this release which often when the israelis say that they are investigating these allegations or these attacks 90 more than 90 part of 5 percent of these attacks go on indicted so there is a sense here that this really is are building in the occupied west bank having the upper hand and these people who are trying to fight that and the only way as many of them were telling us they don't arms don't have anything and one palestinian protester was even showing us how he was making a joke to buy adding petrol and a piece of cloth dripping glue and then they would fire that and try and. towards the israeli soldiers it's kind of like small means they don't have much but they were telling us that if this is what we have to bring palestine to this is what we are going to do. is. cry against our actions. have

been held across the world as tens of thousands of people gather. to show support for the palestinian people. in iraq demonstrators held a rally in the capital's tyree are square many were shouting untie israel slogans while somewhere it seemed burning israeli fags family gatherings have been raining iraq since the government imposed curfews to curb the spread of coronavirus there were similar scenes in the u.k.'s thousands of people took to the streets in london lines of people waving banners and palestinian flags threats toward the british capital as they called on their government to take immediate action to help end the fighting and solidarity protests were also held in several cities across the u.s. including the capital washington d.c. they accuse a us government to funding what they call israeli war and torture in palestine john hendren has more from washington this really was an unusually large global show of
3:13 am
support for the palestinian cause here in the u.s. there were demonstrations in new york chicago colorado and here in washington d.c. we saw an unusually large pro palestinian crowd of several found people and they really had 2 things to say one they wanted peace in between in the israeli palestinian conflict right now but also they want the u.s. government to exert more pressure on israel to end this conflict and there is a real sense of dissatisfaction at the biden administration's policies are really not significantly different than the policies of the trumpet ministration or any other u.s. administration over the past several years this was apparently the 1st time the president spoke to mahmoud abbas since the conflict began 2 2nd time that he spoke to benjamin netanyahu into both of them he expressed concern about the loss of life
3:14 am
and what he called intercommunal violence that is violence between individuals. in those 2 groups to abbas he said ultimately the solution to this is a 2 state solution that has been for a long time u.s. policy to netanyahu he reiterated that the u.s. position is that israel has a right to self-defense and to both men he condemned the firing of rockets by hamas out of gaza. and now that wild news ahead on al-jazeera as the bodies of 2000 suspected over 1800 every convert from the river ganges we know that how india is coping with a pandemic. until recently the baltic sea just tweeted where a joy and oxygen free dead zone is one of the latest symptoms of climate change.

her. current form. to. welcome back every captive amin story this hour on al-jazeera israel has continued its bombardment of gaza with more than $150.00 airstrikes in the last hour at least $154.00 palestinians including $41.00 children have been killed since monday and nearly a 1000 others are injured commodified more rockets towards israel most were intercepted by the iron dome defense system at least 10 people have been injured from the latest attacks 10 of those have died in israel since the conflict escalates it early on friday israel destroyed an 11 story building housing international media including algis year and the associated press both companies have condemned the
3:18 am
attack and vowed to continue reporting from gaza more now on this story and focusing on the u.s. response to the conflict let's speak to hillary mann leverett who is a former white house national security official and is currently the c.e.o. of the political risk consultancy she joins us via skype from virginia in the u.s. very good to have you on our air miss leverett once again thank you. from what we know about the conversation with prime minister netanyahu and president abbas u.s. president biden has largely stuck to the old regional scripts concern and so on everyone thought that biden would do better than trump on this tourny issue why this low key approach by the current administration. well people thought that biden would do better than trump because he had been president obama as vice president and president obama tried to have
3:19 am
a somewhat different policy then than us administrations in the past which it really mired the united states in this never ending cook quote unquote peace process that never brought peace to anybody in in the middle east so people thought that biden would be better because he had worked for obama but biden is really very much representative of this kind of old school establishment politics in the united states which. really predates president obama and represented much more of a very solidly pro israel line both in congress and in the administration and biden has really is really determined i think to keep that middle of the road establishment democratic policy and not just not to stir too many of his democratic party donors and not disturb the dynamics in the u.s. congress but the discourse seems to be changing in the democratic
3:20 am
party were hearing more diverse voices now especially a man among progressive democrats there's increasing support also among the american public for the palestinian cause surely the administration has been listening to this why why not for instance condition aid to israel. you're absolutely right to point out this growing disconnect this growing gap between the old school the establishment politics of the democratic party which president biden absolutely represents and there's a growing progressive voice within the actual democratic population here in the united states which is represented increasingly in congress we had some very important turnovers in congress in the past 4 to 5 years where we had stalwart pro israel people who had been in for decades were but were ousted by progressives who came into office who are much more open to looking at palestinian rights as human rights as basic human rights that caucus is growing in the congress that feeling
3:21 am
and that view is growing amongst american public focus on a black lives matter how could black lives matter and palestinian lives don't matter it makes no sense but this is a growing disconnect and biden is determined to try to wait it out so that he can continue to get his primary focus of domestic legislation through the congress and really try to keep his eye on china and russia and away from the middle east how how long do you anticipate he will wait it out i mean are they any red lines for israel anymore how many deaths will be enough. it really seems like there's almost never a red line and i am really pessimistic that there really would ever be a change especially under someone like president biden who represents this old school the one to change which potentially could shift things a bit is is really what they're calling intercommunal violence is. the concern
3:22 am
about arab citizens of israel are constantly and citizens of israel who are being targeted attacked and beaten in the streets on full view for everyone to see that could change things because it becomes almost ridiculous that president biden is dealing only with with mahmoud abbas who does not mind abbas represent here he doesn't represent anybody in gaza and he certainly doesn't represent any of the palestinian citizens of israel so it looks almost ridiculous combined and really ride it out as long as he would like i think we'll see that's what he seems to intend to do whether that will work in terms of the course of the conflict i think is a real question but i'm very pessimistic thank you so much for sharing your views with us hillary mann leverett showing us there from washington thank you. let's turn our attention to other world news now and india's government says corona virus infections and deaths are stab allies in out of the country report it is smallest

