6:00 pm
period in the field of me, professor jim alca leaning brings the brilliance of a pass to light point incredible, so much doesn't real. all we've done is block out them like from a room and then allow it to come to the school episode. one of science in a golden age on 0. ah, this is al jazeera ah, hello there, i misspelled your hand. this is the news our live from our headquarters here and go home. coming up in the next 60 minutes. stepping up international efforts, the end of the violence between israel and the palestinians popped up for love's travel to the regions and make sure a fragile fire homes. meanwhile,
6:01 pm
tensions remain high in the occupied territories. one palestinian man has been shot dead, and others have been arrested international, outrageous bene. ruth is accused of air piracy and kidnapping. constant diverting applies entertaining and opposition activists. and the un says the world remains at war with the corona virus. as health ministers from around the world meet to assess the fates of the sport history has been made and goals. p. j. championship 50 year old film nicholson. becoming the oldest ever major champion. ah, well us secretary of state anthony blinkin is traveling to the middle east days into the israel palestine ceasefire. president biden has said his quiet and relentless missy helped to end the conflict. but his administration is still facing
6:02 pm
growing criticism over its support for israel israeli attacks of kill 248 palestinians in gaza. while 13 people have been killed in israel as rockets were fired from gaza. and the banking has twisted that he's traveling to jerusalem ramallah, cairo, and a mon adding that the united states has engaged an intensive diplomacy to bring an end to the hostilities and to reduce tensions on as also been significant era diplomatic activity on monday. and with the addiction and jordanian foreign ministers meeting in amman to discuss the situation in the region. both have said it's important both israel and palestine with respect to the cease fire agreement. his roof was egypt and george and we'll continue working together to keep and uphold the legitimate rights of the palestinian people. we will ensure the creation of a palestinian state with eastern system as its capital. the palestinian cause is central to the conflict and the people there have sacrificed. a lot of our international regional partnerships are important to create the proper atmosphere to resolve the
6:03 pm
issue. to learn about the priority now is to coordinate and guarantee the truth is always respected and that there is no repetition of the israeli violations that exploded to the situation. and i am once again warning against the israeli siege of shakes shara. it is very unwanted because this will escalate matters again. the issue over the illegitimate displacement of people must be dealt with and the international community must never elaborate the violations that alex a mosque must also stop. while now our diplomatic editor james base joins us from western islam and white house correspondent, kimberly how could a standing by force in washington dc that start with james james blink and has a bit of a fragile balancing act to do when he head to the region just what kind of things would we be looking for out of this trip? well, i think it's interesting virt already before he even got here and he'll be leaving in a matter of hours,
6:04 pm
you have got most of the people with the exception of the israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu, who is going to be meeting having their own meetings ahead of it, they gyptian foreign minister going to amman, jordan, and then in the last couple of hours, going through a marla to see president bass. and it seems that they are all trying to compare notes ahead of the us, secretary of state arriving to see what they can get from this. there was a call a short time ago from the us, from a senior administration official district, the senior state department official and that persistent questions about what exactly the secretary of state was trying to achieve. we know that he wants humanitarian aid into garza. we know they want to try and find a mechanism to rebuild garza very concerned. certainly the u. s. as is the israelis about any reconstruction material that goes into garza being used to rebuild
6:05 pm
tunnels. but the big question is whether they're going to go beyond that and rebuild some sort of piece process where they're going to actively restart negotiations between the israelis and palestinians. negotiations that haven't been taking place for a very long time. the senior official repeatedly batted away. those questions said the focus is on the si se foss sticking and keeping, making sure the c spa stakes were james, after all the accusations of the u. s. siding with israel in this conflict. how is blinking on his trip being perceived by hamas and the rest of the palestinian side? well, i mean not certainly from hamas that they are the ones that don't get a visit. they all always left out of this. the u. s. does not deal directly with hamas, that's why in fact, some of the other participants are important. for egypt, they were the leading play in brokering the see spot after 11 days of bombardment of garza. and remember that before that the egyptian government was,
6:06 pm
