a moment. we'll go to rob reynolds. let's go to the fact now and get the very latest from washington d. c. so rob that start with this latest reports of a u. s. drone attack. what are we hearing from us officials? well, sammy, the us central command, which has authority and control over that area of the world, including afghanistan as issued a statement saying that there was a what they call an over the horizon on unmanned attack. meaning a drone strike against a vehicle outside the cobble airport. they say they are have high confidence that they struck vehicle, which they identified as belonging to. i saw k fighters and they said that a series of secondary explosions after the vehicle was hit indicated that it
7:03 pm
was carrying a significant amount of bomb material on board. the statement did not say that the statement said there was no indication of civilian casualties. how that squares with the reports from the ground is not known at the moment, but the pentagon says and will continue to to investigate the matter. meanwhile, the us evacuation efforts are winding down. fewer planes are leaving the cobble airport during a 24 hour period. that ended earlier on sunday 2900 people were evacuated, bringing the total number of us citizens and afghans flown out by the united states from afghanistan over the past 2 weeks to about 114. and today is also
7:04 pm
a day that is significant. one sorrowful day for many families in the united states because the remains of the 13 service members who were killed along with many, many afghans in a suicide attack at near the airport last week are returning to the united states. it will be received by president biden. and 1st lady joe biden, in a solemn ceremony. some of the people, 5, at least of the service members who died were 20 years old. ready at the time of their deaths and it can't help but strike one as a cruel twist of fate. that these individuals who were literally babies. when the u . s. began its longest war, were, were faded to become some of the last casualties of the u. s. military engagement in afghanistan. all right,

let's thank rob reynolds. let's go over to charles stratford. he joins us live from cobble, so sold out the situation for us on the ground. is it clear now if that explosion of the house is the same thing as what rob was talking about in terms of the, the pentagon, it drone strikes most savvy, it is far from clear. these claims from sent. com. very specific claims to be fair as well. going into quite some detail about talk of secondary explosions and suicide bombers inside the vehicle, intent on launching an attack. very specific details. they're just supposed to gates. these reports that we've heard from a people living in a neighborhood in that area outside the perimeter of the pool, talking about what they described as a rocket attack at a similar sort of time as well, late this afternoon,

reports of civilian casualties. this is according to certainly taliban spokesmen spoke. speaking to a brother, sister network, i ga just 0 arabic and also speaking to locals in that area but nothing, nothing confirmed. so it does remain very unclear with them. i what it is safe to say though is that we have been expecting some sort of an attack in the last for the, for the last 24 hours or so on the back of those statements by, by the us president last night saying that there was a clear evidence of another attack that was going to be mounted, that was also supported by some status by the taliban as well. warning people to stay well away from the airport. and of course, it comes at the time as this evacuation operation. seriously winds down, we've heard nothing like the number of planes taking off from the apple today. it's
7:07 pm
unclear indeed as to whether any people are whole being put on planes. at this stage, we spoke to a group of people or buses earlier today this morning. they were intent on getting to the airport having so they told us having process the necessary papers, having visas some sort of officially potations, or, or unnecessary foreign possible. they made an attempt to get to the airport, but which turned away to say that's all about a pushed a cordon of around 500 meters. beyond that perimeter, the security seems to be increasingly tight. but interestingly, we have heard no statement from the taliban about these latest claims from the americans that this drone style was launched. and bear in mind that the 1st stroke strike that was launched for 24 hours ago or so the took out was described as these 2 high priority targets with i saw k was condemned by the tyler bar and they said
7:08 pm
that they should have been consulted by the americans, if indeed this 2nd drone strike did happen and it killed these suicide bombers. then, you know, a grave indication that this out about a very much up again state in guaranteeing security around the, the airport and indeed across the country. one could argue, once us and nato forces finally pull out. all right, and that was charles stratford live from campbell for us. the explosion happened as us forces are in the final phase of evacuations, is charles was talking about charlotte bennett has this exclusive report on the situation at campbell airport. the telephone has taken over. the fight is drive us, made humvees laden with us, made weapons around the last us military installation. in afghanistan,

