9:02 pm
well that was the scene just a couple of hours ago when the building took a direct hit the building has residential apartments and a number of media outlets including al-jazeera and the associated press it had been evacuated following a one hour warning from the israeli army in a statement cell jazeera condemned the bombing and said it was a clear act to stop journalist reporting on events israel's ground forces have continued to fire heavy artillery into the besieged enclave 140 palestinians have now been killed since the offensive began on monday one person was killed in a neighborhood of tel aviv after a device exploded in the streets nearby buildings were damaged by the shrapnel protests are underway in the palestinian territory and around the world to
9:03 pm
demonstrations have been taking place in ramallah in the occupied west bank where palestinians are marking neck bud day that's when palestinians were forcibly displaced from their homes for the establishment of israel the palestinian red crescent says 29 palestinians have been injured by israeli security forces as of saturday 17 of them were shot with live ammunition and it him is in the occupied west bank we'll talk to her in just a moment or 2 but 1st let's go to stuff what. in gaza so suff what we're coming to the end of such a difficult day there just so looking at the broader picture that building that you and your jazeera colleagues were based in it's no longer there. yes it's low longer there but we are still here we. we stopped it immediately to fix on to find alternatives to go and. keep reporting from gaza. of
9:04 pm
course was difficult for everybody dot suddenly you'll have rethink you'll have had you know you should leave it behind you and just stay in the seat was difficult time for everybody even for those people who live in this building. in this building in this office so the. sort of yes we'll just see it on we are not a big we moved outside we we are applying you know the emergency plans for reporting we are trying to be safe no place is safe in gaza but well to trying to do our best where we are here now we are along the coastline of gaza we few minutes ago we heard the israeli navy firing there. the coastline of the gaza strip. from my our understanding these. things are hitting. in the
9:05 pm
north of gaza city just before the navy. there were some. artillery shells landing 1 in the north of gaza city we we have we learned one of these artillery shells landed in one of the houses and we don't talk information about the developments of such of such attack or the target earlier we could see military wing of hamas and islamic jihad firing their intensive barges of rockets towards longer range cities like. tel aviv like but shivah they have intensified their fire in response. immediately after. is it then she. was hit they said in a statement done. by keeping. out of the.
9:06 pm
buildings it means that they have crossed over the lid that it lies. their response as they said it will be in tel aviv by firing more rockets. also the most significant development today in addition to hitting the shoring i'll just you know a building or a just you know office and one of the another development for the 1st time in the last 6 days. that are really. fighting just destroyed the house of hamas senior political. this is the 1st time that they had or thought to get political figure out is. that a sponsor of this. dark. or 'd destroying the house of. just minutes off that it undefined out of more of a rajah's of rockets towards southern israel specifically are. in the north and the
9:07 pm
south of israel in gaza as you could see in the bargain on the streets are empty people are. for almost 6 days since the beginning of this. 6 days of escalation they go out only for emergency needs to buy food. and medicine for their children hospitals also are appealing because they say that they are not the kind of time that they cannot deal with this huge number of injured are arriving to the hospital number of people killed according to the has been 140 people killed including 40 children. so for many thanks. reporting live for us. from gaza well the al-jazeera media network has reacted to the bombing of its office in gaza calling it a barbaric act in
9:08 pm
a statement al-jazeera said the bombing is a clear act to stop journalists from conducting their sacred duty to inform the world and reporter events on the ground it calls on all media and human rights institutions to join forces in denouncing this ruthless bombing and to hold the government of israel accountable for deliberately targeting journalists gary pruitt is the c.e.o. of the associated press he says israel bombing the media building will impact information coming out of gaza but he said the a.p. will continue to report the story. i can tell you that we've been in that building for 50 about 15 years with our bureau we certainly had no sense that hamas was there we would like to see the evidence we're not sure whether hamas was there or not we don't know but i can tell you the impact will be that the world will know less about what's going on in gaza because that building was leveled that had great sightlines to show the world what was going on in gaza and that will be lost our
9:09 pm
brave staff was able to get out in time and to salvage most of our equipment so a.p. will continue to report the story it will impair our ability but we will continue to report to the world what is happening in gaza we had 12 journalists in that building but all got out safely you know were the associated press and we deal in facts so i can't speculate as to what the motivation was but i can tell you the impact will be to reduce the flow of information coming from gaza we'll continue to tell the story but this hurts our ability to do it they were able to get out to safety they were able to get most of the equipment armored cars video cameras 6 cetera they went home. is any place safe right now in gaza and but as safe as they can be and they're continuing to report the story but it was a shocking development and we are working with we're learning as much as we can
