home and their salaries will be resuming and come back to work when we have a system in place. with no extension of the august the 31st deadline, there are mounting concerns for tens of thousands of afghans that want to leave this country. that's all about says they have nothing to fear and that there will be no reprisals against people who have worked with nato foreign organizations or the media in the past. the trusting the taliban on the basis of their words alone is something that many afghans and the international community find it very difficult to do. cha, stratford al jazeera cobble from all from washington, d. c. allen, fisher joins as live now. hello there, allen, the president said he's prepared to adjust that deadline if necessary. what exactly does that look like? well, look, that there's 2 messages here. this one to the american people saying we are doing
2:06 am
what we can to get americans. and those of helped us out of the country as quickly as possible. he points to the fact that they're getting flight so about every 45 minutes that they've removed 70000 people in the last week or so. and he believes he's very much on time to try and get this done by one week today, august the 31st. but there's a hidden message there. and it's to the taliban. anything. look, we can do this if you want all foreign troops out of your country by august 31st. we can do that and we are on schedule to do it. but don't gum us up. don't start causing problems. don't get in a way. don't stop people going to the airport, let us do our job. and so that is the message that joe biden is sending to the taliban. indirectly. his asked the state department and also the pentagon to come up with contingency plans. they will be contingency plans to extend this operation, but he doesn't think that that will be necessary if the taliban doesn't get in the way of what america is doing at the moment. can they do it by august the 31st?
2:07 am
well, there was a briefing on capitol hill in the last couple of hours, and a number of people who are in that briefing it was confidential. chemo not overly optimistic that they will be able to meet that target. joe biden is much more confident he can do that. and of course, remember he doesn't want this to dry gone because every day we're hearing stories from inside cabal inside the airport of people not getting on flights. it's a bad day politically for joe biden. one other thing to remember is that he is very keen to get this done because the deadline of august 31st was set by him himself several months ago when it came under pressure to move it from september. the 11th the 20th anniversary of those attacks in new york. busy washington and the plane crashing and pennsylvania and also element out of that press conference turbine spoke about the threat of isis k. can you tell me a little bit more or tell us a little bit more about these branch of kara group and what exactly washington's
2:08 am
consent? well, again the, there was a message there to the taliban. isis k, i saw k is an offshoot of iso that grew up, of course, during the, when american troops pulled out of iraq. and they have made a bass in afghanistan. but joe biden was saying, here to the taliban, look, you don't like these guys either because there is tension between the 2 groups. they're both. the views of how long should be carried out is completely different. they're not happy that i so is there an essentially they're saying you need to keep an eye on these guys if they start gumming things up as well. if they start attacking american and coalition troops, then there will be a problem and august 31st will not happen. so that was an indirect message to the taliban to say you need to keep the lead on this group. but they're all briefly aware that i saw k is getting some sort of foothold in afghanistan. although if you
2:09 am
listen to what joe biden has said over the last few days, the intelligent assessment that he is getting is that they are not a significant and substantial risk to the united states at the moment. we've also got to remember that job bite and also got an intelligence assessment that said that the afghan army could probably hold the taliban or for somewhere between 12 to 18 months. one other thing this important to point out and gen sac, he said this in the news briefing that she gave in the last few hours is that the numbers of americans that are still in the country is very small. this is all about getting the african allies out of the country as well, and they make up the majority of the 70000 that have come out over the last week or so. and so she understands that there are many people who want to leave afghanistan because they don't want to be there when the taliban really starts exerting control . but she was making it clear. we can get everyone out. we've just got to
2:10 am
concentrate on the skins or allies and i've gone partners after that, she seems to be suggesting, although not explicitly, you've really got to deal with this yourself. we can't get everyone, but the sum up is joe biden, still says, august 31st is the deadline that he's aiming for and he thinks that can be done. and certainly going to be an interesting wake ahead. thank you for that update allen feature there. now let's bring in that page. crowley, a former us assistant secretary of state. he joins us on sky from virginia. hello there, page i, thanks for joining us. what did you make of the president's comments? it appears there are still many unknowns about who will be able to leave. and when i think the next 48 to 72 hours will be critical. if you look back at the last 24 to 36 hours, the united states and its coalition allies have been able to move more than 20000 people from cobble airport out to other destinations. so the limitation right now
2:11 am
is not necessarily, you know, putting bodies on planes. the limitation is 1st and foremost, getting people to the airport, you know, through the various checkpoints. they're there. and then in the case of vulnerable atkins, gain them sufficiently vetted, so they can actually leave the country. so if the united states is able to sustain this current level of effort. yeah, there's a chance that you get, you know, very close to the, the president's goal. and as we just heard, you know, this is the message, itala bon, you know, you have to take you up to facilitate a help facilitate getting people the o 2 from cobble to the airport so that we can, you know, be able to leave on time. i'm glad that you mentioned the afghans civilians because that was my next question. we've been speaking a lot about the us and allied forces. but what about those thousands of afghan civilians have been trying to flee. what is america's decision to keep this
2:12 am
deadline have on them? well, i think there's going to be a combination that, that one getting to the airport getting vetted and getting out is one option and the, and the other will be after the 31st or after the, you know, the nato and us troops depart, you know, can they get to the airport, get her civilian flight, you know, and get somewhere else. you know, this is the challenge and, and you know, from a, from a numerical standpoint, it's very challenging. it's very doable. but only if everything works in the, in the u. s. and allied favor and that, that's, that's where the rubber hits the road. in that the, you know, the, the administration had some reasonable assumptions about how long this would they would have to do this. those assumptions did not prove warranted. they're fighting
2:13 am
from behind. and they may or may not get to the finish line, you know, in a position where they wanted to. you mentioned getting to the airport. president biden has said meeting the deadline, depends on the taliban continuing to cooperate. and yet it's reported closed access to the airport. so what does taliban cooperation actually mean in a practical sense? well, just as we're talking about a minute ago where the united states is sending multiple messages to different parties, i think the tall about may well be doing the same thing. i mean, the taller bonnet, it's interesting to get your ocoee what it considers occupational forces out of afghanistan. so it has every reason to cooperate. you know, particularly if they look beyond august 31st or the final day whenever this, that happens, where they're going to need some level of international assistance to govern. you know, you know, they, they have successfully wage that insurgency,
2:14 am
but actually governing the country is much, much harder. so this will be a test for the taller bon, y'all. can they actually deliver on their promises? you know, and can they build a constructive relationship with the national community? you know, we'll see if that can happen starting here or the next week. we appreciate your insights page. a crowley there, a former us ambassador, sorry, a former us assistant secretary of state. appreciate your time they pay j. you're quite welcome. and we'll have more on the afghanistan story later in the show will bring you the apply to of afghan refugees who's been living in indonesia for more than a decade. ah . hello, thank you for joining in hope you're doing well. we're going to start in mexico
