5:00 pm
ah me commemorating the worst attacks on the us pauses to remember the victims of the september 11th attacks, nearly 3000 people killed, bearing the scars of the us led war and i've kind of storm we hear from africa and cruise lives changed forever following those the time ah,
5:01 pm
there, i'm the se, hey, this is out of your life and also coming up a new times investigation reveals the u. s. may have mistakenly targeted an aid walker and a drone strike and kind of storm that killed 10 people. and police and israel recapture 4 of the 6 palestinians who escaped from a high security prison on monday. i while the united states is marking 20 years since the worst attack on us soil. and take you to the scene in new york, where as you can see a memorial is taking place at that site. ground 0, where the world trade center's twin towers. one stood, they collapsed after being hit by 2 hijacked passenger jets. there are also ceremonies taking place and chunks will pennsylvania and also at the pentagon, where to on the hijacked planes crashed alegretky
5:02 pm
and my father, edward, joseph papa, dad and families and relatives, there had been leading out the names of their loved ones killed in those attacks 2983 men, women and children lost their line. when the hijacked planes hit the world trade center, the pentagon, i'm not empty fields and shanks will, pennsylvania moments of silence are being observed across the country. in the last 20 years, my family and i have at times known unbearable sorrow and disbelief about the lives that would never be yours. we have fail with speaking out on my daughter's behalf and calling on many more precautions and also for the history to be remembered. not as numbers and a date, but the faces of ordinary people. people who looked a lot like sarah,
5:03 pm
while after 3 hijacked planes crashed into the twin towers and the pentagon, a 4th plain, united airlines flight 93, went down in that field and chunks full pennsylvania. alan fisher is there for us today. alan, we know memorials are taking place that a number of sites now across the country. can you talk us through how they're mocking this moment? that still just for a 2nd didn't reflect on this but 10 o 3 and it's just time 10 o 3 here in chunks. bill is the moment that the plane crushed into the ground at 900 kilometers. i know it was almost upside down and coming in at a very sharp angle that is because the pilot decided to abandon his mission, which was to target the u. s. capital. and the reason he did that was because with the was let's roll the passengers on united flight 93,
5:04 pm
had begun the fight back against what had happened on that plane. and because they had what happened to those 3 other flights at the moment of silence underway on the field shanks bill at the memorial that has been built up at the field. it's no hallowed ground for though is the last that lives in that crash. in a moment we'll hear from george bush who was president on that day. we all remember the pictures of him reading to school children in florida. what he was told is enjoyed by andrew car too, was the chief of staff that a medical was under attack. i'm also here from cobbler, vice president. she will deliver the keynote speech here, shanks, billing, she will talk about the pipe, the event hot on hot and on the united states. they will make reference to get this done. clearly, they can do it. it's what took us into the war the 20 years ago. and of course it's up again, it's done that is really hungry for the bite administration for the last 234 weeks
5:05 pm
or so. we was of the haughty exit. but for the moment, for this moment, for this day, the people here will remember the 33 passengers, the 5 members of crew, the 2 pilots. the last allies went for hijackers, one from lebanon, from saudi arabia to united flight 93 of course, away from its trip from new york to san francisco, and ended the lives of everyone on board here in a remote field in shank, still in pennsylvania island as you say we all that to hear from former president george bush, who lives in the white house when this happened, but who also made the call to go into afghanistan and then a rock. as you say, this 20th anniversary is, would be happening as the u. s. as grappling with the idea that the taliban is back in charge and cobbled, surely, that's also causing everyone another moment for reflection. at the time,
5:06 pm
there were very few voices of dissent against attacking afghanistan to remove all kinds of the asked the taliban to give ups or some of the latin. they refused, and therefore it was almost inevitable that sometime after the attack on the 11th of september, that the american military would move in. the problem that many people have is, there was no clearly defined mission was to rebuild the nation, was it to impose democracy? it up got it, that was it to introduce something that i've got. his dad had debit, expedia and it says 3, which was the united government and someone ruling the country from the heart of the bill. it had never been managed before. and there was no exit strategy, there was no way of getting out there was no telling when the mission had been accomplished. and so many people believe that job bite and did the right thing in killing the trip side of afghan. that more than half of americans have been interviewed and recent polls agree with that. what they can understand. it is why
5:07 pm
it was so hot a so rush, why a medical with with such humiliation over what happened over the last 4 weeks. but they did support the war and they do support the withdraw job bite and the weight of that job bite and will be here at shank still at some point in the next day. he's less lucky is heading. he too will p as respects on the ground. many people believe, as i said before. ready this is with the fight back again, and what george bush called his war on terror. they were passengers voted among themselves to try and take back the call. and with those words, let sure the launch the assault that was ultimately unsuccessful, but created hutto is the 33 members of the passengers on board, the 5 members of stuff and the 2 alan fish there for us in shank full pennsylvania. mocking not memorial that's taking place at the moment.
