right now you can be part of those conversations, spouse this to you are now to sierra m be the hero, the world needs a washer. ah . ready ready let me put in, says russia is ready to boast, gas deliveries to europe as energy prices surge. ah, i know about this, and this is all the 0 live from doha. also coming up, the u. s. president demands its largest port ones. 247 has price is a forced up by supply chain log jam. i'm fighters into good,
2:01 am
i say they're facing an intensifying ground. an air offensive by ethiopia is military and so i'll try back to william shatner heads towards the final frontier and becomes the oldest person to fly into space. ah, president vladimir putin is denying russia is behind an energy shortage in europe saying moscow standing by to help prizes for natural gas have skyrocketed be use as people are going to need help. as winter approaches natasha battle has more from brussels, reducing taxes on energy bills and financial help for poor households were among the recommendations laid out by europe's energy commissioner to help member states shield consumers across the block from spiraling costs. our immediate priority is
2:02 am
to protect europe's consumers, especially the most vulnerable. second, we have to make our inches is them better prepared and more resilient? so that we don't have to face a similar situation in the future. natural gas prices have soared in europe in recent weeks, partly driven by a certain demand, as countries emerge from locked downs, natural gas accounts for a quarter of the european union's energy needs. the majority of that is imported into the block from countries including how jerry, a norway and qatar, but mainly russia. some say that the kremlin is fueling the price rise by failing to boost gas supplies in order to pressure the you to prove the controversial nod stream to pipeline. at an energy conference in moscow though, prison vladimir putin said russia was ready to increase supply electron last bush, really to do sure. if they ask us to increase deliveries,
2:03 am
we're ready to do so literally, we are increasing them as much as our partners are asking us to avoid future energy crises. the u commissioner says countries must focus on transitioning away from fossil fuels to renewables. some analysts say that would also help your become more self reliant when it comes to energy. if we had had in europe the national government that did 20 years ago, renovate the homes, like we knew how to do that, didn't roll out solar heating systems as soon as the seventy's, because this is super haul technology, we would be in a much better situation. today would be consuming much less gas. we will be much less reliance on russia. and the current gas prices that we see would have been, you know, fall as impactful for us europeans. some european countries, including from spain, agrees one more from the youth and recommendations. they are pushing for e u wide measures, including coordinating gas purchases and joint gas storage. the blogs leaders will
2:04 am
discuss the crisis at a summit. next week with the onset of winter pressure is mounting to find solutions . natasha butler, i'll just sarah brussels. meanwhile, the fears of the u. k. might start running out of food because of a log jam of shipping containers. the country's largest commercial port, feeling still in england handles about 36 percent of the countries in ports. but there aren't enough lot of drivers to transport the goods and some companies having to move shipping to other ports. because economy struggling supplies of food and fuel are running low. the us government stepping up efforts to fix global supply chain issues which have led to shortages many goods and higher prices reduced factory output over the past 18 months. and shipping log jams are being blamed for our slowing already fractured economy. our white house correspondent, kimberly hawker reports from washington d. c. each year, almost half of all us imports arrived here at the port of los angeles. but right
2:05 am
now, dozens of ships are stuck off the coast, waiting to dock and unload. that backlog has led to a shortage of goods and higher prices for you as consumers. you're hearing a lot about something called supply change and how hard it is to get a range of things from a toast to, to sneakers, to bicycles, her bedroom furniture. that's why on wednesday, u. s. president joe biden held a virtual round table with c e o. 's from companies like federal express, u. p. s, and wal mart. to address the challenges, the companies all agreed to increase their overnight and off peak hours. the white house is also brokerage in agreement to expand, working hours at the port of los angeles, making it a 24 hour day, 7 day, a week operation. their commitment to go all in on 247 operations meas,

at businesses of all sizes, will get their goods on shelves, faster and more reliable. when the global pandemic shut america's economy down, demand for goods went up, store shelves across the us, grew bare. but as the economy opens up, the problems persisted. america's supply chains can't keep up with demand. labor shortages have compounded the problem and fewer workers, stock store shelves, as the holiday season approaches. the white house has been under pressure to resolve the supply chain issues hampering america's economic recovery. some analysts believe wednesday's announcement won't be enough. it's a huge logistic nightmare, and a lot of it is overseas and therefore, you know what the president's doing. it isn't going to really hurt, but at the end of the day, it doesn't solve the problem. present abide and says investments in infrastructure would help ease some of the supply chain issues. that's why he's urging the u. s.
