from a launcher they tried to disperse it almost immediately in very large concentrated numbers so that protest that demonstration that march was dispersed very quickly and since then it has been this kind of thing in a greater or lesser number of people throwing stones using slingshots to use to project marbles in his direction as well getting as close as they can try to just act in a defiant manner half the time make gestures use body language to show that they are afraid of the israeli soldiers that is the message that they're trying to convey there are 2 roads that converge on this point we're looking down the main one there's also another one almost in peril of the slight angle to it and there as well we've seen people approaching this position again doing the same thing throwing rocks at every. few minutes once this is been happening for maybe 5 or 10 minutes and they've been getting closer and closer and closer in trying to show
6:01 pm
greater and greater defiance of the situation here at that point is when there is a command obviously given and one of a few things have been happening at one point it was a rush by soldiers to to get rid of them followed up by tear gas later it was another rush and an arrest and they took somebody down to the ground we had a car doing donuts at the end of the street. took someone down and arrested him took him away and that was followed by another big volley from those tear gas vehicles and mechanically laced skunk water vehicle again there was a lull and then again people came back there was another round of similar. what is that some kind of someone is the letting go of some sort of tear gas i think substance out of the canister there. there is there's another low and then again you've been watching it on air with us. someone throwing
6:02 pm
a fire extinguisher i think into the into the road you've been watching it with us there was another phase where those protesters got closer and closer as they threw stones made obvious gestures towards the israeli position here and just minutes ago 3 apparent sniper fire shots into the crowd one injury at least we can confirm there were a few maybe a minute apart from each other maybe slightly more and that has seen most of those people now disappear into the side streets and further away although as you see one person at least down one of the alleyways is just thrown a fire extinguisher on the ground quite close to where that sniper fire injured that man. ok if you're just joining us it's worth just getting a quick time check in recapping the situation and what you are seeing on your
6:03 pm
screens that is our correspondent harry force of talking to us from bethlehem in occupied west bank we're looking at live pictures from there you can see smoke billowing out we're also looking at the split screen next to it the city of nablus also in the west bank and just to remind you of why we are focusing on these images this was the day tuesday that palestinian officials had called for a general strike in the occupied territories and this is essentially how it turned out thousands of people took to the streets and. essentially went from a general strike into scenes of violence we've seen stones being thrown tear gas being used water tires been burnt number of people injured in various parts of the occupied territories so let's return now to our correspondent harry forsett
6:04 pm
who it is in in bethlehem the picture we're looking at her now looks relatively clear. earlier you were talking to our correspondent you were talking to. the presenter earlier and saying that this particular street is. is often the scene. it's a bit of a focal point isn't it for tensions but now we see it's relatively quiet it's been cleared clearly the israeli. military have managed to get all the protesters out ready. yes. becoming berkeley ready. we've just heard that 12 people now have been injured by life in bethlehem that's
6:05 pm
the latest figure we have. they they have cleared it but they've used they've used real bullets to do so that that was a live fire that we heard live on in just a few minutes ago and we saw one man injured taken away in an ambulance so there is a sense that this could easily repeat these phases of the phases of this kind of thing through the day and so the danger involved. for the palestinian protesters in doing so is now very clear in this specific part of the road we know that in this protest and generally we can't see all of it of course there are various ways off to the right and left really there have been 12 injured by live fire so it's a very serious situation it is what i have to say we were expecting there was a grim expectation that we were going to have a violent day in the occupied west bank we've seen life exchanged.
6:06 pm
in the northern part of the occupied west bank close to ramallah there was fire coming from the israelis and those fire coming from someone on the palestinian side injuring 2 israelis there here we haven't seen any that we haven't seen any firearms or lethal weapons used so far at least in this part of the protests that we've been witnessing on the palestinian side we have to see the overwhelming force used by the israeli army as it has been moving on them trying to clear them then retreating they've been coming back getting closer and closer and closer and then once again one of several tactics is used by the israeli military the most recent one firing on these protesters with live ammunition. and again. so i believe that was i mean not a lot of other men were in the cellars and in minutes and as far as you understand these. coming from the israeli military.
