stablished and still wielded in the new south africa. my father died for this. a people empower investigation on al jazeera eunice trailer aboriginal children as young as 10 being arrested and locked up in the group about 6000 american citizens. this has been a massive military, diplomatic and military and undertaking one of the most difficult donations history and extraordinary feet of logistics and coordination under some of the most challenging circumstances. imagine many, many people made this possible. i want to commend our, our standing diplomat, who worked around the clock and around the world to coordinate the operations. the volunteer for duty of the cavalier. they flew to transit countries to help process thousands of afghans down to the united states. they deployed the ports of entry
2:01 am
and american military bases to welcome back dance to the new homes. they stopped the 247 passports here watching overseen by deputy secretary by mckeyan. and they built a list of americans, possibly seeking to leave the canister, and then work to contact every single one of them repeatedly making 55000 and phone calls, sending 33000 emails since august 14. they saw the problem after problem to keep the mission moving forward. they did this because for the thousands, the state department and usa employees who served in afghanistan in the past 20 years. this evacuation operation was very personal. many work hand in hand for years with that can partners many of whom became trusted friends. we also lost church members of our current service community and get it in. we'll never forget helping americans or foreign partners who has been by our side for 20 years. and

afghans at risk at this critical moment was more than just the high stakes, simon for our team. it was a sacred duty. and the world saw how our diplomats rose to the challenge with determination and heart u. s. service members. linkable did her role at work securing the airport, protecting civilians, many nationalities, including tens of thousands of atkins and air, lifting them out there also providing vital support right now. character afghans on military bases in europe, middle east. and here in the united states, we've seen pictures of us service members of the capital airport, cradling baby, comforting families. that's the kind of compassionate courage, men and women in uniform exemplified. they carried out the mission under the constant threat of terrorist violence. in 4 days ago, 11 marines, one navy,
2:03 am
and one soldier were killed by a suicide bomber at the airport gate, as well as scores of atkins. nearly all of them were in their early twenties. just babies or toddlers on september, 11th, 2001. these are a devastating loss for our country. we the state department field and deeply. we have a special bomb with the marines. the 1st person that you see when you visit an american embassy is a marine. they guard our diplomatic initiative. they keep us safe around the world . we couldn't do our jobs without and we will never forget their sacrifice. nor will we forget, but they achieve the most exceptional among us, perform a lifetime work in service, in a short time here on earth. so it was for our sectional brothers and sisters who
2:04 am
died last week. finally, i want to thank our allies and partners. this operation with a global endeavor in every way. many countries stepped up with robots contributions to the air lift, including working by our side of the airport. some are now serving as transit companies allowing evacuation to be registered and processed on the way to their final destination. others have agreed to receive less, can refugees permanently. and we hope more will do so in the days and weeks ahead. were truly grateful for their support. now, u. s. military flight attendant and our troops to depart janice in a new chapter of america's engagement with dana standards begun. it's one in which we will lead with our diplomacy. the military mission is obo and diplomatic mission has begun. so here's our plan for the days and weeks ahead. first,
2:05 am
we built a new team to help lead this new mission. as of today, we suspended our diplomatic presence in capital and transferred our operations to don't. which will soon be formally notified to congress given the uncertain security environment and political situation that can stand. it was the prudent step to take. and let me take this opportunity to thank our outstanding charge, charitable investor, ross wilson, who came out of retirement of january 2020, to lead our embassy and half against him, and has done exceptional courageous work during a highly challenging time for the time being. we will use this posting dog to manage our diplomacy that can span, including consular affairs, administering humanitarian assistance, and working with allies, partners, and regional international stakeholders to coordinate our engagement and messaging to the top of our team. there will be lead by in mcarthur,
2:06 am
who serve as our deputy chiefs mission afghan to stand for this past year. no one's better prepared to do the job. second, we will continue our relentless efforts to help americans foreign nationals and afghans leave afghanistan if they choose. let me talk briefly about the americans remain and again, we made extraordinary efforts to give americans every opportunity to depart the country. in many cases, talking and sometimes walking them into the airport. of those who self identified as americans in afghanistan were considering leaving the country. we've thus far receive confirmation that about 6000 have been evacuated or otherwise departed. this number will likely continue to grow as our outreach and arrivals continue. we believe there are still a small number of americans under 200 and like the closer to 100 who remain in afghanistan and want to lee. we're trying to determine exactly how many we're going
