9:01 pm
hamas rockets kill 2 israelis in just 13 and a start as israel continues bombarding gaza and warns of an unprecedented strike on new areas of the besieged strip. in other news more than 20 are dead and dozens more are missing as a strong so i clone parts of india. all than 5000 migrants cross into the spanish and clave of quests from morocco is the largest single day influx into the city. on far as my with this board to roger federer's comeback didn't go quite to plan a 39 year old was defeated at the geneva open in straight satsang his 1st match in over 2 months but they're not.
9:02 pm
for the 1st time in decades from the jordan river all the way to the mediterranean sea palestinians both in the occupied territories and those living in israel have been taking part in protests and a general strike they've been calling it a day of rage. this was bethlehem in the occupied west bank where they have been confrontations between israeli security forces palestinian protesters at least 12 demonstrators were injured after israeli forces used live ammunition and there were similar scenes near ramallah where there have been armed confrontations between some protesters an israeli forces it was tense to in nablus where demonstrators faced off with israeli soldiers 4 palestinians were killed there and more than 160 others injured all across the west bank 2 israeli soldiers were wounded. and
9:03 pm
earlier this was the scene near damascus gate in the occupied east jerusalem protesters heeding calls for demonstrations but they were met with an israeli crackdown a photojournalist was targeted and protesters were beaten and all across towns and cities in israel palestinian israelis have been observing that general strike shops and businesses have been shuttered. let's go straight to our correspondent need to bring him who's in ramallah in the occupied west bank need to you're back in the studio now but you've been out in ramallah throughout the day they have been many violent protests sum up the day for us. poor palestinians were killed on tuesday 3 of them in the confrontations with the scene in different cities in the occupied west bank the 4th has been killed by israeli forces fire in the morning and have grown in the israeli army says that he
9:04 pm
attempted to carry out an attack against israeli forces that there near the brahimi mosque but the rest were killed in these confrontations that we've seen erupt in different cities in the west bank and the most intense of those was at the northern entrance of this is near the illegal settlement of bits where we've also within the exchange of fire between what we believe are palestinian fighters and the israeli soldiers but in general the use of life and munition has been intensifying by the israeli forces even before we witness that exchange of fire and we've seen dozens of palestinians being injured some were carried by ambulance to the hospital some by private cars and according to the health ministry now 9 palestinians are in critical condition so conditions so the number of those who were killed who were
9:05 pm
wounded who were killed could be rising up and remember today was an important day for palestinians many protesters took to the streets thousands we've seen. but only hundreds were left near the north. after the exchange of fire so we've seen less brutus over the day and we've seen also an intensive use of tear gas why the israeli forces it was a general strike all walks of lives were shot down here in the occupied west bank and palestinians say it's the 1st time in decades that they felt united across the political divide many things that need to empower him for us in ramallah giving us the very latest. let's turn to gaza where the death toll from israel's bombardment keeps rising and the humanitarian situation is only getting worse the u.n. security council has been meeting today behind closed doors for some sort of diplomatic
9:06 pm
solution to end the bloodshed if foreign ministers have also held an emergency meeting and also called for a ceasefire we shoot for the right of defense to israel and that right to security also for the palestinians and we can see that security for israel and palestine requires that true political solution because only a true shalit political solution could bring peace and for doing that we need to restore a polite political horizon now their priority to urgency is to stop violence and to implement the ceasefire israeli asteroids have killed at least $214.00 palestinians in gaza that includes now $61.00 children hundreds of buildings have been flattened thousands of people are homeless the united nations is urging israel
9:07 pm
to open a 2nd crossing to allow much needed aid into the besieged territory it is critical that the air is crossing is also been for the entry and exit of critical humanitarian staff humanitarian access into and out of gaza for staff and goods must be sustained and appropriate measures taken to ensure safe movement within gaza overnight we received extremely worrying reports of additional of additional infrastructure civilian infrastructure being hit in gaza including in the central kovan 1000 testing lab and other health and humanitarian facilities in addition we continue to receive reports of significant displacement of palestinians within the gaza strip. meanwhile in southern israel rocket attacks by hamas and allied factions have killed 2 people today and injured 14 others as israel's prime minister benjamin netanyahu says the military operation against hamas in gaza will continue and people with. our enemy see what price we are charging for the
9:08 pm
