sudan has seen more protests in recent weeks following the military's power grab in october. i'm jealous hippa morgan was early on the streets of khartoum and has this report where on the road that leads to the presidential palace where thousands of protesters have gathered for hours to commemorate the 3rd anniversary of the dance revolution which led to the overthrow of long time president omar bashir, but protesters are out for another reason as well to day. they want to show the military that they are against the takeover, which took place in late october, leading to the arrest of siena, government officials, and the dissolution of the transitional government that was in power for just over 2 years, protested on sunday were able to reach the southern gate of the presidential palace, something that has never happened before and pro democracy movement. they say that that for them is an achievement. they have been demanding that the military be remove from to dance politics. and the anger over the takeover only increased on

november 21st. when prime minister ham duke, who was under house arrest following the military tick over, signed an agreement with the military, the prime minister ham dachelle, has been reinstated, has described the current situation as a backslider regression to the transition and to finance transition to democracy. but there is a possibility for the country to come out of at current prices through dialect on consensus. but many protesters here say that they want to see the military be removed from powers and from politics. and they said that is the only way forward to remove saddam out of its current crisis. they say they will be organizing more protests in the coming days despite the amount of fear that has been fired on sunday. and in previous protest, despite the fact that more than 45 protests have been killed and over 200 haven't injured people here in the streets, they will continue to protest. they will continue to voice their demand for a democracy and for civilian rule demands that they started 3 years ago. and they

say they will not stop demanding for until they see it achieved me. how the surge in cupboard 19 cases linked to the alma kron variant has led european government to take urgent action ahead of the winter holidays. the netherlands went to a strict lockdown earlier on sunday, and there was pressure on the british government to do the same. but anger against new restrictions is also building up. as i said, beg reports are. 7 against mandatory vaccinations and vaccine passports, thousands gathered in belgium to express their anger restrictions. it comes with a government issued strong advice to get vaccinated and gave health workers 3 months to get back to make it or risk losing their jobs. britain has seen some of its height levels in new cases of the virus. when the football stadium was turned into a mass boost of vaccination center, as the government tries to curb the outbreak. but for now it's reluctance,

dream pose a pre christmas lockdown is at odds with the mayor of london. if we don't bring in you restrictions sooner rather than later, you're going to see even more positive cases and potentially public service a lot. the us on the verge of collapse, if not collapse in germany, has added the u. k. 2, it's higher as countries meaning tied to travel restrictions. france has already been travel from britain other than compelling reasons which do not include tourism and business. it comes as europe races itself for the spread of the army. kron variant and many countries are now considering the return of restrictions over the christmas period. the streets in the netherlands should have been packed with christmas shoppers. but all non essential businesses have been ordered to close after a strict lockdown was imposed. even on the northern tip of europe, finland with a christmas period brings with it tourists. this now real concern. i've never had times like this before. like i know my colleagues. they are wondering the same,
9:06 pm
and this is like a puzzle every day. your stars back again on you look at the latest updates on use and you start wondering what's happening with the travelers. what's happening with the georgia workers. the company is how do we survive as christmas, fast approaches the shadow cast by the covey virus seems to be getting ever longer . i said, beg, jazeera, or in the u. s. president joe biden is considering further measures as cases rise there that says americans prepare for the busiest travel season of the year. states including connecticut and michigan saying surges in hospital emissions. the centers for disease control also says alma crohn is on the verge of becoming the dominant variant in new york city. let's go live now to christian salumi, who is in new york for us. so christian, just, how bad is it there right now?

well, people are really worried and reconsidering their holiday plans after 2 days of new infections topping records over the last year. now 200-2000 people read that were found tested positive on saturday. that's the higher than during the peak of winter last year. hospitalizations nationwide are up 50 percent, not anywhere near the peak last year, but dr. anthony found she, the infectious disease specialist is warning that hospitals could start feeling the strain because even if this omicron variant is less deadly than delta, it is so contagious and moving so rapidly through the population that could put a strain on hospitals. and we're already seeing that happening, particularly in areas of the country and of the state of new york, where a vaccination rates are lower. so people here are reconsidering their plans and
9:08 pm
wondering if it's safe to travel. thought she has advised that travel does increase your risk of catching the disease, but he says you should be safe if you're vaccinated and you take precautions and officials right now are focusing on getting people vaccinated, encouraging people to get vaccinated and boosted. no major lockdown have been announced yet. officials are trying to avoid that given the toll it's taken on businesses and on schools and students in particular. but people are worried and people are watching a lot of private companies in a holiday parties. and things we're seeing are, are getting cancelled already. absolutely. they'll be keeping a close eye on the new year's. so the possibility of was those famous new year's celebrations that happened in new york every, every new years a well that might now be endangered. right,
9:09 pm
well that's one thing people are worrying about. is it safe to have all these people in a big crowd gathered in new york times square to watch the ball drop normal times and be thousands of people close together for hours and hours. course it is outside, and right now it's scheduled to go on. people have to have a vaccination in order to attend. but the mayor has said they're keeping an eye on things and they're in nothing is certain. at this point. we've had broadway shows shut down in the last couple of days. the rockettes, the famous christmas show, had to close. and that's because of breakthrough infections in the production staffs. they are, they can't reopen and these are people who've been vaccinated, but they have infection. so with that is the backdrop. nothing is certain going forward. all right, chris, the salumi life. we're seeing you now. but when connie is a senior clinical lecture at the university of exits his medical school, he explains the current concerns about the new variance. because it is,

