the wind over top stories this guns intrusive, crossed into democratic republic of congo as part of a coordinated operation to combat the army group known as the allied democratic forces. it comes weeks after 3 suicide bomber taxi compiler killed several people. the secretary of state warner, russia, that any aggression in ukraine will take a serious consequences. anthony blanking is attending a meeting of natal foreign ministers to discuss rushes, build up a troops and ukraine's border security forces of fog tear gas at and t military protesters in sit down outside the presidential palace and called to me many ones last week to deal with the military scrapped and so i've got a honda reinstated, as prime minister of foreign commentator in front says and as he will run and next year's presidential elections and exam orders known for his hard line anti immigration views. and his attacks on islam is facing charges of insipid,

to have racial hatred. after making comments about unaccompanied child migrants showing a broadcast, it was convicted and find a similar charges in 2011. if you mean is a freelance journalist based in paris and he says it was presidential campaign, did not come as a surprise to many in france is more is not really presented any real policy. it's been appealing to people's emotion, very populous message. he is looking to take away, as i said earlier, the votes that would normally go to maureen le pen and, and we haven't really heard any kind of long term policies. certainly economic policies, international relations policies. we just heard about what he is against them or is certainly posing a major threat to the le pen dynasty that as you say, has been around for so many years. if not decades. marilla, penn, let's not forget came in relatively comfortable 2nd position in the
9:32 pm
1st round last time around 5 years ago. and in the, in the face off was comfortably defeated by emanuel macro on the current president who is still the favorite for next year's presidential election. so i think he is more is likely to split the vote amongst those that are more in tend to vote in the more extreme right wing, which is a substantial number. if you add up the opinion polls between le pen and the more where it turn 2223 percent on average over the past are over the past few weeks. i mean, that's approaching a quarter all the people that have been asked anyway. as to their voting intentions, josephine baker, the american born singer dancer, and french resistance activists, has been conferred, frances highest honor, 36 years after her death. she's been symbolically laid to rest in the pantheon mausoleum, alongside other french national icons, including philosopher voltaire, the physicist, molecule, underwriter,
9:33 pm
victor hugo. she's the 1st black woman to be so honored to or mark back for a journalist and researcher who studied and written about josephine baker is joining us now from washington. d. c. it's very good. have you with us on al jazeera, i've just been looking for a precis of her life, and it really is extraordinary. i would recommend anybody who does know about it, go online and find this out. it's difficult to know where to to start. why is it taken so long? do you think for her to receive this accolade from friends? i thanks for having me. it's a pleasure to be here on. i guess it depends on who you ask why it's taken so long . there's been a sustained effort recently, and it was a subject of one of my stories about how josephine baker's legacy should be preserved. and i think as a number of things, why is probably taken this long arm she has been recognized by france before, after her efforts in the 2nd world war, a spine for the resistance. she was given some honors by charles de gaulle. but i
9:34 pm
think that dis, latest honors, probably a recognition and of her work and sustained effort by people who supported her a couple years ago. all in one might or where she had her 1st caberry after she moved from the us. the piracy government honored her with our plaque and i think that this is just the latest of those efforts. i was just wondering, given the circumstances that she grew up in and the achievements that she managed, do you think that that was a testament to determination in josephine baker all was she driven by circumstances? do you think that's a very good question. if you look at josephine baker's life, oh, it's remarkable what she was able to achieve. oh, you know, she grew up in poverty in st. louis i, you know, but then she used her talents. she performed on broadway. then you know, as someone spotted her eye performing on broadway,
9:35 pm
brought her to paris and her star just ruins from there. i think it's i determination in her life. i unique drive that she had to, you know, regardless of what the circumstances were, that she would try and surmount those circumstances. so, you know, in addition to being a performer and an actress and a business owner, you know, she was a spy, you know, as she fought for civil rights in the u. s. in latin america. i'm so i think it was just as singular drive within her on that, you know, helped her to achieve all of these things. and as you said, i would encourage anyone who doesn't know about her story to go online and read up on her life. it's pretty remarkable and the focus, if i understand it, is on her embodiment of the french spirit. that was one of the reasons why she was put forward, particularly by an annual knock on the president ab, to be in touch in the pantheon. how do you think the ceremony is going to be received by black people in france and around the world?
9:36 pm
i think that, oh, this is an opportunity for black people in france and around the world to, you know, learn about her life. and i think that they receive it very well. um, she is well loved by folks who nor her. but i think that this is another introduction to a generation that probably, you know, has no idea of who she is. she's basically, i would say, in modern times the 1st black superstar that truly the 1st global black superstar, and i think that her recognition, this is the highest honor, you know, i mean, a couple years ago the story that i bid we, the folks were fighting to preserve her cabaret, which was turned into a bar, and now she has the highest honor in friends. so i think that people will feel very pleased that you know, she's recognized. but even without friends recognizing her, i think that you know, black people all over the world who knew about her where you, how great she was. you know, she was,
9:37 pm
i think one of the on the female speakers at the march in washington. so, you know, it's not a surprise to me who is familiar with her work that she would be recognized as such . but i think that black people all over will be proud of her. you know, she is of course, widely appreciated in funds, but there has been some criticism of emmanuel nacken for making the choice because he's chosen an american barn figure, albeit very popular in font, says the black 1st black woman in the pantheon, rather than someone who rose up against racism in france itself. do you think that that's a fair comparison? i don't think it's a, it's a fair, fair comparison. and if you, if you know, if you go into detail about josefina baker's life, she fought discrimination that any where she went according well, from what i've researched, as i said in her 1st cabaret call. i says, josephine on,
9:38 pm
you know, as she welcomed everybody from auto book, if you know about the neighborhood in that time, it was a home for african american soldiers and fought in the war. she welcomed them. she local members from the edgenuity q community arms on both sides of that line. t josephine baker fought for, you know, i as far as i'm concerned equal rights. it's even more embodied in her late to live when she adopted. you know, as everybody knows the rainbow tribe, so i'm, of course, people will always averages him. of course, josephine baker was a human like anybody else. but, you know, based on my research and based on the life that, you know, she lay that thing that her work showed that she, you know, anywhere she went, she tried to advise against racism. i mean, even in latin america, she was spied upon by the u. s government for the white as she did. and you know, it was her french citizenship that allowed her to move so freely because they did
9:39 pm
try to stop her movement by, you know, on cancelling her pass for it. so i think her life and her work, you know, speaks for itself. we really appreciate you giving us your time and your thoughts on this mar, back for. thank you very much indeed. thank you. the caribbean island nation of barbados is now a republic after ending its ties with the british monarchy. sandra mason has been sworn in as president, replacing queen elizabeth as head of state our latin america editor, elissia newman. was that the festivities bridgetown? ah, the declaration of the world newest republic was marked by celebrations ah, with the music song and dance that barbados is so well known for ah, but above all, it was time for solemnity. prince charles arrived for the last time as the representative of the queen by betus, his head of state mocking the end of the british monarchies, ties with the island to once known as britons, caribbean, crown jewel,

