money. and this is out. is there a life from joe? so coming up, the support at home, the growing isolation abroad, the complex future of molly's carlita who set to become the new president on the un wants easier. it could be on the verge of the worst famine in decades of violence. antigua regions doesn't stop time to football, the growing cause in brazil, again, holding the corporate america in the middle of a pandemic. ah, we begin in canada where route is escalating over the abuse of indigenous children in residential schools run by the catholic church. now, prime minister justin trudeau is saying church leaders must take responsibility for us or face possible legal action. as long as the remains of $215.00 children were
6:02 am
found at one of the former institutions last month from the $1880.00 s to $996.00 and estimated 850000 children were forcibly taken from their homes as part of an assimilation program brung by the government on the church. many was subjected to abuse and it's believe thousands more all buried as similar sites across the country. now before we have to start taking the catholic church to court, i am very hopeful that religious leaders will understand that this is something they need to participate in and not hide from that forgiveness. and redemption is a path we all are told we should be walking on to our faith. and i am confident that the catholic church is hearing these calls very clearly. and his understanding,
6:03 am
the kind of dismay and grief that many canadians are feeling right now at seeing the continued lack of action groups representing indigenous people or angry over the years of inaction. the chief of the 1st nation that discovered the remains has also called on the church to issue a public apology. in what we do want, we do want an apology, a public apology, not just for us, but for the world who also shared in those packages. holding the catholic church to account, there must never been. there has never been an apology from the roman catholics. danielle morrison is an anesha, not a lawyer, an advocate from the treaty 3 territory of canada. she joined us from winnepeg in manitoba. many thanks for joining us again on al jazeera, we spoke when the bodies were 1st discovered. what do you make of the national
6:04 am
response to the tragedy since both from the government on the church? since those bodies of discovered, the catholic church was responsible for writing more than half of the residential schools. and it's the last church to issue any formal apology. and what i'm, what i've been thinking about a lot lately is all the survivors that i worked with during the independent assessment process and how they were given the option of allowing a church member to attend their hearings. and for a lot of them, it wasn't simply about compensation. it was about hearing the words, we are sorry. then for them that was letting them out on their healing process. and the way forward there has been pressure on the church to release their records in relation to the schools. talk us through what you think those will provide.
6:05 am
the records provide a lot of information about what was happening in the school, who those perpetrators could have been. the fact is that the independent assessment process in the class action lawsuit did not actually hold any perpetrators who were identified as those who inflicted sexual abuse, physical abuse on children. and they are still living today. what these records can help is actually prosecute some of those people and till we actually have that justice will not be served for many of the survivors. your father was in one of these residential schools. what is it that he and people like him would like to see from the catholic church at its bare minimum and its most basic form and apology is necessary? there's no way forward. there's no reconciliation. that's going to happen until an
6:06 am
apology is made, and it's the leaf that they could do. they still haven't paid their shares into the class action lawsuit in terms of compensation towards survivors. they haven't released these archive despite numerous calls from 1st nations, members of parliament. and it was actually one of the $94.00 recommendations from the truth and reconciliation commission. to release those archive it, it belongs to the people and to our survivors, to have access to that information in order for us to have closure. now we've seen some individual bishops apologize for the ro, different dos is played in the residential school system. clearly that is not enough for members of your community. it's, it's not enough. it's. it's simply not enough. the pope needs to make a formal apology. we have waited long enough. and what about the prime minister
6:07 am
justin trudeau? how do you think he's handling the crisis? so fall i mean, i don't think they have a choice, but to take action at this point there's been many calls for several years, several decades to compel the church to release all these archives to ask them to issue a formal apology. there's been members of parliament that have called on the government that, i mean, at some point it just sort of became, well, we tried and we made our best effort and then life went on. i think at this point, given the fact that the world is watching, they really don't have a choice, but to either take legal action or denounce the catholic church up for those who are not so familiar with a story. talk us through from the chat you've had with your father and from the victims of the schools. what is, what is it that they experienced in those residential schools?
6:08 am
to be quite honest. those are not my stories to tell. my father did not share much of his experience and i was sworn to confidentiality. i am an intergenerational survivor. i have my own experiences that i've lived with very life changing for me to work with survivors. but this is a collective pain and trauma. and frankly, i'm tired of having to quit that trauma on display in order for people to believe us. and that's fair enough, daniel morrison, really good to talk to you and thank you for sharing your time. daniel is from be an issue, not a lawyer and an advocate from the tree sheet 3 territory of canada. thousands of millions in the capital. bama coe have shown support for the meta she genta as it faces an international backlash. over the code is the 1st rally backing colonel

i think all the evidence is consistent with the worry, the eritrea in particular is using salvation as a weapon, which is a violation it's. it is a breach of humanitarian law. in the 1980s heretic images like these of starving children, and e t o p, and other parts of africa prompted international outcry. but this time humanitarian groups say the word and the images are not getting out very both restrictions on information. and then a massive campaign to basically question undermine the information which is coming out from the region as well. and this is obviously a very difficult context but to manage her in active to work. and for that they say b, b, o, b, and government. and it's nobel peace prize winning prime minister share some of the blame here at un headquarters in new york. the security council expressed its grave concern about the humanitarian situation in ethiopia. back in april. now some