aggression against us i'm sure they will learn the lesson we will continue the operation in gaza no matter how long it takes we took on hamas years back and the enemies around us are learning their lessons of what we can do to them if they dare to attack us. let's go straight to our correspondent sof what his life for us in gaza suffer it's we know that as night falls many people in gaza are waiting for bombs to fall what is the latest situation where you are. the latest situation is a few minutes ago 2 least 2 rockets were fired from gaza into southern israel we could see that be right behind us and we could see also the israeli defense system and trying to intercept the rockets that were fired from from gaza a remarkable thing indeed sturrock is that they were fired. shortly is that they
9:09 pm
looked like longer range of the earlier. today we witnessed or we could see the palestinian. adopted and you talk take off firing more. attacks on the rockets so far and firing the rockets towards the soldiers deploying across gaza israeli border those rockets into israeli towns. that are normally these toxic we remember the last war in 2014 the the adopted such tactics of the last 2 or 3 days of the escalation on dug up on the other hand. officials told our stock still there is no positive indication of any cease fire they have been receiving lots of phone calls from international mediators seeking to reach either mutual. one sided ceasefire but
9:10 pm
according to officials that once the israelis stop. their practices in jerusalem that are going to them then we can we can seize the fire and we are ready to stop we don't ask anything for gaza according to going back to the humanitarian. issues in gaza are there to c.d.'s and critical humanitarian deterioration our electricity our health water supply residential areas that. had been totally destroyed in certain places so which will increase more humanitarian increasing crisis to the own going already ones because of 15 or after 15 years of israeli blockade the minister of health is is the most critical one or we have been hearing lots of appeals from them appealing the international community appealing international humanitarian organization to donate to
9:11 pm
or to provide them with. medical supplies because they are they said they are 1 not able to deal with the huge wave is waves a huge number of people are arriving to the hospital. where injured during 9 days almost and over israel escalation on gaza on the other hand also the minister of health ses that they had to stop all covered 19. let's say tests because. the lab of the ministry of health. seriously damaged because of the nearby bomb being they said also they have. also the. fate they have been facing lots of problem in receiving all of the covered 19 infected people because the hospitals are engaged more in the injured people than
9:12 pm
the covered 19. patients also pounding the pandemic here in gaza last year the ministry of health adopted certain. 'd preventative or prevention or protection protocol like the rest of the world but since many people had to evacuate their their homes especially those who live near the borders and stay crowded in and in classrooms in the u. and schools so this leads for more serious than fiction. could be 1000 in fiction we could see 5060 people in one room using old used because they have no other choice but. 'd to use such furniture since they have to leave everything behind them infrastructure roads have been damaged some are posh areas some are completely. electricity teams have been deployed
9:13 pm
the whole day in order to fix. as much as they could according to what they said from the damage power or electricity networks water supply is also the municipality is facing lots of difficulties in deploying their teams because they said that the mayor of gaza said that already the municipality have been suffering from years of blockade they need more equipment more advanced equipment to fit the current. deterioration of. 9 days of escalation so also he meant he had a fair to the sanitation to. the teams that are supposed 'd they are already collecting the garbage from different places all over the gaza strip he said. soon they will not be able to collect the garbage and drop it. in the special areas 6 for for that which are the gaza israeli border he said they
9:14 pm
are running out of fuel their equipment is also the one perfect anymore of the huge number of destruction or the huge number of garbage that they have to deal with following 9 days of of escalation. ok many thanks for that update stuff. there for us live in gaza painting a picture of the desperate humanitarian situation that many people in gaza facing let's go to our correspondent imran khan who joins us from southern israel and you i believe the been getting some updates from the israeli military on another perhaps big onslaught on gaza tonight what are you hearing. well these ready spokesman said in these exact words that they really are mean we're going to use an unprecedented strike force against goals and targets to night
9:15 pm
but they were going to target places that hadn't previously been targeted by the israeli military now we don't know what that means but it was a very strong statement from the israeli army spokesman he was very blunt that they were going to use overwhelming force all the way throughout the day we've been hearing that dull thud of israeli bombardment coming from et to add and see into the gaza strip piece geography it's very dark at the moment but you can probably just see the lights of gaza coming on in the background still so that electricity shortages that so that's probably why it's not as bright as it should be and that leads me on to the humanitarian crisis that was facing today was supposed to be a breakthrough supposed to be a moment where the united nations were going to send an aid convoy into gaza now this wasn't a magic wand it was going to solve causes problems it was a drop in the ocean but it was something that didn't happen that we don't know why
9:16 pm
