a new us president took over. a hasty withdraw. would create a vacuum. the terrorists, including ices and al qaeda, would instantly fail. president trump announced an open ended deployment, but eventually signed a deal with the taliban. if they promised to keep out terrorist groups and not attack us troops, a full withdraw. what happened by may of 2021. but then, yet another new us president was sworn in, and president joe biden decided to keep the deal and leave only a small true presence. he said the talent would not immediately take over. he was wrong, sunday and more than $5000.00 troops to hastily evacuate the embassy. now growing questions of what will happen to the women and girls of afghan stamp, 20 years of bloodshed and battles, of promises and unimaginable pain of encouraging signs and set back q decades of

is a complete failure. i spoke to a u. s. veteran an earlier who was scathing about president biden and how he's handled the pull out of troops and so on. and he is not alone. how will tonight's events reflect on president by them politically? how badly as the misjudged? the entire situation is too early to tell clearly his words that the taliban wants, we've been quickly, we're wrong and that was it. frankly, a dumb thing for him to have said, the bigger picture picture impact isn't clear yet. remember, a couple of things. the united states and american voters always care more about domestic policy than foreign policy. secondly, there's so much going on in the united states 3 days from now. when you know the governor of florida or the governor of texas, decide that everyone who has a vaccine must pay a fine or something that will take over the news. so i'm not sure the staying power of this story is clearly another thing that conservative critics of the president will, will hit the draw about the republican base will be upset about. but it's not a,

we don't know yet if it will move on the swing voters. one thing to watch for is that in the last few days, the democratic leadership, the democratic party leadership has pretty supportive a bite. if that begins to change, if you begin to hear influential democrats speaking critically about this at these actions and this decision then by might be in real trouble. it's interesting because today we have been seeing images of the taliban driving off in u. s. humvees taking control of all the african military sophisticated american weapons we're hearing about prison is i still prisoners being set free. how concerned will people be about the threats afghanistan now poses to them to the international community? it's hard to know yet because unless something the united states, the last 20 years, the leadership particular republican party has told americans that everything proposed is a threat that somebody that might happen 10000 miles away and threaten the american

people are kind of tired of hearing that i don't want to blame this on donald trump, but i do want to mention trump for a reason. trump one, the republican primary in 2016 in no small part because he was, he was so outspoken against these us military interventions. joe biden, a democratic president, very much part of the party establishment comes in and continues to withdraw from afghanistan. and that tells me that the american people from both parties are not necessarily agreeing with this view. that everything is a threat and everything must be addressed by us action, and particularly u. s. military action. and as that grows in both parties, the damage of this politically, the biden, may be muted somewhat. a lot of questions about how the u. s. mis judged how quickly the taliban would take over afghanistan. whether this was an intelligence failure, whether they were guessing the rights information from the cia and so on. what do you think of how it went down?
4:18 am
well, another issue here is that, and this is the numbers i'm seeing since 2001 since we started this war about $80000000000.00. we've invested in building the african military. that's an enormous investment. of course, it's been an investment over many years over about 20 years. part of the reason we underestimate how quickly the taliban would take over is because united states and our intelligence ages, in particular, military wanted to believe that our work there had been productive that we had gotten something for $80000000000.00. turns out we didn't. and for me, that is evidence that biden made the right decision. if, after 20 years, we built an african military that could stand up for, you know, a few days against the taliban. then it was time to go because we were accomplishing nothing. and by staying we were just putting off the inevitable, the human rights. i mean, this is a, this is terrible, it's happening. it's terrible for the people there who helped the americans and thought they were going to be taken care of. it's certainly terrible for many women and girls and i'm going to stand and many others. the taliban is not popular in

afghanistan, but to some extent, either the u. s. had to commit to being there forever. or it had to eventually do something like this. and 20 years was long enough to wait. and a lot of american voters feel that way. when you go out and talk to american voters in the next few days, they're going to be talking about vaccines and school by friday. not about this money. thanks for your time. lincoln mitchell, political analysts and scholar at columbia university, saltzman institute, who peace studies. thank you. for your time, thank you for having the books head on al jazeera. i'm in basra, be in greece, where residents of the island are coming to terms with the environmental as well as the economic impact of the worst wildfires. the country i've seen in decades. ah. when a military coup overthrew chili's marxist president, when stadiums became prisoners and the hunters sole objective was absolute control,