2:07 am
congress to pass his infrastructure plan to create jobs and to ensure the united states remains resilient to future economic shocks. kimberly held it al jazeera, the white house. tim was joining us live from westchester in pennsylvania. he's an associate director at moody's analytics is good to have you with us here on al jazeera. we just heard in kimberly's report there, steven ritual and the economist saying that he was skeptical that any of the moves the president was putting forward would actually have a long term impact. how do you feel about that? yeah, i covered sentiment. i think the, you know, this is a step in the right direction. what president biden has done with, with the task force today, i think is certainly an improvement. and certainly a much needed step given how congested the ports of l. a in long beach has been for context, you know, those 2 ports a low and represent 40 percent of total container traffic that goes into the united
2:08 am
states and they're at their most congested historically. so i think what he did was really to provide, you know, sort of much needed temporary relief as well as really try to alleviate the flow of containers going into and out of the united states. do you think that we've misunderstood or failed to understand the significance of supply chains around the world and it's taken something like this to show us the fractures in the system. yeah, it's a great point. i think, i think something that we've taken for granted is that, you know, given the globalize nature of supply chains, there are various links to this chain, right? so ports are only 11 link in a very long chain that includes trucks, warehouses, you know, ships and railway as well. and so, you know, sort of going back to your earlier point, i think fixing the current situation. it's only going to be fixing sort of the link
2:09 am
one link in that long chain. the truck drivers shortage isn't going away. there's some secular trends behind why that has been such a persistent and perhaps growing problem. issues with warehouses are also have also been aggravated by sort of increased demand due to, you know, e commerce sort of really booming during the pandemic. and rails are also sort of encountering the same labor issues that the poor, tough. and so the combination of all these bottlenecks at every single link in that chain basically makes this the situation very challenging to solve. and what the, what the president has done is it's to try to temporarily unblock one of the key sort of links in that chain. but there is so much more work that needs to be done. we have to abide and talking about how hard it was to get quote, a range of things from a toaster to sneakers, to a bicycle, to bedroom furniture. these are not essential items. why is it so important that
2:10 am
items like this, as opposed to food? an oil, for example, get through the ethanol mac system? well, i think the president's goal really is to try to get all kinds of items, right? regardless of whether it's food or sneakers sort of moving, right. i think, you know, when, when he, when he plans to basically increase increase supply chain resilience. and as he's sort of committed to do, you know, after his sort of 100 day initiative to really sort of check on supply chains in general. and he's identified certain key areas, some of which you've mentioned right. energy. i think there's a huge drive to have greater energy resilience here in the united states. and similarly in other parts of the world. semiconductors, it's another sort of key talking point. it's sort of the new oil rated kind of is
2:11 am
what drives the modern digital economy. so there's again, sort of effort being made to make the local economy more resilient, and this is again happening worldwide. so i don't think that the president is necessarily distinguishing between the types of goods that he wants to, to, to sort of get through the ports. but what he is doing is he is making a push to make sure that there is resilience in key and key goods and services like you mentioned, fuel semiconductors. to make sure that you know, these sort of supply chain disruptions continue, that the country would not be incapacitated as a result. really good to get your thoughts on this, tim we, we appreciate you being with us and i'll just, you know, thank you very much indeed. thank you for having me and i'm, i'm here to bow and arrow to kill 5 people and injure several others in norway and happened in the town of kong. spoke southwest of the capital. also, a suspect has been arrested. police are investigating whether the attack was an act
