launched a new wave of air strikes on gaza only hours after one of its rockets hit a building housing foreign media outlets including al-jazeera israeli prime minister binyamin it's now less vowed to continue the offensive on gaza for cold as long as necessary while the head of hamas says the resistance will not give in harry fawcett reports from west on the day's events. from israeli army another gaza high rise became a condemned building minutes ticking down on a one hour warning. this the office of the associated press as it staff made instant decisions about what they needed to salvage to keep on working across the lift lobby staff from the al-jazeera bureau were doing the very same thing that's on the street outside the building's owner pleading for a stay of execution home at 7 we need 10 minutes as you can see there all around the press not people who are going in to get weapons out but there was no arguing

a visit to the qatari capital doha look this. guy. that has been besieged for 15 years 15 years under siege from every direction. from us military wing sent further major rocket attacks deep into israeli territory on saturday a 55 year old israeli man was killed when one rocket struck his home in a televised suburb in the midst of it all in the occupied west bank palestinian protesters confronted israeli soldiers or not but day when palestinians marked the creation of the state of israel what they call the catastrophe the palestinian red cross said scores were wounded many by live ammunition in occupied east jerusalem or scuffles around the neighborhood of shaikh shura where threatened forced expulsions have fuelled the tensions. with violence on so many fronts still untamed israel's prime minister said he spoke to the u.s.

president and informed him of israel's planned next steps are a force at al-jazeera west jerusalem let's get an update on the situation tonight and speak to. joins us live from gaza but i know it's been a very long and difficult day for you and the colleagues in gaza bring us up to speed with what's been happening in a last few hours and the mood in gaza tonight after the day we witnessed. well it was a long day on the looks like it would be also aluminite just minutes. minutes ago of the israeli fighting jets carved out intensive. bomb beings and tense of crisis on a car. on the center of the gaza city just few 100 meters from our destroyed office they hit the main roads they hit to his attention buildings this time without the new warning all the news we are receiving
2:07 am
from dr area which is called and what the city which is one of the most important roads in gaza city itself in the center of gaza properly so 2 buildings have been completely destroyed without warning residents to leave she found a hospital in gaza said that they had 3 brothers of. all right so far today the hospital more injured but this there's still believe there are more people missing under the rubble of the destroyed houses 2 houses. they are still. trying to pick up to pull the bodies from under the rubble minutes before the israeli attacks the fallacy in fighting groups. they have longer range. rocket attack into or tell of eve and other. big big israeli cities in the south of that island. before that we had like 2 hours of. calmness relatively
2:08 am
calm as off that of the car some brigades the military wing of hamas said that they would stop with the fire for a clean for 2 hours to give the output she need to for their people and to leave to move in these 2 hours then after that after this all of that is. so far. you know. people are. picked it could be after a long day that the night at least could be called not a bug as we saw and we hear these explosions shake gaza city and even in some of our other places like in the central area of the gaza strip and even in the north over there got a sort of still the israeli. forces are carrying out. attacks in different places including. empty fields including the residential areas including

. points belong to fighting groups so the israeli latest attacks are the latest wave of. attacks let's say taking different kind of targets are you attacking different kinds of targets. it's variable from time started in the afternoon when our building. is a residential areas the roads empty fields and so on and we hear the bombing in the background i thank you for that update. correspondent. now israeli forces have killed at least one palestinian protester and injured 365 others during a knock by a day protest in the occupied west bank ronnie's were held in hebron ramallah. they gathered to mark the 73rd anniversary of the day the arab israeli war broke out one day after israel declared independence hundreds of palestinians were
2:10 am
forcibly hundreds of thousands of palestinians were forcibly expelled from their homes to make way for the establishment of the state of israel in a brain was one of the protests seen in the occupied west bank where palestinians confronted israeli forces. these palestinians most of them were born after the $99.00 after. the palestinian. and they were promised on and on by their leaders that they're going to be having freedom and a state instead of all these people are seeing now is if you can hear these tear gas bombs that are being fired by the israeli army we've even seen the israeli army is fire live ammunition we have 3 palestinians were now in a critical condition more than 50 palestinians were injured according to medical sources and the majority of these people were hit by live ammunition these people
2:11 am