the creation of this republic of the new beginning. but it also marks a point on a continuum, a milestone on the long road. you have not only travelled, but which you have bills. then the british military flag was lowered, replaced by one that represents only barbados, which now has a new president, sandra mason. we now turn our vessels bow towards the new republic. we do this so that we may seize the full substance of our sovereignty. barbados was britton's 1st and most important slave colony, whose sugar feels produced vast wealth for the empire. it gained independence only 55 years ago, but retained the monarchy. the 3 barbados became one of the queens, 16 realms. but the many the time had come to cut the umbilical cord with the

monarchy. to wayne a bayesian as by bay dns called themselves cells, tiny salty fruit that grows by the seaside, a specialty here. he agrees with the change. i feel as be a positive, but one of us is able to run the quote for, you know, it was meant from decisions. but others like 19 year old could shawna says that the decision to break with the monarchy was imposed on them by the prime minister. without consultation, they wasn't, you know, as this one is, you see if the probably now with the new president will have a largely ceremonial role behind the prime minister and barbados will remain a part of the british commonwealth, which queen elizabeth heads. this former quaker plantation has been the residence of the governor general, the queen's representative in barbados for the last 55 years. now. it will be the residence of this country's new president, making barbados the was youngest republic, at least for now. as

a farewell present of sorts, the prime minister awarded prince charles the countries middle of freedom and then announced another surprise, the nation's hero award to the country's most famous citizen singer rianna, who is also an ambassador for barbados. impractical terms, not that much will change, but for a great many here, no longer having to pay tribute to a monarchy that brought their ancestors here from africa in chains is a change that was long overdue. ah, lucille newman, al jazeera, bridgetown, barbados, some countries still recognized the british monarch cronyn. elizabeth is still head of state of 15 countries around the world in good canada, jamaica, the bahamas, popper, new guinea and australia. she's also ahead of the commonwealth. it's a grouping of $54.00 former colonies, including india, nigeria, and trinidad, and tobago. but there have been talks in jamaica and estella about removing queen