2:07 am
to manifest and calling and texting to our lists. and we'll have more details to share as soon as possible. part of the challenge with fixing a precise number is that there are long time residents who can stand, who have american passports and who are trying to determine whether or not they want to delete many or dual citizen americans with deep roots and extended families that can stand who resided there for many years. for many, it's a painful choice. our commitment to that and to all americans and that against in and everyone in the world continues. the protection of welfare of americans abroad remains the state department's most vital and enduring mission. it's an american ap can stand, tells us that they want to stay for now. and then in a week or a month or a year, they reach out and say, i've changed my mind, we will help them leave. additionally,
2:08 am
we've worked intensely to evacuate and relocate and work alongside us and our particular risk reprisal. we've got many out but many are still there. we will keep working to help our commitment to then has no deadline. 3rd, we will hold the taliban to its flesh, to let people freely, depart. afghanistan. the taliban is committed to anyone with proper documents, leave the country in a safe in order to be managed. they said this privately and publicly, many times. on friday, a senior tell about officially shut it again on television and radio. and i quote, any afghans may leave the country, including those who work for americans if they want and for whatever reason, there may be and quote, more than half the world countries have joined us in insisting that the taliban. let people travel outside afghan stand freely. as of today,
2:09 am
more than 100 countries has said that they expect the taliban to honor travel authorizations by our country. in just a few short hours ago, the united nations security council passed a resolution that enshrined that responsibility. laying the groundwork to hold the taliban accountable if they rename. so the international course on this is strong and it will say strong. we will hold the taliban to their commitment on freedom of movement for foreign nations. visa holders at risk atkins. formal. we will work to secure their safe passage. this morning i met with the foreign ministers of all the g 7 countries, united kingdom, france, germany, canada, italy, japan, as well as cutter turkey, the european union, and the secretary general was needed. we discussed how we will work together to facilitate safe travel out of afghanistan, including bi reopening campbell civilian airport as soon as possible. and we very
2:10 am
much appreciate the efforts of cutter and turkey in particular. to make this happen . this would enable a small number of daily charter flights, which is a key for anyone who wants to depart from afghanistan report. we're also working to identify ways to support americans, legal, permanent residence and ask and to work with us. you know, may choose to depart the overland routes. we have no illusion, and any of this will be easy. or rather, this will be an entirely different phase from the evacuation, just concluded. it will take time to work through a new set of challenges. but we will stay at john best or former bastard. i can't stand who returned to campbell 2 weeks ago to help lead our evacuation efforts of the airport will spearhead our ongoing work across the state department to help american citizens and permanent residents. citizens of allied nation, special immigrant visa applicants, and afghans of high risk. if any of those people wish to depart afghanistan,
2:11 am
deeply grateful for all the john didn't campbell 1st committee and 1st committed commitment to this mission, as well as the extraordinary counsellor officers who were serving by his side fit. we will stay focused on counterterrorism. the taliban has made a commit to prevent terrorist groups from using data stand as a base for external operational threatening united states or allies, including arcade, and the taliban sworn enemy, isis k here too. we will hold them accountable to that. but while we have expectations that tells us that doesn't be, we will rely on the tell them will remain vigilant in monitoring threats ourselves . and will maintain robust counterterrorism capabilities in the region to neutralize those threats. if necessary. as we demonstrated in the past few days by striking items facilitators and even threats and f canister. and as we do in places around the world where we do not have military forces on the ground. let me speak
2:12 am
directly to our engagement with the taliban across these and other issues. we engage with the taliban during the past few weeks to enable our evacuation operations going forward and even gauge with a ton of them. i government goal will be driven by one thing only or vital national interest. if we can work with new african government in a way that helps secure those interests, including the safe return, my free rich. but us citizen has been held hostage in the region since early last year. and in a way to bring the greater stability to the country and region and protects the gains for the past few decades. we will do it. but we will not do it on the basis of trust or fate. every step we will be basing not what to tell about government says, but what it does to live up to its commitment taliban 6 international legitimacy and support our messages. any legitimacy and any support will have to be earned.