here would tell you that they are fed up of talks of having a state talks of having peace while instead what they see and on the ground is intensifying illegal israeli settlement building intensifying is really power and is released which often when the israelis say that they are investigating the allegations or these attacks 90 more than 90 part of 5 percent of these attacks go on indicted so there is a sense here that this really is are building in the west bank having the upper hand and these people here are trying to. fight that and the only way as many of them were telling us they don't have arms don't have anything and one palestinian put us there was even showing us how he was making it all us all booked it by adding petrol and a piece of cloth drifting through and then they would fire it and try and send it towards the israeli soldiers it's kind of like small means they don't have much but
2:12 am
they were telling us that if this is what we have to liberate palestine so this is what we are going to do. israel's one bomber into gaza has sparked a global outcry against their actions solidarity rallies have been held across the world as tens of thousands of people gathered to show support for the palestinian people. in iraq demonstrators held a rally in the capital's tyrion square many were shouting untie israel slogans while some were seen burning israeli friends mass public gatherings have been rare in iraq since the government imposed curfews to curb the spread of coronavirus they were similar scenes in the u.k. as people took to the streets in london lines of people waving banners and palestinian flags stretch straw the british capital as they called on the government to take immediate action to help end the fighting and solidarity protests were also held in several cities across the u.s.
2:13 am
including the capital washington d.c. they accuse the government of funding what they call israeli war and torture in palestine as bring in john hendren in washington for us john you were at one of the rallies in d.c. earlier tell us about the crowds how big they were and what was the message. this really was an unusually large global show of support for the palestinian cause here in the u.s. there were demonstrations in new york chicago colorado and here in washington d.c. we saw an unusually large pro palestinian crowd of several founders and people and they really had 2 things to say one they wanted peace. in the israeli palestinian conflict right now but also they want the u.s. government to exert more pressure on israel to end this conflict and there is a real sense of dissatisfaction that the biden administration's policies are really
2:14 am
not significantly different than the policies of the trumpet ministration or any other u.s. administration over the past several years but there does seem to be increasing support for the palestinian cause here in the us streets and bats one we're seeing fauzi people gather in several cities here and of course around the globe and president biden john held phone conversations with the israeli prime minister as well as upon it's now what he president what more do we know came out of those conversations. that's right this was apparently the 1st time the president spoke to mahmoud abbas since the conflict began the 2nd time that he spoke to benjamin netanyahu entered both of them he expressed concern about the loss of life and what he called intercommunal violence that is violence between individuals in those 2 groups to abbas he said ultimately the solution to this is
2:15 am
a 2 state solution that has been for a long time u.s. policy to netanyahu he reiterated that the u.s. position is that israel has a right to self-defense and to both men he condemned the firing of rockets by hamas out of gaza so really not as substantially changed u.s. policy and not a real sense of urgency pressuring either side particularly netanyahu to end this conflict john thank you for that john hendren live for us sane washington. and still ahead on al-jazeera dozens more bodies of suspected called $900.00 victims were found floating in india's river ganges and touched down china makes history as they successfully manned spacecraft on mars.
2:16 am
surprisingly it's now remarkably warm of a most the u.s. including the northern states and canada they have eventually i think been brought up from the south of course that generates big showers of months ago in texas oklahoma arkansas and up to missouri your light season for the big showers they could get worse i think after the weekend to have just the dogs 26 in minneapolis 25 when you pick and toronto's a 22 this must be a relief to those be really feeling so cold recently that breeze down the coast of california keeps san francisco a date. in this of course a lot of marine layer try the guy who has it all way down to baja california but it might generate a few showers in the land which will help with the current high fire risk at least in some california here's the shower progress and their biggest i think probably in texas with a doozy spread fairly east was orange tops always seem a little bit on the dodgy sard dallas' to far as we're going to find in texas
2:17 am
thunderstorms for monday tuesday and wednesday. but we shall also on the storms in cuba jamaica bahamas possibly baja california as well very few south of that only light showers i think on the eastern side of the caribbean and his kingston jamaica a couple days of quite significant thunderstorms. but. it's a very bleak picture for a lot of americans out there white supremacy impacts all of our life issues you're putting more money into the hands of someone 1st taking money out of the hands of other workers their own goes to their camp he becomes a us versus them this is the deal about constraining a nuclear program the bottom line of the big questions on out is there. if you want to help save the world. sneeze and euro.