that didn't happen at some point in the early hours of the morning there was real confusion from the israeli army whether they were going to open the kind of. crossing which is only just a few kilometers down this road now the the 1st statement came out saying we're not going to open the crossing then there was another statement that came out saying we are in discussions to open the crossing the united nations sent in a convoy of aid expecting to get through we think that that aid is still at the carom. crossing into gaza whilst we were ahead we saw 3 jordanian military supplied field hospitals come in they didn't even get as far. crossing through the gaza barrier they went about half a mile up the road and they turned back now we tried to speak to the drivers we were moved on by the israeli army who are the israeli police actually they wouldn't
9:17 pm
let us speak to them so we have no idea why they turned back there are we know on going discussions to try and get that aid into gaza via that crossing through the barrier but whether that happens or not now all throughout the day i've already talked about these are a bombardment that have been several rocket attacks throughout the day to most serious ones where one which injured at least 10 people to those people farm workers subsequently died of injuries and then there was a mortar attack on the current. checkpoint itself where an israeli soldier was injured we don't know whether that played in to the decision to not let the convoy cross or whether that decision was made to preheat that attack ok many thanks for the updates on that for us from southern israel
9:18 pm
well as we mentioned earlier the u.n. security council has been holding discussions today on the situation in israel and palestine usko to christensen amy who was at that briefing at the u.n. so kristen this statement that we got from the united nations security council comes off an open meeting that was held in some on sunday where they failed to come up with a joint statement was any progress made. from the closed door meeting that took place today. unfortunately no progress to report from the security council we know this was the 4th meeting in just over a week that they've held it was held behind closed doors. while the united states president joe biden has elevated his language and called for a cease fire in the region the united states is still unwilling to put such language in a formal statement issued by the security council the most powerful body here at
9:19 pm
the united nations in the absence of security council actions countries are doing other things to keep the spotlight on the situation including calling for a general assembly meeting this thursday that was called for by the arab group here at the united nations as well as the organization for the islamic for islamic cooperation and just a little while ago we heard from representatives of those 2 organizations and the palestinian ambassador to the united nations riyadh mom sorer who talked about their ongoing efforts to get international backing behind a statement calling for a cease fire he did say that the silence of the security council in his view was quote shameful given that this is the body charged with international peace and security and protection of the vulnerable he said that all of the ambassadors in
9:20 pm
the countries including the united states are saying largely similar things behind closed doors that they want to see an end to the violence but they just have been unable to make it formal as a result of the united states here's a little bit more of the conversation that we had. can you say clearly you're going ahead with this meeting of the general assembly on thursday due to your frustrations at the security council but in the last 24 hours president biden has finally called for a cease fire elevated his rhetoric did that give you any hope that today coming out of the security council the united states might have softened its position a bit on a statement are you seeing any difference and their level of engagement in the last 24 hours or do you think that's window dressing at this point we welcome any effort by anyone in order to expose the process of putting an end to this aggression said
9:21 pm
thinly president biden he is a powerful leader and capable of influencing influencing the israeli leadership to accept a cease fire you know called and we sincerely hope that he can succeed in his efforts with the efforts of everyone else who is involved in this endeavor to reach an agreement on a cease fire as we speak any time soon our objective is to put an end to that idea and the suffering of all of the. in addition to china norway and tunisia calling for this additional meeting today on the situation in the middle east we know that the chinese ambassador to the united nations who currently holds the presidency of the security council will hold a press briefing later today again we're seeing countries use their weight individually to try to keep the spotlight on the issue in the absence of collective
9:22 pm
action we will have this general assembly meeting on thursday foreign ministers are expected to speak at that event and right now as i speak to you just a block away from here hundreds of people have gathered outside of the israeli ambassador the israeli consulate the israeli mission to the united nations and there's a demonstration going on there college for more action on the part of the security council in calling on israel to back down so not a lot of action on the part of the security council formally but certainly a lot of diplomacy going on here at the united nations still as the violence wages on. many thanks for that update kristen salumi for us at the u.n. . let's bring in marwan bashar al jazeera senior political analyst he joins us live now from doha bar on the been various international voices speaking out today calling for a cease fire including the e.u.
