report, he was under attack from many directions, but particularly by, from obviously the leader of the labor opposition party kissed armor who performed not surprisingly well with all the meat that he had to roast. and he was pushing hard. i'm making the point that johnson should not be allowed to get away with this . he said that his statement in which he announced the inquiry, was not sufficient. it was putting up more questions than it was answers. and in the, the news conference afterwards, it was put to him several times how, how can you really be a moral authority guiding the public what, what to do when you have active in this way? or in terms of dodging all the issues and denying this party ever took place. however, he sidestepped that throughout. so we may see a different prime minister spelling out new restrictions on cove it. but he hasn't

been able to dodge this. the still a long way to go in may only have been a christmas party as, but it was abusive offensive towards the british public at a time of need at a time of great sadness. when many people were dying and still, our latino partying is catching out quite a lot of politicians, finland's prime minister, has had to apologize for going clubbing. after one of her close contacts tested positive for coven 19 santa marion went on a night out in helsinki on saturday hours after her foreign minister confirmed a positive test is 36 year old prime ministers as a text message advising her to isolate was sent to her work phone, which she had left at home, pfizer, it says preliminary tests show 3 shots of its cove in 1900 vaccine are likely to provide protection against the only con variance. the pharmaceutical giants. as 2 doses still offer protection against severe illness, but

even though we've had like a little cases similar to this in the past. but they, they weren't trying to officially for the security agencies. if he appears prime minister ibm, it says he's returning to the capital. the saga after leading government troops in the fight against the gray and rebels. in a statement on social media, the nobel peace prize winner said he'd completed the 1st phase of the conflict. after joining troops, 2 weeks ago, pro government forces have claimed major advances, re taking the strategic towns of dessie and come butcher the year long conflict has killed thousands of people displaced more than $2000000.00 and driven hundreds of thousands into famine like conditions. booking of us as president rock cowboy has dismissed the prime minister and the government, the mover follows a wave of protests last month over rising in security in the country. an attack on november 14th. so hundreds of fighter is a storm, a camp in the north,

a really good val with a lot of that in my putin says russia plans to send proposals to washington within a week. the follow up on his talks with biden, both leaders agree to appoint envoys to continue talks on regional security and the conflict in ukraine. bernard smith, this following developments from the russian capital moscow that him had put in described long and detailed talks. he said were constructive and subjective and he said the most important thing is that we can continue us dialogue. so it generally positive tone coming from the russian president who's been pushing his office in the coming, pushing for these talks of many weeks now. but he did still. busy say that he believes nato is pursuing a clearly confrontational policy towards russia. he said, and book asked about if russia was planning to invade ukraine, he called such a,

just such a suggestion, provocative receipt. but it will literally be your new political. russia pursues peaceful foreign policy. but it has the right to insure it security in the mid to long term, as they have said already. and we are discussing this with all her partners, including my dial up partner yesterday, president biden. we can only be concerned about the perspective of ukraine's possible admission to nato, because this will undoubtedly be followed by the deployment there of appropriate military contention basis and weapons that threaten us. there is the normandy grouping. this is made up of france, germany, russia, and ukraine, and it was set up to try and bring an end to the fighting. it has fail so far to do that, but russia is now saying there's no reason why the us shouldn't join this group. and that seems to come off the back of a suggestion by the u. s. secretary state antony blinking last week. but washington try is offering it services to try and facilitate, taught, facilitate talks,

to end the fighting. we should also say that ukraine's foreign minister at the end of these talks between brought biden and putin. he described them a serving the per purpose of the terrans. and de escalation the trial of a former u. s. police officer who shot and killed a black man in april is underway in minneapolis. kimberly porter is facing to manslaughter charges for killing 20 year old. don't have right. the former officer says she mistakenly use their hand gun instead of her taser when the man attempted to flee a traffic stop to avoid arrest. the court was shown images comparing the taser to a hand gun during opening statements. rights death sparked widespread the protests . this case is about an officer who knew not to get it dead wrong, but she failed to get away with cases about the defendant,

12:25 am
that we can do together, industry and policy makers. and we have a specific proposal. we believe there should be an industry body that will determine the best practices when it comes to what i think are the 3 most important questions with regards to safety. how to verify age, how to build age appropriate experiences, and how to build parental controls was act price is the digital director for the organization, accountable tech, and he joins us now from washington. d. c, via zoom as sir. thank you so much for joining us. so he's calling for an industry body to help keep young people on line just explaining their some of the issues this body would have to look at. what do you make of that proposal? well, thanks so much for having me on today. let's be fair. facebook lobster throughout the shiny objects before a congressional hearing. it's something we've seen time and time again from this company that enjoys the art of deflection distraction in deferring responsibility
12:26 am
to others. ah, it's pretty wretched for my perspective. for a company that is known for years via their own internal researchers, that their platform poses a serious danger to young people across the world to now just hours before congressional hearing propose new ideas for how to better protect kids online. it facebook truly cared about the health and well being of young people across the world. they would have taken action. years ago. from my perspective, it's a little, it's too little, too late. not wanting to defend facebook, but i guess social media is such a movable fees that mean even instagram is a relatively new platform. so. so maybe a lot of these issues are becoming clearer now, but, but do you think that it should be up to instagram or facebook or any of these platforms to govern themselves or do you think their idea of an external industry body is a valid one? i think it's a valid idea worth consideration, but ultimately,
12:27 am
i don't think we should necessarily book to facebook for these ideas. we, we know that facebook has known for years that their platforms pose a serious danger to young people. one in 3 teenage girls. i say that instagram has caused the mental health challenges, according to facebook own internal research in facebook, chose to keep that research um private and not share that with users, parents and elected officials to day we have a serious problem on our hands. i think we have to look at all the tools we have at our disposal to rein in big tax monopoly power and societal harms, dangers for young people that involved governments taking action that and also involves users and parents speaking out and demanding the transparency that they deserve from platforms like facebook, one of the measures that instagram is said, it will propose is basically a message that comes up saying you need to take a break if you've been on the platform for too long. and maybe seeing
12:28 am
a lot of looking for a lot of the same content. i mean, do you think that that is a valid move? do you believe that their intentions are right? and also the verification of age, which of course is crucial when we talk about young people. these are really important questions and ah, from my perspective, a lot of the announcements instagram has made leading up to this hearing today. our cosmetic fixes to unfortunately, a system that's far more broken. and at the end of the day, we have to step back and ask ourselves, well how does instagram make money? and i think it's important to look at their toxic business model that at the end of the day, is about hooking users for as long as possible to run as many ads as possible on their feed generate as much revenue as possible. facebook makes 98 percent of its revenue from this toxic business model of surveillance advertising. so when they propose a simple fix, like taking a break, i think they do that because they know they have the ability to hook users and lower them back to the platform. ultimately,
12:29 am
i think it's incumbent upon governments to look at how it is we can better structure the incentives behind companies like facebook on that rely upon this toxic business model surveillance advertising. certainly an issue that is a becoming, you know, it's getting the focus on it more and more was act price digital director of the organization accountable at tech sir, thank you for sharing of use with us. thanks so much for having me. that's more still to come in this news hour, including a sri lankan man who was beaten and burned by his colleagues and pakistan is laid to rest in his home country. we talked to the family, australia, canada, canada, and the u. k. join the u. s. diplomatic boy culture of china's winter olympics. another joke of it appears on the entry list for the australian open despite questions over his covalent vaccination status. that's coming up in sport. ah.
