us from gaza we do appreciate your time ok you're watching a special news hour here on al-jazeera what you're looking at right now. on the streets of bethlehem despite international calls for an immediate stop to all of us till it sees this is the reality as we draw towards the end of the daylight hours of day 5 of this increasingly ugly nasty conflict. including from just in the last 1000 minutes or so from the french president. emanuel also from the united nations chief. despite that the israeli prime minister
6:45 pm
benjamin netanyahu saying the offensive will continue and i quote as needed to restore calm in the state of israel hamas firing another volley of rockets towards israel today hitting the city of ashkelon in the early hours of friday so that's the latest situation on the ground in bethlehem swirling around in the breeze israeli military there in the foreground of camera shots with what looks like an israeli armored personnel carrier vehicle coming towards the camera with his headlights blaring. a no man's land with a couple of probably teenagers late teens early twenty's off to the left hand side of the shot and you can see a group of people with what looks like one steak a wagon type ambulance or paramedics type vehicle the top left in that congested area with people milling around trying to work up what's going on
6:46 pm
right now to abraham is our correspondent in ramallah and we've been monitoring the live pictures from where you are and again there's this almost like a running battle between local palestinians slingshot stones and rocks towards the israeli military on the right hand side of the shot we've been looking at. yes there are going and abs and flows the palestinian protesters are throwing rocks and also molotov cocktails that they've prepared before the protest and are throwing them at the israeli army just a few minutes ago we've seen them also use fireworks and we think it's part of that ways to confuse the israeli drone drone that is carrying multiple tear gas bombs and it's throwing them at the protesters so they are kind of using basic means to control their heavily armed soldiers that are over there and then when the soldiers come in through
6:47 pm
a live ammunition or shoot rubber coated steel bullets or tear gas we see the palestinians moving back towards where the protests have started so it goes on abs and flows and it's important to tell our viewers how protesters view these confrontations they know that if they have a rock or a molotov cocktail or a marble even that sometimes is used it's not going to be affecting the israeli soldiers or putting them in danger they know that the israeli army is heavily armed and they have snipers that can target palestinians they even have a term for the palestinians know that sometimes there is what's called here as kneecapping soldiers that are targeting the knees because once the knees hit they can. if you can make sure that the palestinian are the person that's being shot is paralyzed and or crippled so they're very you know that there is
6:48 pm
a great danger that is associated with protesting but many were telling us that they've lost hope they want to confront the occupation they want to show the soldiers that they're not afraid that they are fighting for having freedom for having a state of their own and they want to show the world they're they're not afraid this is i think that important message that many protesters have been telling us over the few past days and they tell us that they want to keep doing this until palestine is free to get the sense the need to if people are behaving in the way that the palestinians behind you are behaving at the moment those young men because it's always predominantly young men who who behave like that that there is that sense that they've got nothing to lose and there is also a way of behaving off the back of you know we've been talking to israeli military analysts over the past few hours here because people were based in israel and they
6:49 pm
were saying look israel is taking on one of the most sophisticated proponents of guerrilla warfare any place in the middle east but those young men behind you that you've been filming and talking about for us that's not guerrilla warfare that's teenagers that's young men in their twenty's who wouldn't know how to carry out a guerrilla conflict all they know is how to throw rocks and stones because that's all they've got. yes and palestinians have been telling us that they want to show that that imbalance of power that they are only armed with stolen is only on good one out of cork till's but they want if they are losing hope at having a palestinian state they want to make sure that they are not making the occupation very easy for israel let's put it this way they want and let's remember that these are young people who were born after the palestinian authority was established
6:50 pm
after the also accords were signed and there haven't seen any hope for for freedom for a state you told so for them they've grown up hearing their leaders talk about having their own state with these jerusalem as its capital and the fact that they're going to have a better economic conditions or even the mere. right of being free but all they're seeing on the ground is growing illegal israeli settlements growing attacks by some of those that often go on indicted so there is a sense of impunity when it comes to these settlers and these people they are would tell you that the very last they are hoping to build their state on then the view those have been promising them to build their state on our shrinking and they've been telling us also that many israeli settlers have been getting more audacity over the past few years to attack palestinians even if they are in their villages
6:51 pm
even if they are not confronting the occupation so these people here will tell you that if we stay calm if we do nothing if we are staying very pacifist then we're going to be displaced from here so it's seen here as a way of steadfastness and proving that they are here and they're there they're not going to be leaving anyway thank you so much that it will be reporting live from ramallah let's just live pictures with another conversation with senior political analyst bashar mo and one for. that strikes me as being slightly curious and maybe worthy of investigation is this why is it when we listen to israeli military analysts to listen to them you would think this conflict only goes back as far as in the context of gaza as far as the birth of her mass and the genesis of how mass was out of egypt we know this that's that's a matter of record in the late 1980 s.