2:13 am
the taliban can do that by meeting commitments. and obligations on freedom of travel, respecting the basic rights that the people, including women and minorities, upholding its commitments on counterterrorism. not carrying out reprisal violence against those or to sustain afghans in and forming an inclusive government that can meet the needs reflect the aspirations of the can keep. so we will continue our mandatory assistance to the people of afghanistan. the conflict is taken a terrible toll on the afghan people, millions are internally displaced, millions are facing hunger, even starvation. the cobra, 1910 democrat has also here that can stand hard. united states will continue to support the mandatory and a to the african people consistent with our sanctions on the, on the able not to flow through the government,
2:14 am
but rather through independent organizations such as you and agencies and g o s. and we expect that those efforts will not be impeded on the telephone or anyone else. and so we will continue our broad international diplomacy across all the age and many others. we believe we can accomplish far more and exert far greater leverage when we work in coordination with our allies and parks. over the last 2 weeks, we've had a series of intensive diplomatic engagements with allies and partners to plan and coordinate the way ahead of dentistry. i've met with the find ministers of nato in the g. i spoke in one on one with dozens of my counterparts last week. president biden, with the leaders of the 7 countries and deputy secretary state when the sherman has been convening a group of $20.00 and partners from all regions of the world. every other day going forward will coordinate closely with countries in the region and around the world.
2:15 am
as well as with leading international organizations, embryos and the private sector. our allies in partners share our objectives and are committed to working with us a lot more to say on these matters in the coming days. the main point i want to drive home here today is that americans work in afghans and continues. we have a plan for what's next. we're putting it into action. this moment also demands a reflection. the warning can't stand was a 20 year endeavor. we must learn the lessons and allow those lessons to shape how we think about fundamental questions of national security and foreign policy. we'll lead to future diplomats policy makers, military leaders, service members. we owe that to the american people. but as we do, we will remain relentlessly focused on today and on the future. we'll make sure we're finding every opportunity to make good on our commitment to the people,
2:16 am
including by welcome thousands of them into our communities at the american people have done many times before. with generosity and grace throughout our history. in this way, will honor all those brave men and women from the united states and many other countries who risked or sacrificed their lives as part of this long mission. right up to today. thank well, if you're just joining us, we've been listening to a media briefing by b u. s. secretary of state, anthony lincoln, who has announced that the u. s. has now suspended operations in kabul and transferred its operations to doha. this comes, of course, off to the united states on monday, completed its military withdraw from afghanistan. he went on to make the point that this doha post will be used for diplomacy,
2:17 am
as well as humanitarian assistance. he said less than $200.00 americans. he believed, remain in afghanistan and that they will endeavor to do everything they can to bring these people back to the united states. so just to sum up, we've just been listening to a briefing by the us secretary of state anthony blink. and giving talking to the media that talking about what is going to happen next in terms of the u. s. as mission in afghanistan, the speak to all correspondent rosalind jordan, who is at the us state department who's been listening in to that briefing. what stood up the roseland well, it's pretty much what reporters have been expecting. hearing washington to hear, we knew that the secretary was meeting earlier on monday with his foreign ministry
2:18 am
counterparts in the g 7, as well as the cutter and turkey. he also mentioned again, stilton bird, the nato secretary general also took part in these discussions. the administration had been sending a signal in the last 2 or 3 days that some americans would probably still be inside afghanistan, once the military evacuation operation on august 31st. and what officials had been telling reporters is that these people either may have decided that they wanted to stay, couldn't decide whether they were ready to leave, or perhaps had extended family inside afghanistan and were not prepared to leave them behind. so what we did here from asked a blank and is a commitment to help those people with us, citizenship or travel documents, leave afghanistan when they want. and to reiterate that the, you know,
2:19 am
