oh, the, the hello that you're watching al jazeera. let's remind you about a story and a group of political parties and to nivia is forming a coalition to oppose the president. the group says, can you say it has lost his legitimacy and accuses him of carrying out to prove well health organization chief, kendra, every s has apologized after alleged sexual abuse by stop in democratic republic. an independent panel found at least a few cases of sexual abuse by age workers during the above the outbreak from 2018 . and right now, the top us military officials are testifying before the senate committee about the withdrawal of troops from afghanistan and on the collapse of the afghan government . the biden administration has been widely accused of being unprepared for the fall of couple. while the chairman of the joint chiefs of staff mock,

millie said the taliban takeover means a greater risk of attacks against the united states. but we must continue to protect united states of america and its people from terrorist attacks coming from afghanistan, reconstituted al qaeda or isis with aspirations to attack the united states is a very real possibility. and those conditions do include activity in and govern spaces, could present themselves in the next 12, the 36 months. that mission will be much harder now, but not impossible. and we will continue to protect the american people. now, canada, the catholic church has pledged $30000000.00 to help survive as of the residential schools that operated until the 1900 ninety's school. like this one in british columbia separated indigenous children from their parents. catholic bishops have apologized after the discovery of more than 1000 unmarked graves of children near

their science. well, let's speak to britain were less. he's a lawyer and a former counsel for the national inquiry into missing another indigenous women and girls. he joins us now from vancouver green. thanks for joining us again on al jazeera. i'll start by asking you for your reaction to this $30000000.00. do you feel it's enough for or needs to stop? i think it's is it, it is puzzling actually because the catholic church has been involved in the indian residential school settlement process in the past and they failed up to fail to live up to promises previously. so i'm viewing this with a lot of caution. a lot of skepticism and i'm not the only indigenous person that is. i know that a number of indigenous leaders across the country has exercised serious doubts and
9:33 pm
concerns about the way the apology was framed. and also the specifics of the apology. the specifics of the promise and some of the, some of the places where it seems to fall short. i'm brain. i was looking at some of the numbers here because as you say, this isn't the 1st time the church has pledged money. so it was back in 2005, the indian residential school settlement agreement. that was meant to raise $25000000.00 in the end. something like, just for 1000000 with paid out. is there a way to ensure more accountability this time round in terms of actually distributing the 30000000? well, i think the 30000000 that's been promised by the canadian conference of catholic bishops has specifically been said to be earmarked for local level reconciliation projects, which is not what the original $25000000.00 of the settlement was intended been. the original settlement was intended to be fatal to survivors of abuse residential
9:34 pm
schools. so the 30000000 is completely missing the mark in that regard. i think that my cell phone, a number of other indigenous people want to see a commitment from the catholic church to meet its original commitment on top of this 30000000 dollars. they should be ensuring that the residential school survivors receive the settlement that they need. so they can get some of the personal supports in place for the trauma that they continue to live and re live. well, as we've been saying bri, and there was this apology as well, that was issued i believe on friday. do you feel that's enough accountability for the communities here? what would you like to see? well, i know that a number of, of indigenous leaders have said that the apology is both unclear and insufficient. it refers to quote, some members of the catholic community and quote. so this ignores the roman
9:35 pm
catholic church as role as an institution in the residential school system. the apology makes no promise to create a single access point to identify missing children and those burried and unmarked and mass graves. so that's something that really needs to happen to ensure that families get closure. and the number of indigenous leaders have said that the pope should come to canada to make a formal apology on behalf of the catholic church and as an indigenous person. i agree with all of these criticisms, but i also strongly believe that canada, the federal government, has failed to seek criminal accountability for perpetrators of residential school abuses. and this failure of canada to pursue justice through the criminal courts. weighs very heavily on many residential school survivors and their families. well, let me ask you more about that being because you yourself were personally involved in the national inquiry into missing and murdered indigenous women and girls that
9:36 pm
you left i believe because of concerns around federal interference. and that was 3 years ago. do you feel that the political climate hasn't changed when it comes to addressing these past abuses? no, i don't think that the climate has changed at all in 2005 as part of the of truth and reconciliation and to determine how to settle claims by residential school survivors. candidates federal government hired private investigators to identify alleged abusers and by 2013, they had identified over 5300 different abusers. but the government has never brought criminal charges against any of them. and part of that, i believe is that the canadian government is complicit in the genocide. that was residential schools. and if it complicit in the ongoing constitutional apartheid canada operates under. and the fact that the attorney general refuses to bring
9:37 pm