6:07 pm
i cannot confirm that is that coming from incoming or outgoing. we're pretty convinced it's coming from the israeli side i mean we've seen 33 almost definite that we used to clear the injuries we just heard those 2 other shots. and we know there are 12 people to be injured on the palestinian side by live i mean during the course of this protest we've seen with our own eyes israeli sniper teams taking up position shortly after protesters were moved away from this immediate area around the base and i can i can't give you 100 percent certainty that every single shot i'm hearing is being fired burnt israeli soldier but i think we can be pretty much 90 percent certain that's the case ok let's leave it for now. for us in bethlehem in occupied west bank of course this is a very fast moving situation as soon as this any more developments we will return
6:08 pm
back to howry we can speak to our correspondent abraham who is in ramallah in the occupied west bank. it's been a very tumultuous situation where you are as well just recap for us what's been happening there over the past sort of hour or so. so we've at 1st seen palestinian protesters coming here which is near the legal israeli settlement. where there is a military an israeli military checkpoint callous to me and we're throwing rocks at the israeli army but then an hour or 2 hours after that we've heard gunshots coming from this side for the palestinian side and we believe they're from palestinian militants towards this side and then the israeli military has responded with live ammunition just to note the been ringback hearing live ammunition shots
6:09 pm
being fired from the israeli army since the beginning of the truth just we believe that we have one person who was just wounded now so the confrontations continued after that. ask elation let's call it or exchange of fire and we've been here. more and more. rounds sometimes the rubber coated steel bullets sometimes their live ammunition by the israeli army towards the protesters and then it is definitely calmer than it was 2 hours ago but every once in a while we hear our shot and then we hear an ambulance taking a palestinian to the hospital according to the red crescent they say that 26 palestinians were shot by live ammunition just here near the illegal settlement of and we've also been seeing the israeli army bringing
6:10 pm
a bulldozer that has been putting up barricades so it seems like the israeli army wasn't ready for a shooting scene are you it is definitely an unusual scenario here it's unusual and seen. there is not so much. arms in the occupied west bank and if there are usually the israeli army comes in and arrests of those palestinians so we can tell that it wasn't the scenario that the israeli army has been predicting usually in the past few days we've been seeing protesters threw rocks sometimes molotov cocktails that they prepare on the scene and also they've been using fireworks to try to steer away in israeli drone that usually fires tear gas at them but never the less even when these protesters were only using rocks and molotov cocktails with been seeing israeli army used live ammunition today we can report
6:11 pm
that 2 palestinians were killed one of them here he was shot to confrontations behind this now near the legal israeli settlement of another palestinian was killed in have drawn and the israeli army said that he was conducting or attempting an attack against them so that raises the number of palestinians were killed since the beginning. a scale ation on monday to 23. ok need to finance our we'll leave it there need to bring him there for us near ramallah she's standing on a hill looking down on the protests at the people gathering below we are seeing that source in the live pictures let's turn to another part of the country we can talk to hold abdel-hamid she is at mount of olives in occupied east jerusalem firstly tell us exactly why you are where you are and what the situation is there. yes well where i am was actually we were trying to get from damascus to going
6:12 pm
around really ok but these jurors are going to check what was happening the general strike that has been holed up on is by and large respected all the shops are shut down the streets of empty the restaurants are closed but you do really feel as you drive around the tension. and the anger among palestinians earlier we were at that mask gate that's basically the entrance to the whole city was a place that would be bustling at any time of the day when it was completely empty at a certain point a group of protesters and young activists has showed up they were actually peacefully singing slogans the israeli police warned them to leave that area and then very quickly not even one could argue not even leaving them the time to leave the police moved in started firing stun grenades rubber coated
6:13 pm
bullets at a certain point we also saw the shot with the skunk water so disperse saying all of the protesters who were in that area now they are they headed to the neighborhood of ships or rather that's the neighborhood many would tell you here is that it's a rather really that sparked. galvanized the anger the as been simmering among so many palestinians that's when. several families there were threatened of eviction now the latest reports we're hearing from there is that there are. clashes going on confrontations going on between the israeli police and some of the protesters there we hear that they have been at least 10 people wounded is really just charges or just have to see how. it will unfold but what we have seen as a faction is that the police moves in very quickly unleashes all it can to disperse
6:14 pm
these protesters as quick as possible in the meantime some of them get some of them get harshly beaten and we have witnessed that at the masters earlier and some of the detail but this is really just a slim expression of the anger that is among most palestinians the anger of what's happening here in jerusalem there is a feeling that really. israeli government is making all its effort to push out all palestinians from this city and obviously anger at what's happening in gaza you never underestimate the power of social media the amount of images do you see innocent civilians living in fear and panic wounded dead and all of that is just the translating now under streets ok many thanks. to me speaking to
6:15 pm
us there no doubt we will speak to you again let's get a little bit of analysis now we can speak to barak he's a contributing correspondent at x. yes he joins us live by skype from tel aviv many thanks for speaking to us barak be interesting interested to hear your thoughts about what you think israel or israeli authorities make of what is going on today in particular all these people coming out thousands of them in support of the palestinians many israeli arabs coming out in support of what is going on in palestine it's unprecedented to see so many people gather like this what do you think the israelis will be making of this.
