11:30 pm
speaking her forces earlier on, obviously this is something that has gone it a great deal of attention. and she was speaking very briefly just explaining what has taken place. and she was in company with israeli security forces that she has now been. she has now been released from the mother laughter dollars for a lot. you better and better, but we're going to speech our poor sarah correspondent who is in occupied east jerusalem. very shortly. the abdul hamid was with you. barbara diary throughout the day and actually she was explaining a little bit, some of the details of what happened prior to her arrest by israeli police confirming that she'd been reporting from a specific live point. she had been delivering her report on
11:31 pm
algebra, algebra as arabic channels. and of course, you saw the footage there, the way in which you've arbitrary was assaulted, arrested by israeli police, but actually was telling us that she managed to be witnesses will also in the area just to to understand a bit more get further verification of, of what to face, and honestly it's been captured on camera hand, but it was many people seem to suggest that it's not clear why. but jerry was approached and that's why in this way, why she was treated this way and no reason has been given for har arrest was she was covering developments in the, in the sharon neighborhood of occupied east jerusalem. and this is really something
11:32 pm
that many chinese reported correspondence has been covering in recent weeks and months. but we saw that attempts to force simply a vic palace and in families from this neighbourhood proved to be something of a flash point attention. but the neighborhood has been pretty much sealed off, so it is difficult to access. in any case you have arbitrary is now been expelled for 15 days. but we've seen tension steadily rising. of the well israeli government policy in this part of eastern slim and just increasing concern about the way in which policy is policy in residence and being treated in, in many ways what happened in occupied east jerusalem. and then also the is ready police actions in the alex on last compound, just at the end of ramadan,
11:33 pm
triggered the cross board of violence. the latest war in gods are of course come out and israel have reached a cease fire. but we see continued tensions and arrests and certainly the developments around check your, i mean, that is a story that will continue. and so we see what really those tensions continuing. but of course, it was really a confluence of different things coming together because we were seeing during the guards. we was seeing protests and march is taking place in the west bank. there was also violence unfolding inside mixed communities mix. if he's in israel, but also what was interesting, want to much was this sort of level of policy and unity and mobilize ation that seem to go beyond social political fragmentation or indeed any kind of
11:34 pm
physical, a territorial divide. and really we see this something that is probably that sense of tension is probably likely to continue because on the issues that go to the heart of this conflict haven't been resolved or properly recognised or approached in any sort of way. and of course, this is the story that reported and corresponded like give arbitrary to cover. but so how do i go, how me joins us now from occupied east jerusalem. now, honda, giovanni has been obviously released from custody and she's been speaking to, she's been speaking about her experience. what do we know, what, what is she been saying? actually, she's just a back there surrounded by people. she came out of that police station, visibly shaken white emotional. she was then work. she is actually still working
11:35 pm
her flag jacket. she said that interview, she was specifically targeted by the, the soldiers who were there. she said, the only thing she did is what a female soldier approach. she told her don't touch me. but she said that at the police station she was treated as a criminal. she was denied. she asked if she could remove her black jacket, which is extremely heavy to carry for such a long time. she was told that she wasn't allowed to remove that. and she said that she was released on condition that condition being she is not allowed nowhere near shafter raw for the next 15 days. now her lawyer said they're going to appeal that decision, but certainly from what she said, she wasn't. she wasn't treated very well during the interrogation. she said, i felt like a common criminal. i hadn't done anything they, i did 5 lives links before. all this had happened,
11:36 pm
they had seen me standing there for the whole afternoon. she says that one of the policemen inside of one of the interrogators told her that actually this was a lesson too old journalist. right. and so you were saying initially when jerry had been detained, you was saying that there was some sort of accusation about they were saying that she had assaulted is ready money. is that right? and then obviously we know that we have this very powerful piece of evidence in the form of this footage which demonstrate to be the opposite of that. that's absolutely right. that was the charge. the video proved otherwise. as she denied that completely, she said that she didn't sold any any told her that she knows better than that
11:37 pm
she was to her and they wanted they were, they knew exactly who she was. and she said she didn't even have time to show her press idea that was in her bag in the car, that she was immediately shoved against the wall and put with these handcuffs. and that immediately dragged the way and taken to the police station. she said that in the car she was, she was man handled. and that continued inside do. she said that she really felt a loss of aggression when they were speaking to her inside of the police. they should have to say when she came out, she did looked a bit phase that she did look a bit clement. there is. if she is coming right now, i'm just going to see if she's going to be giovanna. can you come and speak to us? one minute that it's i will let you know. sorry she's speaking to her family.