there are due to meet with the europeans about iran's nuclear program. and of course, the europeans have said that if iran doesn't show their serious, there could be a problem here before the week's end. the thorny issue is, of course, iran use of advanced centrifuges to enrich uranium and the international atomic energy agency who is supposed to monitor iran's nuclear activity, says they're no longer able to fully see what are on is doing since they started to reduce their cooperation with the agency in the coming days it will become much more clear whether or not there will be another round of talks in the near future, according me and mark has delayed the verdict and the drawing of us to leader also . so she until next week. so she is facing charges of incitement on violet and corona virus restrictions. barnsley has more on the trial. a source has confirmed that the court in nap door has deferred the verdict till next monday. but there wasn't a reason given as to why the verdict has been deferred. non political analysts and

observers, i've spoken to say they wouldn't have been surprised if uncensored she had been found guilty. many say the military still fear how popular on san sushi is. she had in the last, who general elections led her party, the national league for democracy to huge victories. and they wouldn't have been surprised if she had been found guilty. and also given a prison sentence, or the very likely she would have been allowed to serve that under house arrest as previous military governments had done. now, few people believe on santucci has been given a fair trial. she and her co defendants have had very limited access to their defense lawyers. there are no reports of ad, the proceedings or the hearings because no journalist, no members of the public, are loud at the hearings. and many people have described these trials against she and her co defendants as show trials as a way for the june her to the gym demise the qu, but the military government has denied this,

9:48 pm
a spectacular opening ceremony out bates, the crowd best or high station, catchall defeat ball rain in that opening match. and in the opening game of the tournament, a big win. if it's easier, i'm rank more time you buy one in group b. i've mentioned our bank stadium is the latest wild companies. it's tools. i'll report to andy richardson was at the ceremony and he's got more on this unique arena. it's unlike really anything i've ever seen and well, football is designed to reflect the nomadic culture of cattle in the region. so it appears to be as a depend, like structure on the outside. but inside, you've got to sink, promote, and 60000 seat to say to you. oh, by translates from arabic into english is home, and this will be where castle opened. it goes to the world next year. that will, company will be whether the very 1st game is played on november the 21st of 2022. now, when the bid for this will copy in 2010,
9:49 pm
they promised the most compact will come in history in terms of where the stadiums would be delivered on the 8 stadiums that the costs are all within a metro ride or a short drive of each other and it throws up the idea of fans being able to go to more than one match per day. that also carries up the complexity of tens of thousands of fans, criss crossing. a relatively small area in a short period of time and, and all the problems are, may or may not cause. so we'll know this, our cup will not have the same number of fans that we'll see in the will come during the best shadow that will cut tournament. so full matches today, just before matches on many days during the world cup to test out stadium logistics . to really stress test the match our system and the organization of the roads and everything around the stadium. just to make sure that everything that was promised in 2010 can be delivered next year. also hoping to deliver it next year as well. cup is the cats are national team. and as i mentioned, they've made a winning start to the fif carpet defeating bahrain. one, they'll take