2:18 am
to. to. your watching al-jazeera live from doha a reminder of our top stories israel has continued its bombardment of gaza as its offensive enters its 7th day at least 145 palestinians including 41 children have been killed since monday and nearly a 1000 others are injured it has fired more rockets towards israel most were intercepted by the iron dome defense system at least 10 people have been injured in israel from the latest attacks 10 others have died in israel since the conflict escalated early on friday israel destroyed an 11 story building housing international media including algis year and the associated press both companies
2:19 am
have condemned the attack and about to continue reporting from gaza. more on this story on al-jazeera and specifically focusing on the u.s. response to the israel palestine conflict joining me now is phyllis bennis she's a fellow at the institute for policy studies and author of the recent book understanding the palestinian israeli conflict phyllis is joining us via skype from washington very good to have you with us on al-jazeera i want to talk to you about the u.s. response to the conflict as we heard from our correspondent in washington earlier president biden's message is what we've heard from american presidents of both parties whether republican or democrats for decades but this conflict it seems is being viewed differently in the u.s. this time around what do you think has changed. i think what has not changed as you say is the position so far the by the ministration what we know about the conversation between president biden and the israeli prime minister and mahmoud
2:20 am
abbas is that he has not called for a cease fire he has not put any pressure on israel to stop the slaughter that's underway in gaza and this is a very familiar situation in which it appears that the u.s. is taking the lead from israel on when they are ready for a cease fire and netanyahu has made clear he is not ready for a cease fire he said that our aim is to send him us a message that it's not worth sending these rockets he is still sending that message and this is very reminiscent of earlier situations in 2006 with the the israeli war on lebanon congolese arise then the secretary of state to to george bush said we aren't we don't want a ceasefire yet implying presumably there were not enough dead people yet rice is something similar here it's quite dangerous what would constitute a red line do you think for the biden administration as he said his largely sat to
2:21 am
the old regional script everyone thought that he would would do better then then trump on the stormy issue with the years of experience he's had why this gnocchi approach why is the u.s. so unwilling to apply the same standards of justice to israel as if the pride everywhere else in the world. there's a long answer in the short answer the long answer has to do with the so-called special relationship that is both a political and a strategic relationship with israel that has led to a situation where it has long been assumed to be political suicide for any politician including a president to seriously challenge israeli aggression it is not political suicide but unfortunately too many people in washington have not recognized that shift in reality on the immediate level president biden came in saying very clearly foreign policy is not my priority my priority is the pen demick and the economy and to the
2:22 am
degree that i'm going to do with how with with foreign policy it all it's china and iran and not israel palestine now he has israel palestine policy which is exactly what president trump left him meaning these extremist positions moving the embassy to jerusalem recognizing settlements as somehow legal calling for an extension of territory these are not biden's own positions right until he changes that he is stuck with those as his policy right so right now the question is is his armed were in the region heidi am or is he prepared to actually tell the israelis that there will be serious consequences not just stirring words not just words of concern but real consequences in terms of no longer supporting is really violations by providing funding no longer protecting israel from being held accountable in the international criminal court etc until that happens there's no reason to think the
2:23 am
israelis are going to pay attention you talked about biden focusing more on domestic policy rather than foreign policy but there are those who would say that the issue of it of israel is almost a domestic policy in the united states right now we're hearing more more and more volatile as within the democratic party progressive democrats especially challenging the party establishment could these voices within the democratic party get even more louder and be more transformative to the point that we could perhaps . i think that we will see and i hope that it happens sooner rather than later the shift is on 2 levels we're seeing now for the 1st time in congress members of congress who are prepared to stand up and defend palestinian rights helis dinny and children there on thursday night there was an hour long session special session of congress where 20 members of congress got up to make direct speeches in support of . holding israel accountable and palestinian rights in in various forms that it
2:24 am
never happened before we also are seeing a massive shift among democratic party voters where support for israel is now a partisan issue in a way that it never was before the support for israel is overwhelmingly a republican position among voters you don't see this distinction among members of congress but you do see it among the voters and when members of congress start to realize this that support for the in the last poll just a few months ago support for the israeli government favorable views towards the israeli government were in the mid to high sixty's for republicans but in the mid twenty's for democratic voters that's a huge shift it's a huge divide a partisan divide and that means there is room for the incredible movement for palestinian rights that has been working for 20 years plus in this country and has had real success at changing the political discourse the public discourse the shift