11:38 pm
i'm going to just check if you are going to be one second. hi. hi. how are you? good. how are you? i'm fine. so what happened to you? we were standing together. yes. ma'am, then i happened nothing they changed, they just came from everywhere. i don't know why. and they kicked me to the wall. and what is your id? i told him, you know me and you know that we are coming and going in many times and especially today they began to scream. they began, they wanted to hit me. so i just my hands don't hit me. please don't tell me because i was kicked yesterday from the soldiers instead when before that and i would so my back can't hold anymore. so then they said that
11:39 pm
i kicked if female soldiers true at all in the approved otherwise as well. no, they could. they brought me to the investigation a video about just more or less than 6 seconds. my hands is like this to the, to the, to, to, to that soldiers inside. and then they kicked me inside the cart and a very bad way handcuff stuff. they were just making like this, like this, getting them tighter, tighter, inside the car and they were picking me from everywhere. and when i was here, they said in the car they said before that they don't know me. in the car, they began to speak to the leader. we have, we just bought the, the, the post office just the so they know me, they, you know, only the show that i, my journalist inside i was treated like
11:40 pm
a criminal and one of the soldiers came and he told me just they, they lie all the time everything is wrong. i said no, it doesn't lie. they just give the people everything just just as is as it is after 7 or if i was, i don't know how much time because they took from me everything they. if you take the cups from me, they said either at us or 15 days away from us. so i know they said that at the beginning they said that i checked it soldier when they saw all the june and everything was changed. that may maybe she tried to defends herself in 2 minutes the everything was changed because of the video. everything. yes, yes. and then they said okay,
11:41 pm
you will be away from her for 15 days. but no, i think as we will say, we will go to the call because it's because it was a message for all every, all the junior we kicked jazeera, we put, we put knowledge of it and hand. so everybody will be afraid and nobody will cover . no, we will cover everything, goes all the julia. so have you been charged or is it just now released with this condition of not covering shifting iraq for 15 days just for 15 days and maybe later there would be a cost maybe. and for you guys, all that clear message to all journalists. right? yes. it was clear that they out of freight from from it, from all of the june of every, with everybody. everyone was working on the ground, the outfit from him. so it was a message to, to make all the reporters and 10 middleman to be afraid. that was the message and
11:42 pm
you were, i noticed you're still wearing your flak jacket. you've been wearing this book. why didn't you take it off? first of the beginning, they had a few, then was the cuffs i told them to take them so i can take this off if used. so i stayed all the time. even i want to close my eyes because i was so so tired, don't close your eyes, everything and he broke out of it. they don't english, they did speak with me just only in the hebrew and in a very rude way. very, very, very way. so they kept on mistreating you all the way and even though the video showed it to the opposite interest, the gate said, i don't good about everything. the 2nd 2nd show that you were going to kick you are going. so maybe you are going to take, i told the maybe i want to pick more than 50 soldiers want to hit me go. i have to sit down and leave me. i didn't hit anybody i just was raising my hand. please go
11:43 pm
away. that's is, that was it. and i told them i am just, you know, you know me, you know, it was only been for nothing just to make, just afraid. that's all. okay. and they was, you told them that you wanted to show them your press card yet they didn't give you a chance. yes, i just told them i want to call my friend. he's near the car to bring my id. just give me. they said they got no hebrew, you know, in all languages, you know, 5 minutes, you know, at god it's not to work from another word. they refuse to listen. they know out of it. and they know in this but because what they have is what happened. it shows that they was they were, they wanted to make all these things. and my last question you been covering so much, you know, in ocoee but jerusalem and have you noticed lately that media is getting
11:44 pm
more and more targeted as their concerted effort to go after media covering anything it occupied these jerusalem for sure. with those from 2000 until now 21 years. this is the 1st time i see like this, think on the god. every time they want to to you know, little shuttle like this. if i remember what happened and got one big office on the on the menu, sweat from everywhere. so they wanted to just eat us so everybody will afraid it was me of that the out of faith from media do that. so happy you're safe. thank you very much. i get a good read. thank you for the all of our the most important is that you're safe. thank you very much and take off the flak jacket i want. okay,
11:45 pm