5:08 pm
well, let's now go to the moral that's still taking place in new york at the sight of ground 0, where the twin towers once stood. whitehouse correspondence, kimberly how good is there? can be, can you talk us through what more to expect this morning? there's been these moments of silence and we've been hearing some music. also a large number of people read out the names of their loved ones who they lost and learn. clearly the focus is very much going on then catherine watching anthony edward gallery, the names of those that were killed here at ground 0 continues to be read. these are moments of file is that are also taking place in the party attending that were 3 democratic president rock obama bill clinton and also the current president joe biden. they had their heads value for each of those moments of silence that have occurred so far. not only the falling or rather when the twin towers were
5:09 pm
struck by the tower as well as the south tower. also, when the pentagon was struck, now we know that joe biden has now left. he is on his way to j. f. k airport, outside of new york city where he is headed to shank, so pennsylvania. but what this ceremony is, marking is the memory of those that were present and lost their lives reflecting pools that the ceremonies are taking place around is where those twin towers actually stood. now they are enormous holes in the ground reflecting for something constructed. but we have to remember that this is the burial ground for many people whose remains were never covered. and so in addition to presidents attending, it's also family members, and it is also the 1st 1st finders. and the reason that these names are being read and given the fact that we're talking about 3000 people,
5:10 pm
it takes hours. the reason they're being read is because for these family members, this is the only time they get to hear these names and to visit the site of some of their loved ones. given the fact that so many remains were not recovered, but instead we're incinerated as the towers collapsed and the ash and the fire ensued. and so this is a very somber moment for president, for the 1st responders that also died. because initially this was thought to be the accident, not an attack, and responders came to the site to assist him to help me. they were killed, the towers collapse. and so this is what is being remembered. they're trying to put a face to these names that are being read out, their brothers, their sisters, their uncles, they're on their grandparents, and many cases their legacy lives on. but they feel it's important to remember. and especially the fact that today is the 20th anniversary of a day, but not only change the families but changed america forever and day. the white
5:11 pm
house correspondent can be health at the for us at ground 0. thanks so much. kimberly. well, it appears that the ceremony, the memorial ceremony at the pentagon has just wrapped up earlier though we had from the us secretary of defense who was attending that moment. we know that you carry pain every day. we know that you bear your losses not just at times of ceremony, but also in ordinary moments of absence in quiet minutes that can seem to stretch on for hours. all of us are here because we remember and i hope knowing that is at least measure of comfort. well, let's now think patty call have cheese out the pentagon just outside washington
5:12 pm
d. c. and there's obviously been another commemoration ceremony that's just taken place that path. he's, we've been saying memorial is taking place in a number of sites across the country. can you talk us through what happened there today? yes, the ceremony is just rap job. you can see those families. some of the families are still milling around their memorial, behind that drain. that is open the family been going there. and you can see there's a flag exactly marking the spot where that plane hit. the pentagon, where a 184 sold lost their live afghanistan and the war there is really hanging over everything. not just at the ceremony, but it's a pentagon. and we've heard of some reference to that. we heard the term in the jo, she's the staff general millie talked about the countries enemies past and present and he mentioned. ready that taliban in that group along with al qaeda and i saw the nazis and communist and fashion. so that was interesting reference. i saw it also the secretary of defense. he talked about against and he talked about the
5:13 pm
circle service members who died as they were doing that hasty retreat, killed to the suicide bombings. he talked about their service not being in vain. and that is really the message that we repeatedly hear from the defense leadership . they're concerned because a lot of people in the course are asking what was the point. and why was 20 years of war conducted only for the u. s. to leave with americans left behind, ask and allies left behind the taliban. not only back in charge, but better equipped with u. s. military equipment. so lots of questions being asked here at the pentagon of what was it floor, why? what was the goal of the war? in afghanistan and wasn't in fact a failure. well, patty, so many of those involved, i believe in foreign policy decisions have suggested actually, but what started out of the counter terrorism operation then became a project around nation building that there was a huge amount of overreach. there is there an engagement with the decision to do that and might that change the way that the u. s. and military establishment