9:10 pm
from the israeli government we've engaged with the u.s. state department most importantly we're keeping our staff safe and we're continuing to report this story for the world. gary pruitt the c.e.o. of the associated press talking to us just a little bit earlier we've just flipped to our live pictures there for you from bethlehem you can see there. that's interesting it looks like a little laser light shining towards the camera. a scene replicating really what we've seen in the hours of daylight there in bethlehem you can see a medley of people lights flashing lights off there in the middle distance off into the distance. i'm just wondering if that tear gas being fired you know that looks like tear gas we've seen that there as well under the cover of darkness and also during the daylight hours as well so that's the latest from bethlehem and see the
9:11 pm
very close to the camera i suspect that's israeli military wandering around we've got a clear shot there was somebody were in combat fatigues and protective clothing you can see there and it's really contingent of the police officers the military will be the israeli army them moving from camera right to camera left and they're also coming back in towards the foreground they'll be monitoring very closely what's going on in the distant part of that locked up shop coming to us from bethlehem. well families of the victims of the airstrikes have been holding funerals for their loved ones across gaza a warning some us may find some images in lower burden manny's reports disturbing. at the funeral of a child in the city of prophet in southern gaza i'm a woman in shock said only children playing with their toys mothers grandmothers and families left inconsolable. innocent victims the

days of heavy youth radio strikes and artillery fire that destroyed homes and neighborhoods. what is this baby done it we were sitting safely at home we didn't hear a warning rocket out. house got hit violently why why why do they bomb houses and their residence. in the northern beit hanoun neighborhood people search through rubble for their belongings. gaza is home to about 2000000 people in an enclave under israeli blockade there are few places to escape the bombs glass that is probably the most densely populated spot on earth it has been under 14 years of air or sea and land blockade it is the place where the spare is extremely high and were civilians are trapped. to throw the bombs many children as sheltering in schools but they still don't feel safe. and i'm not that we ran out of the house after the
9:13 pm
air attacks and our house was bombed we fled to the school we're told at the smoke from the bombs poisonous we don't know what the poison is and we only know that the thick smoke after the explosion was very choking for what purpose in the united states on thursday house democrat rashida to play up made the motional statement to congress reading the words of a palestinian mother i want to read something a mother named the man and has a wrote 2 days ago she said quote tonight i put the kids to sleep in our bedroom so that when we die we die together. as al-jazeera spoke to him on about the message it was interrupted as bombs exploded nearby you can hear it actually while we were speaking there is loud sounds of bumping the. people who are living refined grains. of every single day. we wake up to reply to messages like iraq. and. worse here
9:14 pm
every single night we are. hamas and its allies have responded to the attacks by firing a barrage of rockets from inside gaza the. israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu says the bombardment will not end soon. as bombs fall rescue workers take the survivors after a house was hit and are shot a refugee camp on friday killing 10 members of the family funerals are taking place throughout gaza for those killed which includes dozens of children for those who survived the bombs they're now in the traumatized and terrified of further attacks . laura but among the al jazeera live to my colleague nadir ibra him who's in ramallah in the occupied west bank and it just looking back over your reporting of this day day 6 as it draws to
9:15 pm
a close obviously the protesters that you've been reporting on they still feel energized enough angry enough displaced enough to keep their demonstrations going into another day and even beyond that. there are even more calls for more protests on sunday afternoon that coincide with the u.n. expected meeting of the u.n. security council so palestinians want to use this opportunity when the world is watching and not always the world is paying attention to what's going on in palestine according to what some of these protesters have told us they say that they want to seize this opportunity and they feel that they've been more united now in. this latest round of escalation that they want to raise their voices those an occupied east jerusalem those in the occupied west bank or indivisible gaza strip so they feel that they are one people separated by many and many israeli
9:16 pm