6:16 pm
unfortunately it seems we don't have a proper connection to barack we will try and speak to him again. apparently we do you have him can you hear me yes i'm sorry i'm so we'll start all start over so. this crisis you know gaza is main focus now but it started with jerusalem it spilled over to gaza and hamas decided to fire the rockets and then it spilled over to israel itself within the 1967 lines and with this intercommunal violence between jews and arabs which is the worse intercommunal violence israel has scenes since the beginning of the 2nd intifada in october 2000 back at the time.
6:17 pm
arabs themselves will be. killed by the police any create and brief between jews and arabs in the country took us 20 years to try and repair this rift and what's been going on for the last 2 weeks i think created this rift again and the general strike you see in. india a minority in israel today it's obviously also about. jerusalem and. all of that but more than every what you see now in the our minority in israel is about this situation between jews and arabs and so the country and racism and inequality this is i think what is bringing many many people to demonstrate. let's talk about. the politics here and what is being done
6:18 pm
on the outside to try and bring an end to this conflict to bring some sort of cease fire we have from president biden yesterday for the 1st time expressing support for a cease fire between israel and hamas in a call he made with nessun yahoo. it is probably the furtherest he has gone so far . to to to make his feelings known in that way how much pressure is that going to put on israel to bring about a cease fire but i think. there was a tipping point on saturday when israel bombed the building in gaza to house the offices of just 0 and. this together with the airstrike that killed 2 women and 8 children several hours before and this created this tipping point that from that point on i think the white house started. making clear to
6:19 pm
israel that it's not going to have all the time it wants to continue this operation and i think that yesterday in the call that by whom if and you know this was the exact this message was we support your right for so defense down the rockets by hamas from gaza but we cannot continue fending off international pressures and domesticity pressures within the democratic party in the us forever so you should wrap it up i think this was the main message you should wrap it up there was no line but it was a clear message dance is running out. the fact is it's still not been wrapped up the bombing continues on both sides. how much support does nessun yahoo have within the country itself within israel from the israelis. well i think you have to divide it into too. many israelis in this round of
6:20 pm
violence. got into the range of hamas is missing. in previous conflicts named mainly the 2014 war there were 2 or 3 rockets fired tel aviv in the central israel in this conflict around 250 missiles were fired at tel aviv and center in israel so i think that many many israelis millions of years where they didn't bring this round of violence were biased or you know just watching from a distance of what's going on now you are so when it comes to the need to restore calm and stop the firing of rockets i think there's more or less a unity among israelis but this doesn't mean necessarily that this translates into political support over time you know by. the majority of
6:21 pm
israelis because you have to remember the netanyahu went on 4 consecutive election campaigns and he couldn't master a majority in any of them and this basic fact did not change so this is where he is now all of them want the rockets. does not mean that netanyahu has more. very interesting to get your thoughts about contributing correspondent at x. you're speaking to us from tel aviv thank you very much. we can cross live to our correspondent imran khan who's in southern israel shortly but let's 1st get the picture in gaza we can speak to some of our correspondent there so the bombing has continued today into gaza we have had a lot of focus at least today in our coverage on those protests going on elsewhere but what is the latest situation in gaza. yes the latest
6:22 pm
situation. since there were the morning t.v. now it is separated into this or bombing that is bombing has been hit with can on on the eastern side and then on the insides of gaza from the israeli camp on why we are here we didn't receive news about people were killed and there is also some agreements shot from gaza and we cannot justify as long as we are here but we are now in the end of the day which means that. that that night is coming which means that fear is coming and people are preparing themselves for another horrible night because at night the airstrikes become very intensive very strong and then hollywood according to their description to that description with the people i know it till now we hear some explosions and the drones do not leave the sky of gaza
6:23 pm
another point that when we come to to the head to the health sector. there are 2 main points about this vis issue number one that is when 0 with city is 103 a different set of is for helping people regarding 19 meant i mean on line treatment on fall 2 treatment or something like emergency it is stopped according to dr ashraf a little kid that the spokesperson of minister of health it is a stop number 2 they did mr actions of movements of ambulances according to their 103 stop because of the bombing a building get close to the ministry of health in gaza. and distinctions on the movement of ambulances because of destruction of the mandrel leads to hospitals
6:24 pm