5:14 pm
approaches similar situations in the future? well, i think there's going to be lots of questions about any sort of conflict in the future and what we've heard from the president, you can't get into a war unless you know how you're going to get out. what's the end game? now here at the pentagon at the white house, i've tried to put the spin on it that they were successful because in 20 years there wasn't another terror attack in the country. but at the same time, you have to remember what the focus has been of the us military for the last 20 years. all of that money, all of that energy and building up the afghan government. so it was nation building . now they're trying to sit there trying to say, but look, the goal really was counter terrorism and that was successful. but if you look at what they actually focus on what the money was spent on, it was in propping up an african government that fell to the taliban in $11.00 days . so there are a lot of questions as well about the withdrawal that was so chaotic at the campbell airport. and if you ask questions here at the pentagon,
5:15 pm
they say they are going to do after action reports. but that is the, this is not the time for that. and on september 11th, they usually say this is not the time for that. but these are questions that aren't going away. members of congress are expecting to hold hearings of the coming week to try and get to the bottom of exactly what went wrong. patty, i was reading through some of the reflections of people who are in decision making places of power, i guess during 911 and about the choices they made in the aftermath of that. and there has been some critique about the choice to focus on foreign threats. rather than domestic ones, is that being engaged with their, especially the moment of such division in the united states. not necessarily here at the pentagon, but in the, at the f. b, i homeland security at the white house and it is a growing concerned. let's remember january 6, there was an insurrection at the united states capital, and that is what a lot of people, especially people have power start as they look for 20 years. everything the u. s. federal government isn't focused on word threats. and in many ways,
5:16 pm
during the bush administration, officials are told not to focus about on domestic threats. so now that it seems to be changing, people are saying the biggest enemy is coming from within. let's not forget, there is another rally plan to the capital to protest those who are arrested from january 6 insurrection. so a lot of it's going to take a lot of time because obviously the federal government is a huge, huge, huge organization. but there is now growing focus, the threat the us really faces comes within, not necessarily from without. and at this moment of division calls the unity to call him therefore, outside the pentagon. thanks so much patty. like we been saying, presidents are biding, isn't expected to speak at any of the morals today. but earlier he did post a video calling for americans to we claim that spirit of cooperation and unity that followed 911 use. what makes us who we are, america is best to me. that's the central lesson of september 11th. is
5:17 pm
that at our most vulnerable in the push and follow all that makes us human in the battle for the soul of america? unity is our greatest strength. well, we've also had from former president brock obama, he's paid his respect to the victims and all of those who performed such heroic acts in a statement he said, for michelle and me, the enduring image of that day is not simply falling towers or smoldering wreckage . it's the 5 fighters running up the stairs as others were running down the passengers deciding to storm a cockpit knowing it could be their final act. obama also thanked fast responders and service members saying, $911.00 reminded us how so many americans give of themselves an extraordinary ways . not just in moments of great crisis, but every single day. hello, let's now take you to some live pictures from shanks full pensylvania. as you were hearing from alan fisher earlier,
5:18 pm
that's where the force hijacked plane went down after some very heroic acts that president obama was also referring to. the passengers stormed the cockpit of that hijacked plane and bought the plane down in a field. we do expect vice president comalla harris. she's set to speak. lay says she's going to give the keynote address. and former president george w bush is also expected to speak. you'll recall that he was obviously in the white house when all of this happened. well, $3911.00 attacks lead to a 20 year war and ask alliston as us forces and their allies taught to target al qaeda and the taliban to which was accused of harboring them. but 20 years later, as we've been saying, the taliban is now back in control ousting the afghan government that was propped up by the us. as washington withdrew its forces. tens of thousands of afghans were killed. many lives turned upside down. charles tried to reports now from cobble on people's hopes there for the future. in sell cools,
5:19 pm