checkpoints and if some of them are telling us of this is the only way they have throwing rocks at some. soldiers near israeli military checkpoints then so be it we've seen several confrontations in many areas in the occupied west bank including nablus. bethlehem and how broad some of these confrontations happened near israeli checkpoints some near illegal israeli settlements and others like the one the pictures you were just showing from bethlehem are near an israeli military checkpoint but there is also the israeli built barriers the separation barrier that is it is in bethlehem built of cement blocks very high cement blocks separating bethlehem from jerusalem there are 2 refugee camps surrounding that area and we often see the young people going from the refugee camp to these confrontation points they were telling us that they were fed up of the palestinian authority they
9:17 pm
don't believe that it's been helping them fight the israeli occupation all in all in today's confrontations that the red crescent has crescent has the. did the number of those injured to 165. there's a large number of them who were hit by live ammunition and now going back to the point of the palestinian authority the palestinian news agency has just reported that the palestinian president mahmoud abbas has received a call from the u.s. president joe biden and in its he urged the u.s. to intervene to stop what he said is radio assault against the palestinian people and he also added to his willingness to deal with the tips this is a body that consists of the e.u. russia and the u.s. and it's often been involved in the direct them in direct negotiations between the
9:18 pm
palestinians and israelis this where the negotiations is very problematic in the palestinian street palestinians would tell you that while the palestinians are negotiating israel is imposing facts on the ground that make the very idea of making a palestinian state almost impossible because of the continued expansion of illegal israeli settlements on the other israeli measures on the ground no going back to that call between the palestinian president and the u.s. president joe biden according to official news agency they say that biden has said that stressed the importance of the escalation and we know that there was a u.s. envoy had to armitage who landed in tel aviv on friday so it is a wait and see now how these diplomatic efforts if they're going to be successful. thank you very much in. ramallah. well israeli prime minister benjamin
9:19 pm
netanyahu as we've been hearing has been speaking with the u.s. president joe biden about the ongoing conflict that comes a day ahead of that united nations meeting to discuss the violence kristen salumi is at the u.n. headquarters in new york we'll talk to her shortly 1st let's go to patty call him in washington so patty mr biden talking to benjamin netanyahu and also now the palestinians which i guess is significant but might get lost in all the white noise of diplomacy here. well it really depends on these readouts that we're waiting for we're told that they should be coming out momentarily this is the traditional statements that the white house puts out describing what happened on the call that what analysts are going to be looking for in pretty much everyone in the region is to see if the language changes at all after this attack on the media because the president has been very supportive of benjamin netanyahu actions throughout from the beginning not criticizing really at all saying they really
9:20 pm
haven't gone too far so is that still going to be the case he's getting a lot of pressure from the more progressive side of the democratic party senator bernie sanders has an op ed in the new york times today where he raised the possibility of withholding military aid to israel because it's there's a provision in the law that says it cannot be used for human can be pulled back if it's used for human rights violations we're seeing letters from jewish members of the democratic caucus in the house saying that palestinians basically saying this is all started because the israeli police actions in the mosque and also talking about the forced. her to settlers so the president facing more pressure from the left exactly is he going to change his stance we'll know more when we have the readout if it doesn't change at all then that will tell you everything you need to know but we also do know that the secretary of defense also got on the phone today speaking with his counterpart so this is obviously something that is being
9:21 pm
talked about we believe the president is in the oval office we know that because there's a marine stationed outside and that usually only happens if he's at his desk working and so hopefully we'll have more be able to decipher a little bit more when we get the exact readout of the call from the white house understood patty many thanks particle in the live for us in washington for more on the diplomatic angle to all of this let's go to kristen salumi who's at the united nations there chris and so what we get from this meeting at the u.n. tomorrow. well i think before we even get to tomorrow it's important to lay out what it took to get to this point we are seeing a security council that has yet to speak with one voice on the situation in the middle east as it has been developing there's been 2 closed door meetings there have been pushes for statements all of which have been blocked by the united states essentially saying that they wanted to give time for behind the scenes
9:22 pm
diplomacy at the highest levels to work of course as they were making that argument the violence was only escalating and the pressure on them was growing as well so now we have after an attempt to have an open meeting on friday. and now been meeting being called for sunday at which we will hear from the secretary general of the united nations antonio good terror's the special coordinator for the middle east and all of the member states on the security council who would like to speak as well as israel and palestine the question remains though will they take any unified action to back up calls that have been coming from the u.n. for a end to the violence for mediation and for a reckoning on the underlying issues that helped the situation even get to this place and i as far as that goes still not clear but a meeting will take place and that many here see as