down or louisiana. many fear it could bring damage similar to that of hurricane katrina. exactly 16 years ago. katrina struck the same area generating a storm surge, 6 meters high that devastated new orleans and other cities along the gulf of mexico . will that surge cause more damage than the winds and rain because it caused new orleans levy system to fail, leaving 80 percent of the city under water. katrina became one of the worst natural disasters in american history. if left more than $1800.00 people dead, it costs the state of louisiana more than a $100000000000.00 in damage and left millions of people homeless, nettie, half a 1000000 people left new orleans and never returned or billions of dollars have since been spent to protect the region, new levies have been built with rising sea levels fuel by global warming. there's

widespread concern about how stable the system is. and either is the 1st major storm to put it to the test. fill of our is live for us in new orleans. so fil, how's it looking so fine and see behind you looks a bit windy doesn't, doesn't look like we've reached on a get level, at least yet. not, not, not quite. yeah, i mean, this is really just a taste. this is not the storm proper. we are still hours away, i mean we're still probably about 45 hours away from a storm hitting proper. but i mean, the winds are picking up. sure. what's happening over here. these roof tiles have just started blowing off this building opposite of this is a real problem because this is the kind of stuff that can cause real damage, not just the property, but the people who happen to be outside, which is why everybody is being told to get in doors and to stay indoors. the other thing that's just happened in the last few minutes, but everybody's phones erupt. it with those emergency alerts,
7:23 pm
the ones that you get when there is a huge event happening, that really out screeching sound telling people to get inside and to stay inside because the storm is on the way i say it's about 4 or 5 hours away. currently category for very much expected to become a category 5 winds currently at around about 240 kilometers an hour. that is just 11 kilometers and our shore to be made a category 5 i think give you some contact when katrina made lungful. she was category 3. so either is already way beyond that. katrina later became category 5. and as i say, either is expected to become category 5 as she passed over the gulf of mexico, she went through what's called rapid intensification scientific term. short version is things got very strong, very quickly because the war was this of the gulf of mexico, like pouring patch or gasoline on an open fire. ready ramping it up. the path of the store going over oil rigs that are low to them in the gulf of mexico. that's a huge problem. so the oil production has ceased. obviously while we wait for the storm to pass on,
7:24 pm
it is going to pass to the west of new orleans along the covered bottling. now, katrina passed along the east. the fact that it's going to go along the western side is a big issue, because that means that the city of new orleans gets the eastern wind. those eastern winds are the ones you do not want to be on the. they are the ones that are strong and devastating. i may cause a real issue. the difference between now and katrina is that the flood defenses are much stronger. obviously, i decide to make sure that that never happened again. they spent billions 15000000000 on making it more secure. so the general feeling here is that people should have left new orleans if they could, but it was a voluntary evacuation because they do fail of those flood defense. this should hold up. yes, there will be some flooding, predictably that predicting nowhere near to the extent of what we saw when katrina struck. so those people are under voluntary evacuation. but many others who are under mandatory evacuation just simply haven't left sunny. and that's a bit surprising because then i guess that means not everyone is getting out of

town. now. exactly. i mean, you would think that if people are told you've got to leave, this is a life altering storm. it's been called a monster storm, which is basically another way of saying you need to go because you could die in this. the fact that people are not leaving. there is obviously a very good reason for that. now i can tell you that on my way here, last night, late last night in the early hours, i saw 3 and a half hours worth of traffic on the other side of the road, getting out of new lives, thousands of cars, and still people are staying those people are staying staying for a number of reasons. first of all, they may not have the financial means to leave. secondly, the evacuation centers could be a high risk for co, especially louisiana, which is be slammed by codes. and then of course, there is the risk of losing so many people choosing to stay choosing to whether it out. but it is really an enviable choice to make the risk get from a hurricane or the risk death. hospitalization, because it's very hard choice. let's hope some easier hours away. the people there