there you go. you heard it from you. it was obviously a very difficult and faxing experience for her if you say all are actually despite the past couple of hours, she was saying the way in which she was treated always be the rest. and ne footage that was, she's actually in quite positive. good, very moment, but interesting what she says that sends out a broad, powerful, intimidating message to old john. this is not something that is confined to any one company that actually this, that there has been this shift in the climate and the atmosphere towards journalists recently. yes. actually, i can say that we are, we have actually witnessed the, our selves. there is a bit of a shape is shorter scene journalists over the past few weeks being mishandled. i
11:46 pm
will own cameraman austin, yesterday, was in filming the arrival of these marathon runners. and there was again the military there, and there was a crack that was 10 grenade and he was did him. so thankfully, he is fine. the equipment got broken, but you didn't notice as very is an attempt to intimidate jen and his lately, especially if they're covering occupied east jerusalem. now, if you go to west jerusalem, where they are all to pro death while over there, you won't see any heavy security forces or military present whatsoever. all you do, some traffic police sending. this says to me as difference when it comes to palestinians on the streets, voicing their opinion, no matter how big or small that group of people is a will be a crack out. and also they will be intimidation for journalists to try to keep away
11:47 pm
from that situation. all right, for now thank you very much to meet and occupy the east jerusalem above a trail. and he is the executive director of the international presence issues. and she joined this on skype from vienna, and i know that you saw the footage that we played earlier on you. you are aware of these developments now. we were hearing from giovanni dairy. she has now been released from custody. she's not been charged. there may or may not be a court hearing later on, but she has been expelled from covering developments in the shaft, your neighborhood for the next 15 days. how would you describe what we're seeing happening here? yeah, no, it is. absolutely was absolutely a party was appalling to see the level of violence that was used against the barbara when she was arrested and, and even now of course, i'm very glad that she was relieved. and certainly the pressure that i just was
11:48 pm
able to create contribute this will be released because we know there are many other journalists who have been captain in administrative hampshire for much longer . however, even than just the banner from tom ring k, i n e r. so if this is barbara, i will try to ask you another question. your line cut out just a little bit just but i think you can still hear me. the audio is a little bit fuzzy there, but can i just know? okay, okay, can i just ask you more generally about the way in which is ready as far as he's treat john, unless that a covering protest, flu hearing from all correspondent, how do i bill her?
11:49 pm
me that there has been a more aggressive approach recently. and this is particularly the case for journalists and camera. men who are covering developments in occupied east jerusalem. but in recent years, how would you, what are your concerns in terms of the way in which is ready for you to security forces have treated journalists. yeah, no, i mean of certainly we have seen an escalation of the attacks against a joint list in east jerusalem in the past week. so. and so, so that the type of attack like the one we have experienced, we have seen this evening against you, of ira has become very, very common journalists are being regularly harassed. the fact that there is a clear attempt now recently to control the message to control the and really to create the climate of fear for independent joint. alyssa,
11:50 pm
so this has been an escalation that we have seen. recently, of course, covering the region has not been easy for many years, but the current crisis has generated even greater risks. so it is now unclear whether the packs come out of a decision from the individuals that from, from the israeli forces representatives on the ground to operate there. or there is, you know, there is an order coming from above or even an intention coming from the government of israel to silence independent journalists covering the region. right. so this is obviously an important point. it's not clear if certain decisions have being executed on the ground by security forces, or members of the police themselves, or if there is an official or, or other, and an unofficial policy. but i,
11:51 pm
you would describe it as something that is systematic, which certainly had in the past 2 months had, has become a systematic. we have been observing packs on the ground. we have been monitoring, collecting information about them. and anytime, unfortunately, become extremely common. i think we are, we have now we're looking at over 10 journalists, that in detention in, in e israel. and these are extended per long administrative detention which, you know, the so, so this is unclear why they did, they're being kept there. the donors are being kept in detention, but also many physical attacks and the type of aggression that we see in the video . so it is really actually very great to have the, the video that provides evidence to the type of attacks that you've r i has faced the but didn't the, the level of aggression, the level of violence is really concerning. and it seemed to show, you know,
11:52 pm