9:23 pm
united nations trying to come up with some sort of joint message on a cease fire so far failing. what difference does it make any of these voices when it comes to bringing about some sort of end to this conflict because from what we're seeing. in the messages we're guessing just speaking to our correspondent in southern israel a little earlier the violence is continuing there will be more bombardment from israel into gaza tonight. absolutely and i don't see any of this being serious about stopping the fighting the 2nd day not serious about oppression and desire to stop what's been barred meant and clearly there is no diplomatic leverage been used against either party that we know of i'm sure there's a lot of things happening behind the scenes but in
9:24 pm
a spot as the most important party which is the united states today and the israelis publicly that they must stop firing short of that i don't think we're going to see anything serious. and anytime soon and any time soon is key here why because it's been more than a week and if we go on a far another week the the human costs the economic costs for the palestinians in gaza is show enormous that it's doubling and tripling that we are truly facing a threat should be so if this is if the cease fire is not implemented sooner rather than later then i think it's just there's absolutely no point of it in the 1st place marwan what do you think. israel is waiting for if it feels like they're trying to reach a certain point trying to achieve something from what we can see
9:25 pm
a lot of damage has already been done the humanitarian situation is dire in gaza when will they stop. you would you would wonder if there are any more targets to be hit and that small boat or what a populated strip where more than 2000000 people live but clearly if from what have we heard from prime minister that the now today is something quite cynical something i haven't heard before the way it was formulated we said that we're going to continue fighting we've got to continue shooting we got to continue to run by being the gaza until other parties in the region learned the lesson that's a very very cynical statement coming from the prime minister of israel and it's quite arrogant. because that means israel's committing outright better and admitting it because using the palestinians and holding it to show or to teach
9:26 pm
a lesson for a political end as it wet that's that's quite a dangerous thing but no matter what more to the point about the the end game if you were in flint and now i would say that ought high elements of just mending quickly once it is to destroy the infrastructure of hamas in the gaza strip and hamas has proven to be a formidable enemy and there's a shooting it's rockets to it is to basically destroy the infrastructure whether it's economic whether it's municipal administers they've everything was hit the government that municipal it's the sewers the roads everything 3 it basically hitting the livelihood of gazans making sure that they get so angry so desperate that they will turn on against hamas which has basically defected will gaza and 4th it is unit to such fights now then yeah those political base which is really
9:27 pm
a radical phonetic racist towards the palestinian and fifa must. but not least that hatch it's the most important that the mill has used this. dredger day for the last several days weeks it order to stay in power because we all know that if he if he loses the premier ship he will be is more likely to end up in prison because he's on trial for all serious charges of fraud corruption and so on so forth unlike his predecessor he will probably end up in jail if he doesn't admit to the premiership show he is cynically cynical using the tragedy of guys a continuing the warning and rallying support among the right wingers in israel as well as the united states and others in order to stay in power that's a very very cynical captains maran bashar al jazeera senior political analyst speaking to us there from doha thanks. we're joined now by
9:28 pm
musician activists roger waters in new york many thanks for joining us on al-jazeera the news out he of course have been involved in trying to lift the the voice of palestinians for a long time now what is your initial reaction to what is happening than now. just been watching the last 20 minutes of your program so like my one be shot of the who who mentioned this fact i saw all of netanyahu standing proudly and smugly in front of an f. 16 or whatever the sleet looking israeli fighter jet was that was every show boasting about his power to inflict pain on its neighbors. you know this this is like this is a classic you sound is so sure. using his power in the power of his platform this man feels inviolate he feels that he can get away with anything and the sad and
9:29 pm
sick thing is he can't and why can't a because exactly is your correspondent. marwan shero who have just been watching said the only job i buy or the government of the united states for america has the power to press the oath but turn off the switch or the genocidal bombing of the palestinians in gaza city so what i'm in the i am i'm done by the disregard for human life and human rights and freedom and the laurens and also. the opinions of the whole of global civil society who by and large more and more are coming to be 100 percent understanding that this racist apartheid exercise which is the state of israel