either in north of gaza then denice jenin hospital or in gaza city itself al shifa hospital here he mentioned that in such situation it is very expected that there could be $1000.00 would be spread more on unborn why because this bombing caused the total stock of the work at that main elaborate you know full force of there could be 1000 tests in gaza here and in the 2nd and 3rd floors out of there that may lead at 20 and now it is to stop completely paralyzed and he and the russian told they'll just hearing that their ministry are now discussing the officials at the ministry are now discussing a way of where to work how to move what to do with those people especially among these time which. one thing is spreading more and more because of the military escalation which forced thousands of families to escape from their houses at the
6:25 pm
border that ally and to escape to take under water schools and as shelters each school at least 1000 people according to under were set to 6. approximately 1000 people there a crowd in their classrooms. nor mosques and. no protective arrangements. another point here when we come to the thing which has been bombed by that is that even plans you see. this building hosts a very human organizations may mean like that. red crescent and some local and g o's which artists supported by u.s. aid and any other organisation and also there are a clinic and then and also there is a media office here for female journalists which called. for this levy at anyway i
6:26 pm
mean it is very civil far from and. till now the owner is asking why they have bombed his car his house he does not know the last point that everywhere in gaza when we are moving we would see the imagine city working for the meaning or for fixing the electricity in it were a situation it work and. and the water network there are thousands of people according to their minister but if the source is they don't then just the other day to see if hundreds of complaints calling them they are in need for water and there was there is shortage of water because of the is that are you bombing of the man drawled i know you one of the points which cause water problem water shortages. that they said on a zation. station near the sea has been stopped according to the mayor
6:27 pm
of of gaza because of those 3 to bombing so now we have 7 and similar and different kinds of problems health water electricity and internet. and security. ok many thanks for bringing us up to date that is our palestinian journalist and gaza residents who are explaining how dire the humanitarian situation is there in gaza the people can't access the hospitals because the roads have been destroyed they're running out of fuel and water the ministry of health which is standing in from tof is no longer functioning things like ovid a very few people in palestine have been vaccinated against covert will that no longer even. even something that they are focusing on at the moment we can take you now to southern israel our correspond imraan khan is live there for us tell us
6:28 pm
exactly why you were there and what the situation is. well today was supposed to be a day of breakthrough you heard by colleagues talk about the diet shortages of medicines of aid that needs to get into gaza well the united nations had organized an aid convoy to come and now that aid convoy arrived at the crim. crossing into gaza it's about 2 miles that way but it didn't get through all throughout the day we've been hearing israeli bombardment by land and sea on the gaza strip here when i have. there were several rockets attacks that came through most of them intercepted by the israeli defense system the so-called dying but there were 2 key incidents i think that really stopped the aid convoy getting through the 1st one was
6:29 pm
a barge of rockets coming from gaza that injured it 10 people now 2 of those actually people succumbed to their injuries and they later died and then the actual checkpoint itself leading into gaza karim who saw them there was a mortar that landed the injured and israeli soldiers know that stage i spoke to one of my contacts at the united nations i said is this aid convoy going to get through and he said no it's not going to go no aid is going to get through into gaza and i was we was stood it there were 3 mobile hospitals supplied by the jordanian army that were on their way they actually stopped quite close to where we were and the israeli police escorted them back out so they didn't make it down to the checkpoint so what was supposed to be a breakthrough getting some aid in to gaza i mean the aid has been called a trickle. who's the head of the norwegian refugee council he was on our air
6:30 pm
a few hours ago saying is nowhere near enough well that aid that's nowhere near enough is actually even in gaza right now and so it remains to be seen whether. the aid will get through tomorrow however given everything that we've seen today it's still on likely no one suggesting that they have any kind of confidence of the 8 might get through so it's a real real challenge for all of the aid agencies it wasn't just the united nations they were simply carrying the aid the people like medicine the world health organization and other organizations as well and you saw from my colleagues as i saying in gaza how died early. eighty's for the palestinians and bring us up to date in terms of the impact this is having on the israelis because i believe they have been 2 israeli soldiers injured today. absolutely well it's where we are right now just to give you some geography is
6:31 pm
a bomb shelter that's right next to a bus station the bomb shelters been there for a number of years every so often when the sirens go off and they've been going off throughout the day people come by here they stop in the middle of the road and they run in to the bomb shelter we've seen soldiers do that we've seen israeli citizens do that there is a sense that they. in fear of where these rockets landing in different parts of different cities and different fields and whatever so we have do get this sense of fit but you have to understand there is the israeli missile defense system and it is very good intercept most of the rockets that come through just to give you an idea when those rockets actually come through you see a missile launched from the israeli side and it targets the rocket from the palestinian side and explodes in the air so very few rockets actually land but the palestinians on the gaza side have managed to evade some of the system so that's