9:23 pm
a good 1st step albeit one that they were pushing for a week ago and only now is coming into to happen is the u.n. here kristin in effect playing catch up because we've had 6 days of violence 6 days of death and destruction 6 days of people being killed and. we've we seem to have this situation of inertia there in the u.n. in new york with people bringing to the table the to the diplomatic table competing loyalties from outside the u.n. . it's a very difficult situation here for the united nations the issue of israel palestine is one that is. has been on the agenda for the security council since the united nations founding in the united nations is very involved in humanitarian efforts inside the occupied territories there's
9:24 pm
a big responsibility on the part of many diplomats here and u.n. workers to address the situation there so their inability to do so has been very frustrating for many of the people that we speak to behind the scenes the united states of course very protective of israel when it comes to these issues we know just friday night finally the u.s. ambassador to the u.n. linda thomas greenfield finally broke her silence on the issue and we're told that she has been working behind the scenes but publicly have said nothing and she in a tweet late on friday night said that we need to create room for diplomacy and dialogue we will continue to work tirelessly with the u.n. regional partners towards a sustainable peace but you know for a lot of people it's just words when they are looking for some sort of relief for the situation on the ground in and granted the tools at the disposal of the security council are rather limited but
9:25 pm
a statement calling for calm was the 1st step that many were looking for and so far they just haven't been able to even do that the secretary general himself has been calling for that but again without the backing of the security council doesn't carry the same weight christine thank you very much christine something there for us here on the news reporting live out of the united nations marwan bashara is our senior political analyst so i guess that is one of the more significant conversations that mr biden has had in the past what 48 hours now not only has he now spoken to mr netanyahu he's also been talking to the palestinians is it your calculation that that might provide a source of some sort of emoluments influence on what's going on here. yes because i just heard also a long interview with. a hamas leader or the hamas leader. on another network and clearly there's more sin that if you were between how my son
9:26 pm
thought that this point and clearly thought that his becoming more outspoken and now that there is that call him with pres them by then i think the president might be a bit more energized you know it's keeps me why exactly after all these years of betrayals but president abbas has placed all of his eggs in the in washington's basket and he is waiting by the phone and he has been waiting what the point for 4 months now and now that he got his call perhaps you know he will start moving the question is it or that once that does happen and that say that is some sort of a statement on something and let's say that is some sort of a cease fire well then we'll hold. when it when we go back to the status quo ante and if and if we do then we're just basically on the clock until the next outbreak of violence happens because fundamentally the united states and
9:27 pm
the security council as well as the voting station know. and other parties need to start weighing in to try and resolve this issue that is more than 7 years old as christine was saying it says or does the united nations so this very last colonial issue this very festering issue that we see is getting from bad to worse as it's becoming more communitarian as we see more armed militias roaming the streets of mixed cities i think a diplomatic solution is you know it's late but certainly better than never mind however for people outside the region we've we've explained why the biden administration has had a kind of a low energy reaction to this overlaid with their diplomatic calling card which is international diplomacy as far as washington is concerned there has to pivot towards its relationship with china that's
9:28 pm
a given people outside the region people outside of our catchment area if you will here on al-jazeera they might not understand why the palestinian authority is so low energy when it comes to reacting to this kind of crisis because they should be shouldn't they be more high energy than this because if only because they've been through this so many more times before and palestinians turns the palestinian authority expecting a reaction and what they get is vanilla and then somebody is knowledge into saying something. well look to make it to make a long sort of short. present but history in presidents have made a strategic decision not to aid and support not to inspire not to lead and about but assume the pres abbas thinks that the 2000 uprising was the mental to a skinny in struggle and he's adamant not to be the other one he's now being dragged
9:29 pm