was getting shunned by the biden administration for the 1st 4 months of that had ministration, no call, been placed by president biden, the presidency. it was only just hours before the seas fall that he made that cool . similar position with regard to the palestinians. they actually have not been in touch with the u. s. at a senior level for much longer because remember go back to the trumpet ministration . after the recognition by president trump of jerusalem as israel's capital, that was the end of direct contact between president abbas and any senior figures in the trump administration. so it's now been more than 3 years since they've had direct contact. the jordanians have their own issues that they want to raise when they see secretary blanking. remember that jordan, a very large palestinian population and large protests have been taking place as a result of what's been going on during the 11 days of conflict,
6:07 pm
making the situation very delicate for amman. so lots of key players who have things to say to the us, secretary of state, but the one that will not be speaking to them is hamas. and i don't think the fundamental issue of trying to find a state for the palestinians is going to be addressed either tricky visit from then can indeed dramatic and james phase that from west to ruthless. that's now speak to our white house correspondent can be how it can be imagined. this is being watched very closely in washington. how is it all being regarded that well, what this debate has done is exposed a rift in the democratic party that is going to be difficult for this us president joe biden. essentially what happened as a result of the conflict between israel and the palestinians is that the political landscape in the united states has been altered and is not expected to change any time. soon. for years we saw kind of democrats and republicans,
6:08 pm
essentially singing from the same sheet of music saying that israel had a right to defend itself, but that is not the case any longer. now we have this rift in the party, b, leftist wing of the democratic party. notice progressives are very keen to continue this discussion about the u. s. relationship with israel, namely that there needs to be more recognition in support of palestinian rights. in other words, even though there may be a see fire, the concern for many of these politicians in congress and on the street is the fact that there are still being weapons said by the united states to israel. and so this is the debate that is continuing. it seems to have 2 different motivations, one, but here in the united states, this is being viewed through the lens of racial justice, the black lives matter movement. in fact, b l m did send out a statement of solidarity with palestinians during this conflict. and so there's
6:09 pm
the feeling that the struggle is very similar for not only fighting, get systemic racism here in the united states. but seeing that palestinians enjoy the equal rights and equal measures of security that this administration has promised. so this is something that joe biden is going to have to deal with. but what i can also tell you is the other side. what we've also seen as a rise of the anti semitism and the tax in the united states. so this is a debate that is continuing and expect that this white house will continue to have questions. we're looking ahead to white house press briefing in about an hour's time. our white house correspondent can be hung up there with all the laces from washington d. c. thanks kimberly. while meanwhile, there's been a stabbing attack and occupied east jerusalem. the israeli forces have the attack, has been killed. one soldier has died and another is injured. among con is outside . they must compound in the street for well, there was a stabbing incident not far away from where i'm standing on the bar live road
6:10 pm
outside the national police headquarters to soldiers were stopped by palestinian man. he's ready. police say the palestinian man to stop the soldiers was neutralized so that he was shot dead. it's only adding to the atmosphere and the tension in occupied history. islam in the last 15 minutes or so over clarence, lots of police, cars, grace plus all the vehicles out on the street. but let me show you what that tension looks like in reality. the border guards, the israeli police, that you can just see questioning a man in orange. they've come out of there bought a post by god post rather which is where they normally say they've come out in front of damascus gate. and what they doing right now is searching any palestinian under the age of $45.00. they weren't doing the earlier on in the morning. this is post the incident likely that they're going to be there for more of the day. and it's this kind of thing, palestinians say, is something that makes life incredibly difficult. but clearly israel says, well,
6:11 pm
if they're all stopping incidence taking place, the security of all people is foremost. 8 palestinian israeli men have not been arrested and israel's central city of lid, israeli forces say they were involved in protests and are accused of attacking public and israeli properties. a state of emergency was declared and lid after rising there by palestinian israelis. 48 people have been arrested since the escalation of violence while plenty more heads hear this news our including we look at how argentine is economy is getting was the hospital that struggle with a number of new corona virus cases. find out what me and laws alpha leader on from had to say and have a court appearance since a military crew and, and bought a french team. we'll pull off one of the biggest shops of the european supported ah,

hold our leaders across europe are accusing better routes of hijacking and piracy after the forced landing the passenger jet. they're even going to sanctions after better is compelled, the playing ground in minsk and then arrested a better russian activist. while the aircraft on reach from greece still issue area was in bed, a russian air space. when the pilot was then given a false bond rest and then diverted to men's battery scrambled a jet, but deny is that the ryan airplane was forced to land, saying the crew were merely given recommendations. but islands, foreign minister says the grounding of the irish carrier amounts to state sponsored a v ation piracy. and along with that condemnation, there are demands for the release of journalist rum on protest of it. she was pulled off the plane and arrested the exiled, better rational position due to phenomena, to kind of skies says she fears that his life for brennan has the interception of ryan at flight 4978 is now a full blown international diplomatic crisis. salary,