6:32 pm
really still what's going on however i mean we are talking about a very sophisticated defense mechanism system but rockets are still getting through they are indeed and i believe ordinary israeli citizens have also been killed so it's not just right and soldiers who have been impacted. that's absolutely right they were in they were far more because it happened very close to where we were one of the israeli soldiers actually that you mentioned was actually taken just around the corner from where we're just about 4 meters away he was put into an ambulance and driven off the israelis do have a very sophisticated mechanism to get people to hospital they eat the ability to do so they know where the hospitals are is a very sophisticated way of getting people that have been injured in these rocket attacks to hospital but yes to do. the same when it comes to gaza where simply
6:33 pm
they're running out of space in hospitals because of the heavy bombardment by air land and sea so we are seeing rockets get through people are being injured and we're seeing these rockets continue throughout the night but you have to balance out with the fact that gaza is still being pounded from the air land and sea now as long as this keeps carrying on all of the aid agencies that i've spoken to throughout the day a very worried that they're not going to able to get the aid in to gaza unless there's some sort of breakthrough some sort of cease fire that was supposed to happen today and it didn't like it many thanks for the update on that for us in southern israel. well prime minister benjamin netanyahu was in beer sheva which is in southern israel just a short while ago and he warned the military operation against hamas will continue . to fuel. our enemy see what price we are charging for the question against us i'm
6:34 pm
sure they will learn the lesson we will continue the operation in gaza no matter how long it takes we took on hamas years back and the enemies around us are learning their lessons of what we can do to them if they dare to attack us. well the united states has been monitoring the situation defense secretary lloyd austin has discussed the latest developments with his israeli counterpart benny gantz let's go to the white house and speak to can be held kelly yesterday there was that phone call we've been talking about between president biden and benjamin netanyahu where he expressed support for a cease fire for the 1st time any other developments to talk coming through from the u.s. that could possibly put more pressure on israel to bring about some kind of cease fire. the white house press secretary has been talking with reporters on route to the u.s. state of michigan where the u.s. president will be speaking today at
6:35 pm
a ford motor plant this is the place that manufactures electric vehicles and what we can tell you is that the white house press secretary jeh psaki acknowledging that there has been a shift in strategy as a result of that phone call between the u.s. president and the israeli prime minister this nudge if you will a very measured one but supporting a cease fire that appears to have gone unheeded this is certainly caused some division here in the united states there are the president's critics particularly on the republican side this say the president has a band and a long standing support for israel and its right to defense but certainly this is something members of his own democratic party have been pushing for at least on the more progressive wing and the white house press secretary saying that this is something that came about after careful conversation discussions and that ultimately what will continue now as a result of the president's shift in position now supporting
6:36 pm
a cease fire is that there will continue to be this diplomacy that is taking place on a myriad of levels and that this diplomacy they hope will result in a reduction in violence but again it appears just in the hours following this phone call between the 2 leaders that the urging for a cease fire again has gone unheeded. kimberly give us a sense of how much pressure you think u.s. president biden is when it comes to this conflict between israel and palestine because he's made a big thing about human rights being a key part of his regime and he's been criticized as me so far about the fact that so far he hasn't done very much to stop what is been escalating in the middle east. right we have to be really careful when we use the word regime that can be kind of
6:37 pm
a loaded word i think we tend to prefer to use the word governments to talk about sort of particularly when they're democratically elected but i think what it is important to note is that when it comes to the biden administration that in fact there is going to be some noticeable pressure that he's going to likely face in michigan given the fact that this is a state that has a very large arab american population and you have to remember that many of the people living in this state are palestinian and their tax dollars are being used to fund the israeli military that of course is having a very extensive effect perhaps on some of their friends and family so this is going to be emotional and joe biden may walk straight into that we know that there are 3 different protests that are planned and that many of the speakers who are already participating in some of these demonstrations are saying as you pointed out
6:38 pm