are highly infectious. and we have seen the rising tide of cases. we know that it won't be 0 disease causing. so let's take an example. the delta vary caused one percent of the people to be seriously ill. on the other hand, we've got ami chrome, which will create many more millions of cases. and it is not 15 percent seriously ill, but not point 5 percent of a very large number. a much larger number is still a very big number. and those are the concerns. the other concerns are this vaccine bypassing. and then finally there is a not so peer reviewed report out just yet from imperial university, which say's that it may be just as much disease causing as the delta variant. what is required is a continuous effort. you the locked down gives you a little bit of breathing space. i accept that. but after the locked down,
9:11 pm
it shouldn't be. you drop all your god. and this is where i think we've gone wrong in the united kingdom, which is they call it the freedom day and all sorts of other euphemisms. that's the wrong messaging because if you continue after the lock down with good infection control measures, you won't need another one. and that's the way we should be doing it. are torrential, rain and flash floods in malaysia have forced 11000 people from their homes. emergency workers are rescuing the strand to take them to shelters. floods are common immolated during the annual monsoon season between october and march. police in the philippines say at least a 169 people are confirmed dead in the aftermath of super typhoon right. thousands of soldiers have joined rescue workers to search for survivors in remote areas are corresponding to me like in dog and has more from sagacity. the philippine millet, she invited a story reconnaissance flight over the eastern part of the mid to now region to see

back on course. ah, well that's still had the 1st us president jo biden's efforts to pass one of his signature pieces of legislation is on life support. and a senator from his own party may have struck the fatal blow. the nearly 2 trillion dollar build fact better bill is aimed at improving education, lowering health care costs and tackling climate change. but democratic senator joe mentioned says he won't back it by needs every democrat in the 5050 sent it to get the bill through. i cannot vote to continue with this piece of legislation. i just can't. i've tried everything humanly possible. i can't get there. you're done. this is a no. this is a no. on this legislation,
9:16 pm
i have tried everything i know to do. the white house has responded to mentions, remarks press secretary jen sack, he said his comments this morning on fox are at odds with his discussions this week with the president with white house staff and with his own public utterances. she went on to say that his comments represent the quote, sudden and inexplicable reversal in his position and a breach of his commitments to the president and the senators, colleagues in the house and senate. why eric ham is a political analyst and also a join us via skype. now from washington, d. c, thanks very much for being with us. so 1st off, we had set a dimension, pretty unequivocal there in his decision not to vote for this bill. does that effectively kill it? well, yes, it does, president biting off 50 senators plus his vice president commonwealth to get legislation over the finish line. but a little bit should not be a surprise to the president as well as a democrat,
9:17 pm
joe matching has been saying from day one that this legislation that he did not support that he did not get behind. and he was never actually in favor of this legislation. in fact, the only reason why his, his response to what had been best habits is because he was trying to get the infrastructure legislation over the finish line. now that the $1.00 trillion dollar spending package that joe matching himself had been a part of actually crafting and putting together. once they got that through the, the, the senator said that he would move on bill back better, which clearly he did not. and this is unprecedented. never any history. have you seen a senator of a president all parties, not only tank signature legislation, but a signature piece of the president is very agenda. and given how tight the margins are in congress right now, and many looking at a complete to nami, next year with democrats moving up,
9:18 pm
potentially bold out in the senate. the fact that joe matching did not deliver for the president. if c as a major blow to his agenda, but also and more importantly to the parties, potential future and control in washington. and presumably, republicans are looking at this now because not a single republican, as we said, has voted for this bill. not entirely, not particularly surprising, given how partisan things are in washington. they're looking at this and thinking we don't really have to do anything to democrats. are doing it all for us. well, not necessarily, but the sense that now joe may actually has a major component of president biden's agenda. it's going to be very hard for democrats to run next year on that agenda. more importantly, it's going to be even more difficult for the president to go out and talk to the american people about what he promised to deliver. and therefore a major component of that will will not be at hand. and so this is something that
9:19 pm
is politically, this is, this is devastating for the party and for the president, but also a speech to just how much power one particular senator can wield in the united states, particularly given how tight the margins are right now. and also it also has a very glaring light on, on the whole, the reservation in washington given the fact that you have this legislation that is overwhelmingly supported by all americans. and yet you have no republicans, even one willing to support this legislation. i wanted ask you about that because as you say it is, it is a very popular that does have a lot of popular support. is it? is it surprising to you that there isn't a single republican in a, perhaps a swing state or, or a state vista was democrats that, that there isn't one among them that might go the other way? yes, that's so true. i'm glad you brought that out because you take
9:20 pm
a state like pennsylvania state that went for joe biden or state like wisconsin or even michigan or not michigan, because you don't have any republicans out there. but a state like pennsylvania, wisconsin, or even the state of west virginia, which is a very poor state. and this legislation will do much to live, not only children, but also many americans in that state out of poverty. we're talking about a state with a median household income of less than $26000.00, and you have a u. s. sen there who's making $180000.00, but yet he will not pass this legislation that will provide a income child tax credit for those people in that state. and what that does is that list tens of thousands of children out of poverty, and he will not get behind that legislation. so it's not just jo magic, but it's also his republican colleagues showing more capital from the state of west virginia who will not support this legislation. and the reason why because they are
9:21 pm
afraid of what former president and donald trump might say. if in fact they do get behind and as we understand this bill may help out. a lot of people in mentions, home state of west virginia. so if that's the case, why was he supported? well, i think one of the reasons that joe mentioned will not get behind this legislation is because he does have a lot of car box for climate change. and we're talking about a senator who also has an enormous amount of business and financial stay in the coal industry. and so this legislation would actually reduce the amount of coal being used. and it also provides a carbon net neutral framework going forward is so bad as something that could be damaging financially to the senator. and so what we're seeing here is him placing his business and financial interest over the interest of his citizens. good to talk