6:52 pm
around about the time of the 1st intifada so why is it that israel clearly wants to kind of time frame this locket into a bubble of time that only goes back to the late eighty's early ninety's. this is an excellent point and i think goes to the heart of the israeli government spin their talking points is are meant to address these are in the public and the west an optical opinion about why these are radical islamist fanatics the palestinians and hence we cannot deal with them just like you could indeed with isis is also one and if you are not better off the 911 this became more and more of these rain propaganda trying to basically poor any any muslim out of pride and set them to try to do that with with how much it's a very convenient escape for them especially when speaking to the western public opinion and that's why it's also possible for them to justify that kind of bombing
6:53 pm
and that kind of that kind of siege that they inflict on the palestinians and by the way i just want to address something very important question that you posed and i you know it's for of course heartfelt to hear the personal testimonies of a lot of seniors on the ground in gaza the west bank on solid support but just in terms of military history to understand the israeli military strategy in gaza specifically you need we need to understand that this is not dressed that it's not the 2nd world war israel is not trying to copy bomb gaza and said that israel is not hiroshima it's not trying to nuke israel knows that it has certain limits within the international community what it could do it what people under occupation because believe it or not israel is bound to protect the palestinian under its occupation as an occupying power according to the 4th geneva convention so
6:54 pm
imagine that a docs the palestinians under occupation should be protected by the occupying powers duckie by in power should even make sure that they got to fix a nation for the likes of covert themselves of what we. i'm not in the middle of the 2nd world war as there is not meaning to a carpet bomb gaza it's not going after all the gaza city as if it did there would be hundreds of thousands of dead palestinians in gaza but what is it exactly trying to do you ask whether they're trying to have mass starred i think they're trying to do more and he it is right the nuance in destructive what we know from previous israeli wars in gaza and elsewhere is that they're trying to. basically break the infrastructure that how mass depends on the government in gaza depends on in order to they are trying to make sure that they cannot make to administer thieves and the various governmental and whatever economic faucets that is within gaza
6:55 pm
distorted so that have mass could not easily arise from this war without having spending years trying to simply deal with this that this sets of the population and so here it is yet another very important goal of the sort of the strategy is to make sure that it's trying to ensure that gazans tired of how much they make sure that gaza in stone on how must turn on one of the ruling just not get wanted the palestinian to turn on arafat's and the palestinian authority after the 2000 and divide that by breaking the various economic faucets and infrastructure in ramallah and the rest of the us and this is usually a very small at the ready successful strategy when you want to turn a population against their leaders against that popularly it has a price and the price is people starve people die people are hospitalized
6:56 pm
children are traumatized children become the next generation of fighters so while the israelis think they're being smart by breaking the infrastructure in gaza i think they're simply traumatizing an entire nation into becoming get more assistance more stuff and move more you know i must say hateful of that occupier the israelis keep talking about the textbooks in independence then yet that it goes it's not the textbooks that's making a new generation of palestinians hate israel it's what we're seeing today it's the bombing it's the humiliation it's the dehumanization of an entire generation it's the header that israel is bringing on the children of gaza. many thanks bashar a senior political analyst joining us here on this special news let's wrap up this 60 minutes of a special news. where we started it with live pictures coming to us out of ramallah
6:57 pm
you can see there the aftermath of clearly tear gas having been dropped from those drone aircraft that our correspondent on the ground. immediately in the vicinity they've been reporting on that over the past few days. let's just show you what's going on right now. as well we've got a camera. there similar scenes in nablus this is unique in the history of the relationship between gaza palestinians and israel the israeli military this particular 5 day of death and destruction is unique because we're seeing technology being used in a way it's never been used before we have we are also seeing hamas better armed with missiles than they have arguably ever been before we will get you right