that the buying of ministration promise to put as its foundation for foreign policy on human rights and so they're trying to figure out what happened in this case and so i think you're right there is a lot of pressure on joe biden right now given the fact that he's got divisions within his democratic party he's been criticized from conservatives and he's also been criticized by some of the very americans 6 that he said he was going to stand up for so he's in a very difficult position right now walking sort of this tight rope in trying to please many different factions and so far it appears that he has been unsuccessful in the other big goal and that is ending the violence which continues unabated. many things that can be healthy for the white house. let's return now to the occupied west bank and the to abram who is in ramallah so what started
6:39 pm
off very much as a general strike turned into a violent protest speaking to you earlier you said it has been relatively quiet in the in the last hour or so what is the situation there now. you can probably hear the volleys of tear gas behind him leave the israeli army has exceptionally went to the other side of the street firing the young people from the other side and we've seen lots and lots of ambulances had from here towards hospitals i've probably counted 4. people here are saying maybe there are 5 ambulances carrying wounded people so it goes an absent flows sometimes we see. the situation calming down at other times like this one we see the israeli army firing tear gas sometimes rubber coated steel bullets and even sometimes we've been
6:40 pm
hearing live ammunition every now and then so it is kind of a. dangerous situation because when the israeli army it went through the other streets we were are the people who are here the only occurs thought that the army is coming their side so. going back to what happened earlier today palestinians have been fighting the israeli army with rocks sometimes with molotov cocktails so the general feeling was that it wasn't an armed protest and then we've seen what we believe where armed palestinians militants fired to these ready soldiers who are near the illegal. but. then the israeli army fired back with live ammunition leading to. chaos in the scene. we
6:41 pm
understand that the palestinians were trying to. fire 2 to send fireworks at the israeli drone that is firing tear gas so the general feeling here that it wasn't an armed protest the steward. developed quickly but then as we can see now we're seeing less and less numbers of people and the situation is relatively calmer than it was 2 hours ago it does that's interesting because you were saying earlier that many families had come out to the strike many with children so many thousands of people today and then clearly things escalated things turned violent why do you think that happened i mean presumably many of those families wouldn't have come out if. if they had realized that that was going to happen. many were telling us that they werent part of
6:42 pm
the protests they wouldn't participate in but then when they heard that there's a general strike when they felt that there was a sense of unity between palestinians here in the occupied west bank and those living inside of israel or inside occupied east jerusalem they felt that this is the moment that they've been waiting for to participate in prove this that could and the israeli occupation this was the feeling that we got from families that we've been speaking to here and i'll just throughout the day but when that violent exchange of fire happens we've seen families take their children away they were standing here near us we are on a hill overlooking the confrontations but then when they heard the fire they left with their families they left the scene now it is not unusual. scenario to see palestinians firing at the israeli army so it's rare in the west bank is not known
6:43 pm
for arms the israeli army has usually with at best palestinians who are carrying arms and take those weapons from them so it is not something usual and it has definitely led many people to leave but there are still protesters here who are still throwing rocks and molotov cocktails at the israeli soldiers and when talking about the strike that was organized in the 1st place that was organized yesterday and when people initially came out i mean to send extend that was pretty unprecedented all those people coming out in support of what is happening to the palestinians. so the call initially started by palestinians in israel and then soon after many activists here in the occupied west bank wanted to join in bay have been calling on palestinians to take part in a general strike that call has been widespread on social media leading also fatah
6:44 pm
party to ask the government to participate in the strike we've seen the palestinian government then ask its employees to take the day off to be able to participate in protests across the west bank and many were telling us that in decades this was the 1st time they feel the sense of unity between palestinians here and there was living in israel they feel they say that they they want to they see that they felt a spark of hope that they can change things on the ground families who haven't ever been able to or been interested to come to confrontations have been participating in these protests so there was this general sense of unity and hope and this is led many palestinians to take part in the strike indeed. and it's whether recapping for any people joining us now on al-jazeera about
6:45 pm
why we are here why we are focusing on this particular assault in ramallah took us through the events of the last hour last few hours. so the protesters have come here to. beat a city each is it is near 0 and it is adjacent to an illegal israeli settlement called but also there is a building that for many palestinians it through present these really occupation is the known as the civil administration but it's a military section that deals with the palestinians any issues that have to do with permits to get inside israel for work or for even hospitals all of that is being conducted here no many aspects of palestinians live lives are conducted by this body 'd this israeli body and even a palestinian official has said that whoever is in charge of that in that building