be holding the tunnel above responsible for keeping its promise that these us citizens will be able to leave the country without interference as important. the terry of state also said that those afghan interpreters who worked with the us military as well as those persons who worked with us based companies or n g o, would also get faith hostage out of the country. now, while we have not seen an actual communicate from this foreign minister ariel from the g 7 members on exactly what steps they're going to take in the days ahead. we also do know now that the u. s. embassy cobble is now going to be headquartered in doha for the foreseeable future, mainly because of what entity blinking called a very dangerous security situation inside afghanistan. so those are
2:20 am
a couple of the big points that came out of his remarks here on monday evening. and washington monday, thanks roslyn. jordan, that for us in washington, we can tend to gabriel elizondo who is also based in washington dc. gabriel. earlier we heard from general frank mckenzie giving us a bit more detail in media briefing about the actual pull out from afghanistan. what with highlights from that well, he said that the official pull out from afghanistan was at a couple international airport, as we all know. he said there were the final 5 u. s. military planes. that left the very last plane, he said, had the military commander on the ground on that plane, as well as the top per us diplomat at the time in afghanistan on that plane as well as soon as that plane took off from the airport. and it was wheels up officially, that was the moment that all us diplomatic and military personnel had officially
2:21 am
left afghanistan completely in did. what was nearly 2 weeks of the biggest evacuation ever undertaken by the u. s. government or the u. s. military, 823000 civilians evacuated from afghanistan in about the last 2 weeks or so including 6000 americans. now he did mention that over a 100 pieces of us military equipment. either hum these planes or of the sort were destroyed by the u. s military right before the us left the airport, but that mckenzie said that any sort of civilian infrastructure at the airport was left in place. because he said, as we heard from blink and as well, they want that they the u. s. thinks that airport needs to be reopened as a civilian airport, as soon as possible, given its importance to the country. he also did say that that you know, that,
2:22 am
that the official final evacuation of all of the people took place actually 12 hours before the last military plains left. and that interesting enough, and this was one of the most interesting parts of what he had to say is while the u . s. was previously bombing the taliban. now the u. s. is complimenting the taliban . mackenzie was very complimentary. that the taliban was very helpful in the final days of securing the perimeter of the airport and helping the us to do the evacuations and ultimately leave afghanistan completely. so interesting comments for mackenzie saying a very complimentary of the role that the taliban played. he did say that the us believes there are about 2000. i saw k fighters that are still in afghanistan now. okay, many thanks for that. gabriel elizondo for us in washington dc. well,
2:23 am
we can head to cobble now and speak to correspondent robin, but bright. so rolled president joe biden, keeping his word withdrawal from afghanistan by the 31st of august. but it's come at quite a cost, doesn't it? yeah, absolutely made. it's just a few hours now before sunrise here. enough gun it's done and people in cobble and gas comes down as a whole will start to be waking up to the new reality for the for the 1st time in 20 years. there are no us soldiers on afghan soil. all of this started to unfold really quite quickly. late monday, going through into tuesday morning. here there's been mounting speculation over the past couple of days or so with the continuing pace of the evacuation flights from the cobble airport about just when the united states would meet the deadline and
2:24 am
would meet its target of getting the last u. s. s. service personnel off the time back, and we started to get reports just off the midnight local time. so it was at the, on the 31st here in afghanistan, the 31st of august that people started to get c internet chapter on social media. also emails the last craft had indeed taken off from the port. it was the leaving afghan space then where it started spread very quickly. and we started to see these as site scenes of jubilation from taliban fighters all across cobble firing off burst of gunfire. celebrate 3 guns into the air. it remains to be see now just what happens next with the taliban government. now it takes control forms and you government takes control initially. the airport itself, the chaotic scenes that we've been seeing that for the past 2 weeks. in theory,
2:25 am