6:14 pm
me, but nothing to do, but i feel that i didn't find him real, something like that. the incident will dominate the summit of european leaders gathering in brussels later on monday, nato will consider its response when it meets on tuesday. there are demands for yet more sanctions against lucas shanker and his closest officials, as well as call to suspend or transit from galleria. and you look, the shanker is sort of testing the, the tolerance of the you showing that he can get along with, even at the, at the bed grounds of the strange relations with the west and being under sanctions and condemnation. his legitimate, she's not recognized by you literature, she can still make this powerful moves prosecuted his opponents, even those who manage to escape route. alexander lucas shanker has been fellows, president, since 1994,
6:15 pm
a leader described in some quarters as europe's last dictator. the man who has a record of harshly repressing defense is strongly supported by his ally, russia. he's playing his trump card thing that we, together with russia. i against the west against your bunkers and purities. and that's what he's playing, and he is playing this card in order to insure a russian support russian money and russian influence in light of very mild and very appeasing sanctions or grew up in america. it's now and the $125.00 passengers departed from athens and only $121.00. arrived in vilnius, lending credence to reports that protests of which had been followed onto the plane by bella, roost intelligence agents, the middle interception, it looking less and less like an opportunistic act. a more like a planned and coordinated snatch operation. and the dilemma for the west is how to respond to that poll brennan al jazeera. well, let's now speak to alex
6:16 pm
t 12. he is electra and modern european history at queens university, belfast. you joins us from there now. alex, given the amount of sanctions already on better russian officials than president new content himself. is this him being defiant or trying of luck? kid? is he just how far he can push the international community? well, i think his conclusion is that it will be just to another item on the long list of rules he has been doing. and this fall of weights, his personal desire, which looks to me like a personal vendetta against pressik average to go for it. so. so yeah, i think basically he's here things that he here, there's not him you can do to him, which he comes with stand will say, well the air is missing later today. no doubt. this is going to future fairly high on their agenda. what in your mind, their options given that everything they've already put in place since last summer
6:17 pm
has really made very little effect on lucas and seemingly. yes, and i think they recognize is that there is going to limit to the sanctions in terms of changing his behavior. or the money he is a real ball and that's kind of really the dilemma they facing. on the one hand, they have to do something about it. but at the same time, i think it's understood that lucas and whatever you do to him, as long as he enjoys moscow support. he'll stay in paula. but i think there was, there was already a long lead. arrange a sanction being talked to pad before this incident. so i think what they will do now is just simply speed up the introduction and adding as well. so new ones and because particularly are relating to tropic, through and around. beller was which i think will start some sort of signal to, to look at shanker, that he really is getting out of hand. the more of the say things right. you mentioned air traffic restrictions, will nato also meeting this week where presumably not looking at any kind of
6:18 pm
military intervention? so what can they actually do to address this? well i think the mater is gonna issue a strong statement and i think that be because essentially bill or was, is not in itself. it's a computer ball, but roger is, and that's basically is the calculation where we really sit with it with, but i look a shank of that that will not touch him in my in a material way because i'm afraid to in getting brushing walton that as well but yes, those tractions, i mean there are going to very strong american members not strong to be, but still members with strong opinions about it all in the area in particular, which unable to build was which are very pushing for much of functions. and that certainly will agreed more probably for bill or was in terms of and relations with
6:19 pm
made that will be, you know, further detail re the section. do you think lucas shank shot himself in the foot by growing more attention to his regime again after the well to see many launch the become preoccupied with other things? yes, i think i think it's it's, it's not the collect level mover and they're going to long term strategy. and you know, there will be extra function of this because of this, that will be restrictions on some sort of restriction on the traffic around bella was and so forth. i think he had just the pulse carrying, you know, this is he wanted to get that man man and really annoyed him. as your report was saying, they went into quite a lot of trouble in preparing this iteration and carried it out. now that they got him in there where he wanted him, he is, he is not going to release him or worry about this sanctions because you know what you want to do is basic is 10. follow how and detain all his opponents. we could