is actually the de facto prime minister of palestine because he would be the one in control of people's lives so this is why palestinians have come to this area it has a significance in the symbolism when it comes to the israeli occupation of course many palestinians were joining protests in different parts of the west and here we've been seeing more and more people come and this was the largest protest a few hours ago it was the largest since the start of the escalation on monday but then when the violent exchange of fire between what we believe are palestinian militants and the israeli soldiers here we've seen lots of people leave the scene as well as the israeli army shooting live ammunition of the protesters taking them . as we're taking them to hospitals and according to

the red crescent 43 palestinians all in all in the occupied west bank with injured by live fire and that 26 of those injuries happened here near the illegal settlement that's out. ok many thanks for that for now i need to bring him near ramallah the situation there seems relatively calm there are still. protesters out there on the hill below her we can try and get the situation now elsewhere in israel specifically harry forsett who is in. in in bethlehem again it looks like a quiet street picture behind you but that wasn't the case a short while ago talk us through the events of the last 2 hours or so. you know we're here in new york west bank in bethlehem and the situation is still
6:48 pm
ongoing i mean yes it is less violent than it was a little while ago but everything in these situations is relative what we're looking at is a group of israeli troops on the right hand side of the road have been moving down this street there are just a few palestinian protesters that we can see at least who remain in the occasional rock still coming in towards some of the troops they were moving down there's a sniper team with some other support soldiers around them who are moving down here in sort of a tactical fashion as if they were in a gun battle during incoming that we saw coming the other way was the occasional rock near them what we saw earlier was sniper fire being used to try to clear the protests not just clear the protests but obviously injure palestinian protesters we saw one of them shot and went down and was taken away by an ambulance that's one that we've seen but we know that there have been 12 live fire injuries
6:49 pm
reported a little earlier than that there were another 11 rubber coated steel bullets injuries one of which at least was a puncture wound to the leg and dozens and dozens of people have been injured by tear gas inhalation on this street which is often a sign site of friction of violence between palestinian protesters and israeli soldiers the soldiers have been using tear gas rubber coated steel bullets stun grenades. the skunk water the chemical laced foul smelling water and most importantly they've been using live ammunition pretty liberally by the number of injuries that we've been reported her it's a scene we were talking to. the day started with quite peacefully many families turning up. to protest with their children and then
6:50 pm
things took a turn for. the movie essentially was that the case where you are was was it a similar situation there people coming out coming out in solidarity with the palestinians but then getting a little hijacked by the violence. not really not here we did see people gathering with some music on our way in but that was quite a long way from from this point of frequent confrontation here by the security separation wall in bethlehem and what we saw was this streets people marching down it in quite a large number several 100 bigger than the usual protests that we've got used to seeing in recent years here in bethlehem and when they got about a little over halfway the distance between where we are and the far end that we can see that is when the door opened close to us here big metal door and jeeps
6:51 pm
rushed out and fired tear gas immediately so it was a violent from the start that violence was coming from the use of a very very highly concentrated tear gas rounds coming from the israelis straight into that protest before any of the stone throwing or anything else took place from the moment that there was that dispersal there were various groups the tried to remain and chant as others got closer in smaller groups to try to throw stones and you slingshots to throw marbles at this very heavily fortified area and each time there was a phase like that different tactics appeared to be used at one stage they rushed out the israeli army and sort of rushed them away another stage they managed to capture by it seemed hiding themselves in a building close to where the stone throwers were they captured one of them and dragged him away before then stationing a sniper team here on this road to try to presumably to try to prevent more stern
6:52 pm
throws coming back again each phase they then retreat inside they appear to wait for stone throwing to take place then we saw tear gas skunk water used to disperse the following phase and then after that there was no sort of rushing out into this . we just heard sniper fire and one man fall down the street as he was taken away by ambulance harry i believe in the nearby east jerusalem neighborhood of shakes iraq there's been a similar situation with police using stun grenades. and water cannons and so on. remind us about the importance of say general and how this current conflicts. i think it's fair to say pretty much stemmed from what happened there. sure i mean would it just to.