homes was destroyed during fighting between us led forces in the tolerable 40 years ago. his brother, one of his songs, was killed. he and his family have lived in this camp for internally displaced people in cobbled and ever since he blames the united states and its allies for the pain. david jord, additional color coming at us in the past 20 years. we've suffered so much that at times with hardly been able to eat for days. all africans have been through terrible hardships, not bombardments, fighting our helen's destroyed the war last, not so long because we are africans, we will fight for our country in central cobble today, totally bon fighters, god form of government buildings and abandoned foreign embassies. the challenges the movement faces after what it describes as victory in a fight for national sovereignty are immense. it's been 20 years since the $911.00 attacks and the soon after us that invasion to hunt down osama bin loud and remove
5:20 pm
the taliban for power. then followed the taliban describe 2 decades of foreign occupation. the foreign forces have gone baton about a back in power. and the un says that afghan is stand is facing a humanitarian, an economic catastrophe. this is the old american embassy. once a hub of c, i, a and military planning, one of the most important centers of was foreign policy in the world. now, it's just an empty shell. hm. it google was 24 when us led coalition forces invaded . he is scared about what the future holds. so look, i look in a moment in the last 20 years, my hopes changed, but now they've been left behind all afghans. so we'll get close the rest of the world when the americans were here. but now we have to wait and see again what the future will bring. despite his doubts,
5:21 pm
he says he wants the world to give the tale by chance. mistletoe taliban oh no, no. all my life experience only war. i just want to sleep with ease. i just want to wake up with no fear. i'm tired of saying good bye to my family as i leave for work . afraid i'll never see them again. this is one of many graveyards on hillside surrounding campbell. here are buried. some of the estimated 50000 afghan civilians killed in the last 20 years. that is our goal says he also wants the international community to accept the taliban. he wants education for his children who are born into war. he wants the chance for them all to start their lives again, just off it al jazeera, cobble. while meanwhile, cattle is foreign minister has been meeting his russian counterpart in moscow. and just a short time ago, he spoke about what the 2 countries are doing to support the african people. mainly
5:22 pm
the focus was on the recent developments and i've got to stun the other and russia as agreeing on the necessity of moving to help and to support the afghan people. and also we see from our prospective that to humanitarian assistance need to be independent from their particular situation over there. while pakistan and national airlines are saying it will restart flights to afghanistan from monday. it says it now has the clearance to operate commercially to and from couple airport. and the airline is saying it's had requests from agencies and journalists, which are encouraging demand when a group of women, meanwhile, have attended a rally organized by the taliban in cobble. they held signs saying women who left afghanistan cannot represent us,
5:23 pm
and we support the atlantic emerald vasquez on the taliban under international pressure to ensure the rights of women. while a new times investigation has now revealed, the u. s. may has mistakenly targeted an aid worker in its last air attack in afghanistan. 10 people including 7 children, were killed in that drone strike that was targeting ice will fight as uncovered back in august. shawl about us has more now from the gun capital. in that joint strike, the pentagon said that it hit i for bombers who were planning an eminent attack on the airport. we know that civilians were killed in that, but now this investigation has, has you. cctv footage has talked to more than a dozen of the target family members and colleagues and found out that he was actually a worker for us aid organization. they also shows that he was loading canisters of water into the car and not explosion. explosives, as the painter gone, had seeds,
5:24 pm
and they are also teaching that there was a secondary explosion, which is what the pentagon used to prove that they knew that they were explosive in the car. the painter calling has responded, saying that we are assisting results of the test drive. we work hard proving civilian casualties and it was based on good intelligence. but for africa and peers, a lot of criticism. and they also find that quite bullets at the last is strike. that happened in this nearly 20 year war killed civilians and other big question marks or whether they had the right person. well, let's bring you some other news now. and israeli police have caught 4 of the 6 palestinians who escaped from a maximum security prison on monday to those still remain at large. the men escaped by tunneling their way out of the gilbert prison in northern israel. that jailbreak prompted a large scale man hunts by the israeli army and law enforcement agencies. one of those 4 prisoners who been recaptured is the courier bady. he was a high profile figure and photography armed wing,