6:20 pm
get and that's get takes priority over economic prosperity relations where they have been union. well, given that so many of the opposition, including remo toss of it's either in jail or an exile. where do you see the future of the movement? well, i mean don't always had a very big problem magic or potential because of his lack of organization to get hearings and all his protests when they erupt. it last august after the presidential elections were taken many by surprise. that was so many people openly defying. look a certain go well that's why the next next kilogram gentle, which was a gave it was so plain jewel launching was so important in those protests because there was nobody else to organize them. there was no structural organization look in your grade for example. so i'm, that's been suppressed by but look us, you can even village, few people who were around why the prison or an example. and now even the been
6:21 pm
brought to prison from us from abroad. so in terms of, you know, been protest looks unlikely for it is a cbl future that will be any large scale protest in ukraine in bill or was but, but you never know of, you know, those things can just walk out of nowhere and happen, like they get into the in the last year, but was evil future. this is seems to be like it will continue. what saying very closely alex tito that from queens university. belfast. great to get your thoughts here on out there. thanks for being with me. the world is at war against cobra. 19, that's the declaration from the head of the united nations and tony. good terrorist was addressing health ministers from all over the world who took part in a virtual world health assembly. the session is focusing on post pandemic reforms,
6:22 pm
and the head of the world health organization says it's time that global lead is stepped up and make bold decisions to prevent another pandemic from happening again . if we've gone the same old way, we will get the same old result, a world that's unprepared, unsafe and unfair. make no mistake. this will not be the last time the world faces the threat of thunder me. this is the moment for bold ideas, bold commitment, and bold leadership for doing things that have never been done before. well, that's now being ta correspond to join a hole in london, why he's following all of this journal. these 2 men leaving the weldon no doubt that this pandemic is far from over. yes, i mean, certainly the top agenda item here is reform is learning lessons. but on this 1st
6:23 pm
day of a 9 day meeting, both of those men taking the opportunity very much to remind the world the pandemic is still very much alive. that the tools that the world has to end the pandemic. the vaccines are not being equally distributed around the world that it's all very well for the rich countries. teresa head and vaccinate their populations, but a great many poor countries simply are not able to. and so you've got antonio. good terrace, the un secretary general saying the most vulnerable a suffering most. and i fear that his fall from over, as you heard him say that we are at war with a virus, we need the logic and urgency of a war economy to boost our cap capacity to produce the weapons we need. he wants the g 20 to set up a global task force, bringing countries together, pooling their resources and manufacturing capabilities to enormously boost the world's availability and capacity to supply vaccines. and then dr. ted ross, familiar of course, for his briefings, throughout the pandemic, echoing and amplifying that sentiment,
6:24 pm
talking about scandalous inequity in vaccine distribution, perpetuating of the pandemic. he talked about infections in 2021 alone, already exceeding all of those in 2020 deaths in 21 alone, almost as many as all of those in 2020. he wants rich countries to donate the excess vaccine supplies. they have to kovacs the w h o distribution facility. he wants vaccine producers to pledge up to 50 percent of their production this year to kovacs. and he set a new target for the world. he said he wants to vaccinate at least 10 percent of the people in every country by september and 30 percent of the people in every country, by the end of the year. join alongside all of that. what lessons do you think is the w h o? now looking to try to learn from this pandemic. well, as i said, that is the top agenda item discussions about potential reform, better preparedness for what happens next time. specifically looking at the outcome
6:25 pm
of 3 independent investigations that broadly found that the world health organization had acted too slowly inefficiently, that they didn't have the muscularity, the heston independence, it needs to go into countries spontaneously when our breaks appear, rather than waiting for the green light to do so, and the members brought, they had not been ready for this. pandemic, there is talk over the next 9 days of hammering out the sort of bones of a global pandemic treaty to put in stone. some of those things vaccine equality to give the w h a greater half to mandate bird and sharing between countries. but you know, this is a human body, it acts on consensus. there are countries within it who won't like all of those things. so i wouldn't hold your breath for instant action at this meeting alone. so know how they're watching that meeting for from london. thanks so much john. while meanwhile, in argentina, many intensive care units are almost full as the country battles, a new wave of curve in 1900 cases. the country is back on the lockdown,
6:26 pm