daily rise in new cases in nearly 3 weeks but it says the virus is rapidly spreading through rural areas then experts say most tests there are not being reported officials say the bodies of iran 2000 suspected over 9000 victims have been recovered from the river ganges the river flows through some of the poorest states where many families can't afford cremations on saturday india report iran 3900 deaths in just over 326000 infections from new delhi padmini tom has more. the tragedy we're seeing on the ground simply cannot be quantified i mean if i could just run you through the latest numbers nationally the fresh count is the lowest we've seen in over a fortnight but still above the 300000 mark even the death toll is the lowest in 4 days but still where above the 3000 mark and involvement in jail you know that's what we've been talking about a lot the tragedy over there and now the government has acknowledged that it has
3:24 am
recovered more than 2000 bodies in and around the ganges and this is happening in 2 of in just poorest states this emption is that these are bodies of people who died of colvin and because of the rising cost of cremation and the general feel of the virus this is how people are getting rid of dead bodies this really underscores 2 things that we've been talking about one the massive undercount both in terms of the death toll and also the caseload and secondly in rural india you know the combination of poverty a threadbare medical infrastructure and lack of literacy lack of know how this is these are places where you can catch a covert test more you're positive and isolate these are not places where you have you know high quality and 95 mosques you know good facilities to sanitize and the combination of all of this has really allowed the virus to run rampant in rural

a referendum a few months ago you may recall where chileans were asked whether they wanted or not to scrap the pinochet era constitution and an over whelming majority said yes and so now we are seeing the exercise of actually electing for the very 1st time in this country who will write that constitution out of the population at large in the past they were politicians they had to be senators deputies people assigned by the president or others but now this is not the case in fact the vast majority of the candidates are independents because chileans only a very very small percentage of chileans belong to this country's now very discredited political parties weirdo in a working class neighborhood now and everybody here that we spoke to seize this election to elect the delegates to the constitutional assembly as the as historic is the most important thing that many say has happened to them in their lives some older people who are being able to vote today they're getting priority say that
3:27 am
perhaps they will not be alive to see the results of this but that they're hoping that that this new magna carta will lay the groundwork the contract for a better economic political and social system of of rights for all in this country and so this is what we're hearing over and over again but in another part of the city there are others who are concerned that those who are elected may be too radical they want to go just too far and destroy this country's economic system which at least for some has been very successful. the oceans have been a powerful ally in combating global warming absolving nearly 93 percent of the compound dioxide released by human activity since 1970 but the rise in temperatures and discharge of pollutants has created a series of dead zones oxygen depleted areas each measuring tens of thousands of square kilometers where no plant or animal life can survive poll recently forced from sweden on the baltic sea west scientists have measured the narges dead zone in
3:28 am
the wild. sweden's ability baltic coast a chilly spring has held back the tide of domestic tourists expected to hit these beaches due to foreign travel restrictions but it's not such a pretty picture under the water rising global temperatures on the impact of fertilizer and sewage have caused huge areas with no over very little oxygen known as dead zones the baltic sea is the largest human in the dead zone in the world it is somewhere around $70000.00 square kilometers and it can increase global warming rapid rate the baltic zone may be the biggest but the problem is worldwide increasing by millions of square kilometers in the past half century the so-called dead zones are either in small pockets a little bit coast where they lose or gain oxygen according to the seasons or that far out to sea where they can be pretty much permanent cover. they get
3:29 am
worse the. seas like the baltic have been a buffer against climate change absorbing excess heat and carbon dioxide. but tests have shown that is surface water heats up oxygen from the atmosphere can no longer get through creating the dead layer beneath so sea floors that should be full of vegetation and life are empty. it's one of the reasons cited in cases where thousands of dead fish have been washed up on beaches. solutions have been tested in the baltic such as a wave powered device to pump oxygen down below. a more low tech solution is here in a unesco wetland near the city of christian start. for this wetland means we hold water on land for longer before it reaches the sea so the vegetation
3:30 am
can absorb fertilizer and pollutants and prevent algae blooms in the baltic so it's one part of the puzzle in preventing dead zones. some hope emerged last month in the indian ocean where ecologists found a sea grass meadow the size of switzerland a vital site of carbon capture and supporting thousands of marine species but with evidence that areas like this are receding it may not be enough to mitigate the ever increasing loss of oxygen from the world's oceans a number that stands at 77000000000 tonnes of o 2 in just 70 years paul reese al-jazeera on the baltic coast of sweden. where again i'm fully back with the headlines on israel has continued its bombardment of gaza with more than 150 s. strikes in the past hour.