5:25 pm
the alex and mosses brigades. hurry faucet reports now from west teresa and on just where those prisoners were actually found as a carry, as a baby. and mohammad already day was said to have been hiding in a truck parking area, one of them underneath the truck, one of the trucks and specialist units moved in and took them. there were reports of an attempt to, to ward off. and to resist that, that closing in. but no shots were fired and both men were indeed arrested. as you say, is a baby very much. the most high profile of the 6 men disappeared in the small hours of monday morning from gilbert prison. he's the only one who isn't a member of palestinian islamic jihad. he himself being a senior commander in the alex, a martyrs brigade, the factor i'm doing. i think there are 2 interesting things about the details of this recapture. both of these 2 men and similar recapture of 2 of the other
5:26 pm
escapees. a few hours earlier on friday night, again as to the south southern area of nazareth, they all seemed to be very much on their own looking for ways to, to shelter and feed themselves. they were unarmed. so the idea that this was a coordinated assisted escape with some kind of threats to israelis of, of an attack imminent, which is one of the things that was being talked about. that doesn't seem to be the case. it all seems very much on their own. and the fact that it did not end in death, it didn't end in a firefight or any real harm coming to these for recaptured escapees. i think that wards off the immediate threat of, of a bigger di stabilization in terms of the regional security picture. while guineas, new military rulers are under increasing diplomatic pressure, the african union has now suspended the country. after last weekend's crew and delegation from the west african regional brock echo was already held, talks with army leaders,
5:27 pm
and also met with the asteroid president alpha con day. they described their engagement as frank and productive. i'm going to just report now from the going to a capital country. the delegation of the economic community of west african state, arrived with 2 things in mind. to push for a quick return to constitutional order. and to free to post president of a day to do that, they needed to meet this man kind of monday. but we are couple of the 83 year old conduct after our talks, some confessions and guinea strong men left with echoes in till next destination. the headquarters of the guinea special forces. why are they met out for content? we met with the c n r d headed by colonel mama. we had positive exchanges. we also had the opportunity to meet the former president of con day. we also spoke to him because we are mandated by the other heads of state. we're going to make
5:28 pm
a report the 1st contact with guineas coolie to appear to have done well. what we are leaving an impression. he was very often very frank, we had very frank conversation engagement. i said, we will call back what we discussed for public consumption when the delegation didn't achieve, however, was to restore alpha con, due to power immediately or fly him out of guinea as let's the keys in molly. when former president bryan can cater to post by the army. analysts blame, of course, leaders for the constitutional crisis. they've been sleeping for the we use of the organization. instead of really be brought peeve the canon, geez, inside the members. 15 members think they have been really artisans, tough negotiations still lie ahead for both of course, and the cool leaders kind of them. we need some military officers on the intense

pressure, both at home and abroad. the economic community of west africa echoes and the african union are pushing him hard for a quick return to constitutional order. on the domestic front, there are huge expectations for a nation that has gone through difficult times. the next 2 weeks will be followed closely by union and yvette corps and the african union decided to sanctions their plight. could washing committee. reese, would you see it? i don't agree. i'll still ahead here on out there and protest is on giving up. the 5 to thailand. prime minister, prime minister survives a 3rd no confidence fors, gaps and their schooling. we take a look at south africa struggle to fill classrooms during this corona virus pandemic. ah
5:30 pm
hello, thank you for joining in. we've still got a slight shamal impacting areas of the middle east. so through q 8, the ne, of saudi into cats are, were seen that sand and dust kicked up. but i want to take you to pakistan a lot going on. these clouds here has unleashed just heavy amounts of rain for the horse. i want to take you right down to the ground and we saw flooded out roads. here was enough to also disrupt transport services. and still more to come on sunday, pretty much stretching from the hor to lama bod rate through to the border with are gone. it's done, but further toward the south, it's settled karate at $35.00 degrees and we're going to crank up your temperature up to $41.00 on wednesday with an abundance of sunshine. pretty average temperatures. however, for turkey is stumble at $26.00. okay, maybe a degree or 2 above where you should be through the tropics of africa. some pretty good rain falling through the democratic republic of the congo.