and the economy is struggling. daniel, trying to report now from one is ery. we've been here before at the start of the pandemic. it was grim then, but it seems much was now, then there was hope the virus could be contained later, the vaccine to provide salvation that so far hasn't been the case. so you can see, and i'm very aware i'm fully aware these restrictions create difficulties. faced with this reality, there is no choice but to choose the preservation of life. i'm not going to accept this amount of contagion or death as something natural or yes. only essential businesses remain open. school is a close or religious social and sporting events have been suspended or non essential. workers mistake home between 6 in the evening and 6 in the morning sierra to say it or not going back to year or when he's worse because people are

worst of economically. yeah, feeling down. in other words, everything is going backwards, everything backwards, but i mean that, but i think it's good because this way we can control it because the virus won't be controlled. any other way should be more than 9 days. and the may 15 days would be good. the 2nd wave is killing an average of nearly $500.00 people a day, one of the worst per capita rates in the world. another cold, miserable day when a fire is no way to go and nothing to do with the corona virus more virulent than before. and the vaccine slow to arrive, most he reluctantly accept the nother lockdown is the only way to fight the virus. less than 5 percent of people in our container receive both vaccines. meanwhile, more than 90 percent of intensive care, some regions are occupied. health workers are exhausted, the locked down those on and find out 01 cyrus mostella

6:33 pm
biden administration, both biden and his secretary of state, lincoln made very clear that this issue was for them not a priority that they had more important domestic and foreign policy chop challenges they wanted to deal with. and because of the developments of the ground on the ground, they became involved once again. so against that background, i think the priority for the americans now is essentially the pacification of the palestinians to seek to strengthen the palestinian authority. and we can hamas islamic chicago as part of that general strategy. and also i suspect to ask nathan yahoo to tone down israeli provocations that could lead to renewed palestinian protests or worse in the coming days and weeks show. many would argue that it was in the political
6:34 pm
interest of both sides for the fighting to continue. but this, if i was agreed so both sides presumably would have to feel like they actually got something out of the steel and blinking is going to have to navigate that. well again, i think for the americans, the priority at this stage is simply to ensure that it goes back to business as usual, where there aren't particularly strong provocations, you know, just the usual land confiscations and blockade and so on. so that things don't get out of hand again while they focus on other issues like the iranian nuclear agreement. but i think the fundamental challenge for the americans as they have in effect embraced some of the key decisions of the trumpet ministration. like the recognition of jerusalem as israel's capital and the relocation and violation of
6:35 pm
you on security council resolutions of the u. s. embassy from, from tel aviv to jerusalem. at the same time, they've also in line with jared cushions approach stated that the fundamental obstacle to peace in the middle east is the refusal, supposedly, of the arab states to recognise israel rather than israel's refusal to recognize any palestinian rights and against that. they also want to strengthen the palestinian authority and, and weaken those palestinian movements that are in opposition to the core tenets of the american policy. i just outline so it's a real conundrum for the americans and how they intend to square that circle will i think be interesting to watch. well, i'm curious to ask you a little more about that because the u. s. was accused of this flow. sluggish response to the violence of siding with israel. as per the policy you're talking
6:36 pm
about. lincoln's presumably going to have to explain that to the palestinians. how's that like you to go over? well, it's not going to go over well at all, and i, i suspect he's smart enough not to try to explain this to the palestinians, but you know, to simply pretend, you know, this is behind us. let's move forward. but here again, you know, blinkin has made clear and a number of interviews that for him the priority now as humanitarian assistance to the gaza strip and providing it in a way that strengthens a policy authority and weakens hamas and islamic jihad. and i think that you know, it sense this is the revival of the traditional us israeli policy, that this conflict can be resolved with improvements to the quality of palestinian life rather than the quality of palestinian rights. and it's not going to work. and

i think recent weeks have demonstrated very clearly that any such approach as a debt and no n rabbani, that the co editor of generally an online magazine covering the contemporary middle east. thanks so much for joining us and sharing your expertise for the fun out of their mind. thank you. right now, the palestinian group mass is holding a memorial for fighters who are killed in those recent israeli strikes and gaza. you can see that large crowds have gathered to pay tribute to those fighters who are among the $240.00 palestinians killed several top commanders from masters military wing. i'll cut them a believe to be among the dead when it is now speak to human side. she is at that event for us in gaza. can you talk us through just what's happening, this events then? how are you reading the mood there right now? yes. well, i'm here at the playground. this is terry