9:30 pm
has got to be brought to heel by us we the people of the world we the peoples of the united nations says i mean how he said his so let me pick you up are mad when you talk about what will be looking at yourself as a musician as a famous musician what can you do. to make a difference to what is going on in in that particular conflict. i can stand on this rooftop and shout at the top of my lungs and i'm not saying until somebody hears me because people do him a i actually do have a platform of sorts i can encourage the choir to sing with a loud to and louder and louder voice every day not just in palestine but all over the world to saying we shall overcome together because we will because this situation is completely untenable everybody with an i.q. above room temperature that knows that israel is
9:31 pm
a failed son is experiment it is ofa this will not go on i am very the meeting i had before this i had a weapon out with some some people in anger and there's going to be a huge mass demonstration in london on saturday where they're going to march hundreds of thousands of people will march carrying palestinian from the embankment to hyde park because this is happening in cities all over the world why you know i keep him at the get use name i want to be shot i. was baffled he claims and i'm sure he is i noticed as well in the previous clip my friend riyadh monsoor who i met in 2012 when i spoke at the united nations the human rights commission of when the russell tribe in was in new york discussing these moves this is now 9 years ago and we're still looking at pictures of this man here and his
9:32 pm
blue shirt with the z. that dying over deep deep the damage child in itself and yet somehow the united states of america refuses to lift a finger to stop it and they could joe biden could stop this in a heartbeat. and so what is it we are i don't know but that's all i can do all i can do is to continue to express my absolute outrage and to try and stop people referring to this is a war or a conflict it's not it's the oppression of an indigenous people by a settler colonialist. it's interesting a root and it's full i'm sorry to interrupt you roger it's interesting that you say you have a platform you do have a platform as a very famous musician and there are others like you who. want to get their voice heard on this issue. but as you say when it comes down to
9:33 pm
it the governments of the world are holding back how is it that platforms like yours can really make a difference that's a my platform it's not the fact that i used to be in the pink floyd my platform back hot. just like all my comrades all over the world who are in some right direction on this issue and many other issues. ok so that that's where the but for me is we there are we are many many many there were 20000000 of us in the streets into those. before the invasion of iraq for instance that's a lot of people ok we didn't prevent bush and blair and cheney and the rest of them from continuing with their insane endeavor in iraq but we did take to the streets and we did speak out and we were heard and people recognize in us
9:34 pm
outpouring of our hearts and condemnation of this genocidal murder people recognize in us that need for human beings to act collectively and to express a love for one another across all religions nationalities all ages wards separation this that and the other and they recognize that that essentially is what brings joy to their lives as much joy as we get and the murder of your neighbors provides you with nothing in the end but darkness and misery ok so that is what gives me a platform is those beliefs nothing to do with music ok thank you for your time roger waters speaking to us from new york thank you hey gaza my heart is with you my heart goes out to our lead view let's put an end to this cease fire now
9:35 pm
now u.s. president joe biden has been on the process from progressive members of his democratic party who want his administration to speak out against israel's attacks on gaza palestinian american democratic congresswoman roseta taib has been a vocal critic to the short while ago biden directly addressed tayyiba who made an impassioned speech defending the rights of palestinians in congress and she. believed were regime. i tell you what recently i want to say to you that i admire your intellect i admire your passion and i admire your concern for so many other people hence my from my heart and crave your grandmamma and family well i promise them in everything you see they are in the west bank your fighter in god thank you for being. there have been allegations that media reporting especially in
9:36 pm
the west about gaza and the occupied palestinian territories is often biased. as an american journalist whose reporting sought to change the narrative about palestinians living on the israeli occupation here is an x. but excerpts from her documentary gaza fights for freedom. this is the furthest to get. putting your feet in the water on the sand the bear is the outermost border without permission from the israeli military. most will never be permitted to be. trapped in this place which is suffering one of the worst humanitarian crises in the world you find much more the misery you find happiness and joy. because it is not defined by our. struggle for freedom. is with us she joins me now from los angeles many thanks for speaking to us on the