into one because hamas and the popular resistance the peaceful one in general so that basically you know try to take him out of his a cocoon but he is still insisting that only diplomacy works the problem with that and that's why the law and that she comes into play is that diplomacy has betrayed him he has sponsored this process since 1903 these that been the man behind the all slow process. but the 25 years of peace process so cool did not lead to nowhere in track but we know now is they used to be 70775000 settlers back in 1991 today there is some 700 thousands so clearly something is not working but here in mainz i've been that it has to be on a diplomacy fine but as any of my students in international issues will tell you
9:30 pm
diplomacy is a reflection of a balance of power of some sort on the ground especially and that is the kind of action that we've seen in jerusalem that we see in gaza that we're seeing definitely at ramallah nablus of other called the points in the west bank that create the kind of better balance in order to lead to a more equitable diplomacy so now there's a chance the palestinians feel more reinvigorated the israelis feel that they've done that bombing job you know finishing the job in gaza there is some momentum you know tragic as it as it is that is someone meant them and by that and mr sharon and other parts of the security council the quartet need to jump in because as i said earlier a cease fire is not going to do or how bus knows that and i bus knows i sent you a question that his political future is now at stake because with the up evil going on if this thing continues and the actions of the diplomatic moves to try and
9:31 pm
resolve this issue i don't think the palestinian authority has future i don't think peace has future i don't think 2 state solution is anything. that looks like resembling realistic and i think we will be in for a long long communal fights among palestinians and israelis were 7 millions of them palestinians live 7000000 jews live was with up mexico approximately 6 miles this no security council. no united nations nor united states and not nuclear power nor military power would be able to do so all once you have $7000000.00 people and not 7 in the 1000000 at each other's throats in mixed cities and mixed vantages and mixed regions there is no solution product that would definitely be a den or a form of a civil war moment to stay exactly where you are please by just want to take the next 30 seconds or so just to sum up where we are right now solidarity rallies of
9:32 pm
course being held around the world including here in doha we'll get a live update from that particular location in the cattery capital a little later i'm sure here on al-jazeera for you maybe not in this news hour but in the coming hours as well those scenes being mirrored around the world we've seen pro palestinian protests and demonstrations with something of a reported carnival atmosphere from sydney australia to baghdad in iraq. there we are you can see a hamas leader there talking in doha talking to the assembled people who've gone to the outskirts the immediate vicinity of the grand mosque in the cattery capital was a big protest in london as well the organizers of called for between 10 and 20000 people to attend the london metropolitan police force was saying it was 910000 a tense situation on the ground in bethlehem as usual we're getting used to seeing this kind of imagery coming to us from bethlehem as the 6 draws to
9:33 pm
a close in ramallah it all goes very very it goes super quiet in ramallah in bethlehem it seems to get more tense as people come out onto the streets under the cover of dark the very darkness rather they're very close there to an israeli military checkpoint which is kind of underneath our shot camera right let's go back to my one bashara main analyst who's putting all this in context for us just about your last answer there my one is that why people on social media particularly israeli even israeli social media and you know places that ordinarily would be on balance pro netanyahu things like the comments page on the jerusalem post today people quoting mr blinken for example saying or reheating what he has historically said and i quote which is palestinians and israelis deserve equal measures of freedom dignity security and prosperity for main things everyone
9:34 pm
deserves that of course wherever you are in the world but people are now saying well hang on is that an aspiration for 5 years from now 10 years from now 75 years from now why can't we have that starting today absolutely and you know when secretary blinken said this administration is working democracy and human rights at the center of foreign policy where. certainly not in palestine certainly no human rights are being respected in palestine centrally no democracy is being respected when news media outlets address is being bombarded and where is the condemnation i mean no but seriously i mean allow me here i mean where is the condemnation from berlin washington london paris and other places that the presumably are you know the it indeed the spokes person is this for governments
9:35 pm
for democracy and human rights when when a whole bunch of media outlets are bombed when it is that a speck of human rights when it comes to gaza where over to me and people live in a big prison and that is precisely why just going back to some of your comment that he only had about all these images from seeing you know and the rest of the world i'd like to introduce this new concept which i think is becoming more and more relevant to us not as you're much the social media you mention street demonstrations also court i'd like to call it the geopolitics of emotions yes it's a bit that keep but. there is new geopolitics of emotions happening when you see people in jordan moving in in big numbers towards the borders when you see people in lebanon looking towards the ports where they started when you see people in the mosques in various parts of the outer world when you see people demonstrating of various capitals in the end end end the world when you see the government of south africa the parliament of south africa saying this is a barbaric attack a but the palestinian people just you notice that in the popular in the popular in