2:25 am
among african-americans shifting towards the court for palestinian rights the shift within the jewish community has been extraordinary in recent years and all of that is absolutely going to have a significant shift it's going to lead to a significant effect in voting patterns in congress the question is how long will it take to get to that point where it's not just the public discourse it's not just the media discourse that's also changing but it's also a policy discourse that changes that's the next step and that's what we have to move to thank you very much for talking to us about this for hispanics starting us there from washington thank you for your time. thank you. let's turn our attention to other world news now and india's government says corona virus infections and death stabilizing after the country reported its smallest daily rise in new cases in nearly 3 weeks but it says the virus has rapidly spreading through rural areas and experts say most deaths there are not being reported officials say the bodies
2:26 am
of iran 2000 suspected over 1000 victims have been recovered from the river ganges the river flows through some of the poorest states where many families can't afford cremations on saturday india reported around 3900 deaths in just over 326000 infections. people in chile have begun casting their vote in state and local elections they're electing an assembly of 155 members to write the country's new constitution and in a global 1st 50 percent of those elected must be female with 17 spaces reserves for indigenous people this comes off the back of mass protests that began in 2019 and a vote in october demanding an end to the current constitution and more social justice a lot america has a lucy and human has more from santiago. there was a referendum a few months ago you may recall where chileans were asked whether they wanted or not to scrap the pinochet era constitution and an over whelming majority said yes
2:27 am
and so now we are seeing the exercise of actually electing for the very 1st time in this country who will write that constitution out of the population at large in the past they were politicians they had to be senators deputies people assigned by the president or others but now this is not the case in fact the vast majority of the candidates are independents because chileans only a very very small percentage of chileans belong to this country's now very discredited political parties weirdo in a working class neighborhood now and everybody here that we spoke to seize this election to elect the delegates to the constitutional assembly as the as historic is the most important thing that many say has happened to them in their lives some older people who are being able to vote today they're getting priority say that perhaps they will not be alive to see the results of this but that they're hoping that that this new magna carta will lay the groundwork the contract for
2:28 am
a better economic political and social system of of rights for all in this country and so this is what we're hearing over and over again but in another part of the city there are others who are concerned that those who are elected may be too radical they want to go just too far and destroy this country's economic system which at least for some has been very successful. china has successfully landed a spacecraft on mars it's now the fed country to have a rover touchdown on the red planet after the u.s. and russia alexey o'brien reports. an explosion of relief and celebration after what scientists describe as 7 minutes of terror. watching the spacecraft land on mars. thank you for the mission is a success. china's venture to the red planet has its most ambitious space mission
2:29 am
yet before now it's only gone as far as the moon. and it should be said that this was not an easy task it is our 1st time down this path and we have met many difficulties it was through a lot of hard work that today we were able to go through with our plans to make the reality that young when one orbiter sit out in july last year and reached mars and 7 months it's been circling the red planet since february the 6 wheeled rover inside long is named after the god of fire in ancient chinese mythology the plan is to undergo a few days of tests before it explores an icy area known as utopia plan a shia joining an american rover that landed in february it's going to look at the geology of the area look for evidence of past water current water still in the interior really on business program a science particularly works at the 1st summit that meets market kind of drugs.
2:30 am
that's our kind of. china is now the 3rd country to make a touchdown on mass after russia in 1981 and the u.s. 5 years later nesses rovers have already sent back pictures of their environment the sound of the martian wind while a tiny helicopter ingenuity made a pioneering flight there last month several other craft all of it in the planet including one from the united arab emirates part of a global space race that's recently accelerated with several countries jostling for the top spot. china's if it's haven't been without criticism last week it caused concern worldwide when daybreak from one of its rockets fell to earth and controlled the u.s. space agency nasa accused beijing of being irresponsible for china said there was only an extremely low risk of damage.
