more than 7000000 people have registered to vote in the selection, the highest number in a long time. and the say, the poll i'm going to be caught me contest greeks as government ledges, billions of dollars in aid and tax breaks for people who have lost everything and rampant wildfire. new zealand sets out a roadmap to reopen its borders. the chairs, the priority is completing its vaccine. rollouts. ah, hello, we begin and i've got to start and that's where the taliban is edging closer to the capital capital. the arm group is on the verge of capturing yet another city in its sweeping advance. the latest is a city of gas neat, strategically located on the main road between kandahar and capital. if confirmed that would mean the taliban will have taken 10 provincial capitals in the past week alone. yesterday it took polly cool. murray and 5,

abide in the north and far city in the south. all of this is happening, fighting to control kandahar as well as other provincial capital, tara nascar go continues. and earlier a u. s. defense official told the reuters news agency the taliban could surround capital within a month, the president has flown to the governments last northern strongholds. sharp gunny tried to rally troops to defend the city of missouri. sharif. the biggest in northern. i've got a son. we'll go live to mamma, jump zoom in just a moment shortly who's covering a hot piece talks. but 1st, let's cross to rob mcbride, who will give us an update on the latest taliban games. rob, that's right, this is a significant development and a significant game for the taliban. the city gods. me as there's been extensive fighting around this, if you for some days now. and it was always suspected that if another provincial capital was about to fall, then this would probably be that we understand that the town itself. 3 has fallen
10:03 am
to the taliban but there is still fighting around the intelligence compound. 3 but the governor of gas, the itself has actually left the city. so this is a fairly small provincial city. but just as we saw earlier this week with some of these provincial cities to the north, which has fallen to the taliban, it does bring the fighting ever closer to cobble itself. so strategically, it's quite significant. also it does link of course with the south of the country which are the taliban strongholds of kansas and helman. and fighting continues there in kandahar itself and also a neighboring helman province. in alaska, god, the city is still being heavily contested with fighting in and around the police headquarters. that's where a wednesday that was a, an attempt to car bomb attack, hung be apparently packed full of explosive. that was intercepted destination with a number of casualties. meanwhile, to the west of afghanistan,
10:04 am
that has been resumed fighting around head us, that that is the government stronghold to the west of the country. but there is, while reports of by through that the government he had said it's bought off a tax by the taliban using traditional forces, but also the so called uprising forces. these are the militia res, specifically to try to fight off the talent which they said they have done. but now, but increasingly, the map of afghanistan is looking like the afghan archipelago, a series of isolated for to get $4550.00 urban areas still very much in government control, but increasingly isolated from each other. a rob, we see that the gun president has gone to the north of the country to, to rally the troops there. and one of their strongholds. but how is the afghan government planning to respond to all of this? without waiting. just try to see the sort of counter attacks that the government is
10:05 am
promising. i struck god he flew to mazata sharif, ready to meet with local leaders, military command. that's really the way i tried to different resistance. we also saw another figure who's very, quite prominent in afghan politics and also from the star recall perspective. quite important. marshall received them. he is a former vice president of afghanistan and his career. he goes by decades, he was involved in the solve your talk, your patient was also involved in the 1st resistance to the taliban in the ninety's, the very much the stronghold is in the north. and he has been in miss ari sharif also promising to launch a counter attack at selling saying that the taliban, it is easy to get into the north of the country, but very difficult to leave. these are all very fine words, but we're waiting to see just when they are going to be backed up by actually when there is going to be some real sort of counter offensive. but increasingly,

as these provincial capital continue to fall, you do get a sense of the clock continuing to tick for the african government. thank you so much from a bride reporting from campbell. so while that is taking place on the ground and i've gone assigned over in katara, it's day 3 of international talks that are aimed at ending the fighting in afghanistan. and mamma jump room is coming to talks. how much just talk us through the day and what do we expect to see? well, there, you know, you mentioned day 3 of these talks here and don't have officially kicked off just this hour. the meetings have started, they're taking place in that conference hall. you see the hallway just behind my left shoulder short while ago we saw the us special envoy and popular special envoy walking together into those meeting rooms. and there are other various diplomats and delegations that have assembled here. the delegation we have not yet seen appear here. today, at the main venue for these talks, are the delegations for the african government and the delegation for the taliban.
10:07 am
now i spoke with one member of the afghan government delegation, who said that they expect that they will be meeting with these envoys who assembled here in this hall for a meeting at around 2 pm local. today they expect that that meeting will last a little over an hour if so that would replicate the meeting that happened on day one, between the african government delegation and the special envoys who have assembled here. the sense that we're really getting from all the diplomats is that they are extremely concerned about what's going on. and i've kind of some of their trying to come up with some type of joint plan in order to get the situation under control. one of the main pushes here is to try to see that inter african piece dialogue, those talks as it started in doha last september. get back on track. the last time there was a session of those talks was in mid july, they ended without really any momentum gathering for the process to go forward. the diplomats would like to see those piece talk to continue with like to achieve some type of consensus for
10:08 am
a cease fire. but also they're very much aware that at the moment the taller bon really has the upper hand, they have a momentum, they keep taking more and more territory. you're not going to stand. it's really unclear what exactly the taliban is going to be doing today. who exactly, they're going to be meeting with. they've not responded to any press queries thus far this morning, but it is expected that they will be meeting as well with these assembled on boys at some point today. and at some point later in the evening, perhaps we expect some type of a statement as to what to expect next when it comes to this very difficult and delicate diplomacy. that is so much momentum, june reporting from how all the interior minister has sold al jazeera but afghan forces are also trying to secure main highways. large cities and border crossings to slow the taliban. rapid advance charlotte bell as has this exclusive report. the 5 weeks ago general abdul sat murtha quelled, stepped into the roll of it's going to stones interior minister in all he commands

10:26 am
we don't want to do that either. and neither did the experts we talked to. border closures were only ever a temporary measure in order to keep cove it out before a vexing was developed and administered. but just days before the announcement from the prime minister, new zealand is suffered, escape dozens of unvaccinated work is that the country's largest port were allowed onto a ship that had come from australia carrying coven positive crew. all the port workers tested negative, but as exposed a vulnerability in new zealand defense. new zealand has been able to stay cobit free from most of the pandemic because of good management and good luck. but what happened here is a reminder of how quickly things could change. and when combined with a low vaccination rate, how dangerous it could be. just over 17 percent of vaccinated, one of the lowest rates in the developed world. new zealand prime minister says everyone will be offered a vaccine by the end of the year. barbara plumber has or had only had one.