9:36 pm
the public mind around the world the sort of dirty word the palestinian people is awakened that their human rights of the philistine people must be respected people feel like this is an extension of their all new rights in various parts of the world so a geo politics of emotions is really a gathering storm and this is not going to be easy to you know to to confront when we when we hear it in places like paris that the presidency is is blocking it's not getting permits for people to demonstrate in the republic of france this is the cornerstone this is the oldest democracy this is where you would think every person every citizen have the right to express themselves the only thing they could not express themselves on is a mistake in france so clearly this is becoming an international issue and the geopolitics of emotion. are really gathering storm which is an especially when you
9:37 pm
talk about a 1000000000 and a half muslims with a stake in some mosque in jerusalem at stake in jerusalem when palestine has always been this rallying cry for people around the world in the developing or the so-called 3rd world and those who suffered on the colonialism for all of this think not awaken this is a major thing and is there and you're not such and be paying attention the by dint of misfortune should be paid my. must be paying attention because this will end up burning go through one so it's brought them to put off the fires in palestine and try to reset you should before it gets out of control in palestine israel and the rest of the region and the world marwan thank you very much mo in the shadow of the chief political analyst let's take you back to the cattery capital doha a big protest the appropriateness to protest in the grounds of the grand mosque in
9:38 pm
doha the hamas leader ismail haniyeh is addressing the crowd there we have a translation let's just get a sense of what's being said. and. caught in the roots for vehicle and killing the palestinians and attacking people in the west bank and everywhere today there is distance will not give in and will always be on top of the mountain carrying the soul. i know not carrying the sword and shield for. god when brothers and sisters look at the beast and huge. that has been besieged for 15 years 15 years under siege from every direction this year is gaza today you have imposed a curfew throughout the zionist entity.
9:39 pm
this resistance today. the journalists don't make. said about the rockets. and the resistance. you know. one of the zionist. gen journalists said that dish is burning mistake is burning. we say. what the. sections of their existence and. brigades. what they earn. is the program through which. what you saw through the program. but
9:40 pm
what we have got is even greater. we defend you with arsenal. we defend you with our souls and grow. the leader talking to the assembled palestinian supporters in and we'll talk about the suspect in the coming hours here on al-jazeera let's go back tomorrow shout out to syria's senior political analyst and just go back to the pick up that point you were talking there about emanuel is interesting isn't it because his international diplomatic fingerprints are somebody who's loud and proud an internationalist there's a big palestinian arab muslim population label it any way you want in paris of course there is. the outgoing soon to be outgoing german chancellor she's got
9:41 pm
herself in political hot water because people have turned away from her because she's opened the door to so many refugees those 2 people that drive the european union they are the engine of the european union they understand the plight of the little guy and they want to leave their fingerprints on a solution for the little guy but when it comes to israel slash palestine they're kind of looking the other way just now how come hamas. i think they have an issue with hamas i think they all of them consider how much to be a terrorist organizations and don't want to have anything to do with it and they feel burned by the entire islamist issue since that of spain but also since $911.00 and they tend to mix things up they don't understand and apparently they don't well estimate that hamas has never carried a single operation outside palestine but hamas is a national movement not some muslim movement. hamas has always always on trend
9:42 pm
within palestine only and of course it is a movement that is concerned only with it but esteem issues just like fatah be that the rugby and all these other factions and. but some of these governments have an issue but even if they do and this is an important point because in fronts the the sympathy with the palestinian question is almost the opposite of what it is in the united states and the united states is something like $73.00 to $18.00 or 20 percent in favor of israel in france the opposite so it's not just the arabs and muslim minority in france there is a big part of the population in france liberal left progressive and others who stand behind palestine and they have done that for a long time as someone who finished his studies in france i can tell you being part of the youth movement in prince that there's a great sympathy with that and it's based on liberal values not religious that lives in trance most of these things are based on liberal democratic values of sort of direct your truck they're not the old saw and so forth but the point here is due