what can i hate towards me, the number of hate toward the independent press. barbara chair. funny for now. thank you very much for joining us. appreciate your thoughts on the story. thank you very much. we're now joined by our senior political analyst at marwan shara, and of course my want to hearing from you barbara dany. she was explaining that she was interrogated by israeli police. so she has been obviously released from custody and she hasn't been charged. but the important thing is that she has been expelled from shaft, you're off for the next just over 2 weeks, which means that she won't be able to cover the story. and so how does this sort of treatment impact coverage of, of the actual story the job are, and of course, of the journalist report as a, you know, the, the purpose of them being that well,
11:53 pm
you know, i can't find the words. it's so silly and it's so foolish to think that the distance i have for 2 weeks is going to change. anything i think is, is just trying to climb down the tree. because let's all remember that israel is 2nd to none in the world, in the degree of repression of the palestinians. and at the same time, in its skill in covering it up is that it has a what the court has, but it's not, it has a p r machine that is again, 2nd to none in the world. no other country comes as close to is right in, in the way in the skin. it covers up it's, it's very, very severe repression. denny repression of the finance, which makes the number one enemy for israel is in fact,
11:54 pm
you'll notice you'll notice in the media because that's exactly what's what stands behind it's repression and it's relationship. the only way that this thing does not work is when we cover the story is when we go back to it, when we cover the facts on the ground. distancing a journalist for 2 weeks is not going to change. and because we have a number of journals, i think at this point in time, we have more than a dozen journal discovering your story, we've always had, we always had as just more than any other networks in the world. june is covering it from both sides of the board. there's as where from guys, up in the west bank, from israel, it side saw so forth. so clearly their attempt at silencing our coverage was short sighted. we have been speaking the entire afternoon about how silly this whole attempt is trying to portray as she ran as the aggressor went when the video shows clearly,
11:55 pm
she was aggress. and for me, this whole afternoon could be distilled into one simple image. and that mariam is the image of the microphone. i just, you know, microphone speaking, choose to power and israeli guns and soldiers. so it's really the gun versus the microphone. and clearly within very short time, the microphone was was that was a no brainer. and one, actually the, i mean in many ways people suddenly individual, the various organizations to protect journalists, for example, the committee to protect journalist an official organisation. now this might not come as, as any great surprise to them. it was just a few months ago in may that they called on israeli authorities to ensure that security forces don't com. journalists that are covering protesting of course,
11:56 pm
we know that these demonstrations have been taking place in the middle of april over the eviction of those policy. and families reject your own favor as i was writing settlers. but if i suppose the issue is that this sort of footage sends a powerful message, doesn't it? and if this treatment continues, or if there is a shift into this much more aggressive approach, that it, it, you know, it becomes into terence to, to covering the story. absolutely, and i think that attention silencing intimidating even terrorizing journalist has been to some point for a long time and actually works with certain western media outlets. some of them actually do get intimidated. and we've seen the kind of pressures on western media out this, even in social media conglomerates, the pressure is there. and it's been huge in order to for many of those media
11:57 pm
outlets to cut down on their coverage. and i would especially point to jerusalem, i because you know, the ordering guys was of course severe and that was the tragedy of, of this year. but i think for israel, that's not the main pressure point. it's not garza, it wasn't the war. and guys, despite the terrible casualties, it's jerusalem because for many, many decades. now, of course, israel has been claiming that this is it's united capital that it's a turn the capital just turn at the watch for the, for design or something. but be that as it may, they think that jerusalem is the most sensitive bit for them. so the fact that these things have been happening in judas and the fact that the world now talks about ethnic cleansing, of the palestinian residence citizens in jerusalem. the fact that the entire world now at basically discount reading choose the whole notion of the united capital. that brings is going to be more and more repressive about any coverage of jerusalem
11:58 pm
. because that exposes, they may not want to say that there is a much broader question here about the treatment of janice, particularly patterson and journalist. more generally speak about that conversation continues in a couple of minutes. ah hello, i think you may well say a little taste of windsor for south eastern parts of australia as we go into next week for the time being. it's not too bad, but we got this call from just around the southern ocean, stretching up towards victoria, south australia moving through tasmania. and behind that, that's where we can see the color just setting in as we go on into the early part of next week, they'll be a few showers on that as we make our way through sunday much of a straight font and dry one or 2 on shore showers there to central and northern parts of queensland, but for the most part it does look settled. he comes to a cold front live and that will continue to drive its way further eastwards. we'll