a look at the go the favor for appeal. be good to take one of their many chances. oh, excitement from fans, all i ever cut off of this one. then let's get to one of the country's iconic locations. see what keith, to join and lexia brian, an act c, a walks the atmosphere like by you. i can imagine it was a pretty excitable off to cutoffs school that go yeah, definitely will look the crowds of left after the game ended, but i have to say it was, it was really electric. here we cut to the school that got there was a massive cheer from the crowd. they were flags being waived and, and the same as well when the game wrapped up in the and when was confirmed for cut
9:51 pm
to the people we spoke to here, very excited, not just by that game, but also the opening ceremony. as you said, the match was preceded by the spectacular ceremony that really showed off some of the regions, best musicians. there was a hologram performance by as, but by google, the regions most famous singer photos, from lebanon, and one person from laven. and he has told me that they were in t is hearing hearing that performance. and it was really a message of, of unity through the ceremony. there was a medley of, of old, in the national anthems at the $1610.00 teams taking part in this arab cup. and really this arab capa and next to his world cup, which is the 1st and the middle east, is really about putting this region on show it's about, it's, as it's culture it's, it's history. and you know, that is really being seen in the way that the events are being held around the city right now. there's an international food festival is also a festival of traditional sailing shows, hoping that this these competitions to see us and next year we'll spock more
9:52 pm
excitement and possibly a future football sta. thank you for that lexia brian that see lucky that watching the game with the fans and show that was a great atmosphere. she mentioned now the car talk. i'm grabbing all the headlines, but that was not the 1st match of the tournament. it was soon as it up against martinez. you kicked things off the ultimate in alley stadium, and it was seen as yet who won that 15170 to 0 with the 1st go to the tournament. that it was it mohammed been ave you school that pay the bunch june? is you very tough? a fruit be with that and fasick victory and to the opening match if group hey, i'm on an iraq true one who empties it. took the lead in the 2nd half thanks to a penalty. and late in stoppage time, iraq cool. say given an off, but she does heat from the school. they wanna keep us safe. the shots, but he moved off his line too early, so it had to be retaken. iraq changed penalty. take is. and this time they found the back of the neck. good to say that, but it seems that returns action on friday. and the excitement isn't and that is
9:53 pm
still one that came to come on. another venue being unveiled that's gay. live now to joanna roscoe. stadium 97 full. jo. this is a another unique stadium, isn't it? absolutely. it is gemma. yeah. stadium 9 said boys. just the latest venue to be opened for the world cup next year. and you might be thinking why 97 full well is that she the international dialing code for kathy, but it's also the same number of shipping containers used to be placed into the stadium. now it's the, as a very strange kind of concept, but it's actually the 1st d mountable stadium ever for a fee for world cup. and i was lucky enough to go behind the scenes to see how it had been put together before pickle. the 1st thing fans will notice when they arrive at stadium 9, sit in full is that it looks a bit like it was constructed using children's building blocks. and that's not entirely too far from the truth just on
9:54 pm
a much bigger scale. this stadium has been put together with 974 shipping containers, 40000 seats, and a metal structure. the shipping containers in the stadium and not just said to provide decoration and color. many of them have functions when now down on the ground floor of the stadium right next and players tunnel. and as you can see, this one is the referees dressing room. so let's take a look inside, come on and, and we'll have a look at how it's been fitted out. as you can see, there was a sink over there. couple of toilets. and there are also some lockers just behind me where they can put away their kites. they cool is a modulus stadium. it has this advantages. it keeps costs slow in low as the number of building materials they need to use. and it can be put up relatively quickly since these container or fabricates it's fully off is adult in china a most of the elements we have public it than vietnam and dedicate once we had them on. so it's a talk us from november to martin when we started replacing the content on swan,
9:55 pm
i'm position on march 21, which is a 6 month off of a tournament. the roof, the think the shipping containers and all the metal frames will be taken apart and sent overseas to all the projects. it's all part of the idea of sustainability and legacy for the middle east. first world cup. does there one we thought of legacy, which is one of the most effective on commitments that we had during the bid in the back. and phil's in tune and even with the concept of having a temporary stadium, i think this would enhance, even with using shipping containers is also a nod to the stadiums. location. it's right next to though, how by next to the old. so how poor, and it also has the best view. this is gone. well,
9:56 pm
the united, our emberts and syria will open this stadium in a few minutes from now. they're just playing the national anthems inside the stadium behind us. but when mo, x, united arab emirates, well they'll be confident going into this game because they be 11 on one know in a walk, qualify not too long ago and not boosted that chances of returning he for the well cup finals next year. but it could also be seen as a bit of a re much because the u. a and syria played in september and a welcome qualify. and actually they, they drew 11. so we're expecting quite a tight game in this one. thank you for that, john. i got that stadium 97 full and briefly away from the our cup tiger woods has admitted he'll never get back to top level golf full time off to his car crash in february, he's been speaking in public for the 1st time since that accident which left him with serious injuries to his right leg and foot would come back from multiple back

surgeries in the past is considered by many of the greatest gulf of all time. but he believes his best days on till are behind him. i don't foresee the slay, ever being with what it used to be. hence i'll never have the back what it used to be and clock sticking. i'm getting older, i'm not getting the younger. so all that combined means that a full schedule and full practice schedule and the recovery that it would take to do that. oh no, i don't have any desire to do that. i don't so we half an hour reminder of our top sports stories before we go post a cat's eyes and up. that's one minute with a one. no. when i that the rain it was tennis. yeah. who on the 1st match of the tournament as thrashing martini at 5 goals to one, and the rack celebrated after salvaging a late jewel against a man in the opening match. great a. we'll be back in a few hours time for another sports update at $21.00. at 45. 20 i think enjoy