9:37 pm
news out of your journalism has focused on the israeli palestinian conflict you made that documentary just a few years back are you surprised by how events playing out in the region. i'm surprised by the callousness of the us political establishment and the outright complicity of the corporate owned media apparatus that continues to obfuscate and complicate unnecessarily a very straightforward. problem here which is as roger waters articulated a settler colonial state that's premised on the ongoing ethnic cleansing and expulsion of the indigenous population and these atrocities are unfolding in with just a day shift silence from our entire political establishment it is just atrocious the that this continues to happen every few years with the us standing in the way
9:38 pm
of international accountability do you think films like you. can change or are changing at the disco a specific a in places like the us which backs israel. yeah i think americans grow up heavily conditioned and brainwashed to think of israel is essentially an extension of the us and you know we're told that it's the only democracy in the middle east and until we have a massive political education campaign that really makes us look at this issue critically with open eyes where we can really realize what democracy looks like within this area and what it is denying the 5000000 people 3000000 people in the occupied west bank and 2000000 people living in the besieged gaza strip basic democratic rights what kind of democracy prohibits 5000000 of its residents from actually having basic human rights you know we're talking about
9:39 pm
a brutal israeli military occupation that nice people the ability to protest hold up a flag political literature so yeah i think that education comes 1st and foremost and absolutely i think once you see the reality without you know being shrouded with what the u.s. media portrays it as of that's the tunnel complex conflict that's complicated and based on religion you can't unsee that and everyone who's watched my documentary takes that away especially as the documentary not only is the cinematic heroic portrayal of palestinian peace it's oppression but it also is such a creep that documentation of israeli war crimes this was a mass demonstration that took place in 28 june that really exemplifies what happens to palestinians when they peacefully struggle and protest like the international community continues to call on them to do they were met with sniper fire and this was direct targeting of children as young as 11 disabled people in wheelchairs medics administering medical aid and journalists documenting the
9:40 pm
protests and so we conclusively provide this this overwhelming evidence of israeli war crimes hoping that people can use it as a tool eventual hopefully hold international. international come to believe or israel for those who haven't watched your documentary tell us a little bit more about the making of your film gaza fights for freedom you were. you were in jerusalem did you get access to gaza. talk us through how how that film was put together. absolutely i was in the occupied west bank for a month documenting for empire files my investigative series that's based on you tube just about the occupation and things that were going on there of course i tried to get into gaza this is one of the world's largest humanitarian crisis that is being subsidized with my tax dollars and i have several colleagues that are on the ground within gaza that cannot leave unfortunately i was told by netanyahu is
9:41 pm
press office that i was a propagandist and not a journalist based on my work that had sided with palestinians in the past and i was also told that i was an iranian agent bizarrely so i mean i was working in selling my show to tell a story which is a latin american conglomerate and i had previously worked for russia today but and no way was i associated with the government of iran so that was very strange and so of course we worked through the blockade to get this footage and produce these interviews with my friends our photojournalists and producers in gaza and the footage that they got was absolutely incredible harrowing i mean they risked their lives every week at the great march to get their footage so they could show americans what the reality was really like because during this great march i remember you know one day and. 60 people were gunned down and cold blood and the way the media portrayed it was just that they died in clashes and it was just so
9:42 pm
disingenuous and we needed to show that that truth we wanted to depict the palestinian side and uplift those voices that are completely omitted from corporate media and we felt like this film did just that many thanks time with us. american dentist and t.v. presenter thanks. my. roundup of some other news now more than 100 people are missing after a barge sunk during a powerful cycling of the western coast of india search and rescue operations are on the way with all the west vessels also grounded or drift. sidetone talks a is awakening also making landfall in the state of goods are also monday evening chart that us reports. a rescue if it in the middle of