about a special prosecutor to investigate residential schools and to investigate other acts of genocide and apartheid in canada. in my mind is another indication that the canadian government is attempting to limit its culpability. and the fact that the attorney general has to grant consent to bring these types of investigations shows that the government is in a conflict of interest. why would the attorney general ever started investigation that could lead down a road of implicating the attorney general and the federal cabinet? i don't think it would happen for you. well, that's the lawyer and a former counsel for the national inquiry into missing and leaded indigenous women and girls speaking to us from vancouver. thanks for joining us again. bring great to get your thoughts. thank you. now spain has declared the island of la palmer, a disaster zone, due to a continued volcanic eruption that the comb,
9:38 pm
ravia volcano displaced nearly 7000 people since last week and their affairs the lava could then reach the sea releasing toxic gases. well, let's talk horsepower. nicholas hockey is on the ground for us in the palmer nic. it feels like this or option has been a little relentless. do we have a sense yet of when the law might actually reach the ocean? well, it does definitely feel relentless and there was a law a few days ago when we last book, look at it. now, i'm going to just step out of a shot so you can have a better look of what's going on. on the one side, you see this fountain of love like a dragon's tongue flowing up into the air. with that love just flowing down that slope, edging closely, but surely towards the ocean. for birds i view, it's only it's 32800 meters away from the ocean. but it has this
9:39 pm
flat surface to go through and that has slow down the flow of lava. but look at the force of the magnet coming out of the of this crater that seems to be cracking above it. you still have that a few said gas blowing up into the air and was the airport is open. all commercial flights are grounded now. the fear is, is the wind. in the next couple of days. we're going to see a change in direction in which the wind is blowing. it's going to go south words, and it's going to affect the neighboring islands, arrow, and other arm and nearby. and it will also affect areas where there are more people inhabiting, and that's, that's one thing that is worrying the vulcan ologist and the authorities here is the direction which it is blowing in the unpredictability of volcano. that's the next. so many people, as we've been reporting off their homes, they're plantations,
9:40 pm
they livelihood. where will they go now? is there a plan to resettle them? well there isn't now a national disaster plan where there's been 10000000 allocated by the islands of canary and another 10000000 euros by madrid. wherever were on the edge of europe. this island fields far removed both murdered, even for even further removed from brussels in brussels. has promised that there will be some help countering coming, but it has yet to come. and what we're seeing is people that are in shock, in what has happened just 2 weeks. they've seen their homes disappear by this tongue of lava. they've seen their livelihood disappear and walter, this is spectacular. seen. it is also a sight of pilgrimage sights of mourning. of all those homes lives, memories that have been suddenly lost unleashed by this force of nature. of course there has been this volcanic eruption expected,
9:41 pm
but listen to it now. rumbling people who sleep here at night cannot close their eyes. they're having difficulty to reassure their children. it is a community and trauma and faith of this changing landscape. and this ever so more powerful volcano, on the scale from 0 to 8. well, can all just give it 3, they call it a strong bullion type over option. but make no mistake. it is a volcanic eruption that is causing destruction, damages and walls, and no one has lost their lives. they have lost their livelihoods and their way of live. people wonder is there any relation between climate change and what's happening right now? there's no clarity whether or not this has happened, but you have to, you have to remember that this is a natural phenomenon, and there'll be some sort of rebalance from these volcanoes. the flow of love that is heading towards the ocean of all the oceans that we have on planet earth come from these volcanic flow essential part of the planet. and maybe what we're seeing
9:42 pm
right now is a re balance of as a result of all the c o 2 emission that has resulted on the on, on the surface of the earth. but meanwhile, the short run, it's affecting people's life. misses hack they're on the ground for us. and paula, thank you so much. thank. now china is showing off some of its most advanced aircraft technology and weaponry at its biggest asha. and it's also being held as rivalry with the u. s. and other western countries intensifies or above them. you reports the shows surely the pool to the air and it's a technology going i think everyone cares most about a 20 bomber but not here. maybe we'll have to wait for him few more years. other than that, it's the j twin fighter j 10 i. j. 20 still pointers are among the highlights. so this says show into high city

when we are under pressure from powers who harden their approaches, reacting and showing that we to have power and the capacity to defend ourselves does not mean giving way to escalation means making ourselves respected. we must admit that for more than 10 years us focus is lost on itself and has strategic interest. that of pivoting towards china and the pacific is micro regards the aka steel. as a wakeup call for europeans, athens clearly agrees the us and u. k. had also bid to build war ships for grief, but mid so talk is said frances vessels were chosen not only for their technology, but to support an alloy and european interests. natasha butler, i'll jazeera paris. now air pollution has been smothering bangladesh for years, causing death as well as damaging the environment and the economy. time to have reports now from deca that's been rang the world's 2nd most polluted capital city