elucidate that clarify the geography we're here in bethlehem in your occupied west bank. relatively close to jerusalem but not obviously in jerusalem is in occupied east jerusalem it in unilaterally annexed area by israel which is internationally viewed under international law as being under military occupation and that is that the key issue as far as those families are concerned the israeli legal system is being used to try to in its terms victim from land that a jewish corporation has argued in the court in the so far found support in the israeli courts for the ownership of of the land pre 948 pre the creation of a state of israel pre the. evacuation or forced evacuation but of course forcible displacement of hundreds of thousands of people including the refugees who were given that land in east jerusalem by the event jordanian rulers between 148 and 967
6:54 pm
now they face eviction and they face possible displacement from this new place they have no right to try to claim back under really are the israeli law what they can claim to have had and to have lost inside israel and that is the the absolute knob of the issue that they've been arguing and they've been arguing it especially the al could family the younger members of that family extremely effectively online it is really got a groundswell of success that campaign internationally and in the occupied west bank as well and combined with what we saw during ramadan which was the decision to close off a very important public square in occupied east jerusalem just outside the walls of the city where people would usually gather after night time prayers during ramadan that decision by the security forces the situation inside. it all exploded the monday before last. in your larger mosque compound and then of course with the

launching of rockets by hamas on jerusalem and this is where we are now all of it is really coalescing and feeling beings long term grievances the situation in the occupied west bank the situation in particular which is so big so badly economically hit by coronavirus restrictions as much as anything else more than 50 years of occupation and this immediate sort of fueling factor of what we're seeing in jerusalem what we're seeing from gaza this is one of the biggest protests come confrontations that i've certainly seen in my 4 years reporting on this area parea been full focusing a lot on the protests today but it's worth pointing out that the conflict itself is still continuing the bombs still continuing on both sides the u.s. president president biden has expressed support now for a cease fire between israel and hamas how much pressure do you think that is likely

to put. on prime minister netanyahu what is the mood music from the politicians. well i mean the the public facing. statements coming from the israeli government have been extremely hard line that they will continue there is reporting that the israeli military is very much in favor of continuing and making the most. in this very grim calculus given the number of dead that we're seeing mounting inside gaza of this opportunity to do real damage so harass and its infrastructure and so that is what continues to happen now in the background the americans and increasingly in the foreground they are saying more openly now that they are in favor president biden himself of a cease fire as soon as practically possible but at the same time they maintain
6:57 pm
this very strong support for the israeli right of self-defense as they put it. and be it would be ability therefore for israel to continue there is extreme in it that there has been. international pressure there is pressure we're told from the americans behind the scenes to try to bring this to a close there has been reporting that it may well be done so within a couple of days but again the public facing messaging from the israeli government is that they intend to continue to some time yet. ok many thanks for that our correspondent harry force of that for us in bethlehem in the occupied west bank let's see if we can take a look at some of the live pictures again remember today was a day that palestinian officials had called for a general strike in the occupied territories. eventually thousands of people took to the streets. and protest essentially turned violent we're seeing the
