making sure that everything on the spacecraft is running smoothly and they'll be living on board beach can her, which is the cool module of the space station which itself is only sent into or but 2 months ago. now they've described their main task as setting up house. their colleagues will be said to the space after them and they'll be staying for long distance about 6 months. and really, this space station will mock the continuous presence in space for china. for about 10 years, at least, china has big plans to space president. she didn't pay the chinese communist party, one china to become an international space power into one day, perhaps even dominated the u. s. in terms of it's or an ambition. so china 1st sent a man into space in 2003 and in true 2011 nasa band china from being bold in the international space station. and since then, paging is how the plans, this space station it's or in the can go, which translates as the heavenly palace. well, china admits it's
1:23 pm
a bit late to the space station game. it says it's cutting edge facility will last the international space station or i s s. so how do they compare? well, when completed at $66.00 metric tons, 10 gong will be 80 percent smaller than the i assess. it can only accommodate up to half of the international space station crew. the i assess was built during more than 30 missions over 10 years. china hopes to complete a station within 2 years needing just a dozen missions. base stations will be operating at similar attitudes of around 400 kilometers that the i s s is nearing the end of its lifespan, and it's due to retire in 2020, for potentially leaving the gong as the only space station in orbit. so let's explore this further. we can speak to blame because you, who's the founder of orbital gateway consulting, hong kong bass bass consultants. he joins us now from hong kong, blaine over exciting china throwing itself into the space program. it's be
1:24 pm
tomorrow's been to the moon. but this one closer to home indeed. yeah, and it's just definitely big, big news for trying to have their own long term space station. so the previous to want to take long to they were both designed to be rather shorter term and more sort of technological verification purposes. and so certainly it's a big step forward to be putting a space station into orbit that plans to be there for you know, 10 years or more. and yes, certainly, it's a big moment for the chinese based program. i'm intrigued the jungle will be 80 percent smaller than the international space station. does that mean that it might be able to do as much as you know the whether the those on the i assess that so that it in general. yes. but i would also point out the, the chinese space station is quite a bit more efficient. it's design just because it's a lot newer and they've been able to sort of learn from some of the inefficiencies of the i s s. so just to give one example in the i assess you have the docking area
1:25 pm
and then you have the airlock area. that is, that it's sort of separate from the docking area. and then you have the, the main space station. and on the 10 wall you have the docking area and the airlock are sort of combined into one area. and so it saves quite a lot of space and weight and it just makes it a little bit more efficient. what's a and it's designed to your point, yes, it is considerably smaller and overall, probably less capable the right tell us about the mission and little bits and most of the stuff they going to be doing. so there's a number of different scientific experiments that are on the space station. and it's interesting to know that quite a lot of them are being done with international partners. so there was that interesting document published by the united nations office of outer space affairs, you know, so that sort of outlined all of the different scientific missions that are being done with international partners of the space station. so certainly, i think one of the big motivation that one of the big things that will be happening is this different scientific research. and that will be for things like different technologies in space. also have the impact of space on the human body on human

health, that type of thing. i think the other point that's worth mentioning about this program and about the space station and more specifically is because of national pride element. and to your earlier point, the idea is that potentially in a few years, the i s s e d d commission. we would see china as being the sort of loan that nation to have its own space station in orbit. so that will be a release, significant point of national pride, i think overall, where would you say the chinese space program is heading, whether they want to be so i think to your earlier point, there's definitely a very long term vision of china becoming probably well, potentially the most powerful nation in the world, in terms of space. that being said, i do think that the trainees space program is probably less it is probably western motivated by, by through geo politics than one might think. i think the sort of in the, in a medium to long term. it's more, you know, they have a planet,
1:27 pm
it's very well laid out, well defined plan. and so i don't know to what extent they have no real ambitions to, to overtake the us. so much as they would have ambition to just continuously develop their own space program doing things that are more progressively more complex. oh, fascinating stuff, blaine can say, we appreciate your time. thanks a lot. thank you as well. still ahead here and algebra worthless or weather for you. we look at why thousands of people have flocked to a small south african town hope for better future so close and yet so far away, why some palestinians is struggling to get the id they need. so they can be reunited for the family because poll coming up to at the end of an era, madrid legend says, you know, since the, by the spanish job ah