all of that is now over. it's now in the hands of the taliban, but it is pretty much it empty shell. it doesn't have any of the systems that makes an airport work, such as security, such that traffic control, all of that needs to be put into place. and then for the wider seen, the taliban now has a government set to run as it takes control. and there was interesting points that from entity blink and real healthy dose of skepticism, just about the taliban intentions and motivations. moving forward, i'd say. and as we've heard from many world leaders before skeptical about that the taliban given its previous history, that it's, it's going to be judged not so much by words, but by its actions that we've heard. again, the repeated calls that the taliban should be true to its word about giving safe passage to people to leave the country by land borders that it will continue to give the right paperwork. but people who have the right to travel to the united
2:26 am
states, to claim citizenship or to claim the rights right of a boat who worked with the us military or other military's in the past. so it remains to be seen whether the taliban will live up to all of these commitments, but at the blink and last with many other people, many other countries, the international community, other world leaders really focusing now on afghanistan and focusing on the taliban government to live up to its word, robot west. very early in the morning. but has there been any reaction from ordinary afghans on the ground? because as we know, there's been a lot of fear about what, what is going to happen next on the taliban rule. once the americans leave yeah, i mean waves, the initial reaction has been the guns by the celebrations. and you have to bear in
2:27 am
mind that this is the taliban who have taken control very quickly here. who are in some parts of the country. they are the dominant force. they are widely supported by the people, especially down to the south of the country by the past, due community and other parts of afghanistan and most sophisticated, more worldly places. such as such as cobble which is really benefited from having the us and other forces being present here for the past 20 years. and we keep hearing about the large strides that are being made in the rights of women and girls and how that there's been a lot of progress made in the, in civil society here. how all of that is potentially now in jeopardy. or these many people in cobble worried about that. so we haven't, we had seen reaction in as much as we've already heard the fears of people. we've already seen. people basically voting with their feet in storming at the airport.
2:28 am
tried to get inside the airport and try to get any seat on a plane out of here of the hundreds of thousands who are internally the place. many of those thousands trying to make their way to atlanta. both such as with pakistan tried together cross that so we know that there is widespread disenchantment, especially in large urban populations such as cobble populations and people. i will with that deep seated worries and fears that will take an awful lot of convincing by the taliban. that it is safe for them to stay in gas canister that they do have a few checks here in afghanistan. let me, thanks for that role mcbride their 1st live in cobble well, as we mentioned earlier, the un security council adopted a resolution to let people who want to leave afghanistan do so safely. but it's not known if the taliban will go along with this. the u. s hopes the resolution will protect people's rights to leave afghanistan. no matter the reason. consistent with
2:29 am
the right to leave any country including one's own, everybody must be allowed to safely leave afghanistan for whatever reason. when ever they want, by air or by land. this is the utmost, this is of the utmost importance to us. fell ahead on al jazeera, we speak to a senior taliban about what the group hopes to achieve. after organizing its government. schools reopen in mexico, off the been shop for more than a year and a half. some students may never return to the classroom. ah. hello there. we're watching 2 systems that
2:30 am
a weakening in central america on north america. one of those is ida. that's bringing the wet and windy weather to southern states in the us. the other one is nora, and that's made a 2nd land for moving up the west coast of mexico. it is weakening, but the remnants are bringing possible floods to states like sinaloa and sonora. we could see mud slides as those rains for heavy us in the mountainous regions. now those remnants do move up across the us border. we could see some flooding in those south west states in the days to come now was moved further east. where watching ida as we can, moving north across the mississippi and into tennessee, we have seen severe flooding. here we could see more. we got alerts out for possible flash floods. and tornadoes, as the winds are still pretty strong, and it's going to make its way towards that east coast, bringing a lot of the wet weather to the virginia's and eventually on to places like new york. ahead of that, the weather is looking rather fine and dry, but there is going to be.