9:43 pm
to the specific issue of precinct today is that the same thing happened in london so the british government again another very integral establishment there called the united kingdom along the demonstrations to go on and we covered it our reporter was there spoke to the people of the people demonstrating peacefully and that's what is the end of that story the british people whether they are most liberal christians left or right express themselves in the city of london why couldn't that have been a bad simple question why could it have been imposed why it's ok for it to happen in berlin and in london but that bears and i think it is that mccrone is being a bit inexperienced in a body to be arms because clearly france can can can can deal with. even more difficult contradictions france throughout its history dealt with all sorts of disturbances france is the creator of the 16th movements france has as well as gone through much and it could easily deal with the sentiments of

a number of its citizens who want to express to the doctor whether with israel. let them be one comes order with palestine but again i think people need to pay attention to this geopolitics of emotions that's eroding that it's gotten exploded on the world and they need to give it a voice not try to suppress it because once you start to suppress people from expressing that peacefully. on the streets of of of the various cities and perhaps those in the west and other place of the world what's happening is people resort thing to other means and you certainly don't want that in a country where you can express yourself peacefully definitely make sure people do so because in the end of it what is it that we're trying to do in palestine and the rest of the arab world with all the time just trying to establish democracy as likely have in france and the u.k. and but in other places in the islamist movements in the arab world do they understand that you need to stop this democratic systems so when you look at trance and you see them blocking

a simple demonstrations for justice and peace in the holy land as it were in palestine in israel palestine and you block it you're clearly doing something that's quite masochistic that's quite wrong that such inflicting harm on your side is as a country that boasts of the liberal and democratic values. thank you very much. ok let's focus on some other top stories for you here in the news people in chile have begun casting their votes in state and local elections they're electing an assembly of 155 members to write the country's new constitution and in a global 1st 50 percent of those elected must be female with 17 spaces reserved for indigenous peoples this comes off the back of mass protests ensure that started in 2019 and

a version of toba demanding an end to the current pinochet era constitution and more social justice now last in america at its alysia newman joins us live from santiago alysia on the face of it seems like a fantastic idea. well at the obviously not everybody in the country agreed with it but about 80 percent did there was a referendum a few months ago you may recall where to be and were asked whether they wanted or not to scrap the pinochet era constitution and over whelming majority said yes and so now we're seeing the exercise of actually electing for the very 1st time in this country who will write that constitution out of the population at large in the past they were politicians they had to be senators deputies people assigned by the president or others but now this is not the case of fact the vast majority of the candidates are independents because chileans only a very very small percentage of chileans belong to this country is now very

discredited political parties were in a working class neighborhood now and everybody here that we spoke to seize this election to elect the delegates to the constitutional assembly as the as historic as the most important thing that many say has happened to them in their lives some older people who are being able to vote today they're getting priority say that perhaps they will not be alive to see the results of the. this but they're hoping that that this is no magna carta will lay the groundwork that contract for a better economic political and social system of of rights for all in this country and so this is what we're hearing over and over again but another another part of the city there are others who are concerned that those who are elected may be too radical they want to go just too far and destroy this country's economic system which at least for some has been very successful peter for those people who are against the idea what do they see as being the big potential problems

a little further down the road they see that this that the new constitution could give. could that restrict the freedom of free enterprise of private property this of this country is very very powerful elite to be honest that is what they're concerned about because we're hearing a lot about that it's also the fact that it's being taken away or that it's hoped by many of the voters that the power will be taken away from the classical political parties and structure which they see as corrupt which means that it's that it's a guess as to who exactly will be those who will be writing the constitution whether they're prepared to do it or not whether they have the the ability rather to do to write a constitution that can last for decades if not longer to see a new man unless america does a reporting live for the news from santiago to see a thank you so much. saturday's the final day of registration for candidates hoping
